Jeff, Allen, Casey and Raj embark on a heart and head heavy journey towards pluralism as guided by Diana Eck’s markers of pluralism: "First, pluralism is not diversity alone, but the energetic engagement with diversity. Diversity can and has meant the creation of religious ghettoes with little traffic between or among them. Today, religious diversity is a given, but pluralism is not a given; it is an achievement. Mere diversity without real encounter and relationship will yield increasing tensions in our societies. Second, pluralism is not just tolerance, but the active seeking of understanding across lines of difference.Tolerance is a necessary public virtue, but it does not require Christians and Muslims, Hindus, Jews, and ardent secularists to know anything about one another. Tolerance is too thin a foundation for a world of religious difference and proximity. It does nothing to remove our ignorance of one another, and leaves in place the stereotypes, the half-truths, the fears that underlie old patterns of division and violence. In the world in which we live today, our ignorance of one another will be increasingly costly. Third, pluralism is not relativism, but the encounter of commitments. The new paradigm of pluralism does not require us to leave our identities and our commitments behind, for pluralism is the encounter of commitments. It means holding our deepest differences, even our religious differences, not in isolation, but in relationship to one another. Fourth, pluralism is based on dialogue. The language of pluralism is that of dialogue and encounter, give and take, criticism and self-criticism. Dialogue means both speaking and listening, and that process reveals both common understandings and real differences. Dialogue does not mean everyone at the “table” will agree with one another. Pluralism involves the commitment to being at the table — with one’s commitments." —Diana L. Eck, 2006, http://pluralism.org/ The co hosts discuss past teachings on the “evils of pluralism,” acknowledge the difficulties of being in relationship with people who are different,  reveal past hurts and present fears around being in relationship across boundaries, and express hope for a more pluralistic world. While some may play the Alphabet Game on a road trip, Casey and Bonnie get into a deep conversation on two tried and true Christian approaches - Apologist or Evangelist. Jeff and Raj are brought into Casey’s and Bonnie’s road trip question:  Are you an apologist or an evangelist? In other words, are you more interested in defending Christianity (or as Casey says, put lipstick on a pig) or in spreading the good news of unconditional love?  Jeff wonders if the question poses a false dichotomy, maybe it’s possible to be both an apologist and an evangelist depending on the issue at hand. For those of us who still find life in the way of Jesus after deconstructing our evangelical fundamentalist faith, Jeff, Casey, Raj and Bonnie invite us into deeper deconstruction -- like, deconstructing the motivation behind our decision to remain Christian, albeit progressive Christian.  Using the story of an unconventional baptism in Casey’s hot tub, the mikvah scene from Netflix’s Orange is the New Black and a cry to abolish church organs, the Irenicast crew wonders about Christianity’s ability to overcome historical limitations and truly make all things new. After all that talk about evangelism -- literally, the good message.  In our segment, Jeff, Raj, Casey and Bonnie reveal the Top 3 pre-deconstruction Christian songs that they still jam to when no one is looking.  ‘Cause it’s embarrassing and the message isn’t always good.   Conversation on Apologist or Evangelist (01:01) Top 3 Pre-Deconstruction Christian Songs Segment (48:50)   RELEVANT LINKS  From Our Conversation on Apologist or Evangelist Nadia Bolz-Weber (American Public Theologian) Richard Rohr (American author, spiritual writer and Franciscan friar) Irenicast Roundtable – The Art of Oversharing – 135 (Irenicast Episode) Brené Brown (American research professor) Mikveh Orange is the New Black (HBO TV Series) Siege of Jerusalem (70 CE) Rudolph Bultmann (German Theologian and Professor of New Testament) Rev. Despite what many of us from fundamentalist backgrounds have been told, there is a diverse array of Christian theologies.  Liberation, Queer, Womanist and Process theology are some of the lenses we will be looking through on this week’s episode. This week Raj, Bonnie and Casey share their learnings and leanings on the the theologies of Liberation, Queer, Womanist and Process in ways that are moving, inspiring, troubling and down right blasphemous. The co-hosts explore the power and possibility of each theology and connect dots and highlight intersectionality all over the place. Liberation theology posits that God is “on the side of the oppressed.” The co-hosts unpack the economic and social ramifications of an embrace of liberation theology. The team also wonders if “total liberation” is possible and what might be left to do if/when liberation is achieved. Queer theology invites us to look at the Bible and God with a lense that has few, if any, limitations of traditional gender roles, sexual standards, anything - an opportunity to see things anew. Womanist theology says “have a seat at the table” and talk about the deep, dark things and the high and bright things and you will be heard. The best theology is often created at the kitchen table by those who have never been to seminary. Process theology stems from the work of Alfred North Whitehead’s work “Process and Reality.” The nature of God is in radical relationship WITH all of creation not creation a subject of God. In the segment Raj, Bonnie and Casey reveal their “least liked” Christian phrases. Triggers all around! Beware some will cause feelings of nausea, irritability and down-right anger.   