Patrick Nickleson is the author of The Names of Minimalism: Authorship, Art, Music, and Historiography in Dispute, an academic study that radically reconsiders the origins and boundaries of musical minimalism. Uninterested in searching for the earliest work of musical minimalism, or even in doing the admittedly necessary work of expanding the canon to include lesser known but equally important figures, Nickleson instead underscores a different set of shared traits that he sees in (early) minimalism: the importance of collective authorship, often collaborating in a form of “bandness”; the priority of recording to tape over written scores; and distinguishing between “(early) minimalism” and the later canonization of Minimalism as we know it since the early 1980s. In addition to the book, we discuss searching for obscure records online, our shared love of Constellation Records, and the influence of Tony Conrad. Kay Howl first landed on our radar as the driving force behind the South Western Ontario duo The Oh Chays, who also featured Mike Sugar Authier on guitar, percussion and backing vocals. Known for their upbeat and fun songs, powerful vocals and playful stage banter, the duo were finalists in the 2014 Toronto Blues Society Talent Search and represented Toronto Blues Society at the International Blues Challenge in Memphis in 2015. The Oh Chays may be no more, but the dynamic vocal delivery and fun stage presence lives on as Kay Howl who released her debut album "Pink Trees" earlier this year. "Pink Trees", which was produced with Marty Bak at SLR studios in Windsor ON is a personal and powerful statement - a coming out record, and very much a 'this is who I am' recording. Featuring 11 tracks, it packs quite a punch, and a recording that Kay feels is best appreciated in full album format. Music: Kay Howl "Whatever", "High On A Woman", "Natural Disaster" and "It Must Have Been Love" (Roxette cover) from "Pink Trees" (2021, Self) CDN. This episode features Cam Wells, host of the radio show "Handi-Link", a show that covers disability stories. The show is usually recorded at CJAM-FM in Windsor ON, and Cam has recently returned to the airwaves, after having set up a home recording studio. We talk about some of the newest interviews he's been hosting, and about the unique experiences of disabled folks in the times of a Global Pandemic. We talk about the people who access and depend on ODSP for support - in many cases, quarantining has added additional expenses for folks on ODSP. Plus, a lot of folks on ODSP work part-time jobs to help subsidize their living expenses, and by extension are amongst the thousands of people who have taken a financial hit by loss of employment during COVID. So there are added costs, and reduced income...but folks on ODSP are not eligible for CERB. ODSP pays roughly $750-$1500 a month to an individual living with a disability. CERB is currently paying $2000 a month. But in order to access the emergency relief benefit and temporarily receive a higher amount of money, a person would have to cancel their ODSP, and risk not being able to access it again. There is a lot to be inspired by, talking to Cam, and hearing stories of perseverance amongst the folks he's interviewing. But it is clear, on a federal and provincial level, that folks are being left behind and financial support still has a long way to go. Check out “Handi-Link” at http://www.cjam.ca/supercali/show_event.php?id=96This interview was originally recorded on May 14th 2020Added note post interview: new information has been found since this interview, and it sounds like (thankfully) folks on ODSP will not necessarily lose their benefits by applying for CERB, but that there will be a correction/adjustment when CERB stops being given out. This is how it was explained to me by Cam: “According to Ken Pope an ODSP expert attorney, what happens is those on ODSP are obliged to apply for CERB - which is a greater amount than ODSP - which ill produce a long term offset once ODSP is back to normal as calculations will indicate there was an overpayment in the form of CERB. There is a lot of misinformation out there but it appears as though it won't cause long term loss, just a shift in amounts” Get on the email list at bridgingthesocialdistance.substack.com

We’re bringing something a little different to you on Folk Roots Radio this week. We’re celebrating the music of Kevin K Gagnon, a bass player from Windsor ON who has been active on the local scene since 1978. When I received the press release about "It Is What It Is", Kevin's first solo album - released after 40 years in the music business, I knew I had to bring him into the studio for an in-depth conversation. During his career, Kevin K Gagnon has pretty much played every bar, club and concert venue throughout the Windsor/Essex area, and recorded in just about every local studio. “It Is What It Is” is a collection of mostly instrumental works, written for electric guitar as well as bass - Kevin plays both on the album. Back in the 80s, Kevin toured with his band “Destiny”, and he has played with Joe Konas (The Gods), the late Windsor blues great Michael Bruce and many others. He has also offered his talents for countless local charity events over the years and currently performs live with local Windsor band, The Formula. It Is What It Is includes the recently recorded “A Blues Memory”, in memory of Michael Bruce, and a brand new song entitled “One Or The Other” featuring guitarist/vocalist Jeff Oppen. Kevin Gagnon is a recipient of The Windsor/Essex County Music Appreciation Award and a Hall of Fame inductee. Music: Kevin K Gagnon “A Blues Memory”, “Minstrel Cramp”, “Today and Forever”, “One Or The Other” and “A Walk In The Park” from “It Is What It Is” (2019, Self).

There’s nothing better than having a new album come in, you play it once, and then want to play it again... and again... and again. Canadian Americana/folk singer-songwriter Tia McGraff has just released a fabulous seventh album, "Stubborn In My Blood". The new album is her most personal album to date, and features 11 thoughtful and reflective songs - most written with her partner Tommy Parham alongside co-writes with Wood Newton, Pete Riley, Henry Priestman and Devon O'Day and a cover of the classic "One Tin Soldier". It's an album that's clearly intended to move and inspire her growing worldwide audience. With some great musicianship and support from some of the industry's top players, powerful lyrics and strong vocals, and an album cover that features Tia in boxing gloves, its clear that this time around, she's not holding anything back! As well as the new album, Tia is now also a published author having released a children's book, "Jake The Road Dawg", based on her dog Jake's adventures on the road with a couple of crazy touring musicians. Tia will be appearing at the Fred Eaglesmith Charity Picnic in Aylmer on August 18 and at MacKenzie Hall in Windsor ON on Friday August 24 before heading to the UK for a September tour. We caught up with Tia at home in Port Rowan ON to chat about the new project. For more information about the album and upcoming tour dates, visit http://tiamcgraff.com. Music: Tia McGraff "Pilot Of Change", "Let 'em See Your Strong", "Travelin' By Guitar" and "Stubborn In The Blood" from "Stubborn In The Blood" (2018, Bandana Records).
