We read and hear a lot these days about how actors need to be their own producers and creating their own work. In my own career about the only thing I'm creating are self-tapes, which are truly productions in and of themselves for sure--based on all the requirements and props and lines and technical aspects that are required to just put together a one-minute audition. But actually writing producing directing starring in our own work is a daunting task, so I wanted to talk to someone who is not only doing this, but helps those of us novices do it for ourselves. Learn more at the Pickford West Society For the past 15 years, Emily Grace has been helping actors create success on our own terms. And she comes out at not from a writing or producing angle, but as an actress herself. She even won an award at Sundance, a special jury prize for emotional truth. That's something we all want to bring to our work, right? So in this episode, Emily shares not only her own experiences in front of the camera, but what she has learned behind the camera as well, and how each of us can discover our own strengths and weaknesses, as we venture beyond acting.  INTRO - Catching the acting bug from her failed Annie audition STORY #1 - Smoking in a scene as a non-smoker and frustrating her director STORY #2 - The pressures of investor readings and what she learned from Judith Ivey STORY #3 - Why she branched out into making her own work and how she helps others Subscribe or Donate to WINMI Producing this podcast is a rewarding experience, but it's also costly and time-consuming as I'm essentially a one-man operation. The topic of relationships come up often in my conversations on Camera Ready & Abel. This is no surprise since media and entertainment are relationship-driven industries. People like to work with people they know and trust to to get the work done on time, on budget and well executed. It's also a fact that media and entertainment are referral driven businesses, and people recommend people they know, like, and trust. So I've pulled together a best-of featuring snippets from my conversations with Emily Grace, J.D. Durkin, Buki Elegbede, and Matthew Hoffman who all advanced their careers in MAJOR ways by nurturing relationships that turned into opportunities because of the people who knew them.  Career coach and Sundance award-winning actress, Emily Grace, tells us how she got her break as an actor, in the role that won her the award at Sundance, without an agent! J.D. Durkin, host and reporter at the New York Stock Exchange for the financial news site The Street who previously created the Washington Bureau for Cheddar News when he was their White House correspondent explains how he came to Washington as an outsider with zero contacts and developed key relationships by being patient and doing simple things that no one else seemed to be doing. Television host, producer and journalist, Buki Elegbede, moved from behind the camera to in front when he won PBS' Create Cooking Challenge and it was the relationships that were formed there that helped launch him to the next level and create Table For All with Buki Elegbede which was nominated for multiple Emmy awards this year! TV host, media personality and popular narrator, Matthew Hoffman, got his big break when he was invited to audition to be the official narrator of the US version of the UK TV smash Love Island. Matthew was competing with household name talent and felt there was absolutely no way he was ever going to book the job, but he was so honored to be invited to audition that he decided to go all out for it, not to get hired, but to maintain his relationship with the casting team and production company so that they would call him again for the next opportunity. Matthew's story inspires me every time I listen to it. Matthew, like Buki, knows his being industrious is a superpower. My conversations with Emily, J.D., Buki, and Matthew are bound together by the phrase, Relationships: It's Who Knows You!  If you are looking for help tapping into your super-powers and advancing your career, I am here for you! Susan, your host, welcomes Emily Grace. Emily started her career as a shy people-pleaser who overworked to prove her worth in the world and relied on others for validation and approval. Now, she is a leading international feminine embodiment coach, living from her authentic, feminine self. She is proof that your sensitivity and femininity can be your greatest superpowers if you learn to embrace them.   Having navigated her own internal struggles (including PTSD, grief, depression & anxiety & addiction), she now helps other women do the same, especially through challenging transitions. She guides women to trust themselves, to honor their value, to process their emotions in a safe environment, and to embody their purpose. The result is an authentic embodiment of self.   Emily saw how so many high-achieving, sensitive women were letting their sensitive, emotional side of themselves hold them back in their lives and careers as they tried to fit themselves into masculine templates for success and leadership. Emily created systems to support women in unsubscribing from these ways of being and instead creating their own lane for success. Through her signature program Reclaim, online courses, books, and retreats, Emily has helped hundreds of women reclaim their true selves, embody their wholeness, embrace their sensitivity and femininity as gifts, and honor their soul's calling. She is certified in trauma-sensitive feminine embodiment coaching, integrative wellness life coaching, aromatherapy, and breathwork facilitation.   Emily is also a sought-after speaker, the author of Wholeness Within: Insights from One Woman's Journey of Creating a Life and Career in Alignment, and the podcast host of Guide to Wholeness.    