Conversation on Christian Theologies (00:35) Bottom 3 Segment (49:15) RELEVANT LINKS From Our Conversation on Christian Theologies Liberation Theology (Wiki) Gustavo Gutiérrez (Liberation Theologian - Amazon Affiliate Link) Saul Alinsky (American community organizer and writer) Year of Jubilee Annie Lamott (Progressive political activist, public speaker, and writing teacher - Amazon Affiliate Link) James Cone (American theologian - Amazon Affiliate Link) Conversation on Race – A Kick in the Walls – 134 (Irenicast Episode) Queer Theology (Wiki) The Queerness of Cana (Queerly Faithful blog post by Casey) Womanist Theology (Wiki) Alice Walker (American novelist, short story writer, poet, and activist - Amazon Affiliate Link) Katie G Cannon (American Christian theologian and ethicist associated with womanist theology and black theology) The Oxford Handbook of African American Theology by Katie G. Ordinary People. Ordinary Things. with Melissa Radke

How can we dedicate this season to the body and not talk about working out? You know me. You know I don't want to talk about this, but today is the day. The one and only Casey Adams is here today. Casey is the perfect guest for this show, because he takes ordinary people and moves them out of their comfort zone and into great held. Casey is a gym owner, personal trainer, and future Ninja. He is a father of three and husband to a beautiful wife, and they share a strong love for Jesus. He is an adventure seeking, fun loving, and funny guy. He is also fond of his large, crazy sock collection. You can find Casey here: Casey Adams on Instagram Fitt Life on Facebook Fitt Life Gym3116 S. John Redditt Dr.Lufkin TX 75904 Show Notes [03:17] David Radke is also here with Casey. [04:20] Melissa and her cousin were both in one of Casey's spin classes. [06:16] David met Casey when he used to work out regularly. [07:26] Casey's gym is split into three sections.Upfront they have cardio and weights with a kids section on the side. In the middle, they have an American Ninja Warrior ninja gym. In the back, there is a Kids Zone and dedicated party room with an obstacle course in back. [12:13] Done properly, you can make an elliptical a great workout. Casey can't promise it will be fun, but if you're successful at this you will be successful at other things. [14:35] David has always been a fan of working out by himself. He's never been to a class. [15:04] Some people work better one-on-one and some people like the motivation of a group.[19:11] You can get Casey's Hitt Treadmill Workout book by contacting him on Facebook.[19:38] He wrote this book, because his clients were always asking him for workouts. [20:11] There is also a hitt book in the works. [23:03] Some of the exercises in the book just require a person, a treadmill, and the ground. [25:39] Start walking a couple miles every day and work on your diet and work on yourself. [26:30] Gauge your soreness and listen to your body. You want to feel it, but you don't want to eat. [27:40] David talks about how it's important to actually get something accomplished not to set giant goals that you'll never get done. [28:21] Goals need to be realistic and attainable. [28:56] It's more important than ever to have a plan. [29:46] We are all a work in progress and that's where the Mind, Body, and Soul come in. [30:23] The workouts in the hitt book can be done every day, because they change body parts. [31:22] Daisy Fuentes was the most beautiful woman to Melissa when she was in high school. [32:14] Melissa wants to feel better. The best way to start is to ease yourself in and come up with a game plan. [33:07] Starting consists of taking that first step. [35:13] Working out is a choice that you aren't just doing for yourself. It's also for your family. [36:30] When Casey was younger, he had some bad lifestyle choices. Then one of his friend's father passed away, and he decided to get fit and started running. [38:04] Eat better and do some form of exercise, and you will feel better. [39:09] Doing small incremental things each day is the key. [40:42] Melissa is going to be brave and work out this year. [43:08] God has changed Casey's life, and now Casey is changing other people's lives. [43:39] When he started, he knew that God would provide. [46:28] The three last questions. Irenicast Roundtable y’all! There are certain legends that speak of a round table where valiant heroes, thought leaders and purveyors of magic gathered to rid the world of injustice.  Well f**k those guys. This is the round table worthy to be called a showcase of the immortals. Where else can you encounter a high caliber cast of characters that could be taken straight out of a Tolkien novel? There is Jeff, the court jester who is skilled in avoiding the fiery darts of vulnerability with humor.  Allen, a powerful empath and over-sharer dubbed by many as the occasional vegan. The esteemed man of the cloth who’s compassion and love for people, and slow jams, has garnered him the simple, yet powerful, tile of Pastor Casey.  