April 14-20: Rob Zombie burns through the witches, The Beatles are in a new format, there's lots of apocalypses going around, Michael Jordan's last dance, the Branch Davidian saga ends badly, Wesley Snipes is boiling, Seinfeld gets smelly, Jamie Kennedy is unwanted, Chow Yun-fat is bulletproof, and Your Pretty Face is Going to Hell. All that and more this week on Thirty Twenty Ten.
On this edition of Parallax Views, Adult Swim, the late night programming block, followed up the Season 6 finale of the popular Rick and Morty with the Adult Swim Yule Log (aka The Fireplace). What started out as a seemingly ordinary yule log video quickly morphed into something more unexpected: a feature-length film. More precisely, a horror movie featuring a cavalcade of genre tropes including UFOs, Satanic cults, murderous rednecks in the vein of The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, and even a rather devious little imp. Melding humor with comedy, the Adult Swim Yule Log is something that has to be seen to be believed as it's unlike anything you've likely seen before. Joining us on this episode is the Adult Swim Yule Log's writer/director, Casper Kelly. Casper is perhaps best known for his [adult swim] absurdist shorts Final Deployment 4: Queen Battle Walkthrough, the infamous Too Many Cooks, and the TV series Your Pretty Face is Going to Hell starring The Last Podcast on the Left's Henry Zebrowski. Additionally, Casper created the "Cheddar Goblin" sequence for the Nicolas Cage-starring horror movie Mandy and has written for such shows as The Squidbillies and Nickelodeon's CatDog. Oh, and he created the Scooby Doo parody of The Blair Witch Project known as The Scooby Doo Project. Much of Casper's work is available on Youtube and you can check a lot of it out through his website. In this conversation we discuss: - How the feature-length Adult Swim Yule Log came to be - The thematic threads in Casper's work including depression, anxiety, media, and, in the case of the Adult Swim Yule Log, the grappling with the history of American slavery, the idea of "time privilege", and whether we are really progressing as a society or not - Influences on Casper's work; John Carpenter, Sam Raimi and The Evil Dead, David Lynch and Twin Peaks, and the satirical elements of Paul Verhoeven (Starship Troopers, Robocop, and Showgirls) are all mentioned - New media in Casper's projects (yule log videos and podcasting in the Adult Swim Yule Log and video game streamers in Final Deployment 4: Queen Battle Walkthrough) - Making Too Many Cooks, which plays with the trope of 80s/90s sitcom intros; the research that went into making the short and the way in which the sitcom intro-style is both absurdist and realistic in terms of the kind of shows intros it's satirizing/homaging - The question of whether Casper's works are comedic satire or eerie horror - Working within constraints and how those constraints can actually lead to greater forms of creativity - The difference between working on shows like The Squidbillies and CatDog compared to Casper's projects like Too Many Cooks and the Adult Swim Yule Log - Whether or not Adult Swim has been short thrifted by the way some people write it off as "stoner comedy" content - Horror and comedy as genres which are related to each other - The making of the "Cheddar Goblin" sequence in Mandy - Dealing with the issue of slavery in the plot of the Adult Swim Yule Log - And much, much more!
