Jen (Charlotte Vega) and five of her friends decide to take a hiking trip in Virginia along the Appalachian Trail. Arriving in the community near the hiking trail, they begin preparing for the track and receive warnings from locals to not go off course. As they begin the hike, they see nature at its best- there are woods, waterfalls, rock formations etc. But of course, one of the members desires to go slightly off course and explore off track. Ignoring all warnings not to do so, they figure no harm could come from looking around. Soon they find themselves entering land which belongs to a secret community and disappear. While Jen and her friends all work together to try and stay alive, Jen’s father, Scott (Matthew Modine) also begins his own investigations regarding his daughter’s disappearance with hopes of catching up with her. I spoke to my friend Jen, a content creator from Toronto who has gained social media popularity and hosts the podcast, Jen and Tonic Podcast. Jen is a friend of Ioana Busoic ( Episode 199). Jen created a digital persona known as "Jen Advises You." The persona was based on Jen's dating life and daily musings. While Jen originally did this as a joke, her platform grew to over 75 thousand followers on Twitter. While amassing social media popularity, Jen realized that getting social media attention was not what she wanted. In our conversation we speak about social media clout, microagressions, and mental health. Find out more on Dreams Not Memes. Because one episode on their love for football wasn't enough, Jen and Nicole take another pass at this year's NFL season. The episode includes a quick synopsis on the shit storm that is the Cleveland Browns latest social spat, as well as talks about all their ways to enjoy the game. From go-to apps and drinks to why some men think they lay claim to all the good spots in front of the TV when the good games are on. To round out the episode they both take guesses on how they think each team will fair in week one. While Jen has a very calculated manner to how she selects the winners, Nicole over analyzes every game. While they both support their Bills and Cowboys week one match ups, they differ on several of the match ups.

Do you recognize this person? Relentlessly driven, often exhausted, setting extremely high expectations for herself (himself), never quite meeting them, unhappy, frustrated, short, and at the end of it?!! That’s close to how Jen Sherwood describes her previous existence. In this episode, Laura and Jen dig into some of the pressures we all seem to face in life, and those particularly experienced by women – media representations of what it requires to be beautiful, healthy, young, attractive, polished, professional, etc… It’s unrealistic, sometimes damaging, and not conducive to living a healthy, satisfying life if we allow ourselves to get caught up in those expectations, measures, practices. While Jen was that perfectionist, never-quite-meeting-expectations, young mom twenty years ago, she finally woke up one day and decided she wanted to feel better. Her journey started with a therapist, expanded to a coach who “rocked my world,” she says… and eventually brought her to a place of discovering what fills and feeds her at a deep level. Choosing to invest in herself, her sanity, and her future, Jen earned her coaching certification and left her job as a Pediatric Audiologist and how helps women reconnect with themselves and live better lives. “I’ve had so much self-doubt,” she explains. “When I’m vulnerable, there are so many more rich experiences…” She goes on to blast the myth about our practice of “armoring up” to go out and face the world as if we are all powerful, have it all together, and cannot be hurt by others. The truth is, we carry this heavy armor, but it doesn’t actually protect us; we still experience the hurts of life. Jennifer’s Bio Jennifer Sherwood works with women who are overwhelmed, feel pulled between the demands of work and home, rarely make time for themselves, and worry that this is as good as it gets. She helps them move themselves up on the priority list so can build a life they LOVE, not just tolerate.  Jen is a certified coach, speaker, and blogger. She is passionate about women making time for themselves so they can show up in their lives the way they want to...not stressed and resentful. Jen holds a master’s degree in Audiology (aka hearing science) and her previous career focus was in pediatrics, which means she knows a thing or two about working with women, moms, and families in times of stress or uncertainty.  Connect with Jennifer: Jennifer Online Jennifer on Facebook Jennifer on Instagram -- @jensherwood22

