The idea of a pristine kitchen with clean countertops feels distinctively American, or an all-American idealist. However, the concept of the American ideal, or the American dream, desperately needs to be challenged. How better to do that than through food? My guest this week, author and filmmaker Jill Damatac, does just that in her new memoir, Dirty Kitchen: A Memoir of Food and Family.  Jill was born in the Philippines, raised in the US, and is now a UK citizen living in the San Francisco Bay Area. Her film and photography work has been featured on the BBC and in Time, and at film festivals worldwide; her short documentary film Blood and Ink (Dugo at Tinta), about the Indigenous Filipino tattooist Apo Whang Od, was an official selection at the Academy Award–qualifying DOC NYC and won Best Documentary at Ireland's Kerry Film Festival. Jill holds an MSt in Creative Writing from the University of Cambridge and an MA in Documentary Film from the University of the Arts London. Her new book, Dirty Kitchen, is a food memoir of 22 years undocumented in the United States. In today's episode, we explore her memoir as a unique narrative that combines recipes, Filipino histories and mythologies, American immigration experiences, food writing, and personal narratives. Jill describes how she structured the book, how Filipino diasporic recipes relate to diasporic and migrant experiences, and the relationship between American foods and rebuilding a sense of self through Filipino foods after living undocumented for many years.  Resources: Buy Dirty Kitchen: A Memoir of Food and Family Website: https://www.jilldamatac.com/ Instagram: @jilldamatac

Send us a textJoin me as I sit down with Claudia Katayanagi, an award-winning documentary filmmaker whose work brings hidden histories to light. As a fourth-generation Japanese American, Claudia's personal and professional journey led her to uncover the dark realities of World War II's "Citizen Isolation Centers," a topic explored in her powerful documentary A Bitter Legacy. In our conversation, we dive deep into the intersection of past and present injustices, examining how the forced internment of Japanese Americans echoes in today's mass deportation threats, immigrant detentions, and violations of civil rights. We discuss the Enemy Aliens Act of 1798, used as a justification during WWII and again today by the current administration. Claudia's work, including her latest film, Exile - Community in Conflict, confronts these historical parallels head-on. She shares her firsthand experiences documenting protests at detention centers across the country, from Texas to California, and the urgent need for truth-telling in the face of rising xenophobia. We also discuss the power of art and storytelling as acts of resistance—how the men and women imprisoned during WWII used paintings, poetry, and prayer to sustain their spirits, and how those lessons resonate in today's fights for justice. With history repeating itself in disturbing ways, Claudia's activism through Tsuru for Solidarity reminds us that silence is not an option. This episode will challenge you. It will inform you. And it will push you to take action. Tune in, learn the truth, and—most importantly—use your voice. Protest. Organize. Vote. Because the fight for justice never ends. ENCORE e85 tracey friesen (in memoriam) - narratives of resilience

conscient podcast

Play Episode Listen Later Jan 9, 2025 40:09

What's starting to interest me is stories of resilience for a post-carbon world. What are we going to need for our emotional well-being? It's going to be a different world, not long from now. If we do this, and we must do this, this transition has to happen and there's going to be a sense of loss and sacrifice and challenge, not just with what's happening externally from a climate point of view, but in how we're going to have to make changes to our lives and reorient our energies in terms of our advocacy. I feel like there's an opportunity for artists - I'm more connected to the film and television sector and the documentary community - but throughout the system, to be able to provide realistic and yet reassuring narratives about what the upside of all this might be.This bonus episode is dedicated to the memory of media producer, art and climate champion and cultural impact leader Tracey Friesen, who passed away on Monday, January 6, 2025 in Vancouver. I offer my deepest condolences to Tracey's family and her countless friends and colleagues. I'm still on break from producing new episodes of conscient. I'm mostly meditating these days but also taking courses such as Surviving the Future.I'm to think through how podcasts such as this one, can be most useful future forward. More on this later. For now, while I'm on break, I thought it would be interesting to publishing a series of ENCORE or replay episodes drawn from previous seasons of conscient.I actually got the idea my fellow podcaster Alice Irene Whittaker whose created a REPLAY series drawn from her Reseed podcast and it's a good listen. I recommend any episode but in particular Episode 8 - Reflecting Climate Grief Through Music with Tamara Lindeman.  