Hosts Jim Shannon and Todd Ritter, connecting remotely from Colorado and Kentucky respectively, discuss recent happenings in the bourbon world and taste a couple of whiskies. Jim is in Colorado Springs for a Derby party, having flown out of Louisville on Derby Day. He mentions winning an exacta on the Derby race. He is sipping on Woodford Reserve Distiller's Select 90.4 proof, the annual Derby bottle, describing it as a traditional Woodford. He notes that at the Derby party, they were making mint juleps with Evan Williams Bottled-in-Bond, and while not his favorite drink, he partook. He even helped make the simple syrup. Todd is drinking Penelope Architect, the third in their series. It's a straight bourbon whiskey sourced from MGP, finished in French oak staves, bottled at 104 proof, and retails around $65. Todd finds it nice, noting the MGP cherry character and a "funky oak" from the French staves. They discuss Lost Lantern's new monthly subscription service, which recently launched after they had previously speculated about something similar. The service costs $90 a month plus shipping for a different bottle each month, special sign-up bottles, behind-the-scenes stories, exclusive events, virtual tastings, and early access to new releases. News from Buffalo Trace includes an announcement that they are adding an EH Taylor bottled-in-bond to the Buffalo Trace Antique Collection (BTAC). They speculate it will be a well-aged version and note that some EH Taylor bottles already fetch prices similar to BTAC on the secondary market. They express hope that these will be findable, perhaps requiring waiting in line as in past years. Other news includes the release of the new Wild Turkey 8-year 101, which is starting to hit shelves at an MSRP of $49. They note that 8 years is the minimum age, and it could contain older stock. They are looking forward to reviewing it and comparing it to the 70th-anniversary release. Whiskey Thief has released their 2025 Mayday Rye, a 7-year-old, 146 proof (hazmat) rye. It's available at their distillery in Frankfort and their new tasting room in Louisville, and they are now shipping to some states. The hosts praise Whiskey Thief's ryes. Jim mentions an upcoming interview and tour at Law's Whiskey House in Denver during his Colorado trip. He notes Law's has established itself as a pioneer in Colorado whiskey, particularly with their bottled-in-bond and American single malts. Jim's second pour is the 291 Colorado Rye Whiskey finished in Aspen wood staves and maple syrup barrels, the "M" release, at 122 proof. He finds it has a great maple sweetness and notes that 291 whiskies are generally easy to identify due to their unique profile. He mentions his son recently volunteered bottling and labeling at 291, noting things are going well for the distillery. Todd's second pour is Pikesville Straight Rye from Heaven Hill, 110 proof and 6 years old, retailing around $50. He considers it a classic and a great value rye. He recalls being introduced to it during an interview with Bernie Lubbers at the Evan Williams Experience. They briefly discuss the Heaven Hill rye mashbill used for Rittenhouse and Elijah Craig Ryes, noting different proofs and ages. They talk about recent trends, including the rise of ready-to-drink (RTD) cocktails, which are exploding in popularity, especially with younger consumers. They mention that the largest distillery in the US is now producing White Claw. While neither host is personally a big fan of seltzers or most RTDs, they acknowledge the market demand and hope bourbon is well-represented in this category. They also discuss the growing trend of THC-infused beverages, noting that hemp-derived THC under 0.3% by weight is federally legal. They express confusion about the health claims and draw parallels to the initial marketing of vaping as a safe alternative to cigarettes. They mention a recent barrel pick they did at James E. Pepper Distillery in Lexington for Bourbon on the Banks. They tasted three barrels and selected a bourbon, choosing one they felt would appeal more broadly, although they personally favored another with a great nose (vanilla icing, cake batter). They highlight the historical tour at James E. Pepper, discussing the distillery's long history and the role of James E. Pepper's wife. They note they also tried an excellent rye there aged 7-8 years. They discuss the recent move of RD1 Spirits to a new location and Macaulay Minton's Dark Arts moving into the old RD1 space, noting Macaulay's unique tastes and the interesting