Wendy's hair obsession started as a tween doing hair on herself and her mom and friends in hight school asked ‘'who does your hair''? In Jr College she stumbled upon Cosmetology in the course catalog which she thought could be cool. Knowing she would not have sanity being full time mom + working, Wendy put her career on pause for 16 years to raise her 3 boys ages 14-16-18 and has been back behind the chair FT for the past 2 years. Now, ‘'They don't even know if I'm at home or work and just text me whats for dinner?'' Always knowing she was going to go back (she just didn't know when) she went to the Long Beach hair show every year to keep up with trends. She's been licensed since 1999 and just opened her salon suite ''bespoke hair design'' in Irvine, CA. PRO TIPS:⭐️ hair is such a unique thingWhen you cut someones hair — 10 different people with same hairstyle it's going to look different ⭐️ a great mentor will build confidence WORDS OF WISDOM:
Katie wanted to be a hairstylist her whole life and fondly recalls shampooing her grandpas hair and slathering him in old spice and cold creme on her grandma's face. ''I'm very happy in my career, I love it, thankful + grateful!'' says Katie mom of 4 (ages 5, 8, 10, 16) ''It's been a great living for me and a blessing, wonderful clients + relationships + it's priceless.'' Some of her best memories + friends are from beauty school at The Original Aveda Institute in Minneapolis where she loved every second of it. Born + raised in MN and dumping hot buckets of water on her car with her baby on her hip to open the door dreaming of life in Florida, she decided ''let's not wait til we retire!'' She then worked very PT as shampoo assistant for 6mo in eve a couple hours ''when you're a mom of 4 you have goals/plans'' so she wondered if chair rental would be the way to go even though she didn't have 1 client and no knowledge of color line other than Aveda. Luckily the busy stylists gave her their overflow! Post-pandemic, with one goal in mind: ''how do I service my clients!?'' A divine connection led to her finding her dream space + landlord and was up and running in 2 weeks where she has been for 2 years now! PRO TIPS: ⭐️ Heated seat in car + Hot bath after work ⭐️ Get feet scanned; shoes are ugly but whatever ⭐️ Exercise, stretch, light weights ⭐️ You won't see me on Social Media... If you want to see me make an appointment! WORDS OF WISDOM:
''There's always very good money to be made in the industry and it's a really good side gig!'' says Lindsay, a recent Penn State graduate. As a full time Agronomist specializing in field crop production, so she works mostly outside (not BTC) consulting farmers. On weekends, you'll find her cordless clippers in hand working at Sport Clips in Mechanicsburg, PA. This girl is SMART! In college, she would do 20+ haircuts for frat guys.... because, in 9th grade when they ask you if you want to go to trade school and her friend (who's mom was a beautician) she said she YES! Some of her best memories were then made-- like getting 3rd place in state for Nails her Senior Year! She started doing hair with her license before she even graduated with her cosmetology degree from technical school and began working at Supercuts her summer before college then all 4 years through school! When Quinn was a teen growing up in LA, she tagged along to all her boyfriends mom's hair appointments always asking the owner, Lorenzo questions (which he loved answering). Then, she volunteered to work at Lorenzo's salon + became his assistant for 2 years after that before graduating + going to work at various tiny salons as a commission stylist + eventually inheriting a celebrity clientele from her mentor (and now best friend). But it wasn't always always glamourous doing hair in LA… before she was on Hollywood sets, going to Pamela Anderson's house or doing hair for a season on a reality show for a new salon opening ---she would do hair all day, bartend all night + blowdry hair at 6am for Glam Squad. Recruited by a salon in Washington state she left LA (where she said the dating scene is horrible) and moved to Seattle where she would meet her Canadian husband at a music festival and pursue a 1.5 year long distance relationship before getting married and moving to Edmonton, AB! After passing her exams to become licensed in Canada and rebuilding her clientele she realized ‘'being 30 and working for people sucked'' + went out on her own…. the next month the world shut down. Upon the 2nd lock down she started renovating a