Recently, I've had a few patients who have brought to my attention that weight loss is not always beneficial – and when done without proper support and guidance, can in fact be detrimental. These are patients who have been referred to me by other providers to assume care for their obesity treatment, when they come to me, I often find their health is compromised—they're lacking in essential nutrients, aren't taking necessary vitamins, and have likely lost a significant amount of muscle. This isn't the kind of weight loss we want to see, and today I want to dive into why guidance and balanced nutrition are so critical on this journey. Today we're continuing my series on self-sabotage in weight loss and we are focusing on perfectionism another word for this is all-or-nothing thinking. Perfectionism inhibits forward progress, and perfectionism is the enemy of consistency. When it comes to weight loss, trying to “get it right” may be holding you back in ways you haven't even realized. Here's what it can sound like: “Now's not a good time to start losing weight, I'm too busy, I have too much going on.” “I screwed up already today. I may as well just keep eating and start over tomorrow morning.” “This week has been a bust. I'll start over on Monday with a clean slate.” “There are too many celebrations in December, I'll start in January.” “There are too many vacations and social events over the summer, I'll start in September.” Can you see the theme here? Today is episode 2 of the self-sabotage in weight loss series. We are talking about COMPARISON. Comparison is something we all fall into at some point, right? Maybe you're scrolling through Instagram, seeing transformation photos, or hearing about how someone dropped 10 pounds in a month, and suddenly, you start feeling like you're doing something wrong. Sound familiar? Today we talk about why comparison is so harmful, especially when it comes to your weight loss efforts, and how you can shift your focus back to your personal journey. I see comparison show up in 2 forms: It's not fair (other people don't struggle) I'm not losing fast enough! (everyone else is losing faster) Remember that your journey is your own. No one else has your exact circumstances, your body, or your life. Focus on your own progress, even if it's slow. Progress is still progress, and it's unique to you. Another person's actions don't need to impact your choices. And likewise, someone else's progresses neither diminishes nor accelerates your own. What new medications are coming down the pipeline in Obesity Medicine? I explore the latest and greatest in obesity pharmacotherapy with my guest today, Dr. Sean Wharton. Dr. Wharton is one of the leading Canadian researchers in Obesity Medicine. He is co-lead author of the Canadian Obesity Guidelines and the primary author of many of the clinical trials in bariatric medicine and type 2 diabetes. Protein is the non-negotiable macro. Fat does not necessarily change according to your phase. It can be a manipulation of carbs or fat, one or the other. Really depends on taste, you will have an affinity for carbs or fat. Don't recommend going below 20% fat. Protein can stay the same but if anything increase when in a fat loss phase. Carbs produce insulin which is a building hormone, so they are great for energy and muscle building. Carbs aren't the bad guy, you have to use them strategically in how you manipulate them. They are for building so if you're lifting heavy they will help build muscle, if you are sedentary they will help build fat! A lot of vegans/vegetarians think the protein rule doesn't apply to them. Still the same requirements! Rule still applies! Vegans need a higher percentage of protein for fat loss than meat eaters because the types of protein are different. Plant-based, your body responds differently, most studies are done on animal proteins. Have to be careful because of the ratios of plant-based proteins. Example = beans are high in protein but they have quadruple the carbs! Make use of shakes, special meat replacement products and high protein breads. Pay attention to the ratios. The closer you can get the carbs/protein ratio to be equal, the better off you're going to be. Start with macros of a 40/30/30 split = 40% carbs, 30% protein, 30% fat. Vegan? Vegetarian? Intuitive eater? Shooting for 40/30/30 (c/p/f) macros and seem to always fall short? If your protein macros tends to land around 20-23% no matter what, you may wanna give this a try: Shoot for *equal* amounts of carb and protein at each meal. By trying to find a literal balance between the two, you'll find that you almost naturally land right at 40/30/30. This helps if you are vegetarian, vegan, or even an intuitive eater (or fellow carbaholic ;P ) that feels like your chosen style of eating simply will never lend to the balanced 40/30/30 recommendation. Using this technique, vegans/vegetarians can better understand how to select the foods that will best serve their fat loss macros. Focusing on trying to keep the carb/protein balance will bring more awareness to each meal, and further help those that strive to eat intuitively. It helps us stay away from the "bakery" mentality (coffee and a danish is not a "balanced" meal), and get back to well rounded eating habits (coffee, danish AND eggs/breakfast meat/milk, etc). If you're eating a high carb meal, try to add a carbless protein to it to round it out. Remember, it's not always about what needs to be removed. Look for ways to bring better balance to each meal, and in no time, you'll be nailing your macros with hardly any effort! Try it and let us know how it works for you!
