[School of Movies 2023] This is our second attempt at a film that might mean *everything*. We had a go at recording on this 1997 Robert Zemekis sci-fi about attempting to decode alien messages all the way back in 2014. The discussion broke down soon after that opening section which crams a whole universe into our minds. Fortunately for us and you, this became a commissioned show (Many thanks to Executive Producer Matthew A. Seibert) which means we can't set it down or put it off any more. Jodie Foster puts in an astonishing performance as a woman in the grip of lifelong obsession, searching for answers. When her SETI team at the Very Large Array of radio telescope dishes in New Mexico get a long-distance message the entirety of Planet Earth is thrown into a chaotic conflict to establish meaning. Religion and science are put in opposition of one another, with explosive results. Astrophysicist Carl Sagan began conceptualising what would happen to the human race if it came into contact with intelligent life back in the late 70s, which precipitated an eighteen-year production limbo that he would not live to see the end of. Fortunately, Zemekis' film maintained the spirit of what Carl was reaching for.
Part 2: Bordello of Blood came to be. Another movie was supposed to be made in it's place but the machinations of Hollywood turned and suddenly everything changed. They had a script called Fat Tuesday, a psychological thriller which was changed to Dead Easy. Gil had no interest in directing Demon Knight, so Ernest Dickerson was brought in. And Gil planned to direct Dead Easy afterward, set in Louisiana and got the green light from Universal and while scouting locations for weeks, the plug was pulled and it was decided that Bordello of Blood would be done in it's place. Then Steven Spielberg started Dreamworks and because of fear of losing Robert Zemeckis, the studio made a deal, which included buying a student script that Zemekis actually cowrote, for a ton of money and they ended up using that script that turned out to be Bordello of Blood. They had 3 weeks to rewrite and start shooting. With the making of this movie, they became pawns to everything. And not in Louisiana but in Canada. And instead of Bridget Wilson they got Erika Eliniak as the female lead. Al and Gil they wanted Robin Givens as the villain but, the boss, Joel Silver, cast, then Sylvester Stallone's soon to be ex fiancée, Angie Everhart instead. A part written for Daniel Baldwin was replaced with Dennis Miller by Joel, who improved all of his lines and didn't even want to be in the movie. But he got a million bucks to do it. Bordello was doomed from the very beginning. They were thwarted until the bitter end and by then, Al and Gil's friendship and business partnership was over. In this episode of the Roald Dahl Retrospective, Patricia, Arun, and special guests Jim Bevan and James "Jaimetud" Sullivan discuss about the 2020 film Roald Dahl's The Witches, which is based on the 1982 book The Witches written by Robert Zemekis, Guillermo del Toro, and Kenya Barris and directed by Zemekis. It stars Jahzir Kadeem Bruno, Octavia Spencer, Anne Hathaway, Stanley Tucci, Codie-Lei Eastick, Kristen Chenoweth, and Chris Rock. The film takes place in Demopolis, Alabama in 1968 where a young boy had lost his parents in a car accident and is sent to live with his grandmother. A witch approaches him at the local corner store and they relocate at a grand hotel to hide from them not knowing that a witch convention is being held there. The boy turns into a mouse and meets with a boy named Bruno who also got turned into a mouse and the boy's pet mouse named Mary who went through a similar fate. It's up to them to stop the witches from turning all the children into mice. Can they defeat them? Will they be able to turn back into human? The movie was originally suppose to air in theaters, but due to COVID-19, it was released on HBO Max. It's currently the lowest graded Roald Dahl adaptation on Rotten Tomatoes at 49% with critics stating that the film was nowhere near as frightening or engaging compared to the 1990 version. How do they feel about it? Listen and find out. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/old-school-lane/support

[Digital Gonzo 2010] After last week's brain-melting discussion on theoretical time travel we take more of a look at the movie's production, the hurdles that Bob's Zemekis and Gale had to leap to get this sequel made, the nightmarish tangent universe and the fascinating occurance, unique to this film alone, of going back to the events of the original and expanding upon them. This is possibly the least beloved of the BTTF trilogy and we're here to talk about why it might be the most clever and inventive of the bunch.
