Fismes is a small town on the Aisne, close to its neighbour Fismette and divided by the Vesle river. Here in the summer of 1918 men of the American 28th Division took part in a bitter battle for possession of its houses and the bridge over the Vesle, a story retold in possibly the greatest American memoir of the First World War: Toward the Flame by Hervey Allen. Here too a memorial bridge was built commemorating their sacrifice, just a dozen years before Europe went to war once more. Got a question about this episode or any others? The Last Fall: Private Henry Gunther and the Final Hours of WWI This script narrates the story of Private Henry Gunther, the last American - and Allied - soldier to be killed in World War I just one minute before the ceasefire at 1059 AM on November 11, 1918. Hailing from Baltimore and with German roots, Gunther was trying to redeem himself after being demoted due to a letter he wrote discouraging the war. He was honored posthumously with the rank of sergeant, the Divisional Citation for Gallantry in Action, and the Distinguished Service Cross. The script also alludes to the tragic fact that over 11,000 Allied soldiers died between the signing of the armistice and the cessation of hostilities as French Commander in Chief Marshal Foch didn't allow a ceasefire. In this context, the death toll was even higher than that on D-Day during World War II. 00:29 The Final Battle01:27 Gunther's Last Stand03:15 The Tragic End03:46 Posthumous Recognition04:10 Gunther's Life Before the War04:23 The Last Day of the War: A Closer Look04:56 The Unnecessary Losses
The US entered WWI after the Zimmermann Telegram was intercepted by the British where Germany asked Mexico to join the War against the US. US entering the War turned the tide in favor of the Allies as battle fatigue started overpowering Germany and Russia. Russia saw the Czar abdicating while Germany saw its sailors refusing to fight. The War ended with Germany signing an armistice agreement with the Allies on November 11, 1918. During the course of the war, women employment reached a peak due to labor shortage as a big chunk of the labor force was fighting on the frontlines.

As the Delta variant rages across the United States, hospitals are filling up with unvaccinated patients. Americans are suffering and dying needlessly, because the country has enough doses to vaccinate every eligible person. But the pathogen has allies: right-wing fanatics on cable TV who sow mistrust in life-saving inoculations, social media charlatans pushing quack cures, and plain old stubbornness, laziness, ignorance, or complacency among the citizenry. Historian John Barry, author of 'The Great Influenza: The Story of the Deadliest Pandemic in History,' returns to the podcast to talk about Delta and the variants to come, the politics of pandemics, and reasons to be optimistic. Yes, optimistic!

When COVID-19 began to ravage the world, many health experts compared it to the 1918 Spanish Flu. What are the similarities? Nearly 100 years ago, the United States was nearing the end of the First World War. A strange illness appeared overseas that took out soldiers. Not long after, it came to America and created a pandemic the likes of which hadn't been seen for centuries. It was The Spanish Flu, a deadly contagious virus that no one was prepared for. How did our country respond? How did Detroit respond?