There is also the ever evolving and highly skilled social justice warrior, Bonnie. And finally, the sage who’s wisdom regarding choice of mate and love of bacon brings stability to his clan, Raj. Listen this week as this cast of legends engages in the age old youth group practice of laughing and being vulnerable while creating a divine atmosphere where all are welcome.  Where origin stories are shared and secrets revealed. A journey that takes you effortlessly from laughter to tears. Our conversation on race takes an honest look at the team’s understanding of race as a complex construct that has shaped every aspect of our identities, our relationships and our lives. Raj suggests the topic in honor of Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s legacy. Dr. King called us into uncomfortable spaces to do challenging work in the areas of economic justice, anti militarism, prison reform and racial equity. Additionally Raj shares the observation that “white people” rarely have the opportunity to talk openly about race. The pursuit of racial justice requires engaged participants from all sectors of the racial spectrum to be involved, courageous and vulnerable. The team agrees to step into the uncomfortable space together. Co-hosts Jeff, Allen, Bonnie and Casey respond to Raj’s questions on the definition of race, on racial identity, racial understanding, the linkage between faith formation and racial formation and what role each one has to play in the struggle for racial justice. Then the team gets silly in a new segment “Over/Under.” Avocado Toast, Jerry Seinfeld, Titanic, Grunge. Listen and you’ll understand. Linda Kay Klein author of PURE: Inside the Evangelical Movement That Shamed a Generation of Young Women and How I Broke Free joins us this week.  Sexuality, sexual purity as Christian faithfulness, girls, boys, women, men, shame, guilt, American Evangelicalism, political opportunism, the Virgin Mary, healing, hope and community – these are just a few of the topics Linda discusses with Irenicast co-host, Bonnie Rambob. The conversation begins with Linda’s relay of her own personal experiences with purity culture during her adolescence.  As Linda grew, left the church and entered the secular world, she likens her struggle in the wake of purity indoctrination to include almost PTSD-like symptoms.  Though impacted women (and men) often find it hard to talk about their shame regarding sexuality, Linda heard “me too” whispers along the way coming from others with whom Linda shares a similar background.  Hence, her life-changing (according to Bonnie) well-researched book. Linda unpacks a little bit about the history of sexual repression within American Christianity and its devastating generational impact.  In the 90s, purity culture became purity industry. She and Bonnie briefly consider the influential book, I Kissed Dating Goodbye written by a young Joshua Harris.  Linda and Bonnie discuss the deep spiritual work of repentance, listening, talking and healing, all of which is part of breaking free from the oppression of purity culture. Linda shares her own spiritual journey as a Christian though not a church member.  In a rich detour from the central topic, Linda and Bonnie explore the value of spiritual community in relation to going it alone or belonging to religious institutions such as church. The conversation ends with an important question – what now?  How do we move forward? Linda shares her insights into the healing power of values- based, lifespan sexuality education curricula such as OWL (Our Whole Lives) developed in collaboration between Unitarian Universalists, United Church of Christ and Planned Parenting.  Bonnie and Linda reflect on biblical images of women’s sexuality, for example the Virgin Mary. Together they wonder about whether there is potential for reframing these images in liberative ways. In addition, Linda shares her emerging and ground-breaking work as founder of Break Free Together. If, as part of your faith life, you’ve ever experienced shame just because you are a sexual being, you might be a survivor of purity culture – and, this episode is for you.   RELEVANT LINKS From Our Conversation with Linda Kay Klein Author of PURE PURE: Inside the Evangelical Movement That Shamed a Generation of Young Women and How I Broke Free by Linda Kay Klein (Book - Amazon Affiliate Link) Joshua Harris (American Pastor and Author) Evangelical Writer Kisses An Old Idea Goodbye (Article on Joshua Harris’ recently apology for I Kissed Dating Goodbye) Faith, Hope, Chastity : Thousands of teen-agers are embracing a new Christian abstinence program. ‘Tis the episode before 2019 and all through the show, we are politicizing Christmas and hoping to grow.  Our new hosts are ready, and chosen with care. As we continue to cultivate a place for our souls to be laid bare.  So, gather in and listen to our chatter, as we serve up something fun and challenging on a digital platter. Let us call out together without haste, Merry Christmas to all and lay the establishment to waste. Irenicast is expanding its borders this week and welcoming Bonnie & Raj Rambob and Casey Tinnin as official co-hosts of Irenicast.  Listen and hear how this came together and where Irenicast is headed with this new chorus of voices. And that is not all for this super-sized holiday episode either.  