Hello everybody and welcome back to Manga Mavericks @ Movies, the show where we don't talk smack about movies, we celebrate them, except for the rare occasions we do talk smack about movies, but that wouldn't be very Christmasy of us would it? Yes, it's been a while, but we're back to throw another log on the @ Movies fire just in time for Yule as a Christmas gift to our dear listeners, presenting our first ever special Manga Mavericks @ Movies interview with Casper Kelly, the creator of many [adult swim] classics like Stroker & Hoop, Your Pretty Face is Going to Hell, Too Many Cooks, Final Deployment 4, and his newest special and first ever feature film, Adult Swim's Yule Log (aka The Fireplace)! Yule Log was the wonderful wintertime gift we didn't know we wanted when it premiered after the Rick & Morty season finale last Sunday night, it's the kind of special surprise and creative novelty that I absolutely love [adult swim] for and why they're still the best network around, because no other network would greenlight a feature film based around a Yule Log video gone horribly wrong like this. But the film is so much more than just an inspired gimmick, and we go deep with Casper to ask burning questions about what sparks his imagination and lit the fire of the themes placed in the film, and he lays down a lot of fascinating insights you'll want to log! If you have not seen Yule Log yet I highly recommend you go to adult swim's website or HBO MAX and watch it first, going in completely blind, and then coming back to this interview. I do not avoid spoilers in my questions and one of mine involves discussing the ending of the film and its implications, so definitely watch the film first, and don't start a flame war with me if you don't! But enough burning the midnight oil, let's crawl into the fireplace and chat with the man behind this Yuletime jewel sublime, Casper Kelly! Enjoy the show, and follow us on twitter at @manga_mavericks, on tumblr at mangamavericks.tumblr.com, and subscribe to us on Youtube. This week Val and Rachel discuss Northern Exposure, an American Northern comedy-drama television series about the eccentric residents of a fictional small town in Alaska that ran on CBS from July 12, 1990, to July 26, 1995, with a total of 110 episodes. It received 57 award nominations during its five-year run and won 27, including the 1992 Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Drama Series, two additional Primetime Emmy Awards, four Creative Arts Emmy Awards, and two Golden Globes. Critic John Leonard called Northern Exposure "the best of the best television in the past 10 years". Hot Topics Include: 1.) Is Northern Exposure more like a boring Twin Peaks or a boring Picket Fences (or a boring Schitt's Creek?)? 2) What would get this show "canceled" first-- poor representation or sexual power imbalances? 3) We dabble into strange waters.. "What Ya Listening To?" 4.) Celebrity Baby Names 5.) Rachel says "titillate" more than she should 6.) Dropping shows in their last season 7.) What Ya Watchin': Younger, Your Pretty Face is Going to Hell, Neon Joe: Werewolf Hunter, Cruella 8.) (Or a boring Doc Hollywood?) https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Northern_Exposure

Henry is joined by legendary radio personality Phil Hendrie and they discuss Phil's storied career, working together on Your Pretty Face is Going to Hell, and moving from radio to new media.
A bit of a dream for us this week as we are joined by actor, comedian and podcast legend Henry Zebrowski! Henry has cropped up in all manner of film and TV, including The Wolf of Wall Street, Your Pretty Face is Going to Hell, Heroes Reborn, Inside Amy Schumer, but is probably best known for hosting smash hit The Last Podcast on the Left. When we're not getting sidetracked by having so much fun, we discuss the Murder in Setagaya case which saw an entire family brutally slain by an unknown murderer, unknown despite leaving bucketloads of DNA at the crime scene...At the Mystery on the Rocks bar you’ll find a retired sleuth, the bartender trying to settle his tab, and the down-on-her-luck lounge singer, solving mysteries and drinking cocktails. Each week a new guest enters the bar and attempts to solve an unsolved mystery alongside the regulars. Hosted by Masud Milas, Chris Stokes, and Sooz Kempner. It’s a high concept comedy and true crime podcast, set in a fictional crime-solving bar (with real cocktails!). The focus of the show is to attempt to crack a real, unsolved mystery from history – true crime and bizarre occurrences, all with a whodunnit or WTF happened question hanging over them. Masud makes the drinks, Chris tells the mystery and Sooz sings and plays live piano – and everyone chats and chimes in with their theories. You can follow us on Twitter and Instagram too!Produced by Chris Stokes, Masud Milas and Sooz Kempner. Dan Triandiflou is a long-time working Atlanta actor, best known for his recurring role as Benji in Your Pretty Face is Going to Hell. Our conversation about the fear of being dependant on others reinforces these two life lessons for me: 1) it’s ok to need help sometimes 2) focus on the areas of your life or career that you CAN control Find me on Twitter and Instagram and let me know what you think!
