In this episode, LDF host Dan Wotherspoon shares something he delivered at the most recent Salt Lake City Sunstone Symposium. He spoke as part of a panel in a long-running Sunstone session titled, "Why I Stay." Instead of giving the "why" of his decision to stay actively involved in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and Mormon life, he spoke about "how" he manages it. Ultimately, it is because he has figured out the way to be himself at church and in other LDS gatherings. But it was a long and rocky journey from faith crash to rebuilding to confidence, which he shares in this episode. We hope you will listen!
Human beings are built for stories – and have been since the time of the greatest of all faith storytellers: Jesus. He told stories that were able to draw in diverse crowds with different points of view. In a similar way, every person's story – every witness – is the most important thing one can share with another person. Join hosts Mike Walsh and Jen Mauro on this week's episode of “Talking Catholic,” as Dr. Lee DelleMonache, diocesan director of religious education, and fan-favorite Donna Ottaviano-Britt, director of the Office of Discipleship and Leadership, discuss how every person has a “Why I Stay” story – and how sharing those tales can draw others into the Catholic Church. Plus, as a seasoned journalist, Jen offers up some advice on how to organize, write and tell those stories. Bust out your pens and paper! Have you ever felt alone in your faith journey, grappling with the notion that your personal story might just be an echo in the void? Lynzi, the creator of the "Why I Stay" podcast, joins us to challenge this, illuminating the significance of each narrative in reinforcing our spiritual connections during the most trying times. With a tapestry of voices from Latter-day Saints worldwide, she underscores the resilience and solidarity found in shared testimonies, especially poignant during the isolating waves of the 2020 pandemic. This episode is a tribute to the strength we draw from each other's stories, offering a sanctuary of hope where we discover we're not just walking beside one another, but also with the gospel of Jesus Christ.Navigating the stormy seas of doubt and uncertainty can make staying the course of faith feel like an uphill battle. Through candid discussions, we explore how the act of chronicling spiritual experiences serves as an anchor, preventing our beliefs from being swept away by tides of forgetfulness. Lynzi's personal revelations about the peaks and valleys of motivation in podcasting reflect a journey many of us know well, where rediscovering a sense of divine purpose can ignite the embers of a waning passion. Her testimony is a fervent reminder of the larger mission we partake in, resonating with anyone who's felt the push and pull of a calling amidst life's chaos.Concluding our session with Lynzi, we delve into the intimate dance of faith and adversity, where each step, whether firm or faltering, is part of a grander choreography orchestrated by Divine love. We share insights on visualizing the Savior as our constant support through every emotion, and the transformative potential of setting spiritual waypoints that guide us toward salvation and exaltation. Embracing Lynzi's journey, we invite you to join us in a celebration of divine guidance, recognizing that even in our trials, we are often lovingly carried by a higher power. Tune in for an episode that's more than just conversation—it's a beacon of light on the path to our divine potential.Follow Lynzi on Instagram @whyistaypodcastDon't forget to follow us for updates and more uplifting content@remember.podcast The Inspiration by Keys of Moon | https://soundcloud.com/keysofmoon Attribution 4.0 International (CC BY 4.0) https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/ Music promoted by https://www.chosic.com/free-music/all/
My friend Edward Leavitt (mid-30's, from Southern Utah, RM, Recently Out) joins us to bravely share his story. Edward talks about growing up in Southern Utah (from Gunlock) and his journey to figure out his sexual orientation after not being able to make things work with a woman following his mission. Edwards talks about dark days filled with shame, self-harm, suicidal ideation, and hating himself. Edward talks about his relationship with his Heavenly Father and Jesus and how that allowed him to accept himself and conclude that his is loved and his life is worth living and “choosing to stay.” Edwards also talks about helping things along the way that have him hope and support. Edward bravely talks about finding out he is HIV positive and how that news led him to come out to his family (via a text he reads on the podcast) and his families support (including a text Edwards reads from his Dad on the podcast). It is a powerful family love story of coming together to love and support each other. Edward talks about how his family relationships are central to his happiness and hope for his future. Edward also talks about HIV and reducing the stigma around it and how we can have people in our lives that are HIV positive. I learned much about HIV listening to Edward. Edward concludes with his relationship with his Heavenly Father and Jesus—and how he is glad he is gay—and is hope for the future and peace for today. Thank you, Edward, for being on the podcast. You are brave. Your story gives perspective, hope and insights for others. You