Hello everybody and welcome back to Manga Mavericks @ Movies, the show where we don't talk smack about movies, we celebrate them, except for the rare occasions we do talk smack about movies, but that wouldn't be very Christmasy of us would it? Yes, it's been a while, but we're back to throw another log on the @ Movies fire just in time for Yule as a Christmas gift to our dear listeners, presenting our first ever special Manga Mavericks @ Movies interview with Casper Kelly, the creator of many [adult swim] classics like Stroker & Hoop, Your Pretty Face is Going to Hell, Too Many Cooks, Final Deployment 4, and his newest special and first ever feature film, Adult Swim's Yule Log (aka The Fireplace)! Yule Log was the wonderful wintertime gift we didn't know we wanted when it premiered after the Rick & Morty season finale last Sunday night, it's the kind of special surprise and creative novelty that I absolutely love [adult swim] for and why they're still the best network around, because no other network would greenlight a feature film based around a Yule Log video gone horribly wrong like this. But the film is so much more than just an inspired gimmick, and we go deep with Casper to ask burning questions about what sparks his imagination and lit the fire of the themes placed in the film, and he lays down a lot of fascinating insights you'll want to log! If you have not seen Yule Log yet I highly recommend you go to adult swim's website or HBO MAX and watch it first, going in completely blind, and then coming back to this interview. I do not avoid spoilers in my questions and one of mine involves discussing the ending of the film and its implications, so definitely watch the film first, and don't start a flame war with me if you don't! But enough burning the midnight oil, let's crawl into the fireplace and chat with the man behind this Yuletime jewel sublime, Casper Kelly! Enjoy the show, and follow us on twitter at @manga_mavericks, on tumblr at mangamavericks.tumblr.com, and subscribe to us on Youtube. Coping with the holidays seems to be the thing most of us are doing, no matter how many times we are told it's "the most wonderful time of the year." The older I get, the more the responsibilities mount, the time seems to shorten, and the suffering around me becomes more apparent. This time of the year is actually quite hard for me. On one hand, I have quite magical hopes for the season. The reality of coping is another story.  Navigating this season with mental illness in yourself or a dependent family member can make for some absurdly stressful situations. How do we get through this season with our mental health intact?  Here are seven coping skills to help you "Rule the Yule" this year. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=keSLVQZ4A34#action=share Check out the video or audio version of this post for additional content! Set Expectations We have to set reasonable expectations for ourselves and those around us. The holidays can be absolutely magical for many people. There is so much to do and see. We have nostalgic memories of activities with loved ones, multiple holidays, and the media constantly reminding us of how important this time of year is. The problem is that there aren't any more hours in the day or days in the week. The amount of tasks increases exponentially, while the days stay the same, or feel even shorter due to the decreased sunlight hours. Bottom line - we cannot expect to bake 300 cookies, host multiple parties, hand-make all the gifts, work a job, see all the people we want, account for weather and sickness and everything else and still maintain good self care. Honor Boundaries In line with setting expectations, is honoring boundaries. When we interact with so many people we may not normally interact with, we are going to end up with some uncomfortable situations. Without trying to amp ourselves up by obsessing, we can plan ahead and think about what boundaries might be pushed. Does that one Aunt always want a hug and you really don’t? It’s okay to have a physical boundary with relatives. Need to avoid certain topics or behaviors that may come up? What are you comfortable with? Where do you draw the line? If you can, talk about these with a trusted friend or a therapist if you have one. Literally practice if you can. It may feel ridiculous but it can actually really help. Receive graciously Being on the receiving end of gifts can be hard. During this time of year, often people want to give, give, give. Gifts. Food. Even time. Often, what they are really trying to do is express love. We live in a society where expressing emotions outside of designated times, places, dates, volumes, etc is really shamed and looked at as odd. We often end up bottling or saving these emotions for later - I will show them how much I love them with this gift. We reserve our deep emotions for the “right” time. The holidays feels “right” for many people because we have societal permission. It may help if we can sift through the noise and see that generally, people give gifts as ways of connecting to loved ones. If you’re in a position of need, it may be even harder. If you cant reciprocate in kind, it can bring up feelings of shame. That is not an easy position to be in. I want to remind you that you have far more to offer this world than material goods or services. You are valuable and worthy as the receiver. Give generously Now is the time of year that everyone seems to have a donation basket. Then there’s always these stories like “I gave away my last $20 to a needy mom, and then i won the lottery” C’mon now. That’s not reality. Reality is that $20 is $20, and you have bills to pay, too. I get it. You don’t have to give money. Or things. Or even time. What about love? You may not be able to eek out another cent, or another second to volunteer. You may not even be able to give MORE love than you are. That’s okay. Just continue to give love generously.

Yule is a time to give thanks to the returning sun and warmth, it’s when the sun is reborn. On the eve of the Winter Solstice, I’m going to give each child a floating red candle that will burn all night to welcome the returning sun. Some other activities we'll do through December: —Make handmade Yule cards —Bake —Make salt dough ornaments —Go look at Christmas lights —Read books —Make cinnamon stick pentacles ornament —Decorate round cookies to represent the sun —Plus more! This week I'm breaking format completely. No news, no Jackass Of The Week, no Recommended Listening. I'm going old school for the last show of the year and just vamping. I get into my returning to work while healing from my rib injuries, what we did for our Yule holiday, checking out Christmas lights, trying to go shopping on Christmas Day, and what I want to do with the show for next year. In 2018 I would like to start using the Recommended Listening segment to feature podcast submissions from listeners. I can only suggest so many shows personally, and I want to hear what you are listening to. Send me you recommendations/ reviews either written or in audio form to odddadout@gmail.com. I am turning the segment over to you, dear listener. As a bonus, if you submit a feature to me for the show, I will put all of those together and draw one out to win some Odd Dad Out Swag. Happy New Year! I hope to see you in 2018. Thank You and Goodnight...

Welcome to the first annual Yule special. Satan has reigned over us all all year, so let's break a little love off for Odin. You won't find any guts or gore this week, rather a peek into Norse traditions, with a hearty wreath of hatred for Christianity. May you all have a happy Yuletime. Hails!

As is Christmas tradition, there are always a whole host of festive movies to watch over the holiday period. But Off Piste thought that was far too wholesome. So which festive characters will survive in a DUEL TO THE DEATH? Luck has a cantankerous old man rally felt forces against ravenous beasts, Neil pits the Dark Knight against a strangely familiar foe and Tull installs the world's smallest sociopath in control of Nakatomi Plaza. Meanwhile, Shigeru and Emiko overhear Kazuhiro and Lisa arguing over the former's suspicions about Axel, and Deputy Flint realises that Thin Eric's still-comatose daughter Isla may be at risk once again.