All 5 hosts have a short but meaningful discussion about whether politicizing Christmas is a needless distraction or a true response to the gospel.  With everything happening in our world today it can seem that there are more parallels to the Christmas story then there has ever been. The episode finishes as everyone gathers around the proverbial fire and shares their favorite Christmas and holiday traditions.  It is fitting that this official roll out of a new direction for Irenicast happens as we celebrate the birth of a movement in the person of Jesus Christ. How and why are the Enneagram and Progressive Christianity having their moment? Pastor Casey Tinnin joins Jeff and Allen for a discussion about personality typing, self-knowledge, emotional intelligence, relationship styles, and more as we dive deep into “heart-centered” types and the Enneagram in general. Pastor Casey Tinnin, in addition to being an Enneagram guru, is the pastor of Loomis Basin Congregational Church in Loomis California and one of the co-creators of Intersections which is a support group that meets once a month to deconstruct their evangelical past. Casey also created a non-religious LGBT teen group, The Landing Spot, that meets once a month. Casey is passionate about being an example of progressive Christianity in the wake of conservative evangelicalism. “My role as pastor is to empower people to take on the task of following Jesus; to be the hands, feet, and voice of God in the world.” Also in this episode, Jeff and Allen get personal with Casey in regard to their own numbers and wings.  Also find out what numbers and wings mean within the Enneagram framework. Although many within the Progressive Christianity framework seem to be very familiar with the Enneagram, this conversation might help shed some light as to why that may be. Finally, for the segment, these three preachers dabble in another round of Jesus Juke.  Casey, Jeff and Allen creating sermons out of nowhere using a dry erase erasers, a lens cap, and tardigrades as illustrations.   Conversation on the Enneagram and Progressive Christianity (02:18) Jesus Juke Segment (51:57) RELEVANT LINKS From Our Conversation on the Enneagram and Progressive Christianity Intersections Roundtable – A Community of EXvangelicals and UNfundies – 113 (First Irenicast Episode with Pastor Casey Tinnin) Poverty and Protest – With Guest Co-Host Bonnie Rambob – 123 (Recent Episode with Guest Co-Host Bonnie Rambob, also from the Intersections Roundtable Episode) Myers–Briggs Type Indicator Enneagram Resources Wagner Enneagram Personality Style Scales (Casey’s Recommended Enneagram Test) Jerry Wagner - Enneagram Spectrum of Personality Styles   Attachment Theory Letter from a Birmingham Jail by Martin Luther King Jr. Kathryn Grant is Casey’s mentor when it comes to the Enneagram.   Kurt Cobain (American singer, songwriter, and musician.  Frontman for the band Nirvana) RuPaul Andre Charles (American drag queen, actor, model, singer, songwriter, television personality, and author)   From Our Jesus Juke Segment (The Jesus Juke Segment as also been done on episodes #003, #039, #075, #096, #104 and #123) Jesus or Jay-Z is a segment we’ve done on episodes #001, #013, #022, #060 and #119… We are looking to rename this segment however, see episode #119 for why Loving Haters In the Trump Era – With the Artist Formerly Known as Mona – 124 (Episode Casey was talking about with Sound Charades segment… Sound Charades has also been done on episodes #047, #064 and #124) Tardigrade (a phylum of water-dwelling, eight-legged, segmented micro-animals) THANK YOU A big thanks to Pastor Casey Tinnin.  Casey is the pastor of Loomis Basin Congregational Church in Loomis California.  He is one of the co-creators of Intersections which is a support group that meets once a month to deconstruct their evangelical past. Crowd Crush (tv series) When Casey thinks watering hole he thinks ‘gathering of people’ and crowd crush is that gathering taken to the extreme.   A crowd starts acting like a fluid when it reaches a certain density. Extracting yourself from one of these crowds is often literally swimming upstream.   The pilgrimage to Mecca for Hajj is one of the events that regularly draws massive crowds and therefore crowd crush.   As cities become more densely populated the chance of finding yourself in one if these pressed increases. Be careful and aware when you are in a crowd.  Learn more here: New Yorker Article (2011) Reddit Thread BBC Documentary on the Hillsborough Disaster ______________________ NEXT WEEK: We conclude with Jules’ pick “The Battle of Kruger”. The Happiness of Pursuit Podcast - Episode #98 with Casey Cease Would you ever be able to forgive someone for killing someone you loved? What will you learn from this episode of The Happiness of Pursuit Podcast: >>The importance of forgiveness >>How to bounce back (from any situation) >>The need to take action >>How to build a business from a personal struggle When Casey was in his Junior Year of high school, Casey was battling a growing depression. After having his heart-broken, and hearing a distressing story he left a party he was hosting late at night, against the best efforts of his friends to keep him there. As he was leaving his neighborhoodin despair, he changed his mind, turned around, and was headed home. As he was nearing his home his friend was in