are a good man. THROWBACK EPISODE FROM 2021!! "Choosing faith is something that has brought me a lot of peace. ... Ultimately, no matter how you look at the gospel, eventually you're going to have to get to the place of faith: whether you believe it or you don't." Lindsey relates that moving home to Tennessee for a few years and having discussions with her family helped her mature in the gospel, how learning about our theology encourages her to continue to explore the doctrine, and that the importance of "giving way" for the children has impressed her recently. Vanessa gives a look into following a prompting to start their family MUCH earlier than expected, and stepping into big role as co-founder of Chatbooks even though she was ready to have time to herself. "We're all human beings, and we all have thresholds of tolerance. And when we get pushed beyond those thresholds, we really have to learn how to turn things over to the Savior." Curt talks about his skiing accident at age 18, leaving him a T4 paraplegic and how it forced him to navigate life in a whole new way, that his patriarchal blessing is the anchor that helped him have hope for a future and a family after his accident, and how a few scriptures, (Matt 11:23, Alma 26:12, D&C 122:7) help him see that with the Lord, it doesn't matter what fierce winds come against us, if we know that we are nothing, but with the Lord we can do all things, we can hold on the way and "fear not." Annie talks about the courage to stand up to say she wouldn't play soccer on Sundays. She also talks about realizing she wasn't spiritually in the place she wanted to be, and the steps she took to make that right. Chayone tells how she referred HERSELF to the missionaries after learning about the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints through Family Search and the Book of Mormon, that being courageous in her discipleship is more difficult at work as she tries to not fall back into habits she got rid of when she became a member of the Church of Jesus Christ. "It doesn't shatter my testimony [when God gives us changes in the Church.] I feel grateful that God feels like He can trust us enough now that He can give us different guidance and direction." Raisa talks about following a small thought to reach out to her mom's old friend, and how that lead them to move to Texas, how moving to Mexico in high school gave her an opportunity to stand up for the Gospel of Jesus Christ and solidify her testimony, and that continuing revelation from a prophet of God and seeing her mom made whole again after the Resurrection are what excites her about this Gospel. "[After my mother's death] I came home, and I had to go to church by myself with my kids every week, and I thought, 'I just don't think I can do it. It's just too daunting.' I just told Heavenly Father, 'I can't do this by myself. You're going to have to help me.'" Thalia has experienced the heart-wrenching deaths of her mother and grandmother from cancer, and she shares her maturing process between those times, and how promptings from God helped her do what she needed to do, even when it was difficult. She shares about coming home after her mother's death, and that the grief and the "shutting down" made it very difficult to feel the spirit. Madison explains how a prompting in 2019 to write about Jesus while reading the standard works stabilized her during the year 2020, that she has learned that questions are an invitation from God to step out of fear and doubt and into knowing Him better and into a different kind of relationship with Him, and that her word for this year, "molded," helped her understand how Christ works with us in shaping us, Jeremiah 18:6 "Just as the clay is in the potter's hands, so are you in my hands." "'Heavenly Father, we've had her a year. Why would you take her from us?' and I felt the rebuke come, 'Well, would you rather I never sent her at all?' Every day we have with our loved ones is a gift." Dennis talks about how he learned to listen to the Spirit through saying "no" to an adoption opportunity he and his wife wanted so badly, and that finding out their one-year old baby they had prayed for had an aggressive cancer of the kidney, and that his love of the gospel is sparked by the fact that "even the least saint" can know all things, as soon as they are able to bear it." Keep believing in miracles and it will all work out like it's supposed to." What do you do when you find "tensions" in the gospel of Jesus Christ? Jorge tells us that he believes it takes courage to admit when he was wrong about some of his beliefs in the gospel, how having friends of different faiths has helped him become more comfortable talking about his own faith, and how discovering the inherent contradictions or "tensions" in the gospel excites him. "Living the gospel makes me happy. It brings me a lot of joy... Especially when I'm trying to do my best... there's this confidence in knowing that you're on the path that God wants you to be on. What does it take to bring us back to Christ? When have you had to be forgiven, and how did it feel? When has God made your burdens light? From facing alcoholism to becoming an active, worthy member again, Luke describes his journey and gives us insight into his life and his "coming to himself" moment. He talks about his love for forgiveness because he knows it so well, and it has now enabled him to become a worthy priesthood