decor. They mention Sarah Algrim joining Macaulay. Beau Cumberland's Frankfurt Bourbon documentary is highlighted, with an upcoming screening on Friday, June 13th at The Foundry in Frankfurt, kicking off Bourbon Week. The screening is donation-based, with proceeds going to Frankfurt flood victims. Todd is the narrator for the documentary and receives praise from Jim for his narration skills. They hope to make the documentary more widely available in the future. Jim mentions researching a historical Shannon distillery in Shelbyville from the early 1800s. They recommend Beau Cumberland's YouTube page for short interviews and mini-docs on American spirits. Jim concludes by noting the pleasant "chest hug" from the 291 rye and acknowledging the late hour for Todd. Todd mentions a busy day with his son's soccer game. They wrap up the episode, encouraging listeners to find The Bourbon Road on social media and subscribe to the podcast. Independent bottlers take sourced casks of whisky, mature them, and then bottle them under their own brand names. It's a practice that's been commonplace in Scotland for generations, and has expanded to the U.S. with independents like Single Cask Nation and Lost Lantern. Greg Swartz is the co-director of Independent Spirits, a new documentary series highlighting independent bottlers, and he'll join us on this week's WhiskyCast In-Depth. In the news, a cask investment firm with an estimated $80 million in casks has gone into administration, while Moet Hennessy plans to lay off 1200 workers and return headcount to pre-pandemic levels.
This week Jim and Todd drink through six finished whiskeys from Lost Lantern's recent releases of both their Single Cask Series as well as their Single Distillery Series. Lost Lantern Whiskey took the Scotch Whiskey tradition of independent bottlers and applied it to American craft whiskies. Founders Nora Ganley-Roper and Adam Polonski weren't the first independent bottlers of American whiskies, but their selections over the last four years represent an eclectic variety of whiskies from around the country. They're about to release their Fall 2024 tranche of whiskies, all at or close to ten years old, and we'll catch up with Nora and Adam on this week's WhiskyCast In-Depth. In the news, it's budget week in the U-K, and Scotch Whisky makers will be watching closely for news of an excise tax cut. We'll have the rest of the week's whisky news as well, along with this week's tasting notes and a look at so-called “vatted malts."

Blind tasting can help you learn to taste the whiskey more objectively, and to rely on your senses to identify its characteristics. Here are some tips for setting up a blind whiskey tasting: Arrange bottles randomly: Cover the bottles with numbered sleeves or bags to hide their identities. Prepare tasting glasses: Provide a tasting glass for each participant. Have water and palate cleansers: Provide water and palate cleansers for participants. Bring a notepad and pen: Have a notepad and pen available for taking notes. You can also buy blind tasting kits, which can include whiskies, instructions, and tasting sheets. Some examples include: Whiskies of the World: A package that includes four different whiskies, instructions, a tasting sheet, and hints to help you guess which whiskey is which Blind Barrels: A subscription service that provides four 50 ml samples of American whiskey each quarter, along with a tasting led by a spirits guide Great Whiskey Challenge: A premium blind taste testing kit that you can use with family and friends

Shining A Light On The Independent Spirit Lost Lantern - Adam, Nora, and their team - are bar none the best independent bottler of American whiskey working today. They have a serious claim to my favorite IB period. More than anything, you know that they've done the work and can talk about the barrels, brands, and distilleries they choose to work with, which for whiskey nerds like I (and probably you!) is just *chef's kiss*. Join me as I sit down with Nora and Adam from Lost Lantern Whiskey to uncover the magic behind their Summer of Bourbon 2 series. We'll explore the rich tapestry of nine distinct bourbon releases, each chosen from twelve distilleries across twelve states, including the rare gems from a ghost distillery in Mississippi. Discover what makes this year's collection a step up from last year's and hear about the serendipitous journey that led them to acquiring Rich Grain Distilling's bourbon stocks. Ever wondered how the Gulf Coast climate impacts the flavor profile of