I'm honored to have author, play writer, and speaker, Carol Lynn Pearson join me on the podcast this week! In this episode we cover her book "The Ghost of Eternal Polygamy." Polygamy has been practiced in the history of the LDS church, as well as in some cases of "eternal polygamy" in the LDS temple sealings which are still taught and practiced today, being acceptable for men. She shares how polygamy is practiced in our anticipation of what eternity has in store for us, inequality in sealing practices in the temple, and how leaders would be wise to confront the teachings of polygamy as being wrong, and not of God. We cover some of the history, the spiritual abuse that has stemmed from the idea of polygamy, and how the community would function better knowing that singular marriage is the only kind of marriage performed in the temple. We talk about turning patriarchy into partnership, searching for truth and examining all things, and how to move forward once you know what you know.  If you've listened to my podcast since the beginning, then you know that this podcast is not centered on my religion. But, I do choose to stand up for women when I see inequality or mistreatment. I believe this is a harmful teaching and  since many of my listeners live in Arizona and Utah, I hope that this episode will help heal some hearts and be an influence for change. You can buy this book on Amazon or Carol Lynn's website which I will link below.Amazon https://www.amazon.com/Ghost-Eternal-Polygamy-Haunting-Hearts/dp/0997458208Carollynnpearson.com http://carollynnpearson.com/ghostofeternalpolygamyFit, Healthy & Happy Podcast Welcome to the Fit, Healthy and Happy Podcast hosted by Josh and Kyle from Colossus...Listen on: Apple Podcasts Spotify

Following last week's deep dive into the talk “To the Mothers in Zion”, you are likely struck by the need to better understand the fraught roll of women in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints in the 20th and 21st century.   However, the struggle to understand the unequal status of women is not just an LDS in nature.  It is MUCH bigger than that.  And it is deeply connected to the loss of our collective knowledge of the feminine divine.    This is what this week's Latter Day Struggles episodes plans to explore.   And who better to take us on this journey than own beloved poet laureate, author, and feminist extraordinaire—Carol Lynn Pearson.   The specific topic of this two-episode series is Carol Lynn's one-woman play titled “Mother Wove the Morning”.   In Carol Lynn's typically beautiful and dramatic way, we learn all about women throughout the ages their ongoing search for the divine face of God.   Monday's episode offers context to the creation of this play—her personal experiences that led up to the realization of this idea, where, how, when it was performed and how it was received.   She shares her experience deciding to address the feminine divine in an era where feminist and heavenly mother scholarship was under the critical scrutiny from the leadership of the church and how she decided to answer the call notwithstanding the risks.   In Friday's episode Carol Lynn will delight us all with an overview of the cast of characters whom she selected to perform through her and actually performs a portion of the play for us all to enjoy!   If you loved the little portion that you heard on the podcast, don't hesitate to go to her website carollynnpearson.com and buy the entire play and the book that goes with it.  It is time for a resurrection of this amazing one-woman play in the ongoing celebration of the feminine face of God with whom so many of us are finding deep connection.   ————————————————————————————————————————————- All Friday episodes of Latter Day Struggles can be accessed through a paid subscription ($9.99/month) by following this link.  