Summer cometh: the grills get scraped clean, the buns are split, and hungry Americans get set to boil or broil their wursts, wieners, and sausages. In the summer of 2021, Jamie Loftus drove from coast to coast, tasting the vast array of hot dogs that America has to offer, consuming as many as four a day—and in one notable (or regrettable) instance, five. Chicago-style and the Coney Island special; drive-through and deli; chili and chile: Loftus devoured them all. Her ensuing book, Raw Dog: The Naked Truth About Hot Dogs, brings the glory and the gory. It may be the first to detail not only the different genders of pickle jars one can buy at a gas station, but also the horrific treatment of animals and workers at slaughterhouses, conditions that got distinctly worse during the pandemic. Loftus—stand-up comedian, TV writer, and creator of such illustrious one-season podcasts as “My Year in Mensa” and “Ghost Church”—joins us to talk about the wild world of that iconic American food. THIS WEEK on the GWA Podcast, I interview one of the most important, pioneering and impactful writers and novelists working today, Ruth Ozeki.  In this episode, we deep dive into looking, writing, observation and perception in a fascinating discussion that traverses objects, the written form, imagination and memoir. She is the author of four novels, My Year of Meats (1998); All Over Creation (2003); A Tale for the Time Being (which was shortlisted for the Man Booker Prize in 2013 and won the LA Times Book Prize); and more recently, The Book of Form and Emptiness (for which she won the Women's Prize for Fiction) – an extraordinary novel centred on 14 year old Benny who, after his father dies, begins to hear voices, with other objects in a magical realist sense taking on roles to speak. Ozeki's work is powerful, it breaks boundaries and reinvents storytelling and often melds ancient ideas with contemporary ones – looking at how they relate to our technology, religion, politics or pop culture.  In addition to her writing work, Ozeki is a Zen Buddhist priest, ordained in 2010 and a role that has influenced her two most recent novels; and a filmmaker, hailed for her 1995 work Halving the Bones, that looks at three generations of Ruth's maternal family history from Japan, to Hawaii and to a suburb in Connecticut.  But, aside from this, it is also Ozeki's non-fiction work that I highly admire, in particular her 2016 book “Timecode of a Face” – a part-memoir, part-experiment – influenced by a Harvard art historian that saw her sit in front of a mirror for three hours and examine her face as she traces each line, mark, crease and feature back to story from her past – which I cannot wait to get into in this episode! Rachel Kushner is the author of novels The Mars Room, The Flamethrowers, and Telex from Cuba, as well as a book of short stories, The Strange Case of Rachel K. Her career-spanning book of essays The Hard Crowd, solidified her place of authority amongst today's writers, covering everything from a Palestinian refugee camp to her young life in the San Francisco music scene. Kushner has won the Prix Médicis and been a finalist for the Booker Prize, the National Book Critics Circle Award, and was twice a finalist for the National Book Award in Fiction. Ottessa Moshfegh is a stand-out in contemporary literature. With worlds and minds that manage to be both dark and intricate, as well as elegant and neurotic, her writing trails a unique and poignant thread of what it means to live in the now. She is the author of the novels My Year of Rest and Relaxation and Eileen, the novella McGlue, the short story collection Homesick for Another World, and she has three film adaptations in the works. Her newest book, Lapvona, is a medieval fantasy set in a fictional village struggling with the sordid aftermath of a plague; “part Dostoevsky, part Poe, and entirely her own” (The Millions), the book showcases Moshfegh at seemingly her darkest.

All right, dear listeners, New Year's is upon us and, if you're like me, you may be thinking about your resolutions! And, if you're like me, at some point you may have written out too many resolutions—or created too high a bar to reach within those resolutions—and found that few of them were actually carried out. I decided to take a look at those resolutions and consider a potentially more effective way to write them. I'm talking about aspirations for growth instead of the rigidity of resolutions paired with small and reasonable improvements. At least, that is the topic of this episode with my very special guest and friend of the podcast, New York Times, best-selling author, AJ Jacobs (https://ajjacobs.com/)! AJ is the author of great books like My Year of Living Biblically, The Know-It-All, and, most recently, The Puzzler. All are must-reads and I've read many of his books two or more times! This is AJ's third visit, and upon reflection, it is because he represents so much of what this podcast is all about from a values perspective. The values he seems to live by and rock in his life are the same ones I attempt to embed in my own life and certainly the drivers for this podcast. You'll hear what they are but, to give you an advance on the four values which are: fun, curiosity, drive for excellence, and kindness. And these are the perfect fuel, I believe, for New Year's Aspirations! So, sit back and listen in as AJ and I have a jam session on New Year's Aspirations. The Puzzler: https://tinyurl.com/4bdewhuf

On today's episode of the podcast I'm crunching the numbers from my October profit report. If you missed last month's profit report, check out September's Profit Report here. Tomorrow is the LAST DAY to get your FREE TRIAL access to the VIP Tier of Profit Rx. I'm not sure when (or even if) I'll do this again, so be sure to get your access now before it goes away on the 11th. Recording this episode of the November Profit Report is an exciting time for me because Profit Rx, my signature program & monthly membership, turns one year old this month! At the time you're hearing this I'll be at Wedding MBA, showcasing Profit Rx, the Contract Vault, etc. at my booth, and speaking this year! Wedding MBA last year was when I officially launched Profit Rx. Now that I have one year of profit report data on how Profit Rx has been performing, I took a listen back to last year's November Profit Report. During that episode I shared that I had gone into $7,000 of business credit card debt to prepare for the launch of Profit Rx. I don't always recommend doing that, it can definitely be scary. If you are thinking of doing it, it's important to focus on ROI. And now that I have a year's worth of data, I can share my ROI with you. My Year to Date (YTD) Total Revenue from Profit Rx during January to October of 2022 is $70,000. When I launched, it brought in $12,000 in revenue in November during its first month. A big chunk of this money was from annual memberships. December gave me a better look at the monthly recurring revenue I was making on Profit Rx. I brought in $5,000 in December, indicating my MRR would be about $5,000 and that $7,000 of November's revenue was from annual memberships. While November's revenue was enough to pay off the business credit card debt, I split it between November and December. From November of last year to October of this year, Profit Rx has generated $87,000 in revenue. That's roughly a 12.5x return on investment (ROI) from my $7,000 investment. 2022 was supposed to be all about profit because Profit Rx was supposed to be my one signature offer. And it has been in almost all respects because it's made up about 56% of total revenue. I've spent the past six months or so thinking about how I really want to grow and scale this business in a variety of ways. In order to service a broader niche i.e. drag queens (through Drag Tax) and other creatives In order to bring a higher level of support into the membership with our new bookkeeping team In order to support folks who have moved passed any form of DIY stages In order to support folks with their taxes at a higher level This has meant making even more investments. October Goals - Projected vs. Actual Profit Rx: $12,000 → $7,000Vault: $1,000 → $2,800Book: $200 → $2001-on-1: $1,500 → $1,500Other: $2,500 (affiliate payouts) → $3,700Then we had other of: $775Bookkeeping: $400Template: $410 = $17,200 projected/$16,800 actual