Jen Fry is the owner and CEO of Jen Fry Talks. Jen is also a native of Arizona, a former Division II athlete, and veteran volleyball coach with over 15 years of experience at the collegiate level with coaching stints at Elon University, the University of Illinois (2011 National Runner-Up), Washington State University, and Norfolk State University. She turned social justice educator when she realized there was a need for educating not only our student-athletes of all ages, but the administration, staff, and coaches who train them through an antiracist lens on issues of race, inclusion, intersectionality, diversity, and equity. Lastly, she is working on her Phd in Geography at Michigan State University. I learned so much in this conversation with Jen--about anti-racism in athletics; taking the onus off of athletes and including coaches and administrators in anti-racism education; getting coaches to acknowledge their power; and pushing for conversations on whiteness in predominantly white sports. While Jen's background mostly stems from volleyball, the lessons of Jen Fry Talks can be applied to all athletic communities. In fact, I would recommend that any athlete, coach, administrator, or sports fan (endurance or otherwise) listen to and reflect on Jen's words. Learn more about Jen Fry Talks! If you had no luck getting in touch with certain people - but the minute they said yes to being interviewed on your podcast - it was a success If your goal was to be seen as an expert and someone sends you an email asking you for your opinion - your podcast is a success If your goal was to "get the message out there" and your podcast has a number that is higher than zero - your podcast is a success. If your goal was to get something off your chest, you want to put your thoughts out into the universe - so you don't feel so invisible - and someone hears it - you're not invisible. Glenn the Geek has people write Christmas songs about his podcast at the horseradionetwork.com  Theracasts can be audio journals that can help you more than your audience in some cases, but they are much less expensive than therapy. Some might say you should do these in a private journal (and you can do that) but sometimes you need someone to hear you - even if its a complete stranger. When someone in your audience chimes in on a conversation that helps you save money or time - that is a bonus to your life. Binders Can Be a Good Thing When I asked Uncle Google what blinders are, I see that blinder "attach to a horse's bridle or hood and prevent a horse from seeing behind and beside him." I mention this alot because its important. Comparing your show to another show is one of the worst things you can do. Blinder can stop you from looking at your past (cause there may be regrets) and they help you focus on your future. Your current value is not based on your mistakes of the past.  Keep focused on your audience and answer every email, tweet, etc and keep the conversation going (don't just answer the question). It Might Take a Bit To Get Some Feedback I started a show called Your Podcast Consultant ( small lessons with big value) for those who like a shorter podcast. I've been doing it for nine months, and finally just got some feedback. The Power of Relationships Jen Briney doest the Congressional Dish podcast that every American should be subscribed to and she recently did an episode on Suprise Medical Bills in America and did a touching tribute to a listener who died. Jen monetizes the show on the "Value for Value" model (meaning it is 100% listener supported) and Jen explains how listeners are a bit like pen pals. It really shows the kind of relationships you build online. Likewise, when I heard Jen cry on her show remembering her listener I wanted to crawl through my phone and give her a giant hug. Why? Because of the relationship, I feel I have with her as a listener. While Jen will blow off and poke fun of herself for crying on the show, what it is - is courageous. She went 100% vulnerable on her show. This also helps build relationships with your audience. The No Agenda Show with John C Dvorak and Adam Curry do a show they deconstruct the media. Their audience is so engaged they are doing meetups to talk about their subject(s). Their audience loves the subject to much they want to continue on the discussion. They even set up a website at www.noagendameetups.com and there are MANY websites maintained by their audience with the goal of helping to promote the show Jim Collison is my cohost for Ask the Podcast Coach on Saturday mornings and host a show for his job at Gallop as well as Home Gadget Geeks. He just mentioned that he had started enjoying a cigar every now and then and he was contacted multiple times by his audience who wanted to send him their favorite cigar. Question of the Month This month I'm doing an audience survey (my first in YEARS) and I would love to know 1. What you like about the show 2. What you wish I'd change (I'm a big boy, be honest) 3. What would you like to hear in the future (guests, topics) Please go to www.schoolofpodcasting.com/question and leave your response (there may be a prize for a random person who takes the online version AND leaves an audio version) Last Five in Five What were the last five podcasts you listened to? We begin a revisitation of Trek TV by introducing The Original Series to special guest, Stand-Up Comedian, Jen Ives, by handpicking three episodes for her to watch.  Liam presents his case for why 'The Corbomite Maneuver' truly sums up the mission statement of Star Trek, Paul enjoys the campy sets (and definitely the dresses) of 'Who Mourns for Adonais' and Matt loves the complex motivations fuelling Spock's actions in 'Journey to Babel'. While Jen is creeped out by McCoy, enjoys seeing the Spock family dynamic (especially thicc Sarek) and absolutely cannot handle these long running times.  Make it a VERY Good Friday and join Spocklight and co back in the kitschy 60s heyday of sci-fi television, what better way is there to celebrate Easter?!   As usual you can find SPOCKLIGHT on: TWITTER - @spocklightpod INSTAGRAM – @spocklightpod FACEBOOK – https://www.facebook.com/spocklightpod/ EMAIL - spocklightpod@gmail.com Please Follow, like, share and all that good stuff.   You can find Jen @jenivescomedy on Twitter and her Musical Chairs Podcast @chairspod Credit for our wonderful theme music goes to the incredibly talented, Adam Johnston’s, you can find more of his work at - https://adamjohnstonuk.bandcamp.com/ Our beautiful artwork was created by Stephen Trumble, see more at http://www.stephentrumble.com