bourbon? Nora and Adam share their groundbreaking techniques and insights, such as rebarreling bourbon into larger used casks to create flavor complexity without the tannin overload (a major sticking point that I thank them for, profusely). We'll dive into the unique qualities of Gulf Coast bourbon and why it's exclusively available through Lost Lantern's Mississippi Memory series. Additionally, you'll gain a deeper understanding of how blending bourbons from diverse distilleries across America creates a balanced and intricate final product, guided by a blend captain who ensures each batch is perfect. Curious about the challenges faced by regional distilleries and the innovative approaches they use? We'll highlight distilleries like Rock Town in Arkansas, High Wire in South Carolina, and the nuances of the Lincoln County Process in Tennessee whiskey at Lieper's Fork. Listen as we compare the unique methods, ingredients, and local climates that shape these exceptional bourbons. Plus, get a behind-the-scenes look at how Lost Lantern selects and maintains high standards for their releases, ensuring that each bottle tells a story and captures the essence of its origins. Don't miss this journey through the evolving landscape of American bourbon. Welcome back today we are talking to Nora andAdam of lost Lantern. They have just released there midwest series, we talked about that and a lot more hope you enjoy. Badmotivatorbarrels.com/shop/?aff=3 Z.Smithwhiskey&mixology Patreon.com/the_whiskeyshaman The Lost Lantern Process We will only work with places that make great whiskey, but that's just table stakes. With more than 2,000 distilleries operating in the U.S., there are more places making whiskey than we could possibly work with. That's why we spent eight months driving across the countryvisiting distilleries, seeing for ourselves how they did things, and hunting down the hidden gems that aren't as widely known. That means we can be very selective and have an extensive screening process when it comes to selecting our partners. Finding the right distilleries to work with is one of the most time-consuming and important parts of our process. THE VISITWe carefully research distilleries before visiting them and once we're onsite, we strive to understand exactly how they make their whiskey. We look at their stills, their barrelhouse, and everything in between. THE STORYThe vast majority of American distilleries are only around 10 years old, if not less. The founders are usually still in charge. We want to know what drives them: what their vision is for their whiskey now and in the future. THE WHISKEYWe don't just want great whiskey. We want exciting whiskey. Our partners are inventing new techniques, reviving old ones, experimenting with new ideas. They are driving American whiskey forward.

From Great Brewing Comes Great Distilling Copperworks Distilling is making whiskey from grain. Simple, right? I mean, from a legal sense, that's quite literally what every other whiskey-maker is doing. That's where the similarities end. Jason Parker, co-founder and longtime brewer, is experimenting with barley in ways that are different not only from other distillers but singularly unique from release to release. I first got to try Copperworks from our friends at Lost Lantern, who did a single malt finished in sloe gin that was just fantastic. With Jason, I tried four products - Releases 49 + 50, two variants of Fritz Malt (Pale and Vienna), a peated edition, and another barley variety that showcased the care Jeff and Jason have for the grain. Another of my favorite distillers, Alan Bishop, says to always "respect the grain". Sometimes, people do it with the right intention but the wrong ethos. Jason and Jeff do it with every single piece thought out, every variable considered and controlled. Not every experiment works, of course, but those that do are incredible. This is a distillery where you may not like every release (or maybe you will!), but each one is worthy of your attention. And you will, no matter what, feel the passion and intention through the grain. Respect, indeed. Thanks everyone for listening, and thank you to Jason for entering the Whiskey Ring! _________________________________________________________ If you haven't joined the Patreon community yet, please consider doing so at patreon.com/whiskeyinmyweddingring If you haven't yet, please follow Whiskey in my Wedding Ring and the Whiskey Ring Podcast on Instagram, Facebook and Twitter, and subscribe to the newsletter on the website. The