Time to throw ourselves around. We're covering Punk Goes Horror.   The anthology of stories inspired by punk and alternative rock songs came out just a few weeks back. It brings together a mosh-pit full of authors, both new and established, to transmute their favourite songs into nasty little stories.   I invited the anthology editor, William Sterling, and two of his contributors, Wendy Dalrymple and Brian McCauley, to talk about punk, and horror and the affinity between the two.   We get into our favourite ever gig experiences, the creepy assumptions behind certain emo-songs, and why punk (and music generally) is such an important light in dark times.   Enjoy!   Other books mentioned:   Rebel Girl: My Life as a Feminist Punk (2024), by Kathleen Hanna Victorian Psycho (2025), by Virginia Feito Blood on her Tongue (2025), by Johanna van Veen Credenza (2025), by Wendy Dalrymple Breathe in, Bleed Out (2025), by Brian McCauley Poisoned Soup for the Macabre, Depraved and Insane: An Anthology of Nostalgic Terrors (2025), edited by Wendy Dalrymple and Grace R. Preorder Special Backstage Package from TrubornPreorder the regular edition from TrubornPunk is horror. Horror is punk.Though there seems to be a particular empathy between punk music and horror, the concern could be, if you were to collect a bunch of horror stories themed to punk rock songs, wouldn't they all just be the same thing - more or less? Not when William Sterling and his band of scribes get together, because one of my favorite things about this anthology is how unique of an approach each author took to the assignment. A particular standout is Liz Kerin's story Down By the Water (inspired by the PJ Harvey song?) In which a girl rebels against her controlling parent - which seems pretty foundational punk - only the whole story seems set on some fairy tale seaside community with witches and sea monsters (maybe). Such a creative approach to the theme of the book! There are fourteen more songs beside, and I'll let you discover them on your own. Suffice to say, I really enjoyed the book, and loved to have William Sterling and Brian McAuley on to give some insight into the book's inception through it's upcoming release.I'll plug once more ordering from one of the above links directly from Truborn. In times like these, creative folk need all the direct support they can get. If you order the Backstage Package, I think you even get a backstage pass! For the YouTuberly folks: This is a public episode. So many podcasts!I thought I could make one podcast episode where I talked to some folks who podcast about horror, and it would be a one-stop-shop for folks looking for a new favorite commute time killer (hmm. commute-time killer? commute time-killer?)Well, as is often the case, it wasn't until I was in the middle of it that I realized two things:* There are so many podcasts talking about horror books.* Podcasters love to talk - so my 15-20 minute target often ended up going way longer than that.* (I know I said two, but heck this deserves a bullet) There's a ton of podcasts where the only topic is Stephen King and his books.Episode OneClick above to check out the first episode, if you haven't already. I think we can all agree on that one, right? So of course these creepy dolls would find themselves into the pages of William Sterling's soon-to-be-released book, “String Them Up,” out on Sept. 22 through Crystal Lake Publishing.   In this interview, William takes us through the town of Hollow Hills, which is plagued by a series of brutal murders. We meet the toymaker, once a beloved member of the community, now the prime suspect in the killings. William talks about Sinclair Redman, a man with a dark and haunted past who must unearth the truth behind the killings as the bodies continue to pile up.   William talks about the concept of toys in horror and why it appealed to him for his new book. We look at his first time working with a publisher and his own strengths and weaknesses when it comes to promoting his work. Plus, there's a great giveaway for those that pre-order the book!

This is a story of an unsolved death of 4 men in Yuba county. One of them is still missing and very likely the police will never find him. Today’s episode was the story of Jack Huett, William Sterling, Jack Madruga, Theodore Weiher, and Gary Mathias. The men were part of a basketball team that was going to play the Special Olympics. The release the tension, they attended a basketball game, but never came back home…The unsolved death of the men will be in history forever. The event of 1978 is still unsolved…In this episode I dove deep into 5 segments of this sad story: background information, the disappearance, the investigation, the appearance of the bodies + evidence, and the theory on the murder. In conclusion, it is to believe that one of the men died, and they all decided to leave the place without leaving traces that they have been there. However, everything went south and they ended up dead of missing forever (very likely, dead). This video is sponsored by PodDecks: Use Code TCNS for 10% off. https://powered-by-pod-decks.peachs.co/a/lawrence-leaseFollow us on Twitter: www.twitter.com/truecrimensLike Us on Facebook: www.facebook.com/truecrimeneversleepspodcastSupport Us By Buying Us a Coffee: www.buymeacoffee.com/tcnsSOURCEShttps://www.reddit.com/r/UnresolvedMysteries/comments/6ni625/the_american_dyatlov_pass_five_young_men_abandon/https://www.sacbee.com/news/local/crime/article226544615.htmlhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qWT3FxsEexI

In February of 1978, an unsolved incident occurred to five young men from Yuba County that is still being investigated by the area police today. The five men are known collectively as the Yuba County Five, and the incident itself is referred to as the American Dyatlov Pass. On February 24, 1978, Gary Mathias, Jack Huett, William Sterling, Ted Weiher and Jack Madruga left a college basketball game at 10 PM with the intention of driving home to get ready for their own league basketball game the next day. Unfortunately, none of the men arrived at their destination. The car they were driving was found two days after a search was launched, but because of a winter storm hitting the area shortly after, the authorities had to postpone the search. On June 4, 1978, a group of motorcyclists happened upon a ranger cabin that was about twenty miles from the abandoned car, where they discovered the emaciated body of Ted Weiher. The remains of 3 of the other men were discovered shortly after in the surrounding area, but the body of Gary Mathias was never found. There are a lot of questions and very few answers surrounding the strange and mysterious disappearance and deaths of these young men. What made them drive on a road far off from the route they should've taken? Why would they exit a perfectly working car and walk through the snow and woods to nowhere?
