Growing up in a family restaurant, Giovanni Vaccaro was accustomed to the hospitality industry, but at a young age he realized that he was destined for a different type of hospitality. An experience at a hair salon watching the transformation women underwent in the chairs from slouching to smiling after a beauty treatment left him feeling that this was a world he needed to be a part of. While Gio knew where he wanted to be, how to get there was a different story. Gio tells us of a moment that changed everything: a recruiter from a top salon had come to his cosmetology school-here was an opportunity staring him in the face. He knew that putting himself out there would be risky, uncomfortable even, but the pay off? That could be huge. So he went for it, he asked for a job. And it worked! Gio landed a job as a shampoo assistant at renowned salon Frederic Fekkai & Co and showed that he was willing to start small and work hard.Fast-forward and Gio knows the business inside & out and saw that the industry was changing, but not in a way that supported the beauty pros. He thought “why not treat the beauty professional like the client?” From there Gio and his partner David Goldweitz built Glamsquad to be a hospitality-first brand for beauty professionals to book opportunities for events, fashion weeks, shows, photo shoots and more. For more on Gio's career journey and to find out the beauty of the “bro-walk” listen to Giovanni's episode wherever you get your podcasts!

"My daughter is in third grade. I'm getting trashed on Facebook because I hired a Glam Squad for her school pictures. I'm getting a makeup artist, a manicurist, a stylist and a hairstylist to work on her at school before her picture gets taken. Other parents are jealous and are slamming me saying what I'm doing is unnecessary and more for me than her. I can afford it and it's my money so why should they care. They say I'm a bad mother because I'm placing more emphasis on what's on the outside rather than the inside. I think if you feel good on the outside you'll feel good on the inside. Am I wrong for hiring a Glam Squad for a third grader?"See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

*At the time of this interview, Amy Shecter was the CEO of Glamsquad. She is now the CEO of Ever/Body.* How would your life be different if you were less afraid to make mistakes, to “fail”? Amy Shecter doesn't think women let themselves fail enough, and she thinks it's high time we become less risk-averse. Statistically, she says, women will only take risks when they feel 95-100% confident in a favorable outcome, versus the average man, who will take the same risk at only 50% confidence. And what, really, is there to lose? Most of the time a supposed failure simply means you're that much closer to the next success. Amy spent years in fashion and footwear before delving into the world of fitness and beauty. She immediately saw it as an expanding consumer market. Now the CEO of Glamsquad, a company that brings hair, nail and makeup artists to your door, Amy finds excitement not only in great products and services for clients, but also in the fact that Glamsquad gives freelance beauty professionals a platform to support themselves. On this episode of DTC Pod, Alexandra joins Blaine and Ramon to talk about company building. They cover the creation of Gilt, building early demand, sourcing supply, creating a marketplace, the evolving commerce landscape, team building, the overlap between commerce and services marketplaces, understanding your ICP and working backward, how she invests, why she loves Miami, and much more.49:00We were not a big company. We were just kind getting going and pulled this off. So I think startups, sometimes I hear founders be like, well, I don't really have budgets to do creative things. And you can be guerilla marketing, tactical, boots on the streets doing clever things with fewer dollars than one thinks they might need.55:00 I smile because I'm like, yeah, I've been there. I I remember when I had migraines every day for six months in the early days of GILT because I was so stressed. Yes, I remember that. it's very, it's very real. And so I think founders appreciate that I've spent more time in my career on their side than the current side. But that also sometimes makes me tougher because I'm like, wait what do you mean you're going on vacation all the time? Or what do you mean you're turning your phone off or you're not hustling?60:00 So I don't know how to do something not as part of a team. I think it's super important where nobody's good at everything, and it's so important to know what are your superpowers? What are you good at? What do you enjoy doing? And, and answer that question for every co-founder or your early team members. And one of the reasons Gilt worked really well, and all my partnerships, I think because there was clarity. It was just obvious who does what and, and who's in charge of what. Then, she volunteered to work at Lorenzo's salon + became his assistant for 2 years after that before graduating + going to work at various tiny salons as a commission stylist + eventually inheriting a celebrity clientele from her mentor (and now best friend). But it wasn't always always glamourous doing hair in LA… before she was on Hollywood sets, going to Pamela Anderson's house or doing hair for a season on a reality show for a new salon opening ---she would do hair all day, bartend all night + blowdry hair at 6am for Glam Squad. Recruited by a salon in Washington state she left LA (where she said the dating scene is horrible) and moved to Seattle where she would meet her Canadian husband at a music festival and pursue a 1.5 year long distance relationship before getting married and moving to Edmonton, AB! After passing her exams to become licensed in Canada and rebuilding her clientele she realized ‘'being 30 and working for people sucked'' + went out on her own…. the next month the world shut down. Upon the 2nd lock down she started renovating a new and bigger space and re-opened in March 2021. Quenntessential Salon is now one of the 2022 ‘'Top 18'' Best Hair Salons in Edmonton! You'll find Quinn behind the chair 6 days a week…but, she always has a vacation planned — she likes to work hard and play hard! Two days a week she leaves ‘'early'' for tennis tennis + beach volleyball and saturdays she only takes 2 clients. PRO TIPS: #1 | key to being good at haircolor is not knowing only 1 color line; you'll learn new things from every line #2 | Brush up when you balayge #3 | work for free to get experience when you're in school FAVE TOOLS: Blow Dryer: GHD + Rusk Speed Freak (it's light, cheap + lasts) Flat Iron: GHD (for curls + waves too) FAVE PRODUCTS: Color: Nook Lightener: Nook Blue Bleaching Cream Styling Products: Starlight Blonde Serum + Onesta blowdry cream (cocktail before every blow dry) Icy Toner Formula: Nook .11 series is amazing and sometimes sliver additive or pinch of blue to get rid of orange WORDS OF WISDOM:

We often use the expression, "think beyond the chair", when talking about the potential that hairstylists have for financial success. Our guest today, Gio Vaccaro, did just that when he founded Glamsquad in 2014; an on-demand styling service connecting beauty pros with clients (much like Uber and Airbnb but for blow-outs and manicures). Glamsquad has grown to be an incredibly successful business and Gio teaches us from his own trial and error how he was able to create a business outside industry norms, how being a hairstylist positioned him for security and success as a startup founder, how he sets values and goals for his company, and much more. This episode is our Season One Finale! We'll return later this year with Season Two. This episode we talk with the hosts of the popular Topa Talk podcast, which is in its third season and closing in on 100 episodes. Stephanie St. James and Cody Creighton have been delighting and informing their listeners with topics like Ojai's boutique wars, racial protests, coffee shops and hot takes on pop culture. Lots of hot takes. Plus they are Ojai's top Halloween enthusiasts. Besides the engaging and often hilarious subject matter of this podcast, we also wade into the thicket of issues around what Ojai lacks, what makes it great, and dive deep into issues that divide us such as age, gender, politics and identity. We discover that we have a lot more in common than you might think. Plus lots of hot takes on the crucial substantive matter of Erika Gerardi's aggressive bullying of fellow castmembers of the Real Housewives of Beverly Hills. What about the defrauded widows and orphans, Erika? Did you think that the money to pay the Glam Squad was earned honestly? We did not talk about Lou "Iron Man" Gehrig, Sen. Mitch McConnell or Ice Road Truckers. You can check out the Topa Talk podcast wherever you catch your pods or on Instagram at @topatalk.

For Amy Shecter, CEO of Glamsquad, the handshake is full of meaning. She has observed throughout her career—working with major brands such as Lady Foot Locker, Diesel, Donna Karan, Cole Haan and Tory Burch—how much is revealed in the way someone shakes hands…and how it's something that boys are raised to know about but girls are not. She observes, “How you shake a hand indicates how you feel about yourself and how you feel about the job.” She believes that when someone has a firm handshake, stands tall and looks you in the eye, they project confidence. As she grows Glamsquad, the on-demand hair, make-up and nail beauty service and product line, she's always mentoring, teaching and helping her team to develop the skills and experience they need to move into leadership positions. While she loves her current role, she always has her eye on the bigger picture of helping people—including herself—to thrive professionally while being fulfilled personal, embracing the lessons of a handshake all along the way.
