If you want to know why whisky connoisseurs from all over love peaty, smoky malts, we'll be breaking it down for you in this episode. Find out our favorite go-to products from Islay, as well as the ones we shy away from. Most of all, you'll get all the details and lore begin these huge flavor bombs that may leave you rethinking your take on the whole category. Come get this smoke!
Hood River, Clear Creek, McCarthy's Single Malt, and Trail's End Bourbon - all are the same family, the same facilities, and part of a whole. Hood River Distillers, founded in 1934, was one of the first distilleries to come online post-Prohibition. Clear Creek was founded by Steve McCarthy in 1985, first to produce fruit brandies and later (starting in the '90s) a peated single malt that paid homage to his newfound love of Islay Scotch. Today, McCarthy's (which, though a brand, is the name by which many would call the family of distilleries) is a leading voice in American Single Malt and one of the OG producers. I'm joined by distiller Caitlin Bartlemay to talk through the history, the future, and the present growth of this fascinating distillery (in between bursts of air from the nearby vodka still!) This podcast has focused on different price points before when trying to find good value in Scotch Whisky. This time however we have been asked by a licenser to look into the region of Islay. To see if there is any cheaper options than your Ardbeg 10 or Lagavulin 16, but that still have good flavor and over all enjoyment... Thanks for listening to this episode and thanks for the suggestion Dayton!
Lagavulin 16yr is the most expensive Islay Scotch that we have had on the show so far, but does it live up to the price tag?! In this episode, I walk through a tasting of it with Connor Gilbert, the host of "Who Gives a Dram" and co-host of "Bourbon with Friends" (@connor_whiskey on Instagram). Connor gives us a rundown of his trip to the Islay region of Scotland while walking us through a tasting of this delightful whisky. Support the show on Patreon: patreon.com/whiskeynoobs

Today we are opening with a quote from an expert on today's topic. “All my life I've avoided Europe, and it's multitudes of terribleness, but it turns out, much to my surprise, there is actually one place in Europe that is worth seeing. These tiny islands off the coast of Scotland, where God's chosen elixirs are distilled, barreled, and prepared for consumption. This is worth the trip.” It's time we look at Islay Scotch, and God willing, have a drink.

In this episode, my guests, Will and Tyler of the Viewer Regression Advised Podcast, review two single malt scotches with me. These whiskies are from different regions of Scotland, giving them very different flavor profiles. We get to see the vast difference between a peated Islay Scotch and a Highland Scotch whisky. Finally, we review Glenmorangie 10 year and Laphroaig 10 year single malt scotch whiskies.
The Gentlemen of the World delve into the mystery that is this this un-peated Islay Scotch.
Tonight I start off with my Random Read which pretty much reiterates that walking in truth and light is NOT easy so prepare yourself for rough times. Tonight's drink is an Islay Scotch which comes from the Laphroig Distillary... Laphroaig Select neat. It was a hell of a work week so I needed something to ease the pain. This episode is a virtual pod-tasting and exploration of Lowlands and Islay single malt scotches. From the Lowlands we sampled two expressions from Auchentoshan, their Triple Wood and their Limited Edition Bartender's Malt. We then went on to Islay to discover the smokier side of single malts with the Laphroaig Quarter Cask, and the Ardbeg 10. The smoky Islay inspired us to look at an American whiskey that uses smoke in their process....from Waco, Texas, we sampled Balcones Brimstone and compared it to the Islay single malts.