Apocalypse Alarm! Starting season 4 of Your Pretty Face is Going To Hell today and it was quite trip. Union meetings, a cult, a trial and more! If you can talk to ghosts, can you talk to people? Can you get to Toetopia by reading the Toely Footble? What does TWIST stand for? What do they have in the Party Hole? Anyone could be you. You are a buncha bodily tics and vocal inflections. A rude friend or knowing coworker could rip you apart to everyone's amusement, you bet. Could rip you up like deli cuts of ham, heh heh. Episode 29! Master Shake himself, a.k.a. the hilarious Dana Snyder, joins Gary & Elliot for a chat about his career as an Adult Swim mainstay on shows like The Venture Brothers, Your Pretty Face is Going to Hell, Squidbillies, and of course AQUA TEEN HUNGER FORCE! All that, plus a cocktail with featuring a pickled onion! This week's drink by Elliot: Tomato Water Vodka Gibson 1.5 oz Smirnoff Vodka 1 oz Dolin Dry Vermouth 1 oz tomato water 2 dashes The Bitter Truth celery bitters Cocktail onion garnish Combine vodka, vermouth, tomato water, and bitters in a mixing glass with ice and stir until well-chilled. Strain into a coupe cocktail glass and garnish with a cocktail onion on a pick. *(To make the tomato water, put about a pound of fresh tomatoes and a pinch of salt into a food processor and puree. Pour into a strainer lined with several layers of cheesecloth and suspended over a bowl - OR - into a doubled-up cone coffee filter inserted into the mouth of a large jar and secured with a rubber band. Pour pureed tomatoes into the filter.Regardless of method, cover with plastic wrap and let filter overnight in the fridge without pushing down on the tomatoes, which will result in cloudy tomato water. The end result should be clear and slightly red.) Like the sound of that cocktail? Then check out Elliot's book Create 100 Cocktails, available right now in print on Amazon! We got together with Actor Henry Zebrowski at Gengis Cohen Chinese restaurant to chat with him about his new HBO show Crashing, the new season of his Adult Swim show Your Pretty Face is Going to Hell, his role in The Wolf of Wall Street, and of course had to talk about Satan. Henry helped us summon the beast and as the ground below the Chinese restaurant began to crack open. I thought about all the mistakes I've made in my life and wished I could apologize for a few things. First I would ask for forgiveness for that time I had sex with my ex girlfriend in the men's bathroom of a karaoke bar and then told her to wait in the men's stall while I made sure the coast was clear, but instead I just left her in the men's bathroom and got in my car and drove home. Anyway, Satan arrived and hung out with us for a while and we talked about Food Network shows. Oh, BTW, Logan Guntzelman joined us and we all had great laughs! It was a wonderful day. It's time for you to account for your sins by listening to...THE NIGHT TIME SHOW!