And I'm going to start on a sad note, but also one celebrating the life of Tracey Friesen. You'll hear, once again, e85 tracey friesen – narratives of resilience for a post carbon world which I recorded in 2021.For those of you who don't know Tracey, let me provide context this way. I'll read you an excerpt from a newsletterissued by the Story Money Impact organization in Vancouver that Tracey founded in 2019 and which is now run by Sue Biely. This excerpt will give you an idea of their appreciation of Tracey: Tracey was a gifted community-builder and mentor – equal parts fearless, wise, and energetic – with an insatiable curiosity. Her forthrightness left no doubt about where she stood when it came to fighting for social and environmental justice. She was a visionary tactician who recognized a gap in Canada's documentary sector, so she rolled up her sleeves and researched and published her 2016 book about impact producing,Story, Money, Impact: Funding Media for Social Change. Tracey's book became the catalyst that set this organization into motion.Thank you Sue and the team at Story, Money, Impact for that. I first met Tracey on September 21, 2021 at a event called Processing the federal election during a climate emergencyorganized by the Climate Emergency Unit. Stacey was impressive. Shortly after we collaborated on the mission circle of SCALE, the Sectoral Climate Arts Leadership for the Emergency network. We later became friends and often went for long walks in Ottawa or Vancouver to strategize about art and climate action but also the challenges of day-to-day life: supporting elders, being a parent, figuring out what to do… Tracey was a compassionate listener and a very wise advisor.  I loved the way she understood and advocated for the power of storytelling, and I think her words will be important to us in the future. I hope we can continue her good work amplifying the voices of artists. Here's another excerpt:We do need the scientists, and we do need all of the work being done across all of the important social issues that are happening right now. And we really do need the storytellers and to validate that their story driven, narrative driven, emotionally driven pieces of work will help to touch people now to change their behavior or will help to soothe or reassure or be with them in the world post transition.Let's go back in time: 2021 with the COVID pandemic in full swing. Tracey and I are sitting, meditation style, in her living room in Vancouver. Heads up that in this episode you'll also hear excerpts from conscient podcast e26 klein – rallying through art and e54 garrett – empowering artists in between our conversation. Finally, for your convenience, I've also added a complete transcript of the episode on the episode web site including links to the events and organizations that Tracey mentions during our exchange.  *END NOTES FOR ALL EPISODESHey conscient listeners, Thanks for your presence. In this episode of Talking Taiwan, I started off speaking with Taiwanese American documentary filmmaker Hsuan Yu Pan about how she got interested in documentary filmmaking. As we talked about her films, we covered a broad range of topics from the COVID-19 pandemic to parallels between the 2017 travel bans that barred people from seven Muslim majority countries from entering the U.S. and internment of Japanese Americans in the1940s. Time and time again entire groups of people have been targeted and blamed groups.   Related Links: https://talkingtaiwan.com/documentary-films-on-the-pandemic-immigration-and-human-rights-issues-our-talk-with-taiwanese-american-filmmaker-hsuan-yu-pan-ep-301/   This led us back to the pandemic and recalling the high incidence of Asian hate that happened at that time. Her current film project Hear, Eat, Home touches on many of these topics including the Syrian Revolution and Russia's invasion of Ukraine in 2022. After speaking to Hsuan Yu I get the sense that through her documentary filmmaking she wishes to create understanding so that history doesn't repeat itself and to foster more empathy in the world.  