In this episode of the Second Degree Podcast, Emily Merrell sits down with Jen Jamula, co-founder of GoldJam Creative, to explore the fascinating journey from acting to entrepreneurship. Jen shares how her theater background inspired the creation of a unique communications training company that helps individuals and teams master public speaking, storytelling, and overcoming gender bias in the workplace. Tune in to hear Jen's insights on adapting your career, the power of storytelling in pitches, and how emotional connections can transform your communication skills. Whether you're an aspiring entrepreneur, actor, or just looking to elevate your professional presence, this episode is packed with actionable advice and inspiration! What You'll Listen:Jen shared the origin of GoldJam, a communication training company she co-founded with Allison Goldberg. The name "GoldJam" combines their last names, Goldberg and Jamula, symbolizing their creative partnership. GoldJam offers interactive, research-based training sessions on topics like public speaking, storytelling, and combating gender bias in the workplace.Jen talked about her journey from acting to entrepreneurship. Initially pursuing an acting career after studying theater at Yale, she eventually found more fulfillment in creating and producing original performances. This shift led her and Allison to establish GoldJam in 2014, leveraging their theatrical backgrounds to coach professionals in communication. The early days of GoldJam were a mix of performances and coaching. Jen and Allison joined a co-working space in New York, which played a crucial role in gaining their first clients, including BuzzFeed and Lean Startup Machine. Jen emphasized the importance of adaptability and persistence, highlighting the balance she and Allison brought to their partnership—Allison as the "gas" and Jen as the "brakes."In 2021, Jen became the sole owner of GoldJam after Allison shifted her focus to comedy. Jen now runs the business independently, with a team of facilitators who assist with training, social media, and newsletters. She continues to conduct both virtual and in-person training sessions and offers individual coaching.Jen discussed the art of pitching, emphasizing the need to shift from a transactional to an emotional approach. She shared insights on using storytelling to create a connection with the audience, making the pitch more compelling. Jen also touched on Aristotle's elements of influence—ethos, pathos, and logos—and how they can be applied to effective communication and pitching.Reflecting on her journey, Jen encouraged listeners to embrace adaptability and not be afraid to reach out and make connections. She stressed the value of persistence and the importance of crafting a pitch that resonates on an emotional level, rather than just presenting data or solutions. To learn more about Jen Goldber, visit her website GoldJam Creative and follow on instagram at @GoldJameCreativeSign up for The Second Degree Membership! 2023 was a rough year for me. And I suspect it may have been rough for you too. In hopes of lightening things up as we head into a more peaceful and productive 2024, I interview Alli Goldberg, an up and coming comedian who, among other things, hosts a live dating show, Love Isn't Blind, in which the men cannot speak. Alli and I talk about what she has found out about dating given her unique perspective as one who is currently dating and who MCs a dating show. She is funny, insightful and illuminating. It is truly an enjoyable conversation. Listen now, as I ask a question I've never uttered before, “If you were a sex toy, which one would you be?” Allison Goldberg is a creator whose work has been covered by LA Magazine, Good Morning America, The Savage Lovecast, WIRED, NPR, The LA Times, and more. Most recently, she sold her live comedy show How To Break Up By Text to a well-known podcasting platform (releasing in Feb 2024). In that show and format, celebrities perform your break-up texts and then an expert joins as we break down your break up. For the past year, she's been hosting her newest creation, Love Isn't Blind, which is a comedy/dating show where the men can't speak. Alli was recently named one of the top 10 funniest women in NYC. Alli is a graduate of Yale University. If you like what you've heard at The Evolved Caveman podcast, support us by subscribing, leaving reviews on Apple podcasts. Comedian Allison (Alli) Goldberg is on a mission to make dating fun again. Once named one of the top 10 funniest women in NYC by Time Out NY, the now-Los Angeles based performer delights her public both on the stage and on the air. A friend of previous SOTI podcast guest Talia Lerner, Alli tells Irina and Michelle why dating provides such fertile material for her work from her matchmaking live comedy show "Love Isn't Blind" to her "How to Break up by Text" performances (the latter will soon be released as an audio show with celebrities reading the texts out loud and experts analyzing them!). Come hear how Alli's worst online date ever was with a fellow Yalie who was in the middle of convincing his former lover to have an abortion, why it's tricky to find the right male contestants for her matchmaking show, and what her philosophy is to overcome fears about any creative endeavor. Allison Goldberg, creator of things to be enjoyed comedically, not only has a knack for showing a crowd a cracking good time through her own comedy driven game shows, but making a point with them at the same time. Goldberg pointedly made a feminist twist on the classic Dating Game format with her