the middle of the road waving him, he swerved to avoid him and crashed. When he swerved, he turned in the same direction his friend jumped. He hit him going 80 mph. When he awoke in the hospital he was told by a State Trooper that he had killed his friend. While he was in the hospital, the parents of his friend came to the hospital and forgave Casey! As a parent to two young children, I can't imagine their loss, but more mind blowing, I can't imagine what it took for them to forgive Casey. The challenge for Casey, he needed to find a way to forgive himself. What Happens When You Hit Rock Bottom? For years after the accident, Casey battled depression, and thoughts of suicide. It wasn't until Casey publicly shared his story that he began to heal, and realized the power of story. In that healing process, Casey started to write a book about his experience to help others battle through their own personal tragedies. In his writing process and publishing process, Casey saw how little support there was for those who wanted to write and publish their book. There were basically two options, approach a traditional publisher or self-publish, but there was little support in between. He approached his mentor with the opportunity and eventually created Lucid Books, which is a Partnership Publisher. The irony in Casey's story, he is dyslexic. I'm probably one of the only dyslexic publishers in the world. When you hit rock bottom, the only direction left to go is up! To get the complete show notes, visit www.douglasjfoley.com/98

What would it take to get Casey Jenks functional fitness sainthood status? Is that a thing? If we just put his face on a medal and wear it around our gym, will that do the trick? Casey’s the creator of Fitbot, the software that keeps our personal training programs from being our personal nightmares. One thing we’ve found as gym owners is that people very rarely stumble upon a great opportunity without first encountering a world of pain. For Casey (and for us before he came along with Fitbot,) the pain was in the logistics of maintaining individualized fitness plans for personal training clients. To manage all the aspects of a program with remote, in-person, and hybrid clients, the whole digital circus would have to come to town: email, Excel, Google Docs, Evernote, Vimeo, copying, pasting, smartphones, desktops. When Casey would ask other coaches how they were keeping track of fitness plans, the same gigantic list of tools would come up. Luckily for all of us in fitness entrepreneurship, Casey already happened to be a software developer. “I got sick of it, and decided to fix it. And I’ve believed that I could do a better job than what was being done. And I believe that what coaches and trainers do is a super-important part of society, and the tools they had at the time were just complete shit. And I believe that they deserve better.” But let’s back up to why efficient individualized fitness plans are even necessary: A lot of coaches start with group fitness, and this is where they feel most comfortable. So this is sometimes where they want to stay. But personal training is what your gym needs in order to extend the lifecycle of your members. We see a ton of burnout after two years, but with a robust personal training program, you not only extend the interest and commitment of your clients, but you create a useful career path for your coaches. Join us as we talk to Casey about how well-managed personal training programs increase income, improve employee and client retention, and get the best athletic results.

Photo by Bigstock Photo: Bialasiewicz"I thought I recognized the name," said Aggie. "It's here in the paper right on the front page."   Things really heat up in today's episode. Relationships go through some rocky times, and Francis and Casey's is no different. In our last episode, Francis became suspicious that Casey was dating other women when Casey had her send roses to a woman named 'Viva Cramer'. When Casey explained that Viva had practically raised him, Francis realized that this woman wasn't a girlfriend and she quickly got over her worries. But in this episode, Francis hears some news about Viva Cramer. Aggie reads it to her from the morning paper. (This really must be a small town newspaper because Aggie finds the news of Viva's divorce right on the front page.) It isn't so much the divorce that bothers Fran as it is Viva's age. When she hears that Viva is only 31 years old, she immediately thinks, "What a scoundrel! He has another woman!" When Casey drops in, he is met with sarcasm and a cold shoulder. He has no idea what has gotten in to Fran, and apparently, Aggie doesn't understand it either.  But I'm sure you won't be left in the dark — you'll understand it from Fran's point of view. Take note of the sarcasm and you'll see how  couples sometimes fight in English.   Have fun learning the keywords with English-Chinese Flashcards and Games.DL017 Keywords on Quizlet Well, unfortunately, we leave Francis sobbing, very upset. She feels tricked by that scoundrel, Casey. She doesn’t feel like his special ‘one and only’ anymore. Can you understand her pain? What about Casey’s confusion? He really doesn’t seem to get it, does he? Can you think of any other explanation for Casey sending roses to a young woman who just got divorced? Leave your ideas in the Comments below. I’m curious to see what you come up with.
