Trigger Warning: loss, suicidal ideation Jennifer is a wife, mother of four, and an educator who is passionate about helping struggling students. One evening on a routine run to pick up her child, she collides with a motorcyclist. Despite her desperate prayers and efforts made, he passes away. Everything begins to unravel and life as she knew it was falling apart, her identity, faith and mental health. She battles the voices of guilt and whispers of shame and countless questions without hope of answers on this side of heaven. In this episode Jennifer shares: A bit of her faith walk The night of the accident and praying for a miracle The unimaginable loss, shock and facing the possibility of prison Her rock solid faith being shaken for the first time How God moved through people and circumstances A vision in a church service God gave her of David in heaven and a word from God Fully surrendering her fate and trusting it to God before her court decision Learning about "cities of refuge" found in the Bible Being called to share her testimony for the first time and its effect Being led to serve in a ministry to help others who are seeking hope after causing accidental death or injury "I will tell you, in those darkest, scariest places, have hope for the day because God has a plan. The work done on the cross was meant for you too. That there is nothing, absolutely nothing, that can separate you from the love of God that he is in complete control. He will give you perfect peace and if you trust him, he will make those things work out for good." -Jen Eikenhorst In the same way, the Spirit helps us in our weakness. We do not know what we ought to pray for, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us through wordless groans. And he who searches our hearts knows the mind of the Spirit, because the Spirit intercedes for God's people in accordance with the will of God. And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose. Humans have a tendency to see the glass as half full. What arguments can be made on behalf of the half-empty perspective? Whether it's evaluating your life or making decisions about becoming a parent, viewing things through a pessimistic lens could ultimately help reduce suffering in the world.David Benatar is a professor of philosophy and director of the Bioethics Centre at the University of Cape Town. He is also the author of several books. His latest book, titled The Human Predicament: A Candid Guide to Life's Biggest Questions, explores the meaningfulness of life. David and Greg discuss optimism versus pessimism and the positive and negative qualities that they both possess. David talks about suicide and the historic and where our views on it have evolved from. David and Greg talk about the ethics of having children, what true immortality would really mean, and how to get the most out of our time on the hedonic treadmill of life.*unSILOed Podcast is produced by University FM.*Episode Quotes:General broad pessimism is a product of the clear-eyed view48:48: General broad pessimism is a product of the clear-eyed view. If you look at the human condition realistically, you're going to reach unhappy conclusions about all the things I've said that you should reach unhappy conclusions about. But now the question is, "Well, what do you do with that information?" Do you just become morose? Do you withdraw? What do you do with this information? And one mistake would be to become overly morose about it, to derive no joy, because then what happens is there's a kind of self-fulfilling prophecy there where you're making; there's another feedback loop. You're making it actually worse for yourself than it would be if you didn't have that kind of response to the pessimism. At the same time, I don't think you should fall into optimism because now you're going to lose the clear-eyed view. So, what I would say is preserve the clear-eyed pessimistic view but be pragmatic. Is there a feedback loop between the subjective and the objective?18:29: If you think your life is better than it is, it objectively becomes a bit better. That doesn't mean it reaches the level you think it's at. It doesn't completely eliminate the gap between the subjective and the objective, but the subjective view makes it a little better. And similarly, when we're speaking about negative evaluation. So, there is that feedback loop.Life's meaning doesn't have to be broad22:05: I don't think that we should conclude from the absence of that kind of meaning that our lives have no meaning. Because they do have meaning at more micro-levels, and we matter to other people. We can have a positive impact on people and beings around us. And I don't think we should pretend that isn't the case simply because our lives can't have a broader kind of meaning. On the relationship of quality and meaning of life13:29: There are different views about what the relationship is between quality and meaning. Some people want to treat meaning as part of the quality of life. Others want to separate it out. There is some value in separating them, but I don't want to be committed to that view. I don't think we need to be.Show Links:Recommended Resources:A. J. Welcome to The Nonlinear Library, where we use Text-to-Speech software to convert the best writing from the Rationalist and EA communities into audio. This is: "Insider EA content" in Gideon Lewis-Kraus's recent New Yorker article, published by To be stuck inside of Mobile on December 1, 2022 on The Effective Altruism Forum. Direct link (to New Yorker website). Alternative link (publicly accessible). This piece from Gideon Lewis-Kraus (the writer for the MacAskill piece) is a recent overview of how EA has reacted to SBF and the FTX collapse. Lewis-Kraus's articles are probably the most in-depth public writing on EA, and he has had wide access to EA members and leadership. The New Yorker is highly respected and the narratives and attitudes in this piece will influence future perceptions of EA. This piece contains inside information about discussions or warnings about SBF. It uses interviews from a "senior EA", and excepts from an internal Slack channel used by senior EAs. When my profile of MacAskill, which discussed internal movement discord about Bankman-Fried's rise to prominence, appeared in August, Wiblin vented his displeasure on the Slack channel. As he put it, the problem was with the format of such a treatment. He wrote, “They don't focus on ‘does this person