Best of the (Mid)West! The Spring 2024 Collection launches today, March 27! We first met Lost Lantern Spirits way back in Episode 53 - they are "shining a light on the independent spirit", bringing the tradition of independent bottling (and blending!) to American whiskey. In the two-ish years since, co-founders Nora Ganley-Roper and Adam Polonski have grown and grown, now with a physical space in Vermont and reach across the country. They've won awards, beaten distilleries at their own game (see: Balcones), and established the idea that American whiskey can be independently bottled and blended to showcase both the individual distilleries and the blending acumen of the founders. For this episode, we explore their first-ever themed release: the Spring 2024 collection. This collection of seven spirits is all about the midwest. Starting with their Far-Flung Rye blend, incorporating ryes from Wollersheim Distillery, Middle West Spirits, Starlight Distillery, Tom's Foolery Distillery, and Cedar Ridge Distillery. All five of these distilleries - plus FEW Spirits - also have a single barrel release as part of this collection. You can grab these at lostlanternwhiskey.com starting today! I have to say, the Far-Flung Rye, Wollersheim bourbon, Tom's Foolery rye, and Cedar Ridge Wheat Whiskey were my favorites, but I encourage you to try them all. Adam and Nora know what they're doing, and each release shows that more and more. Thanks everyone for listening, and thank you to Adam and Nora for returning to the Whiskey Ring! This week we welcome Lost Lantern Whiskey back to the show! Nora Ganley-Roper and Adam Polonski join us to talk about their new Spring 2024 Midwest Collection! We go into how every region has its own whiskey personality and how they scoured the midwest for the best whiskies possible to make up this new Sprint 2024 Collection. It's a great conversation and I can't thank Nora and Adam enough for coming back on the show and sharing this good whiskey with us on this weeks Bourbon Showdown Podcast!
As far as we're aware, you can count the number of US-based independent bottlers; bottling whisky in the Scottish tradition where the distillery is highlighted/mentioned on two fingers: Single Cask Nation and Lost Lantern. Listen in as Joshua and Jason (of SCN fame) discuss independent bottling with Nora & Adam (of Lost Lantern fame). There are also a number of Lost Lantern bottlings tasted in this episode. Spoiler alert: they're some highly quaffable bottlings, to be sure! ...as usual, have a seat, have a pour, and listen in. Unless you're driving. If you're driving, be smart and stay sober but be sure to listen into the conversation! The 128-year-old family-owned independent bottler stunned the whisky world this week with news that it will stop sourcing new make spirit from other distillers starting next year. Instead, Gordon & MacPhail will focus on single malts from its two distilleries, Benromach and The Cairn in the future. With decades of maturing whisky on hand, the change won't be felt for at least 12 to 15 years and Gordon & MacPhail will continue bottling older whiskies for decades to come. We'll discuss the change in philosophy with G&M managing director Ewen Mackintosh on this week's WhiskyCast In-Depth. On Behind the Label, we'll celebrate the 200th anniversary of the Excise Act of 1823, which directly led to today's Scotch Whisky industry, and we'll have tasting notes for whiskies from Bunnahabhain, Lost Lantern, and Dràm Mòr, too.

We're finally back to whiskey, I promise! This is a classic episode - a distillery making single malt in the corn capital of the US. Don't worry, they make a damn good bourbon, too, but my first taste of Cedar Ridge was a single barrel of their single malt picked by Lost Lantern. I'm joined by head distiller and Scotch-lover Murphy Quint, who has led the distillery's operations except for a stint at Stranahan's. We chatted about adding a distillery onto a winery, making their whiskey stand out, and most importantly what the Quints want their legacy to be. _________________ Before we jump into the interview just a few quick notes: The first WRP barrel pick is coming! Independent bottling is common in Scotch, but not in American whiskey. Why? We ask Nora Ganley-Roper and Adam Polonski, founders of Lost Lantern, a fast-growing independent bottler of American whiskeys. They talk about the process of discovering unique spirits, picking which distilleries to work with, and what's next for American single malt, which has been a category focus for them.