Below in the Related Links section is a link where you can support and watch a work in progress version of Hsuan Yu's film Hear, Eat, Home.   Here's a little preview of what we talked about in this podcast episode: Hsuan Yu's upbringing and how she initially had aspirations to be a visual artist How Hsuan Yu got interested in documentary filmmaking How Hsuan Yu's early experiences editing wedding videos taught her how to use video footage to tell a story How her work at Bric TV taught her how to find stories How she came up with the concept for her documentary film Alone Together that was shot during the pandemic How footage for Alone Together was gathered and planned How Alone Together featured footage from 11 different countries What Hsuan Yu learned from making the film Alone Together Hsuan Yu views her filmmaking as being about telling people's stories How she met the Taiwanese puppeteer, Mr. Tsai who is the subject of her documentary film project I, Puppet How Hsuan Yu was able to encourage Mr. Tsai to do some impromptu puppetry in New York's Washington Square Park How Mr. Tsai attended a Puppet Slam event in Coney Island, NY and brought the puppet slam concept back to his puppet museum in Taipei, Taiwan The relationship between Mr. Tsai and his father who is also a puppeteer How and why Mr. Tsai's parents didn't want him to become a puppeteer What Hsuan Yu loves about making documentaries Her documentary film project Hear, Eat, Home How two of the subjects of the film Hear, Eat, Home, Kinan Azmeh and Kevork Mourad are members of Yo-yo Ma's Silk Road Ensemble How the internment of Japanese Americans and the travel bans of 2017 (aka Muslim bans) are examples of how the U.S. government has labeled certain groups of people as a threat and discriminated against them How Kinan Azmeh was affected by the travel bans of 2017 (aka Muslim bans) How different groups have been blamed such as the Japanese Americans, Muslim Americans and Asian American How as a documentary filmmaker Hsuan Yu feels that sne should document history so that people can learn from history Kevork Mourad's background and family story What the film Hear, Eat, Home is about Hear Eat Home tells the story of Syrians, Japanese Americans and Ukrainians What Hsuan Yu believes makes a good documentary How Hsuan Yu was trying to finish working on Hear, Eat, Home in 2020, but she wasn't satified with it When the Russian invasion of Ukraine happened in 2022 Hsuan Yu felt that she should include stories of her Ukrainian friends in to the film Hear, Eat, Home Hsuan Yu plans to complete Hear, Eat, Home me next year Hear Eat Home is available for view as a work in progress until January 5th Anyone wishing to support the completion of Hsuan Yu's film Hear, Eat, Home can make a donation on the link provided on TalkingTaiwan.com for this episode   Related Links: https://talkingtaiwan.com/documentary-films-on-the-pandemic-immigration-and-human-rights-issues-our-talk-with-taiwanese-american-filmmaker-hsuan-yu-pan-ep-301/

As individuals we are the sum total of all our experiences. So it is with Michael Lienau. From a childhood interest in film to a career as a documentary filmmaker, he has left his mark. A close encounter with Mt. Saint Helens eruptions set him on a path to study and document volcanoes. On the way he has translated science into videos that inform and educate generations of people. During the podcast several video productions focusing on volcanoes were mentioned. Here is the Smithsonian Institution National Museum of Natural History Global Volcanism Program for the VolFilm Episodes:https://volcano.si.edu/gallery/VideoCollection.cfm?subject=VOLFilms&language=EnglishAnd specifically the ones produced in English language:Human Experiences with Lava Flowshttps://vimeo.com/666125121Debris Avalanches and Landslideshttps://vimeo.com/666128789Health Hazards of Ashhttps://vimeo.com/666121806For over 45 years Michael Lienau has been an award-winning filmmaker and cinematographer, working in documentaries, television, feature films, commercials, corporate, government and new media. When Mount St. Helens erupted on May 18, 1980, 20-year-old Michael Lienau was one of the first cinematographers to photograph the devastation around the mountain from the ground. Caught in the second largest eruption, the camera crew barely escaped with their lives. Michael's dramatic footage was seen worldwide in IMAX theaters