Key Takeaways: Emily shares her grief story that began with the death of her father, with whom she had a complicated relationship. Pay attention to your feelings and emotions arising through your grief, identify them, and feel them. You can pay it forward in many ways; you don't have to have a coaching certificate. Every grief is different; there is no better or worse grief or death. Grievers often feel they are doing it wrong. Be kind to yourself, give yourself a break, and let your feelings be! Healthy boundaries also mean not holding space for certain people and walking away from relationships that are not serving you anymore. Susan addresses the different layers of grief and the many losses involved, including some friendships. Breathwork helps to feel and clear emotions and also to get you closer to your intuition. Forgiveness is crucially important in your healing process, leading you to be more of your authentic self. Make space for your grief, and create a ritual around it.   Resources Tendrilsofgrief.com Email Susan: susan@tendrilsofgrief.com If you find this episode helpful, please donate.   Meet Emily Grace Visit Grace's Website, Guide to Wholeness, and her work as a Medium. So I'm going to guess you've noticed that we've been talking a lot about writing and content creation here on the podcast lately. So it's the perfect time to bring back this episode with Emily Grace. If you are a writer and an actor and you're trying to propel your career forward with content that you're creating on your own, there are a lot of traps that you can fall into where you waste time, energy and money with making stuff that won't actually propel your career forward. So this replay is a cautionary tale… I'm just gonna come out and say it, – DO NOT WRITE YOUR OWN CONTENT… Well, not until you listen to this episode! Because even though you've got the best of intentions, chances are you'll make a rookie mistake: You won't write the right character to showcase you & your talents.  I hear you thinking: "Ummmmm, excuse me, Brian! I know a thing or two about scripts, I'm an actor, I look at them all day."  That right there is the very reason you'll make this mistake. Today's guest Emily Grace walks us through creating content from the lightbulb moment to breaking the process down into small, actionable steps. No, like for real... She really realllllllly breaks it down so that it doesn't feel overwhelming!  Plus she teaches us a reliable, failsafe hack to ensure you write stories that actually highlight your talent and attract the right attention in the bizniz.  Oh, and we breakdown the entire plot of one of my favorite movies – The Devil Wears Prada.  Emily Grace is an expert at helping actors get their damn scripts done. It takes courage to put yourself out there and today's guest helps actors create their own projects.  Tune in to learn: The BIG mistakes actors make when it comes to writing TRUTH TIME: Just because you are good at breaking down a script doesn't mean that you are good at writing a character fit for you How storytelling is a catalyst for change    Thank you for tuning in to this episode of Brian Breaks Character! Emily Grace is a career coach and Sundance award winning actress who helps actors finally write their damn script already and know what to do with it. Do you have an interest in writing a script but just don't know where to start? I loved Emily's technique of creating a Character Square. In her free video, she breaks down everything you need to know to start writing right now. She even breaks down the first scene in The Devil Wears Prada so we could understand the wants and needs and conflicts of the protagonist and antagonist. I'm just gonna come out and say it, – DO NOT WRITE YOUR OWN CONTENT… Well, not until you listen to this episode! Tune in to learn: The BIG mistakes actors make when it comes to writing TRUTH TIME: Just because you are good at breaking down a script doesn't mean that you are good at writing a character fit for you.  How storytelling is a catalyst for change  Thank you for tuning in to this episode of Brian Breaks Character! We never want to see our children suffer. It hurts us to the core because we want our child's life to be pain-free, perfect, happy. But when they face medical challenges, it is heartbreaking and devastating. When Em was 3.5 years, she was diagnosed with Stage IV Neuroblastoma and was given a short time to live. Fast forward, she is now 14 years old. Yay! Her mom, Tara Geraghty, joins me in the studio this week to share how she made the journey fun for both of them. Emily, a hair stylist assistant at Barnette's Salon, "Named One of The TOP 100 Salons in The Country" (Elle Magazine). She is young, determined, driven + you're going to love her sweet southern accent + bubbly personality as she shares what it's like to be a brand-new cosmetologist who finished school during Covid. Her superpower? ''I haven't been doing it for six months yet but just try to be the nicest person you can because even if you like mess up on the hair, like just a little bit like just a little bit if you're nice they'll come back to you. YIt's really about selling the experience and not just about the hair.'' Her inspiration for cosmetology school? Her friend Taylor who earned $40 in tips during Cosmo School made her think ''I want to get paid to go to school!!!!" Having no idea she'd go from homeschooling her junior and senior year of high school because she just I couldn't stand actually going to real school to falling in love with her hair career ''just out here like living my best life while my friends from high school are still in college.'' Emily's highlight hack: A lot of people in this world who cannot handle a platinum card. They think they can but they can't. And so I like to do baby lights on the top. That way you get as much blonde as possible while still being healthy. And I tend we learned in school to do three sections in the back, but I only do two. And I do you start in the back because the hair process is faster on the top of the head, which you're also not taught in school. I like doing a halo weave. So you you do the highlights, like in the halo part of the head. And that way, they also get highlights in the back end, the front was still using the same amount of lightener as a partial.