show, Love Isn't Blind, where the bachelors aren't allowed to speak and is exploring the extent (or limits) of AI when it comes to doing comedy with Comedians vs. AI. This week's TCB Field Report explores Goldberg's journey with addressing some of the most pressing issues of our time, but doing so with the tasty, tasty sugar of comedy. They are performing Blogologues in Palo Alto, CA this Friday, August 18th at the TheatreWorks Silicon Valley New Works Festival at the Lucie Stern Theater. The show is at 10pm! They will be back in NYC in September performing their other show, “How to Break Up By Text,” on September 15th at 8pm at The PIT! Who says curling has to stop when it gets hot outside? On a special summer edition of Broomstackers, Ed is joined by Adam Kapp, Michael Cohen, and Allison Goldberg as they venture to Tropicurl, a bonspiel that takes place on an island in the middle of Pittsburgh. The team ventured to a tiki bar, won a mystery box, and celebrated Canada Day in style, all while enjoying some excellent summer curling in the process. There's also talk about the GNCC's recent 150th anniversary, as well as a BYOC segment that brings together some of our favorite world leaders to form an elite curling rink. SHOW NOTES Curling Update: We lost our Sunday morning game 6-5 after clawing back from a 5-0 deficit to tie the game heading into the final end. Alas! Here's one source with some information on the history of curling in New York City. Critiki is "the guide to Tiki bars." Learn more about pawpaw! The official website for Thai Foon in Pittsburgh. The mystery box unboxing video! Here's a story on the tennis match that was interrupted by sex noises (includes some hilarious video). Finally, a baseball announcer tries to figure out what furries are after meeting them in Pittsburgh some years back. Happy Canada Day!
Can't get enough Bring Your Own Curler? Constantly searching for the nearest Pokestop whenever you're at a bonspiel? Then you'll love this special recording! Kelsey Schuder, Allison Goldberg, and Sean Mayne join me to make a team out of our favorite Pokemon, even if some of us are less knowledgeable about the subject than others. We even added a coach and alternate to make this a team worthy of any competitive Pokemon trainer! SHOW NOTES Here are links to more information on each of our chosen curlers: LEAD SECOND VICE SKIP ALTERNATE COACH
Playdowns for Mixed Nationals might be serious business, but that doesn't mean we can't record an episode of Broomstackers while we're there! I'm joined by Kelsey Schuder, Sean Mayne, and Allison Goldberg to talk about our time at the Bucks County Curling Club for the GNCC Mixed Championship. We recap our results and the local restaurant scene, mispronounce several words, and expose ourselves for the huge nerds we all are -- especially in this edition of Bring Your Own Curler. SHOW NOTES Congratulations to Team Melville for winning the GNCC Mixed Championship! They defeated Team Maroldo in the final, a game that came down to the last rock (appropriate for the tight-fought nature of the entire event). Here's the CurlingZone coverage of the event, including the final standings. Team Stopera ultimately lost to Korea in the final of the World Junior Men's Championship, but they still did a great job earning their silver medals. Way to represent American curling, guys! Bucks County Curling Club is still taking donations for their new warm room. More information can be found here. Broomstackers is back with a new episode recorded after a weekend at The Big Spiel, the 96-team curling extravaganza organized by the Twin Cities Curling Association. The event, spread out between four clubs in the Twin Cities area of Minnesota, proved to be a great time for Ed and the rest of his team: both on and off the ice. From games against national champions to sliding down Minehaha Falls, there was no shortage of fun to be found on this trip -- and we're more than happy to tell you all about it over drinks. This week's episode features host Ed Scimia along with Kelsey Schuder, Larry Bocchiere, and Allison Goldberg. SHOW NOTES You can pick up your own copy of Telestrations at Amazon! According to the St. Paul Curling Club website, the club boasts more than 1,200 members. After further review, the legality of taking a curling broom in a plane cabin as a carry-on is uncertain. Articles from 2013 show that hockey sticks were being allowed; however, the TSA website currently lists them as prohibited. Allison (and other curlers we know) have yet to run into problems attempting to board with their brooms, but it may be best to check them if you're not sure. Some photos mentioned during the episode:
Where's the romance in a Snapchat? The thrill in an email? When the conversation moves from online dating to texting, how much do flirty digital conversations represent how we're gonna interact in the flesh? And when we're on a dinner date and our lover's fingers are talking to someone else, how hot and bothered can we really get? On today's show, Ben is joined in the studio by Allison Goldberg and Jen Jamula, the founders of the theater troupe Blogologues and the No Text Weekend, which hits the real world September 23rd - 25th. We discuss what annoys us the most about how relationships are carried out via text, if the way we text represents the respect we have for the person on the other end of the line, and if it was a personal or professional drive that inspired the ladies to organize a massive event of events and texting abstinence. Can we put down our phone for 30 minutes and converse IRL? Listen and find out.