and on television. His unforgettable experience on the mountain fueled a life-long desire to communicate his own story and those of other eyewitnesses in an independent dramatic documentary, “THE FIRE BELOW US: Remembering Mount St. Helens.” This seven-time award-winner became the longest running, most requested, highest rated independent film on National Geographic Television and was also seen internationally on Discovery Networks and PBS.His life changing experience at the 1980 Mount St. Helens eruption led Michael to engage with world-class earth scientists to better understand Earth processes, including plate tectonics related to volcanoes, earthquakes and tsunamis. Much of Michael's affinity for science came from his father, a nuclear physicist who later became a leading expert in the development of geothermal resources around the world.Check out Michael's main website: Global Net ProductionsMajor Endorsements:!Rescheduled January 2025! For the past 50 years, Ken Burns has written, directed and produced historical films on a wide variety of topics, from country music and baseball to the Vietnam War and the Brooklyn Bridge. His brand-new film investigates the life of Leonardo da Vinci who, very appropriately for this show, painted The Last Supper! So host Rachel Belle consults an Italian archaeologist about what Jesus and the 12 apostles were actually eating in the famous painting.   Over 20 years ago, Burns helped open a restaurant in his small New Hampshire town called The Restaurant at Burdick's. He claims to be a silent partner, but his name is printed on the brunch, lunch and dinner menus! He'll explain what the Ken Salad is and how it came to be.  Many famous dishes are named after real people, from the Caesar salad to eggs Benedict. We explore the stories behind some of the most well-known eponymous foods, like Granny Smith apples and the Cobb salad.   Pre-order Rachel's cookbook Open Sesame, out November 12, 2024! Each film asks questions about senses of home, heritage, memory, and displacement among Jewish North Africans. In the interview, Fitoussi and Cohen, who both come from North African Jewish families, discuss their personal relationships with their Jewish, Arab, French, and American identities. Albert Memmi, a prominent Tunisian Jewish author, influenced both filmmakers, as his writings articulate the complexity of Jewish North African identity in relation to class, colonialism, postcoloniality, ambivalence, and exile. Margaux Fitoussi is a visual anthropologist. Her work has screened at Film Society of Lincoln Center in New York, Director's Note, Musée d'art et d'histoire duJudaïsme in Paris, Cultural Pinacothèque in Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo, and SAVVY Contemporary in Berlin. She studied literature at the Ecole Normale Supérieure de la rue d'Ulm and at the Sorbonne. In 2017, she was a student at the Ecole documentaire de Lussas where she directed her first short documentary, Avant le depart (26'), which was selected at several festivals in France and internationally. Send us a textIn this special episode of the Breakfast with Tiffany Show, Tiffany Rossdale sits down with Australian filmmaker Felicity Tillack, whose latest documentary, We Exist, shines a spotlight on the lives of LGBTQ+ individuals in rural Japan. Living in Kyoto, Felicity brings a unique perspective to this underrepresented community, exploring what it means to be queer in areas where being out isn't just uncommon, but can feel isolating and even dangerous. Together, Tiffany and Felicity unpack the inspiration behind the documentary, the challenges of making it, and the powerful stories it captures. The conversation dives deep into the heart of Felicity's personal journey. She shares a pivotal experience from her time teaching in a small Japanese town, where an elderly woman's casual, dismissive remark about a famous gay celebrity deeply affected her. This moment planted the seed for We Exist, and Felicity explains how it became a driving force in her mission to give rural LGBTQ+ people a platform to tell their own stories. These voices, often unheard in larger media discussions, highlight the unique struggles faced by queer individuals living outside Japan's urban centers.Tiffany, who played a vital role as the host and producer on the documentary, shares her own reflections on what drew her to the project. She discusses how her background, both as a transgender woman and an advocate for LGBTQ+ rights, made her passionate about helping Felicity bring these stories to life.
