This week we crack into an 11 year old whisky originating from the Glentauchers Distillery in Speyside, bottled by Ooshkie, the same Indie Bottling team behind The Whisky Baron brand. We've loved what we tasted from them in the past, but how will this single cask, cask strength, 57.5% ABV whisky matured in first fill ex-boubon casks compare? We also ask the question… What's an NFT?Find the full show notes for this episode at https://www.whiskyandthings.com/podcast/ep114-ooshkie-glentauchers-11-year-old-single-cask-cask-strength-scotch-whiskySocial media:https://www.facebook.com/whiskyandthingshttps://www.twitter.com/whiskyandthingshttps://www.instagram.com/whiskyandthingspodcastWhisky and Things Podcast has been brought to you by “And Things Productions”Support this show http://supporter.acast.com/whiskyandthings. In episode 103 we're sticking with the independent bottlers as we try a smokey little number from Gordon and MacPhail's Discovery Range. Yes we're going to be tasting their 13 Year Old Single Malt Scotch with spirit originating from the Caol Ila Distillery on Islay, but matured in G&M's very own casks. This is our third episode using our extremely straight forward scoring system, so how will this peaty expression hold up? This week's guest on Spirits of Whisk(e)y is Lauren Oliver of Glengoyne Distillery in Dumgoyne, Scotland. Dubbed the "Mash Lass," Lauren is the first woman to serve as Mashhouse Production Operator at Glengoyne and, for that matter, one of comparatively few women working in Scotch whisky. Listen and learn how Oliver, a native of Greater Glasgow, transitioned from a planned career in graphic design to a life in whiskey. Then hear how Glengoyne's 21-Year-Old Single Malt got Chef Louise "Weezy" Leonard craving a big wedge of creamy, slightly stinky, blue cheese, swathed in a layer of buttery puff pastry, served with fresh, ripe apples, and the whole lot drizzled with honey and fresh thyme! With all of the concern going on in the world over recent health challenges, we sincerely hope that this finds you doing well. There are many suggested steps for all of us to take to do our part to help get the situation under control.. At About Beverages, we will be taking those steps and we will also continue to have fun being your source for the sharing of news, knowledge, and of course, the beverages themselves. This episode finds us trying another scotch from Balvenie, as we will be tasting the Balvenie 14 Year Caribbean Cask. It is matured in traditional oak whisky casks for 14 years and then “finished” in barrels that previously contained Caribbean rum. What did we think? What do you think? Let us know in the comments below or join us live on Thursday nights to give us your feedback while we are live streaming on Twitch.
It has been said, probably only by us, that once you have done the same thing two years in a row, a tradition is born. The actual definition of the word “tradition” refers to activities going on longer than two years, but they all had to have their modest beginnings, which is where our tradition stands right now. Last year, thanks to the dedication and generosity of our subscribers, followers, and all who have spent any time with us, we were able to enjoy the Duncan Taylor Dimensions Highland Park 19 Year scotch. It’s retail price was beyond our normal budget, but thanks to your generosity we were able to try it and it was amazing! If you don’t remember how we felt about it, please go back into the archives at aboutbeverages.com and give it a watch. This year, thanks again to all of you, we were once again fortunate enough to be able to make another purchase which was beyond our normal budget. As with last year, we made sure to try it for the first time on our podcast so that we could share our first impressions with you. If you joined us live for our most recent stream, you got to see a preview of this episode as we watched it along with our live audience, but if you weren’t there for that showing, we have it here for you now. This year the decision was narrowed down to a final 2; one bourbon, the other scotch. (Cue the drumroll) The award of being the second beverage chosen for our Annual Traditional Viewer Appreciation Show (or ATVAS) is the Balvenie Portwood 21 Year Old Single Malt Scotch Whisky. The creative folks at Balvenie have taken their 21 year old scotch aged in American oak and aged it even further in port pipes (barrels that are a little taller and thinner) that have been used for over 40 years. As with last year, we were assisted in this decision by our Spirit Guide, Scott at Total Wine, who was once again most generous with his time and expertise. What did we think? What do you think? Let us know in the comments below or join us live on Thursday nights to give us your feedback while we are live streaming on Twitch.