Henry Zebrowski joins the Shadow Nation discussing hell, especially Adult Swim's hit "Your Pretty Face is Going to Hell" where he plays Gary, an Associate Demon trying to climb the corporate ladder by collecting souls for Satan. To celebrate the series' third season Cap and boR are joined by Henry Zebrowski (The Wolf of Wall Street) who plays the hapless demon, Gary, Satan himself: Matt Servitto (The Sopranos) and writer/ directors Dave Willis (Aqua Teen Hunger Force) and Casper Kelly (Too Many Cooks). When you're doing a show where red body paint is required dress code, and you're getting shat on by devils, you can bet there's some wild stories. Hear all about the exotic body parts, mushroom flashbacks, and green screen magic behind the scenes. Even if this is your first time on the rack, this is a prefect primer for the sublime tortures of Willis and Kelly's series. Plus you'll get the answers to age old questions like can aliens go to hell? What's after Too many Cooks? And will Henry's bold concept restaurant, Foogler's, get off the ground? My father, a chef, was constantly singing and listening to music while tending to his own craft in the kitchen, while my mother, a ballet dancer, always danced around the house to Spanish boleros or classical music.”For someone whose early life was filled with such a range of artistic influences, it makes sense that Migguel Anggelo did not limit himself to one of the many talents that came naturally to him: acting, dancing, singing, writing, and painting among them. Instead, he chose to do them all.He writes poetry and lyrics that walk a fine line between confession and invitation. He performs live shows with elaborate orchestration and staging that feels like a rock show one moment and an operatic dream the next. He dances with the ease of a child whose parents never told him to sit still. He creates sculptural portraits of people—historic and contemporary—in the form of chairs made from all kinds of unlikely materials, from matches to yarn. He paints images using simple and innocent gestures, leaving one to wonder what the true story is. Migguel is a storyteller, and a masterful one at that.Born in Venezuela, Migguel first fell in love with the theater as a child playing Pinocchio in a touring production of the show. It was during his time as this character, who battles with fact and fiction, that he learned the integral role of fantasy in storytelling, and began to realize real and imagined characters could illustrate the many facets of his own experience. As a Latin American theater star, Migguel perfected his commanding stage presence and electric performances.Anggelo studied opera at the Conservatory of Music in Cologne, Germany (receiving an invitation to attend after being discovered busking on the street) and trained for a dozen years in classical ballet, falling in love with the drama and discipline of opera and the explosive whimsy of pop. He counts Luciano Pavarotti and Freddy Mercury as two of his greatest influences and, with his multi-octave voice, pays homage to them by jumping easily from operatic aria to rock anthem.Migguel has performed on many of the world’s greatest stages, including Teatro Teresa Carreño in Caracas, Venezuela; Teatro Insurgentes in Mexico City; Teatro Jorge Eliezer Gaytan in Bogota, Colombia; Teatro Gran Rex in Buenos Aires, Argentina; and Burgen Zentrum Theater in Cologne, Germany, and has sold out performances and world class venue Joe’s Pub in Manhattan (in May, September, and December), at BAMcafé in Brooklyn, and the New World Center in Miami,Fresh off his latest tour with Nuevo Tango group, The Oblivion Project (a group dedicated to performing the music of tango master Astor Piazzolla), Anggelo has been exposing new audiences to his delicate, yet incredibly powerful vocal abilities. Invited by the group to bring his talent and shared admiration for Piazzolla’s art as their lead vocalist, Anggelo and the Oblivion Project performed a series of exclusive concerts held throughout the Midwest. His latest album La Casa Azul, released earlier this year, is a collection of twelve songs (co-written and produced by music director, Mau Quiros, and mixed by Grammy Award-winner Felipe Tichauer) and is dedicated to Mexican painter and Latin icon, Frida Kahlo. Named after her house in Mexico City, known as the Blue House, La Casa Azul explores topics ranging from the artists’ life to commentary on the hypocrisy of the worlds’ dictators and an immigrant’s dream. Lyrically filled with metaphors and references to art, culture and poetry, the album really reflects the depth of thought he has invested in his craft.Following 6 previously sold out shows, Anggelo returns to Joe’s Pub on December 1st to perform his newest show, Another Son of Venezuela. Together with Obie Award-winning director, David Drake, Migguel presents this new musical narrative exploring the themes of love, loss, family, and national pride as well as the challenges of claiming an authentic identity in the “land of the free”. The performance will consist of a mixture of original compositions as well as interpretations of Latin, folk, pop, and opera works.Anggelo’s evolving body of work reminds us that the way a story is told is as important as the actual story itself. Summoning all of his gifts—song, poetry, drawing, physical gesture—Migguel Anggelo creates theatrical metaphors that blur the boundaries between performance art and popular music. For Anggelo, this is just the beginning.Visit the Links below:www.migguelanggelo.com www.facebook.com/migguelanggelo www.twitter.com/migguelanggelo