holder. How can we push past feeling inadequate uncertain to follow through on promptings? When has a dark time actually transformed you through Christ? When have you seen miracles and felt God's love in ways outside of the situation you were hoping would be resolved? Kim relates how a prompting to serve her ministering sister lead her to decide to be brave and push past feeling insignificant, how four years of post partum depression and Christ's grace helped her rebuild with her broken pieces, and how 2 Nephi 27:23 fills us with so much hope to know the God we worship is a God of miracles, and we should expect them. She talks about dealing with trigeminal neuralgia and how that has pushed her to see miracles that are outside of healing, even when she would pray and feel no relief of her symptoms or situation. Katrina talks about following promptings that didn't (seem) to come to anything and beginning to doubt her ability to hear the voice of the Lord, how she chooses each day to be grateful to be a mother, and that trusting in the Lord has brought peace to her life she hasn't felt anywhere else. What evidence can YOU see that the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints is Christ's Church? Bridger stands up for the Church of Jesus Christ by posting positive content on TikTok, explains the pivotal moment in his faith crisis where he considered all the "burdens of belief and unbelief," and that God continues to consecrate his decision to believe. "It's that realness that also powers the covenants I've made, and I can't go against them. And so I must stay, and I must be committed, and I must share this with other people, because I feel that it's real... and it produced things that I could not have produced on my own. That must have come from God." Do we see our opportunities to be like Christ? Does the Sacrament anchor you each week? How to you acknowledge that the covenants you've made with God are real and binding? Katie relates her experience being a lawyer and an advocate for people who are despised and looked down upon and what that teaches her about Christ, how repentance and the sacrament are anchors in her life, and that God will lead us along if we are meek and have trust in our Savior. Kate relates how serving in a branch as a young child helped mature her spiritually, that 2 Nephi 2:14 shows us that there are two types of creations in the world, things to act, and things to be acted upon, and we have AGENCY, to make choices and go on our path. She also loves the Plan of Salvation we have in this gospel, and living prophets, and that being a disciple means making choices now that help us invest in our futures. And that she need not be ashamed of this burden. However, she also felt, and still feels, that she should remain celibate. This puts her in a strange place of having to defend her choices and thoughts to both conservative and progressive people.Bridget's road has not been an easy one, but she has not hesitated to stay true to her calling of helping us all be more empathetic and loving.Find Bridget on Twitter or visit her site to learn more about her work.Help support this podcast by subscribing and leaving a 5 star review. In this episode, Latter-day Faith host Dan Wotherspoon reflects on the life of his wonderful friend, mentor, sounding board, and wise soul Curt Bench who passed away recently. In sharing about Curt and the pivotal role he played in Dan's life, his hope is that we each will take time to consider the people who have made a genuine difference in our lives, especially those who found joy in who we are and have helped us come to understand ourselves more deeply and perhaps point us toward our genuine spiritual gifts. Dan also reflects on the importance of finding more of those kinds of people in our lives. Sometimes they will fall into our orbit naturally, but we also shouldn't hesitate to actively try to develop friendships that might be transformative for us. In the final section of this episode, Dan reads an essay of Curt's that is found in the 2021 book, Why I Stay, volume 2 (Signature Books). In it you will get to meet Curt in his own words as he describes his journey within Mormonism and how he had found fulfillment there even amidst everything that is less than ideal. A part of that journey was his finding examples of others who inspired him in much the same was that Curt inspired Dan. This is a very personal episode. Thank you for allowing this indulgence.

He's also been the editor of Dialogue, former Chair of the Sunstone Foundation, and has published a wide variety of scholarly articles, personal essays, editorials, and poetry. Bob is the editor of a book series called Why I Stay, which compiles essays by some really remarkable Latter-day Saints; the latest edition, Why I Stay 2, which contains essays from Carol Lynn Pearson, Jennifer Finlayson-Fife, Phil Barlow, and others, was just released in April.Bob is also one of the founders of The Bountiful Children's Foundation, whose mission is to nurture the potential of infants and toddlers to lead healthy, productive, and self-reliant lives by eliminating malnutrition. We spoke with Bob about how we as Latter-day Saints can engage fully and faithfully with a world that's in need of imaginative and optimistic discipleship. He embodies that ideal so perfectly, and we came away so inspired by his energy and enthusiasm for making the Church and the world better places.