Thank you for supporting Valerie's professional commitment to your LDS Faith expansion journey. We were so pleased and lucky to be able to discuss it with the author herself and get her stories and background. We encourage everyone to read this book for themselves either to understand the pain of others or to feel validation for their own experiences and release the ghost from their psyches. In the first book, Carol Lynn talks about loving and supporting her husband Gerald who died of AIDS in 1984. In the second book, Carol Lynn shares stories of LGBTQ Latter-day Saints. I read both books many years ago which were key for me to learn how to better support my LGBTQ friends. Carol Lynn also talks about the other three important books. Perhaps the more challenging question she answers is how she navigates feeling congruent with herself as a contributing and lifelong member in a religious institution that struggles so much with issues of gender, patriarchy, control, and power.  One of the MANY nuggets of wisdom that she sharesis a plea for all of us to "BE BRAVE.  AND BE KIND."  She embodies both bravery and kindness in her entire life and legacy and invites us to do the same in our open, honest, struggle with the institution that is our home.  She also says, "If there is trouble in the family, we have the right to talk about it.  It is our home and our family."  God bless Carol Lynn.  Enjoy this episode!  Here are some of the books that most influenced Carol Lynn throughout her life: The Chalice and the Blade by Riane Eisler, The Creation of Patriarchy by Gerda Lerner, Goddesses: Mysteries of the Feminine Divine by Joseph Campbell, The New Earth by Eckhart Tolle, A Course in Miracles by The Foundation for Inner Peace. In this first of two delightful and powerful interviews about her commitment to compassionate and Christlike advocacy for the marginalized, Carol Lynn Pearson said,  "maybe the worst thing that could have happened for the Brethren of the Mormon church was the moment I was given the role to play "Joan of Arc" in a theatrical production at BYU 60+ years ago!" The rest was history.  And luckily for us, our own Mormon "Joan of Arc" has not been burned at the stake (center) thus far!! And in this series, she does not disappoint.  In this episode with Valerie, Carol Lynn opens up about her childhood, life with Gerald, her own process of becoming the beautiful combination of bravery, grace, and straight-talking badassery that defines her work to this day. Today we're going to confront some of the really hard things about being a woman in the LDS faith tradition and we're also going to highlight some of the beauty and the goodness and the moral rightness that is found there in the Church. To demonstrate one aspect of the many complicated factors of what it felt like to be a Mormon, here's a scene for my house when I was little: In the 1980s, my family drove a huge blue Suburban. My younger siblings and I would listen to cassette tapes in the Suburban on road trips and we would listen to the same things over and over and over again. One of the classics was a musical that was called My Turn on Earth. It came out in 1986 and it was about a girl who live with God and with the whole human family before being born in a human body on earth. What I got from that is that my soul could have come down to earth anywhere. I could have been born into a body of a rich aristocratic family and friends. I could have been born in a slum in Brazil. I could have been born into a Muslim family in Egypt or a Buddhist family in Thailand, and so my whole life, anyone I see anywhere, I have an awareness that that person could just as easily have been me. Every single person that I meet was at that big family meeting before humans came to earth, so we are all siblings even if we don't remember each other. This way of viewing other people is at the core of who I am and today I am so honored and so excited that on today's episode I'm joined by the author of My Turn on Earth, Carol Lynn Pearson.Carol Lynn Pearson (she/her) has been a professional writer, speaker and performer for many years. Several of her poems have been widely reprinted in such places as the Ann Landers column and Chicken Soup for the Soul as well as college literary textbooks. Her autobiography, Goodbye, I Love You, tells the story of her marriage to a homosexual man, their divorce, ongoing friendship, and her caring for him as he died of AIDS. This story made her a guest on such programs as "The Oprah Winfrey Show" and "Good Morning, America," and she has been featured in People magazine. Pearson has written numerous plays, books, and educational motion pictures. Pearson holds a master's degree in theatre, is the mother of four grown children, and lives in Walnut Creek, Calif.

