Miki and I take you on a hunting adventure to South Africa in this episode. Just over a year ago, we bid on a trip to Africa at the Wild Sheep Society of BC's conservation fundraiser auction. A year later, we were welcomed by the Bosveld Jacobs Safari team on the other side of the world. Travelling away from home to hunt has been a foreign concept for me. Hunting in a place without connection to the place, the people, and the animals raises many questions about how this can fit together and align with our hunting ethic. Miki and I spent the months leading up and the days on the hunt processing these questions.  And now we have answers! We are excited to share what we learned from the mind-blowing experiences of this Adventure.  While on the hunt, I interviewed Drian Laas, the professional hunter who guides and facilitates the hunting experience. I caught up with Riaan Jacobs, owner of the Boshveld Jocobs Safaris, who donated the hunt to the fundraiser at this year's Wild Sheep Society of BC fundraiser in Penticton. I hope you enjoy this podcast as we dive into the complexities of hunting in a foreign country, touching on the ethics of sport versus sustenance, strategies used in guided hunts, and the emotional highs and lows that come with the experience. I am excited about returning to Africa and will plan a trip in the next few years. I will be organizing a trip for folks who are part of the EatWild community.  If you are curious about Africa or may want to join our Adventure, please reach out!  If you listen to this podcast ahead of April 7th, there is still time for you to join Spike Camp and enter for a chance to win a trip to Africa.  I want to thank Bosveld Jacobs Safaris for the generous donations to help fund wild sheep conservation in BC, and for taking such good care of Miki and me and truly facilitating a trip of a lifetime. Recently the Province of British Columbia released their proposed 2024-2026 Hunting and Trapping Regulations on the Angling, Hunting and Trapping Engagement (AHTE) website. This is an opportunity for you to comment on the proposed changes and we encourage you to do so.The Society has provided a brief explainer on a few of these proposals for your consideration. They can be viewed at: www.wildsheepsociety.com/proposed-changes-to-2024-2026-hunting-and-trapping-regulations/ The Society has reviewed these changes and has concerns around several of the proposals. Overall, there are several recommendations that are intended to reduce hunter density on the landscape with no evidence it will benefit wildlife. This was noted and referenced on several proposals, and it lacks the scientific data to support this. In fact, in some of the rationale the government states that they lack adequate data and are moving to a Limited Entry Hunt as a management strategy. The Society feels that there is too little rationale for many of these decisions and a lack of ingenuity to find solutions that may preclude Limited Entry Hunting and have greater benefit for the issues identified. We encourage you to review the proposals and complete the engagement on the following site: www2.gov.bc.ca/gov/content/sports-culture/recreation/fishing-hunting/ahte/hunting-trapping. Your feedback will be a factor in the decision-making process on the outcome of these proposals. The deadline for comment is March 22, 2024, so be sure to comment in a timely manner. We cannot emphasize enough the importance of submitting your comments.Talk is Sheep is brought to you by our Title Sponsor, MTNTOUGH Fitness Labs.We partnered with MTNTOUGH Fitness Lab to help get you in shape and mentally stronger. Jen sits down with Peter at Sheep Week in Reno. Jen made her second appearance as a donor during the Sheep Show and 2024 hit it out of the park fetching $40,000 USD. She is know for her metal work and particular as a welder. Her “Going home heavy” art depicts a step back in time of a view known and loved by all sheep hunters. An original wooden pack adorned with a ram skull artistically welded out of pure metal. The life-sized sculpture poetically captures the weight one carries when “going home heavy” feels like you are carrying a pack full of iron. This solid piece is one of a kind never to be duplicated and can be displayed free standing or hanging on the wall in one's trophy room or office. The originality of the work and design is sure to capture the attention of hunters and art collectors alike as it is Jennifer's first instalment of the metal sheep slam - this time featuring a bighorn ram.Check out Jen's work at @officialjenphillips.Talk is Sheep is brought to you by our Title Sponsor, MTNTOUGH Fitness Labs.We partnered with MTNTOUGH Fitness Lab to help get you in shape and mentally stronger. On this episode of Wild & Uncut, we join you from SCI's 51st convention in Nashville, TN! Kristy Titus sits down with Dan Brooks, Rachel Ahtila & Madie Demaske.  Dan joined Safari Club International Foundation (SCIF) in 2015 and has over thirty years' experience in wildlife conservation and education. He was initially hired by SCIF as a Program Specialist for the Humanitarian Service programs. Dan was promoted in 2016 to the Business Operations Manager to administer the International Wildlife Museum in Tucson, Arizona and continued to manage the Humanitarian Service Programs for SCIF.  He was appointed to the Director of Education for SCIF in 2017.  Born and raised in Kelowna, British Columbia, Rachel Ahtila was a “horse-crazy bush kid,” who forged a winding path to becoming one of the most well-known women in hunting. Although she wasn't raised in a hunting community, her parents gave her a loose rein at the wise old age of 11. She then began traveling north for the summers to chase horses at a remote hunting lodge in the mountain valleys of the Muskwa-Kechika. A full-time guide, Rachel is also a public speaker and published writer. In 2013, she was a Prois Award Recipient, and was nominated as the youngest woman to be on the Board of Directors for the Wild Sheep Society of British Columbia in 2014. Madeline was born and raised in the foothills of the Colorado Rocky Mountains. Her passion for hunting and the outdoors developed at a young age and has become a driving factor in her legal career. Madeline's love for the mountains took her to Montana State University where she received undergraduate honors degrees in Agriculture Business and Applied Economics. Madeline continued her education at the University of Kansas where she graduated with a Juris Doctor in May 2021 and became a licensed attorney in the state of Colorado soon after. Since, she has been dedicating her time to the mass denial of Tajikistan Marco Polo Argali import permits, as she has a ram stuck overseas herself. As an avid hunter and conservationist, Madeline offers a unique perspective to wildlife and hunting-related legal issues. She is currently part of SCI's team of staff attorneys as Litigation Associate. We hope you enjoy this episode, as much as we appreciate your support! Make sure to LIKE and SUBSCRIBE to make sure you catch every bit of Wild & Uncut!