have true and important ideas.' The writer has no particular expertise to judge such a thing and readers don't especially care either. Instead the focus is more often on personal quirkiness and charisma, relationships among people in the story, ‘she said / he said' reporting of disagreements, making the reader feel wise and above the substantive issue, and finding ways the topic can be linked to existing political attitudes of New Yorker readers (so traditional liberal concerns). This is pretty bad because our great virtue is being right, not being likeable or uncontroversial or ‘right-on' in terms of having fashionable political opinions.” There are claims of a warning about SBF on the Slack channel: This past July, a contributor to the Slack channel wrote to express great apprehension about Sam Bankman-Fried. “Just FYSA,”—or for your situational awareness—“said to me yesterday in DC by somebody in gov't: ‘Hey I was investigating someone for [x type of crime] and realized they're on the board of CEA' ”—MacAskill's Centre for Effective Altruism—“ ‘or run EA or something? Crazy! I didn't realize you could be an EA and also commit a lot of crime. Like shouldn't those be incompatible?' (about SBF). I don't usually share this type of thing here, but seemed worth sharing the sentiment since I think it is not very uncommon and may be surprising to some people.” In a second message, the contributor continued, “I think in some circles SBF has a reputation as someone who regularly breaks laws to make money, which is something that many people see as directly antithetical to being altruistic or EA. (and I get why!!). That reputation poses PR concerns to EA whether or not he's investigated, and whether or not he's found guilty.” The contributor felt this was a serious enough issue to elaborate a third time: “I guess my point in sharing this is to raise awareness that a) in some circles SBF's reputation is very bad b) in some circles SBF's reputation is closely tied to EA, and c) there's some chance SBF's reputation gets much, much worse. But I don't have any data on these (particularly c, I have no idea what types of scenarios are likely), though it seems like a major PR vulnerability. I imagine people working full-time on PR are aware of this and actively working to mitigate it, but it seemed worth passing on if not since many people may not be having these types of interactions.” (Bankman-Fried has not been charged with a crime. The Department of Justice declined to comment.) The suggestion is that EA leadership, while not knowing of any actual crime, accepted poor behavior and norm breaking because of the resources Bankman-Fried provided. In other words, it seems as th...

Anne is a mom to two boys- James and Charlie. Before becoming a mom she was a Pastry Chef. After experiencing serious burn out in the restaurant industry, she shifted to coaching Crossfit. Then, while pregnant with her first son, she became certified as a Pregnancy and Postpartum Athleticism coach because she was not getting answers to her questions on exercise in pregnancy. She had her first son in a hospital with an obstetrician, and quickly realized that the whole experience was not what she wanted. Three years later, she had her second son at home under the care of a midwife. Both experiences taught her so much about herself as well as the birth world.Anne is a friend from my OG Crossfit gym in Brooklyn, shout out to Crossfit 718! I wanted to have her on the show to share her birth stories, and, more importantly, to talk us through why she had a hospital birth with her first baby and a home birth with her second. This is so important for people to hear because Anne's story is not unique. Many have a first baby in the hospital for a variety of reasons but partly if not entirely, because they were raised believing that this is the safest way to do things and they simply don't question it as a norm. But for many young and healthy women, having a baby is often the first time they are a “patient” in the hospital, and some will walk away from this experience feeling unsupported, others will feel as if they were fighting an uphill battle, some will be traumatized, obstetric violence and coercion is real. Some people have received the inaccurate memo that out of hospital birth is unsafe. Many don't know what a midwife is or exactly what we do or where we do it.Join us as Anne shares her journey with us.ResourcesChristiane McColskey, City Midwifery (Anne's Midwife mentioned in this episode)Tanya Wills, Manhattan Birth (Anne took a class with this awesome midwife to prepare for a home birth)New Yorker Article on home birth - Martine Jean Baptiste, one of the two midwives featured in this article will be a guest next season.Birth It Up By Leisel Teen, Mommy Labor Nurse, check out her podcast, episode #74 to hear our conversationOnline Childbirth Education. On this week's show, we begin (0:53) by looking at the uproar over a New Yorker article titled 'The Public-Shaming Pandemic' that was published last week. The feature covered, among other things, the social media abuse aimed at two wealthy Vietnamese sisters who caught the coronavirus back in March, but painted Vietnam poorly and contained several errors regarding the country's response to the pandemic. What does this episode say about foreign coverage of Vietnam, and of the way some Vietnamese perceive journalists and media outlets? A link to the article: https://www.newyorker.com/magazine/2020/09/28/the-public-shaming-pandemic Then (18:48), we discuss a new proposal from the Ministry of Education that would allow students at public middle and high schools to use their phones during class for 'educational purposes.' Is this realistic? What are the pros and cons? There is no Bánh Mỉ Banter this week.

With Dick Fain out, Mike Gastineau sits in, and it is the perfect day for him to be in too with the release of the New Yorker article quoting them on their feelings about Howard Schultz. Softy even gets in a few words we can't use on air in the piece. The Dawgs win yesterday, but not by much. Was this their wake up game, because maybe Thursday's wasn't? Still though, the team is a long way above where they've been for years. The Pac-12 on the other hand, is still the worst it has ever been. The Combine took place over the weekend. Does anybody really care. According to Softy's poll, the answer is yes, maybe 10 percent of people care. Everyone else, not so much.

