1/3 of Women Worry That Disclosing Female Health Issues at Work Could Negatively Impact Their Careers

Irish Tech News Audio Articles

Research released today by Irish Life Health reveals that one-third of women are fearful of negative career repercussions if they disclose female health-related issues at work. The research reveals that almost one-third of women (29%) take sick leave to cope with female health issues, with almost 1 in 5 choosing to take annual leave for this reason. Young women, aged 16 - 34, are much more negatively impacted, with almost half taking sick leave (43%) and one-third (31%) taking unpaid leave to manage female health concerns. Workplace support is a key priority for women, with close to half of women surveyed (44%) stating they would consider moving to a new organisation if it offered better female health supports. However, the research reveals that just 1 in 3 employers (34%) have dedicated policies in place to address female health needs, and fewer than half (41%) of women feel that they get sufficient support from their employers. Many women report female health issues at different stages of life, such as menstrual health challenges, fertility difficulties and perimenopause or menopause issues. These female health issues directly affect some women's ability to work, with 46% citing difficulties related to menstrual health, 38% reporting challenges due to fertility issues, and one-third acknowledging that symptoms associated with perimenopause or menopause impact their work performance. Speaking about these findings, Ann Marie Nestor, Managing Director, Irish Life Health, said: "At Irish Life Health, we are committed to supporting women throughout their health journey, whether at home or at work. The findings on women's health in the workplace are concerning - despite making up half of the adult population, many women still feel uncomfortable discussing their health concerns at work, often fearing a negative impact on their careers. The evidence is clear, supporting women with their health needs is essential. "As we continue to enhance our benefits, addressing the unique health challenges faced by women remains a priority. Irish Life Health is proud to be the first and only health insurer to offer customers direct access to a range of specialist female health services, including a network of GPs who specialise in female health, a new at home female fertility assessment from Hertility, and full cover for an initial consult with a female pelvic health physio. "We are also delighted that Irish Life Health will be at this year's WellFest event, sponsoring the 'WellFem' tent where people can find out more about female health supports and chat with the team of experts about their specific health concerns." Commenting on the findings, Dr. Máire Finn, GP specialising in female health, states: "The findings from this research clearly highlight the issues women face when it comes to female health. I welcome the opportunity to meet with women at the 'WellFem' tent at WellFest to discuss all areas of female health and hopefully break down some of the taboos, unfortunately still associated with female health issues. I would encourage anyone who is interested in learning more about female health or looking for advice to pop down and speak to one of the many experts who are on site all weekend." The Irish Life Health WellFem tent is a brand-new addition to this year's WellFest, dedicated to women's health and offering expert advice, insightful panel discussions, and opportunities to speak with leading female health experts throughout the weekend. Panel discussions will take place across the weekend with Deirdre O'Neill, Hertility, Aoife Harvey, women's health physio, Dr Márie Finn, GP specialising in female health, and the founders of Herology, Dr. Michelle Hone and Dr. Sarah Kelly. After decades of pursuing public health policies to reduce unintended pregnancies in South Carolina, New Morning President & CEO Bonnie Kapp had a bold idea. What if we made birth control available at little to no cost in every community, in every county, for every person with a uterus in South Carolina, regardless of health insurance coverage? What if we did this against a backdrop of relentless political attacks on reproductive rights and a weak healthcare infrastructure, where 30% of counties have no OB/GYN providers, the average distance to a family medicine practitioner is 37 miles, and 29 of 46 counties in the state are 100% medically underserved? Against these odds, Choose Well was established in 2017. Choose Well works across a network of 119 health centers to provide free or low-cost birth control across South Carolina. In just four years, it has become the largest state-based contraceptive access program in the nation. Today on the podcast to talk about the impressive program are New Morning Foundation's President and CEO, Bonnie Kapp, and Chief Operating Officer, Sarah Kelly. Bonnie and Sarah discuss the backdrop of historical and contemporary barriers to reproductive health access in South Carolina, how the Choose Well program works and has managed to serve over 300,000 South Carolinians to date, what challenges they've encountered, and what lessons they've learned that can be applied to other states in the fight for equitable, comprehensive contraceptive access. They went home sterilized. The story of immigrant mothers who sued county doctors, the state, and the US government after they were pushed into sterilizations while giving birth at the Los Angeles County-USC Medical Center during the 1960s and 70s. Led by an intrepid, 26-year-old Chicana lawyer and armed with hospital records secretly gathered by a whistle-blowing young doctor, the mothers faced public exposure and stood up to powerful institutions in the name of justice. FILM: Belly of the Beast, 2020 documentary film:When a courageous young woman and a radical lawyer discover a pattern of illegal sterilizations in California's women's prisons, they wage a near-impossible battle against the Department of Corrections. With a growing team of investigators inside prison working with colleagues on the outside, they uncover a series of statewide crimes - from inadequate health care to sexual assault to coercive sterilizations - primarily targeting women of color. This shocking legal drama captured over 7 years features extraordinary access and intimate accounts from currently and formerly incarcerated people, demanding attention to a shameful and ongoing legacy of eugenics and reproductive injustice in the United States.

Welcome back everyone! Riley and I have been looking forward to this episode for quite a while now. This week we talk with Rebecca and her father Sarah Kelly. Sara Kelly  is a transgender woman and the father of three wonderful children. She has known since she was a toddler but growing up in the 50s and 60s she often felt isolated and alone not knowing anyone like her. Years after her wife's passing and decades after suppressing her true self, Sarah Kelly finally decided to come out and freely be herself. We talk: still being referred to as “dad”, how Sarah came out to her friends and family, how Sarah's transition began, how this journey has been for Rebecca, and how to be a supportive person when someone comes out as transgender. We also answer a ton of listener questions!  It was an absolute pleasure to talk to with these two women and witness the love and acceptance that is so present within this father and daughter duo.