Carol Lynn Pearson is a Mormon icon. In the early 1960's two monumental experiences happened in her life: she married Gerald, a gay man—and she published her first book. From that first publishing—and her relationship with her gay husband—Carol Lynn Pearson forged a path forward for Latter-day Saints to better understand the LGBTQ experience. Her life has been a lesson of love, compassion, understanding and advocacy. Escaping the gazing eyes of Utah Mormons, the Pearson's left Salt Lake City and settled in California to allow their little family the opportunity to embrace the unknown and to grow in uncertainty. Through her best-selling book, “Goodbye, I Love You”, Carol Lynn allowed the world too peer into the Pearson family story. For the first time a well known Latter-day Saint family was openly talking about homosexuality, mixed orientation marriage, kindness, advocacy, harmful doctrine and more. In this episode Carol Lynn sits down with Kyle to dive deeper into that journey, discuss the impact it had on Mormonism, and how marrying a gay man changed her life. #LatterGayStories #CarolLynnPearson #Family #Love #ChurchOfJesusChristofLatterDaySaints

In this episode, LDF host Dan Wotherspoon is joined by the wonderful, gifted, powerful author Carol Lynn Pearson to talk about her most recent book and the ideas that underlie it. The book, The Love Map: Saving Your Love Relationship and Incidentally Saving the World, is the flowering of a more-than-forty-year interest that Carol Lynn has had in the deep energies of the soul and universe that are at play in both societies and individual human lives. In this book, she focuses on the chakra system, which outlines seven energy centers in our bodies, each with its own different but vital contribution to our well-being, both physically and spiritually. Carol Lynn uses the metaphor of "kingdoms" in speaking about the contributions of (and potential dangers inherent in) each chakra, but focuses on the fourth kingdom, the "heart" chakra, as the most important for our love relationships. But learning to live and flourish in this kingdom only comes after all sorts of inner wrestles, especially with ego and the dangerous (and wonderful) energy of the third kingdom in which "power" is preeminent. Through compelling narrative and first-person voice, The Love Map, traces the journey of human history as Carol Lynn describes the type of energy that is ascendent in different chronological epochs, as well as through developments in the life of Joanna, a young woman, the narrator, whose three-year marriage is nearing collapse. The book is a depiction of Joanna's hero's journey. The book's voice and prose allows us to understand ourselves and human development writ large through dramatic encounters with each energy in a way that isn't accessible through more academic approaches. We "experience" our lives in these kingdoms, and we are grateful to Carol Lynn for teaching us of these kingdoms through story, which includes humor, heartaches, and faced fears. You don't want to miss this book! Nor this conversation!

In this episode, we got to speak with Carol Lynn Pearson about her new book, The Love Map: Saving Your Love Relationship and Incidentally Saving the World.Carol Lynn has been a powerful and well-known voice in the Latter-day Saint community for many years. She's the author of several remarkable works, including the memoir Goodbye, I Love You, and the book of poetry Finding Mother God: Poems to Heal the World. Her full catalog of works is too impressive to list here, but one other highlight is that she wrote one of our very favorite primary songs: I'll Walk with You, which was published as a children's book in 2020.Carol Lynn will also be speaking with us at Restore, our upcoming gathering in Salt Lake City.Carol Lynn's new book is a remarkable work of fiction, that, as Carol Lynn says, is also true. It's the story of a young woman whose fraught relationship with her husband is reaching a breaking point just as she suffers traumatic injuries in a terrorist attack. But a vision she experiences while recovering gives her something remarkable and unexpected — a “map” that will serve as a guide to healing her most intimate relationship, and allow her to see each person in her life as God does.Though the book is intended for an audience much wider than just Latter-day Saints, its message resonated deeply with us, and Carol Lynn's hard-won wisdom and remarkable gifts an artist were abundantly apparent throughout the book. We'd strongly encourage anyone hoping for healing in their relationships to pick it up — we really think you won't regret it. You can find the book available on Amazon now.We want to extend a sincere thanks to Carol Lynn for coming on, and we hope you enjoy this conversation as much as we did.