Crowd Crush (tv series) When Casey thinks watering hole he thinks ‘gathering of people’ and crowd crush is that gathering taken to the extreme. A crowd starts acting like a fluid when it reaches a certain density. Extracting yourself from one of these crowds is often literally swimming upstream. The pilgrimage to Mecca for Hajj is one of the events that regularly draws massive crowds and therefore crowd crush. As cities become more densely populated the chance of finding yourself in one if these pressed increases. Be careful and aware when you are in a crowd. In this episode I speak about Russia’s interference in the 2016 U.S. elections. This is a prevalent topic in today’s media that doesn’t seem to be fleeting the way most coverage is nowadays. Podcast Stretching is a contentious topic, but much like last weeks episode on ice baths (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7IjJtb9HqXY), the science can be a minefield of unrealistic studies and sensationalised media headlines. The key to stretching before sport is in the details: - Dosage (25-30sec) of gently holding the position - The correct stretches (we love the crouching three for any running athletes, linked below) - And to follow the stretches up with a proper activation and dynamic warm-up series. We also cover: - Where the science on stretching has gone wrong and how it under appreciates the nuance of stretching pre-exercise. - How thinking and the scientific method are both valuable but need to be understood fully to apply - How a short dose of the right stretches can have an incredible restorative effect on alignment, performance and long-term injury reduction and recovery - We discuss thinking and the scientific method in general and how challenging traditional or preconceived theories can be challenging Some resources and extra reading/watching: New Yorker Article on the topic of thinking: http://www.newyorker.com/magazine/2017/02/27/why-facts-dont-change-our-minds Veritasium video on the flaws in the scientific method: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=42QuXLucH3Q A web page/article summarising the video: https://wakelet.com/wake/35a80e1c-0033-4db1-a5c1-28337f57d75b Some articles on the same topic: http://journals.plos.org/plosmedicine/article?id=10.1371/journal.pmed.0020124 https://fivethirtyeight.com/features/science-isnt-broken/#part1 The AIS stretching study (it was actually 2008): Negative effect of static stretching restored when combined with a sport specific warm-up component http://s3.amazonaws.com/academia.edu.documents/40275084/Negative_effect_of_static_stretching_res20151122-9050-vuil4j.pdf?AWSAccessKeyId=AKIAIWOWYYGZ2Y53UL3A&Expires=1489645276&Signature=5WSeDFCIJuSoUYmT8NN2FwHweeU%3D&response-content-disposition=inline%3B%20filename%3DNegative_effect_of_static_stretching_res.pdf Two of our favourite exaggerated stretching protocol studies: http://anneclairepannier.free.fr/files/etirements/THE%20EFFECT%20OF%20DIFFERENT%20WARM-UP%20STRETCH.pdf https://www.researchgate.net/profile/Matthew_Portas/publication/6493099_The_effect_of_static_ballistic_and_proprioceptive_neuromuscular_facilitation_stretching_on_vertical_jump_performance/links/0c960515bf28e28029000000.pdf The Crouching Three (our favourite stretches) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y8-8n_EyhIw&t=6s Core Advantage's activation and dynamic warm-up series: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SeQPAP-VhpY&t=33s https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5LZU2H-eSxY&t=36s An old article on the topic of stretching and athletic performance: http://www.coreadvantage.com.au/blog/2012/9/20/first-post?rq=stretching The dynamic component of our warm up routine https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5LZU2H-eSxY&t=3s To download our full warm up routine for free (PDF) head over to our website www.coreadvantage.com.au
Recently there was an article doing the rounds suggesting Ice baths are a waste of time, but when we dug a little deeper there was a little more to this story than first meets the ice... The RadioNZ article: http://www.radionz.co.nz/national/programmes/ninetonoon/audio/201835699/ice-baths-a-'bone-chilling-waste-of-time' The actual academic paper: http://pilarmartinescudero.es/Ene2017/Effects%20of%20cold%20water%20after%20resitance%20exercise.pdf New Yorker Article on thinking: http://www.newyorker.com/magazine/2017/02/27/why-facts-dont-change-our-minds Veritasium video on the scientific method: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=42QuXLucH3Q Our first Random thoughts on the topic of Cryotherapy: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pS_p04jvQ0Y PS: Ice baths for general recovery is a completely different topic to ice (RICE) for acute injury rehabilitation, we talk on that topic in the cryotherapy episode. You can also read more on RICE here: http://www.drmirkin.com/fitness/why-ice-delays-recovery.html PPS: This is Episode 52, which makes it one full year of Random Thoughts, thank you so much for watching, giving feedback and your continued involvement in some brilliant open discussion!
This week Hannah and Rachel discuss the women's march, protests and resistance in general, and the lack of intersectionality in the women's march. We also discuss self care and some really high brow television, with a special 1-800-DID-I-ASK.