new and bigger space and re-opened in March 2021. Quenntessential Salon is now one of the 2022 ‘'Top 18'' Best Hair Salons in Edmonton! You'll find Quinn behind the chair 6 days a week…but, she always has a vacation planned — she likes to work hard and play hard! Two days a week she leaves ‘'early'' for tennis tennis + beach volleyball and saturdays she only takes 2 clients. PRO TIPS: #1 | key to being good at haircolor is not knowing only 1 color line; you'll learn new things from every line #2 | Brush up when you balayge #3 | work for free to get experience when you're in school FAVE TOOLS: Blow Dryer: GHD + Rusk Speed Freak (it's light, cheap + lasts) Flat Iron: GHD (for curls + waves too) FAVE PRODUCTS: Color: Nook Lightener: Nook Blue Bleaching Cream Styling Products: Starlight Blonde Serum + Onesta blowdry cream (cocktail before every blow dry) Icy Toner Formula: Nook .11 series is amazing and sometimes sliver additive or pinch of blue to get rid of orange WORDS OF WISDOM:
Former FT stylist, turned Business Coach for Stylist, Kim Kennedy is OBSESSED with HAIR + BUSINESS (when she's not listening to True Crime podcasts). She always envisioned teaching to be something she would do at the end of her career but when her coaching business took off it was ‘'scary fufilling''! Kim, a mom to a 2 + 7 year old, is an 18-Year Stylist and now helps other stylists create a successful career behind the chair that doesn't take over their life. She shares all the things she wished she knew and learned from hitting ''rock bottom'' burnout. She got resourceful and it paid off! Now, she teaches other moms to share their purpose and gifts and do what they love. Always a booth renter, Kim sttruggled first 8-10 years in her career and worked 2 jobs to pay bills; last 10 years worked at amazing salon. When she had a baby she didn't want to have a gap in her day sitting at the salon when she could have another client or be home with her baby. After realizing she had been ''emotionally discounting'' (not charging) $1000 in services per month, things changed when she treated it like biz. She new she couldn't go back to work part-time without the right systems in place. As a new mom working 3 days a week she doubled her previous full-time income! Now, her ''Next Level Stylist Academy'' changes the trajectory of stylist lives + their children! PRO TIPS #1 | Flat iron with a really long cord + easy to clean #2 | Once you have clients you have to keep them #3 | Pre-book clients #4 | Know your numbers; treat it like a business not a hobby #5 | Watch videos all the time FAVE TOOLS Color: Pravana + Redken Shades EQ Babyliss clippers + blow dryers Lightner: Schwarzkopf BLONDEME Extensions: Hair Compounds WORDS OF WISDOM
"When I went to beauty school it completely changed my life!'' says Nichole Farine, Owner of NC Hair Studio, Etna, PA. As a teen mom with a GED + a milllion jobs before starting beauty school she was looking into nursing school, hated it. Fascinated by haircutting she realized "I don't want to deal with you when you'r sick I to want to deal with you when you're happy/healthy + want to feel beautiful.'' So, in 2010 at 22 she went to beauty school + never looked back! Nichole believes we are all divinely guided + every single person on this earth has a purpose… 1 year later she opened her business where she now specializes in French Cutting + Balayage. She says Balayage is 100% different from what you've been taught for blonding or foiling. From the way you mix, stand, tools you use clay lightener is different! After taking a class at a hair show and applying (and being accepted), she became a Sunlights Balage Educator! As a hands-on Balyage educator, in 2020 her wheels got spinning…. ‘'How can I deliver my education anywhere in the world?'' and close the gap between a hands on clas and a ref refresher class at home where students can practice at their own pace. Education every single day at your fingertips and inspiring more people was her goal and ‘'The French Stylist Academy'' was conceived. ''No 2 stylists will ever paint alike because our visions are different''says Nicole who's mission is to get more people creative and stand in their own artistic vision using hand painted Balayage. From starting out to knowing nothing about Balayage to standing out on social media as a Balayage expert, Nichole teaches hands on Balyage along with the basics (of balayage and high-lights, low-lights, shading, melting) + put everything she knows into her 6 week live course with access for life. PRO TIPS: #1 | Pick a niche to build your confidence + expertise #2 | As an artist behind the chair you're going to evolve #3 | With social media you can reach anyone today #4 | Balayage lets you work fast + efficient; clients don't want to sit for 5 hrs! #5 | Being a successful hair stylist doesn't mean the number of years behind the chair, but it means your confidence level, how much education your willing to invest in yourself, that's what's going to set you apart + have you charge your worth. FAVE TOOLS: 7.5" french cutting shears Color: Matrix Lightner: Sunlights Styling: Living Proof; Crew WORDS OF WISDOM:

When I popped into Alizabeth's Salon, Hair with a Purpose in Lewisburg PA, I was so pleased to see a play mat on the floor and her babe on her lap… THIS IS WHY I RECORD THIS PODCAST! I want moms to know about this amazing industry that is perfect for being a working mom! She says lots of extra help friends + family make it possible. And she's even been able to go as far a Jamaica for a destination wedding! Her love for hair began her senior year of high school b/c her junior year she had enough credits to graduate so her guidance counselor suggested Sun Tech her Sr. year. She only wanted to do hair to get job doing hair while being in college to be a therapist then realized this was where she needed to be! 13 years later she now has her own salon with 2 stylists! Her first job was for 3.5 years at smart style at Walmart which she says it's great b/c people go for household items and think ‘'let me get a hair cut while I'm here'' they're not looking for perfection. When she named her salon she wanted a meaning with the name saying because ''it's not just about their hair'' she wants to meet their internal needs too. She says''if I can like just bring a little bit of sunshine to someone's day just from you know doing their hair like that's like such a that's a big deal to me.'' The name was solidified when she shared her idea with a client who began tearing up + said ''I've been searching for such a long time what my purpose in the world is!'' Alizabeth's mission to leave a positive impact on people and be a positive influence in their lives — is evident as she inspired one client to lose over 100lbs! PRO TIPS: #1 | Start at Smart Style + hone your craft (Because if you're going to Walmart to get your haircut you don't care about quality) #2 | Wand for brides can get through hair faster #3 | the consultation is everything; you have to hear what you're clients aren't saying #4 | For stacked bobs always pull hair back and to middle #5 | if you're not passionate about people don't do hair #6 | Network FAVE PRODUCTS: Color: was Matrix now Framesi WORKING SPRAY 14 by Kenra ULTRA FREEZE SPRAY 30 by Kenra when you don't want it to move STYLE FREESTYLE SPRAY by Keune is flexible + finishing AQUAGE FINISHING SPRAY for styling brides QUAGE Beyond Body Sealing Spray for setting a nice firm curl Styling treatment Oil by Paul Mitchell light weight for shine, heat protection + volume. On her 25th bday, Carolyn Keizl signed her lease (in the midst of the pandemic) and opened her gorgeous salon, The Hideaway Haverhill in the basement of her local gym in Haverhill, MA! About 6 years ago, in the beginning of her career, Carolyn was fortunate to find a NYC master stylist who moved ''back home'' to whom she assisted/apprenticed and learned everything from very classy to very edgy looks! When she hit the floor she felt it was time to find a new salon to grow at. Finding a new salon owned by 2 women who were not stylists, they filled her book and built a team of 7 stylists working 7 days a week! She enjoyed working there until she was ready to open her own salon... the very day she was going to announce leaving, the manager did too, unfortunately this didn't make for a peaceful exit. If you're in NE MA and looking for a new salon to call home, Carolyn is looking for booth renters! www.thehideawayhaverhill.com/join-the-team PRO TIPS: #1 | never use just 1 color; spice it up #2 | dirty wash- massage all the color in the sink before you rinse #3 | reduce prices so they come more often ie) $135 every 4 weeks for root color, face-framing foil, toner, wash + blow-dry #4 | charge hourly for soothing services (2hrs $199 + $50 per half hour extra) #5 | get a good blow-dry + round brush good FAVE TOOLS: Color: milkshake professional Toner: Redken Shades EQ 1'' flat iron 3/4'' curling iron (more look of 1'' barrel in hair that doesn't curl) WORDS OF WISDOM:
Growing up Sarah's mom didn't know how to manage wildly curly hair she got nicknamed Medusa in 4th grade by 5th grade neighbor. Sarah only went to beauty school as a back up plan to bartending + needing to learn how to do her own hair! Opening her own salon (a 14 mo. process) proceeded by a fire at her bar tending job wasn't the most ideal situation. She kept the salon open for 3.5 years before closing in 2017. In 2018, she finished Barber school and booth rented in downtown Savannah, GA for 3.5 years. Now, she is thrilled to be a Suite owner because ''If I'm not making money I'm the only one responsible for not making money! My clients feel more comfortable in 1:1 environment.'' Sarah is one of the most creative + wise women you will meet! Her energy + enthusiasm for her craft + clients (hello all 5-star reviews) is contagious! Kristin Speakman owns Bella Red, a commission salon in Federal Way, WA has humble beginnings. She didn't grow up wanting to be a stylist in fact, she didn't graduate like high school with a plan. With two aunts and an uncle that were hairstylist and salon owners and her mom working for them. She literally grew up in the salons and avoided them! Until one day her Aunt's salon for 36 years became hers! And in the past year she has found a new passion + calling, for coaching salon owners. She loves working with salon owners that are building teams, and that have stylists that work for them. If that's you, I'm pretty sure you want Kristin in your life! In this episode Kristin talks about what it was like moving to a 4-chair salon and hiring her first employee (who is still with her today) feeling like she didn't know what she was doing. Yet, it was the beginning of what would become a way to build a beautiful team of dedicated stylists! She knew she wanted to create something different, a better culture one that focuses on the stylists as a whole person, not just an employee! ''People are humans, we need to like approach our development and supporting our stylists and our managers in a, in a real authentic like, human human way'' she says. She believes change your hair change your life! And she believes if you're a hairdresser to change your life you build a luxruy brand and get more clients, more money and live the life you love with work-life balance. This episode is jam packed with pure gold be ready to take notes! If you want to change your life and make triple money take action don't overthink. If you want to have more time with your kids, start now and use the steps today! Below I've outlined her 8-step process for going from dark to blonde in one session... Consultation - Be very clear where the expectation of them are if they want too much but they want to pay less it won't happen Technique Section - (how thick) when they put their hair up how to do section for when they put it up to look nice. How do you make them feel good with it up or down? #1 fringe #2 both sides #3 back Application Time - Asian vs Western hair depends how thick of section you do need to know rough guideline Formula - Bleach formula is important - where it's not light enough turns brassy (you run out of time) start low depends how long it takes to do application. if it takes you 2hr start with 5vol or 10 vol with asian. Every 20 min change peroxide Treatment - After I rinse out how can I make her hair in better condition before I do toner. Some of my clients say so much better smoother and shinier than when I walked in ''what did you do how? I can't believe it!'' I know how to make their hair better condidtion and i do it. Toner - It doesn't matter how amazing technique you do if it's spotty or brassy a lot of blue and purple to take away brassy and make nice blend Words of Wisdom: The more you take action, The more you fail, The more you learn! Bored with the 1 or 2 (maybe 3) ponytails her mom would do on her as a 7 year old, she asked her mom if she could do her own hair.... And she let me go to school with about 10 different ponytails all different colors. The rest was history! Kim always loved doing hair. When she went away college, she did her friends hair. But, after 5 years + 3 colleges with no degree Kim decided to go to beauty school for a year and loving it ever since.... nearly 25 years later! She now has 3 degrees: Business Management from University of the District of Columbia and Bachelor + Masters in Professional National Beauty Culturists' League. Ms. Kim shares how she gives her clients a 5-star experience with the reviews to boot. Pro Tip #1: The ''typewriter