I want to introduce you to my friend, amazing momma, stylin designer and legit CEO BOSS WOMAN of JBloom Design, Jennifer Bonacorsi! Jenn and I met over a year ago when she brought Boot Camp Challenge® to JBloom. I went to help launch the program and was in a bit of shock and awe when I saw her show up in a boot! Yep, she had just had surgery on her foot but was so excited to do the program, she decided to do it in her boot and take the options. I immediately knew she was my kind of peoples. What I didn’t know at the time was how like-minded we were in other areas of our lives. For instance, we are both mamas; she to four beautiful girls and me, well, you know my fam. We both created companies and encountered so many obstacles we became warriors AND wonder women. We both work with AND like our husband (although we both demand “alone” time). And, we both rely on our faith during the trials of tribulations of not only the business life but also real life. And, we both enjoy running although we are NOT runners. As we sat down and began to share our stories, another thing struck me: Jenn’s courage. A few years in of starting the company that would become known as JBloom, she had to pivot. In order to keep her vision alive, she had to change her entire company. And she had to do it in a day. If any of you have had to make change in either your personal life or professional life, you know the challenge. And, she did it- with grace, gratitude and God. So, I would LOVE for you to grab your beverage of choice, take a comfy seat (or grab your water jug and take a walk) and listen as Jenn shares the story of JBloom, how she incorporates wellness in her crazy busy personal and professional life, and how she relies on her faith to change women’s lives across the country. Oh, and we also talk about the following: - How to balance family and a career - The number one strategy to keep you on track with your fitness routine - The challenges of incorporating your faith into your company. - How having your utilities turned off can be a “life” lesson (btw, it happened to both of us!) While Jen and I dive into some serious chat, we also enjoy a lot of laughs. And, for whatever reason, I said “a hundred percent” a HUNDRED times (sorry!). As always, I so appreciate you. And, I love your suggestions. Please continue to reach out with your ideas and comments.  It is why I do what I do.   Take care this week, make good choices and remember, women rock! Much love,LorsXoxo

Hey friends, I hope you are rockin your week! I want to introduce you to my friend, amazing momma, stylin’ television personality and legit dietician, Jennifer McDaniel. Jen and I met at our local television station over eight years ago. I was brought on to share fitness tips with the St. Louis peeps, and Jen was brought on to share nutrition tips. We chatted before and after our segments, and a friendship was struck. Many (more like tons) of you have asked me how to lose weight while going through menopause or the beginning stages of menopause. So, I reached out to Jen and asked if she would join me on our podcast and share with you how to help lose and/or maintain weight during this time of our life. Here are a few topics we cover: - Menopause weight gain – why it happens. - The best foods to eat to help you lose weight during this time. - The anti-weight gain menopause diet (yep, she tells us what to eat!) - The one truth Jen shared that SHOCKED me (and it will change WHAT time you eat!) - The best carbs to eat to maintain a lean body. - What to avoid if you are struggling with your sleep. While Jen and I dive into some serious business, we also enjoy a lot of laughs. We talk about what caused me not to poop, and why I love day drinking. If you have some time today, I would love for you to listen to our podcast. I have been doing this for thirty-four years, and I LEARNED something new listening to Jen! As always, I so appreciate you. And, I love your suggestions. Please continue to reach out with your ideas and comments.  It is why I do what I do. Take care this week, make good choices and remember, invest in yourself :) Much love,LorsXoxo

Former IDEO Mechanical Engineer turned Startup Freelance Consultant – Jen Davis-Wilson– Ep30 Jen Davis-Wilson worked for 12 years at IDEO. Since then, she has gone off on her own to be a startup freelance consultant. She typically works with clients in the San Francisco (Silicon Valley area). While Jen and I are both Mechanical Engineers, our careers and the way we go about creating client projects is quite different and it was interesting to hear a different perspective on the process. Some of the highlights/links we discuss: Industrial design versus Engineering Her work with Magic Instruments on a cool new guitar product to help beginners learn guitar How to test products? Make a rendering and put a product on ebay, kickstarter, etc. Also, 3D print a product and put on the same websites Examples: Justin Shook (who was on episode 3, owner of com and his etsy store Collector Craft One of my creations, the Led Zeppelin Object. I've found that fans of classic rock bands love re-created retro things you can't find anymore. com com Key Takeaways It was interesting to see how Jen's process is compared to what I am used to. She tends to work with bigger startups than my company and as a result seems to have a bigger team on her end, often backed with IDEO employees. It was also interesting to discuss the Solidworks work flow versus Industrial design CAD tools. While I prefer Solidworks because it is easy to update a file, I can understand why some designers work in other programs that are not parametric. And from my experience, some shapes are easier in other programs like Blender (and Jen mentioned Rhino). We had a good discussion about product testing. Some companies will make renderings to see if people will buy a product before it is made. However, traditionally big companies will use focus groups and interviews.   To Contact Jen Linked JenDaviswilson@gmail.com   The Engineering Entrepreneur Podcast is produced by Scott Tarcy, President of CADdesignhelp.com.