Once again I'm out of town working... this sure is taking a toll on me but it's a MUST. I start off as I normally do with the random read then, I pour myself a glass of some Islay Scotch neat because it has been one of those weeks and I still have till Friday morning to be in Commifornia (CAN'T WAIT TILL I GO BACK HOME!!!). I read a letter to POTUS from Archbishop Vigano and give my thoughts on it. I then discuss what may result in the election tomorrow if Creepy wins or if DJT wins as either way I think UNREST will occur. I close the show up with... STOP BEING SILENT & SPEAK UP!!! Raj Peter Bhakta has been a successful entrepreneur, a former contestant on The Apprentice, and even a political candidate. But he is best known in the spirits industry as the founder of the premium rye whiskey brand WhistlePig. After selling the popular brand last year, Raj has now moved on to reviving another spirits category that has long been under appreciated - Armagnac brandy. BHAKTA Brandy, launched over the summer, is a blend of 8 Armagnac vintages 50-152 years old, and finished in Islay Scotch casks. Raj and I discuss his move from whiskey to brandy, the story behind these hidden vintages, and why you should be buying these bottles of history now. https://www.leanblog.org/whiskey18In Episode 18, Mark Graban and Jamie Flinchbaugh return to our tried and true format of “just the two of us”, although that won’t last long as Mark will soon have a guest co-host and then we will record an episode live as part of the Colorado Lean Network Summit. Jamie decides to move to the porch, a “proper” whiskey drinking spot in contrast to his office, which might be a new standard (at least until winter). In this episode, we begin by remembering the life of Bill Hanson, who is a co-founder of MIT’s Leaders for Manufacturing program, now called Leaders for Global Operations. Mark and Jamie are both graduates. As we toast Bill’s contributions, we begin sipping our whiskey selection, each choosing a scotch from Islay. Mark is drinking Ardbeg Ultimate 10 Year and Jamie is drinking 16 year old Lagavulin. In the News, we start by talking about Mark’s blog takeover by Deondra Wardelle, who has collected a series of authors to write under the hashtag #rootcauseracism. We continue further to explore articles about asynchronous work. The pandemic has forced many to change their work, leading some to just work harder with less effective and efficient work structures, while others are redesigning how they work leveraging asynchronous work as the pivot. We also explore the frequent questions that Mark and Jamie receive asking for how companies solve problems, and explore both the proper mindset and framing of benchmarking. We invoke a little Jeff Goldblum from Jurassic Park on the value of earning knowledge for yourself. We finish with a discussion of the books we are currently reading. Until next time, cheers! As we open up the last few drams, December 23rd brings us a Bunnahabhain Staoisha 5 Year Old Scotch bottled by the Single Cask Company. Another surprising Islay just as Brandt has learned to appreciate Islay Scotch. “If you came here to learn, drink what you have learned. If you came here to share, share what you drink. If you came here a stranger, may you exit as a friend; and if you came here for and adventure, drink up!” Facebook Group The B-S.E.A. Whiskey Glass
Cole is forcing Adam to drink an Islay Scotch, and Adam is not excited about it in the least. But will Adam find something to complain about with this bottle, or will this be the Islay to defeat all Islays? Only time will tell. Plus, on Whiskey World News, Adam is talking about more Islay Scotch. In the studio, and around the Chill Filtered offices, we're just calling this the Islay Episode. Richie T and Travis Horstman talk about the beautiful unique flavors of Islay Scotch and the Ardbeg 10 year.
In Part I of this in-depth interview and Scotch tasting with Adam Safir of the DC Islay Scotch society, some of the topics we discuss include: How Adam fell in love with Scotch, and what drove him to really dive deep into this particular region. All about whisky societies, including how to find a group to join in your area. How Scotch whiskies produced on Islay traditionally differ in style from those made in other famous regions like the Highlands, or Speyside, for example. Some important definitions for terms like “malting” and “peat,” and an examination of the role that terroir plays in peated malts. How to think about technical terms like Phenol Parts per Million (or PPM) A tasting of several impressive Islay Scotch expressions, And much, much more.
The smokey peat flavor of Islay Scotch is unmistakable, but how much do you really know about where it comes from & how it is made? To help us separate the fact from the legend when it comes to this iconic spirit, we are joined by Simon Brooking of Laphroaig & Bowmore, and he gets in-depth with the production and history. It's science day on Chill Filtered. The boys start the show off talking about the back to school season for Cole, and Adam has some exciting podcast news. Adam is also very excited for this bottle because it's going to take them to space...or is it? And finally, on Whiskey World News, Cole reads an article about a company that is trying to recreate some famous whiskies using science. Tonight we sample 4 single malt Islay scotches. Finlaggan Old Reserve, Bowmore 12 year, Shieldaig Single Malt, and Bunnahabhain 12. Back to the island of Islay…
This is THE DARKEST timeline. It's actually not, but the scotch we're drinking today is labeled "Darkest" so it just felt right to say it. We do start the show off on a serious, bitter-sweet note. Cole's grandmother passed away, so he's back from a funeral but enjoyed seeing his family. Adam has officially started his new part time job at the liquor store (this basically means he has worked his first shift alone). After the boys get done chatting, they pop the cork on the Bowmore 15 Single Malt Islay Scotch. It's a great scotch that Cole really loves. Adam is open to it, but something is reminding him of being in a doctor's office. Tune in to hear the boys' thoughts about this pour. Oh, folks. This week, I get drunk really quickly, continue on and on about Islay Scotch, dividing opinions (on dirt-tasting scotch), working too much, spicy food, and slipping on ice like a dummy and taking it like a chance. Does anybody actually read this? budiak@dynamitegun.com