method'' shampoo cover every inch of the head!p Pro Tip #2: You don't have to try to take all the clients. Refer clients to people who specialize in areas you don't ie) braiding or sleek ponytails on natural hair Pro Tip #3: You can't please everybody. Pro Tip #4: Make your clients feel special on their Birthday.... surprise them with balloons, flowers + card when they're under the dryer Words of Wisdom: God is good, he's real, keep on living and everything will work out Obsessed with: Beautifying people. Color Educator + Salon Owner, Elaine Travis has been doing hair for 35+ years! But, gone are Elaine's days of coming in early, staying late, working on days off + lunch to see 15 clients a day! For 17 years, she owned a traditional salon before having a brilliant (not so brilliant) idea of opening a 2nd location and cut the ties with all the services she didn't like doing and specialized in color which she was always obsessed with. She has since transitioned to online business + education --- feeling a little guilty because Covid (2020) was a great year because online education piece was in place. Now, she mentors 300 members--- not a single one fresh out of school! Hairdressers don't retire they die and Elaine loves sharing her experiences with people who are still in it! Pro-Tips: 1. You have to plan for holes/ruts! Don't do bridal hair because every single cycle 4-6 weeks you have a dead day with bridal party because you're not booking brides every 6 weeks. 2. Be choosy about who is in your chair and do what you love 3. Naturalize it — turn it into a color that can be corrected ie) orange on blue direct dye. Sometimes we panic and throw bleach on things when not necessary. Knowledge is power! Loves this career because: Of all my friends I was the happiest and made the most money! Lisa, a stylist at The Rage in Brownwood TX, has been doing hair for 22 years and has big dreams of having a cozy salon + boutique at her home where she can be close to the foster kids she has a huge calling in her heart for! You'll hear her mad-scientist method for removing 20 years of Sally's black box dye from a clients hair. Pro Marketing Tip: Tell people go find me on Facebook, find the hair album, view my work, you can see everything! Pro Tool Tip: True sharp scissor is you're not supposed to hear the hair cutting. It is supposed to be a silent swipe. And if your scissors are sharp enough, it will be silent, it will cut silently. Obsessed with: Sharing what she knows + learns with anybody that wants it to be a better hairdresser p.s. there is an F-bomb half-way thru the episode when Lisa tells a story about an irate client when she was first starting out as a young stylist and made an opps _______________________________ Want to start your own podcast? Emily, a hair stylist assistant at Barnette's Salon, "Named One of The TOP 100 Salons in The Country" (Elle Magazine). She is young, determined, driven + you're going to love her sweet southern accent + bubbly personality as she shares what it's like to be a brand-new cosmetologist who finished school during Covid. Her superpower? ''I haven't been doing it for six months yet but just try to be the nicest person you can because even if you like mess up on the hair, like just a little bit like just a little bit if you're nice they'll come back to you. YIt's really about selling the experience and not just about the hair.'' Her inspiration for cosmetology school? Her friend Taylor who earned $40 in tips during Cosmo School made her think ''I want to get paid to go to school!!!!" Having no idea she'd go from homeschooling her junior and senior year of high school because she just I couldn't stand actually going to real school to falling in love with her hair career ''just out here like living my best life while my friends from high school are still in college.'' Emily's highlight hack: A lot of people in this world who cannot handle a platinum card. They think they can but they can't. And so I like to do baby lights on the top. That way you get as much blonde as possible while still being healthy. And I tend we learned in school to do three sections in the back, but I only do two. And I do you start in the back because the hair process is faster on the top of the head, which you're also not taught in school. I like doing a halo weave. So you you do the highlights, like in the halo part of the head. And that way, they also get highlights in the back end, the front was still using the same amount of lightener as a partial.