Amy: Welcome to Breaking Down Patriarchy! I'm Amy McPhie Allebest. Today we will be discussing Peggy Orenstein's Girls and Sex. I consider this book essential reading for anyone who is a girl or loves a girl, but I'm including it in this podcast on patriarchy because in our historical timeline, it contributes meaningfully to a conversation that we started in the very first episodes. Remember that for millennia, men thought of women's bodies as their possessions, and their reproductive capacity was considered a commodity. Up until about 100 years ago women were still considered to be “owned” by their husbands under the laws of coverture, and marital rape was outlawed only in 1993, a vestige of the belief that a man owned his wife's body and was his, to do whatever he wanted with it. Then in 1931 Virginia Woolf said that the one thing women couldn't write about was sex (even though men could), and in many ways that is still true today. Our Bodies, Ourselves paved new paths in the 1970's, but we are still figuring out girls' and women's bodies and sexuality in the context of always having been overseen and monitored and controlled by men. I think it's important to remember that historical context as we consider this book as it relates to patriarchy.  Also, obviously, given the title of the book, this episode is about sex, so please be advised of the subject matter, which we are (on purpose) going to discuss very openly. And I am very  excited to discuss this book with my reading partner, Natasha Helfer! Thanks for being here, Natasha! Natasha: (Response) Amy: Natasha Helfer and I met in Northern California a few years ago at a lunch for progressive Mormons - I was seated next to Carol Lynn Pearson, who is a hero of mine, and I was in heaven because whenever I turned to my left I got to talk with her, and whenever I turned to my right, Natasha I heard you and my husband Erik talking about sex shame in conservative religions, which is something I think about a lot so I felt torn at that lunch! I knew who you were and admired you so much - I had heard you speak on sexuality on several podcast episodes and was such a huge fan of your work. And I still am! So I can't wait to hear what you have to say about this book, but before we jump in, I'm wondering if you can tell us a little bit about who you are. Where you come from and what makes you you.  Natasha: Bio Amy: Awesome. And I also like to ask my reading partners what interested them in participating in Breaking Down Patriarchy. Do you have a thought or two on that? Natasha: Thoughts on this topic Amy: Thanks so much. Our last step before we start discussing the book is to learn just a little bit about the author, Peggy Orenstein. I'll read just a bit about her and what led her to write this text.  Peggy Orenstein  was born in 1961 in Minneapolis, Minnesota. She earned her bachelor's degree from Oberlin College in 1983, and began her career in New York City, as an Associate Editor at Esquire Magazine. She subsequently served as editor of multiple other publications before moving to San Francisco to become Managing Editor of Mother Jones. She left that post to write full time in 1991. Orenstein lives in the San Francisco Bay Area with her husband and their daughter. She is the author of many books, including Cinderella Ate My Daughter, Girls and Sex, which we will be discussing today, and her newest book, Boys and Sex, which I will be reading soon as well. Orenstein has been a contributing writer for The New York Times Magazine and AFAR, and has also written for the Los Angeles Times, The Washington Post, The New York Times, The Atlantic, and The New Yorker, and has contributed commentaries to NPR's All Things Considered. She has been featured on many television shows and on NPR's Fresh Air and The PBS News Hour, and her TED talk, “What Young Women Believe about their own sexual pleasure,” has been viewed over...

We know that in the Bible, many prophets practiced polygamy.  However, modern Christians and Jews mostly condemn the practice.  What are Joseph's theological justifications for polygamy?  Dr. Brian Hales tells us, The easiest one is part of the restitution of all things, and if somebody asks you, “Why did Joseph do it?”  The easy answer is, he was a prophet-restorer, and the old prophets did it, and he restored it.  That's not entirely nuanced, and some would say it's even correct.  I think it is generally. The second one is it was a trial.  This is the one I couldn't remember.  It presented a special trial.  The Lord does do that.  It gives different people at different times different kinds of trials. A third one was to—it was the one I had talked a great deal about.  It allowed all men and women to enter into a marriage, even if this is a plural wife, and then the [fourth] one is the one we started with, multiply and replenish the earth. We'll also talk about what Brian thinks of Carol Lynn Pearson's book, The Ghost of Eternal Polygamy. Of course on earth, polygamy is not fair.  It's unequal.  You could say it's sexist if you want, on earth.  But I don't think that we know anything about eternal marriage, and we certainly don't know anything about eternal plural marriage.  So to assume that that's a bad thing, that it victimizes women, and to assume that women should fear that is to fear unknown things.  God has promised us everlasting joy, a fullness of joy.  His plan is a plan of happiness. Check out our previous episode on Fanny Alger, as well as parts 1, 2, 3. Many of you will find Mark Staker's interview on Kirtland polygamy  enlightening too.  Don't forget to check out a transcript (link below), or the video! https://youtu.be/HXVAFCDxVRQ   https://gospeltangents.com/shop/transcripts/theological-justifications-polygamy/