This week we'll have Lost Lantern joining us and talking about what it takes to be an independent bottler, how they came up with the idea for the business and maybe even some of their products from their most recent launch. @lostlanternwhiskey
Episode 53 brings a new category to the Whiskey Ring Podcast: American Independent Bottlers. My guests are Nora Ganley-Roper and Adam Polonski, co-founders of Lost Lantern Whiskey and independent bottlers of American whiskey from all over the country. Both founders have deep whiskey experience, Nora from Astor Wine and Spirits in New York and Adam from Whiskey Advocate, and both wanted to bring the two-century-old Scottish tradition of independent bottling to America. But they're not content bottling the big guys - they want to bottle and bring to market less-known distilleries from underrepresented regions all over the US. Just a few of the distilleries they've bottled so far: - Frey Ranch in Nevada - Spirit Works in California - Starlight in Indiana - Cedar Ridge in Iowa And, they have their own in-house blend, the American Vatted Malt Edition 1 that brings together 6 distilleries' American single malts into perhaps the first American Blended Malt to seriously enter the market. I loved it. Check out my tasting notes on four of their products farther down in this description. _________________ Before we jump into the interview just a few quick notes: If you haven't joined the Patreon community yet, please consider doing so. They are like the Indiana Jones's of Whiskey, they hunt down whiskies that people haven't discovered yet and shine the spotlight on the distilleries, it's a beautiful thing! As you know timing is everything and the NEW Lost Lantern Whiskey 2022 collection comes out… today! Thats right on March 1st they will announce the Lost Lantern's Spring 2022 collection that will feature four limited edition single casks from four celebrated distilleries: Smooth Ambler in West Virginia, Westward in Oregon, Frey Ranch Distillery in Nevada and Spirit Works in California. Beginning March 9, the Spring 2022 single cask collection will be available for sale on LostLanternWhiskey.com and Seelbachs.com. All offerings are bottled at cask strength, are non-chill-filtered and have natural color. Do yourself a favor and experience these amazing whiskeys for yourself! I had a great time interviewing Nora and Adam about their whiskey adventures and think all of you are really going to enjoy this episode!
In the second episode with Adam and Nora from Lost Lantern and Stephen Paul, founder of Whiskey Del Bac, we really dig into some interesting flavor differences between three expressions - a couple of which, though distilled at the same time and aged right next to each other in identical barrels, taste unexpectedly different! We also talk a bit about Whiskey Del Bac's maturation program and delve a little into some really promising things to come! --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/single-malt-matters/message
In the first of two episodes with Stephen Paul of Whiskey Del Bac and Adam and Nora of Lost Lantern, we discuss the back story of Whiskey Del Bac, which was born out of a love of Scotch and a furniture business, as well as what it was that appealed to Adam and Nora. Adam and Matt also catch up about ACSA, and talk about the Good Deeds Malt Whiskey release by the Good Guy Distillers! AND be sure to listen all the way to the end to get in on the FIRST EVER Single Malt Matters single barrel release, featuring Balcones! --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/single-malt-matters/message
Independent bottlers buy casks of whisky and sell them under their own labels, and while they're common in Scotland and other parts of the world, independent bottlers are much less common in the United States. Last year, Nora Ganley-Roper and Adam Polonski gave up their day jobs to start Lost Lantern with a goal of bottling some of the best American whiskies available. So far, their whiskies have been a success, and they celebrated their first anniversary with a new release of five different whiskies from distilleries around the U.S. They'll join us on WhiskyCast In-Depth to discuss that early success, the difficulties in establishing an independent bottler, and working together as a couple during the pandemic. In the news, longtime Johnnie Walker master blender Jim Beveridge is retiring at year's end, and his successor will break new ground for the 201-year-old brand. Emma Walker will become the first woman to hold the title in Johnnie Walker's long history. Heaven Hill is hiring replacements for its striking workers in Kentucky, and one of Australia's largest distillers is planning a major expansion after its latest acquisition. We'll have those stories and much more...including what can happen when a royal visit to a distillery doesn't quite go as planned.
Today we sit down with Nora Ganley-Roper, co-founder of Lost Lantern Whiskey, who turned a dream road trip into a truly unique and forward thinking business. See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
