In this episode of Uncommon Sense with Ginny Robinson, I'm giving my take (to the best of my ability—because I'm not a tariff expert and neither are most of the people chiming in right now) on Trump's gutsy new tariff move. It's the one that's got half the country cheering and the other half clutching their pearls. While the media yells “economic suicide,” I'm here to suggest that this strategy might actually work—but not overnight. We'll talk about the possibility of long-term gain, the reality of short-term discomfort, and the cultural obsession with instant results when what's often required is patience. I will also go over our collective short attention spans and why longer attention spans are needed for understanding complex issues like this. Every answer won't fit in a 15 second soundbite. At the end of the day, we'll have to pray, wait, and see. Some of the smartest plays take time to unfold.—https://noblegoldinvestments.com/learn/gold-and-silver-guide/?utm_campaign=21243613394&utm_source=g&utm_medium=cpc&utm_content=&utm_term=noble%20gold&seg_aprod=&ad_id=698073353663&oid=2&affid=1&utm_source=google&affiliate_source=googleads_brand_bmbc&utm_term=noble%20gold&gad_source=1&gbraid=0AAAAADQ2DzJSJ_mi5cJo8dO2FNUs7uNy-&gclid=CjwKCAjwktO_BhBrEiwAV70jXtjSCyioSM2Hz1McTAlR3f8t3KCDDN3-XBWLaIzwJmiEGe0ztxIk5RoCnM0QAvD_BwE

In this episode of "Nurturing Financial Freedom," we discuss the surprising market volatility that occurred in early August 2024 and explore what investors should take away from these events. But first, we actually met in person last month - for the first time after working together for over five years! The market's volatility in August was triggered primarily by two factors: weaker-than-expected economic reports and high market valuations. The Institute for Supply Management's report on business indicated declining confidence in the manufacturing sector, which, alongside a disappointing non-farm payroll report, caused investors to worry that the economy might be slowing too quickly in its fight against inflation. This led to a significant market pullback, particularly in the Dow Jones Industrial Average, which dropped 2,000 points over a few days. But even in the time between writing this episode and recording it, market volatility has calmed.Alex and Ed emphasize that while these reports sparked concern, the broader economic context remains positive. They remind listeners that market fluctuations are normal, and short-term downturns don't necessarily signal long-term issues. The key takeaway is the importance of maintaining a balanced and diversified portfolio to withstand such volatility. They also highlight the Federal Reserve's potential role in stabilizing the economy, noting that if a significant slowdown occurs, the Fed has the ability to cut interest rates to stimulate growth. It's possible we see this after their next meeting in September.Predicting short-term market movements is extremely difficult, akin to forecasting the weather. Instead, the focus should be on long-term strategies and maintaining perspective during turbulent times. Ed advises against panicking during market volatility, stressing the importance of staying the course with a well-diversified investment plan. In this week's episode, the Money Wise guys provide a positive update on the recent performance of major stock indices, with the Dow Jones Industrial Average up by 491 points or 1.2%, the S&P 500 increasing by 81 points or 1.5%, and the NASDAQ rising by 345 points or 2.1%. Year-to-date figures show substantial gains, with both the S&P 500 and NASDAQ up by 11.2%. They also delve into recent economic reports that have influenced market sentiment, particularly the Consumer Price Index (CPI) and Producer Price Index (PPI). The CPI for the month was reported to increase by 0.3%, which was below the expected 0.4%, signaling a slight cooling of inflation, a positive signal for the markets. This was further supported by a downward revision in the previous month's PPI, which also had a calming effect on the market's inflation concerns. These developments contributed to all three major indices reaching all-time highs during the week, with the Dow closing above 40,000 for the first time on Friday. Looking ahead, the Money Wise guys discuss the potential impact of upcoming earnings from major tech companies like Nvidia, emphasizing the importance of their financial results in sustaining market momentum. They noted that continued positive earnings, particularly from leading tech firms, could further bolster investor confidence and drive market performance as the year progresses. The Cooling of Inflation The cooling of inflation, as indicated by recent lower-than-expected Consumer Price Index (CPI) figures, is generally positive for the markets for several reasons. Firstly, it alleviates concerns about the rising cost of living and the potential for eroded consumer purchasing power, which can stifle economic growth. Lower inflation also reduces the pressure on the Federal Reserve to hike interest rates, which is favorable for investment prices as higher interest rates typically lead to lower stock valuations. Furthermore, with less inflationary pressure, businesses face lower input costs, potentially leading to improved profit margins. Overall, a cooling of inflation fosters a more stable financial environment, encouraging investment and contributing to the overall health of the stock market. In the second hour today, the Money Wise guys share their ‘Are You Ready for Retirement' quiz. You don't want to miss the details! This week we bring you a particularly poetic news magazine. KVMR correspondent Al Stahler takes a detour from the science world to explore the realm of arts. He sits down with prolific writer and poet Sands Hall to discuss the medium in anticipation of this weekend's Sierra Poetry Festival. Bringing us squarely back to the reality of capitalism, Former Federal Reserve Economist Gary Zimmerman joins KVMR's Paul Emery in this week's Economic Report. Nevada County's very own Molly Fisk brings us her weekly musings in her latest observations from a working poet.
In this hour of the W&J show the boys dig into the fake economic reports being circulated by Democrats and Trumps history of being quoted out of context.
This week's news magazine features an Economic Report about next week's US Federal Reserve meeting, a Money Matters commentary about health, and an essay by Molly Fisk titled "Arcturus".

(2/5/24) Markets really don't care about the internals of economic reports; at least not as much as you might expect. Markets aren't doing the analysis. Markets see the headline data and move on, which is why they continue to do well, despite the scary data that's emerging... Certainly better than what's being felt by "the man on the street." As investors, then, we have to look at what the data is, and assume how the markets are going to interpret it. And for now, markets remain very bullish, despite last week's selloff.
