A mainstay of Winnipeg radio airwaves for three decades, Paul Edmonds was the voice of the Goldeyes baseball team before taking over play-by-play duties for the Winnipeg Jets in 2014. For the holiday weekend, TGCTS presents a Sports Special with one of the best sportscasters in the country for Episode 7.2.40- The team he covers is at the top of the NHL standings, and Paul Edmonds has some special insight into what the team is doing right. He discusses how dealing with pro athletes has changed over the years, and the reasons why you just don't hear about the free-spirit and outspoken types like Tricky Dicky Thornton that used to make off-the-field headlines years ago. Corporate ownership, social media, and modern travel schedules have affected it, so earning the trust of the players is key to be able to tell their stories. We touch on a legendary Marble Club story about some Montreal Canadiens.19.10- In Part 2 of our discussion Paul describes how not all interviews go well, and as a broadcaster you learn from them. He tells about a couple of situations with NHL greats Joe Sakic and Mike Babcock. The foundation was laid in his days at Red River College by "some old heavyweights" and he explains how influential our friend Brian Smiley was when he began his career covering the Western Hockey League. 26.50- Paul Edmonds says "I'm a by-product" of the rich tradition of Winnipeg sports broadcasters - "a wealth of broadcasting luminaries" - and some inspired the development of his pacing and style. 31.00- Some word association about old-time Winnipeg sports and media figures, and which athletes he met that made him turn 'fanboi' in their presence. It happens to all of us!Paul Edmonds: "You never forget those people that helped you along the way."******The Season Six funding campaign has received our first contribution, even before we kicked it off!We will be revealing the fundraising target soon. Opening Episode 7 of 2023 - we touch on the popularity of our recent podcasts, spiking towards the top of the charts with our most-heard civic election coverage. 5:30 Why Marty has always represented a different point of view about the local media and the way stories are covered: the lessons he learned in the 1980's from community leaders like Yoram Hamizrachi and Nick Ternette. They understood the terrain and with his own experiences as a taxi driver he gained insight into the way media reports on stories. After describing his rise as a spokeman for drivers, you'll hear... 7:37 Rare audio from CKY-TV news 30 years ago: Kelly Dehn takes a cab ride. Hear him talk about a cabbie murder in 1989 and finding out why the authorities didn't have any urge to investigate what went wrong. 9:00 Taxi safety was big news in the late 80's and early 90's. Marty recalls the issues from shields to violence (just like buses in the present day!), and recites the names of reporters at CBC CKY and Global who turned to him for insight and analysis. 11:00 Government failures caused mayhem for cab drivers back then, and now, it's harming City transit operators. Wait til you hear how many were assaulted in January; cabbies in the 1980's would have gone on strike, so why don't the transit operators? 13:43 A transit crime round up - Marty ties together the threats/intimidation, biting, robberies, violence, faced by a teenage girl, a 30 year old woman, another teenage girl... almost always at the hands of female perps. This is the new normal, folks. Hear about one passenger who had enough in St. Vital; meanwhile Route 20 delivers real-life experiences with the decay. Marty refers back to his old interview with Kelly Dehn to illuminate who is to blame for the deterioration of safe bus service in Winnipeg today- and urges City Council to be accountable for standing by while women in particular were being brutalized. 29:00 Part 2- Spirited Kenny asks chatgpt what it knows about Winnipeg, Manitoba. Hear what AI has to say about our city, attractions, and when it stumbles over a suburb. Kenny flags the response about the famous folks listed from Winnipeg and the CFL Bombers. Overall, if chatgpt was a radio caller in the old days, Kenny would've hung up. 34:44 Part 3- Marty concludes the episode by first, digging up yet two more examples of street-level mayhem that fit the pattern he identified; he explains how only modern technology has kept the homicide total from even greater heights. 40:00 – Think the Frontier Centre is the only target of slanted reporting in Winnipeg? Steve Vogelsang was an instructor at Red River College when TGCTS was airing on Kick-FM. While we didn't have much to do with him, unlike other RRC staffers he appreciated the work we did with the student interns. Last week the Free Press ran a hit piece on him and a film being made about his lapse into criminal activity. Steve proclaimed on Facebook the WFP never tried to contact him or the producers: "I taught journalism to approximately 700 first year students over 9 years but never saw a single story as rife with untruths, errors, and inaccurate implications." We air his grievances about the "bald-faced lies" in the article and illustrate how the MSM cares less about facts than the agenda of the gatekeepers. Daniella Ponticelli, is a pre-and post-game radio host and sideline reporter for the CFL's Saskatchewan Roughriders games on 620 CKRM. With that, she is the first woman to work on the official Riders radio broadcasts. Additionally, she works contractually for the CFL club to produce written and video content. In Fall 2022, Daniella became the first female play-by-play announcer for USPORTS football, as the full-season radio voice of the University of Regina Rams. She first broke barriers a year earlier, becoming a full-time play-by-play announcer for the University of Saskatchewan Huskies women's hockey program. The radio broadcasts themselves made history, being the first time a private broadcaster (Pattison Media) committed to a full season of women's hockey in Canada. The team went on to win bronze at national in Charlottetown, P.E.I. Following up on that success, Daniella provided play-by-play and rinkside reporting for several games during the 2021-22 SJHL season, including work in the Finals series. A month later, she co-hosted the 2022 SJHL draft, a three-hour livestreamed event, working closely with teams and the league commissioner. Aside from hockey and football, Daniella also hosted a full season of Rattlers Rundown, a 12-episode weekly television show produced by AccessNow Sports during spring and summer 2022. The one-hour show featured interviews with coaches, players and fellow broadcasters, along with analysis of the Saskatchewan Rattlers and the Canadian Elite Basketball League. Pre-pandemic, Daniella worked as a contract on-floor reporter for Saskatchewan Rush Lacrosse games in Saskatoon, broadcast on B/R Live, until COVID-19 halted the season in March 2020. The season prior, 2018-19, Daniella worked with the club full-time as the host and producer of Rush TV along with in-stand announcer. Working solo, she shot, wrote, edited and produced ten 30-minute episodes showcasing players and coaches, fans and the work of Rush partner businesses. With more than a decade of news experience, Daniella strives to tell stories with accuracy, compassion and context. Throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, Daniella solo anchored Global News Morning in Regina, starting first as the station's community reporter and backfill weather specialist in October 2019. Daniella's versatility stems from her education in the joint Creative Communications degree-diploma program. In 2012, she earned a Bachelor of Arts in communications from The University of Winnipeg while also completing her journalism diploma from Red River College. As a student, Daniella freelanced and took on various embedding opportunities with The Canadian Forces, even taking her to the Northwest Territories. She continued writing military stories as the resident CFB Shilo reporter/photographer for the Brandon Sun out of university. Working professionally ever since, Daniella has gained experience in print, broadcast and digital-first newsrooms. The summer of 2019, she worked casually as a videographer, web writer and social media presenter for CBC Saskatchewan, while also joining the MaxTron video crew as a camera operator at Mosaic Stadium. She was a senior web editor and reporter/anchor for Rawlco Radio in Saskatoon and Regina from 2016-2018. Before that, she worked in television news as a video journalist for CTV Winnipeg and a host/producer for Shaw TV Saskatoon, as well as a print reporter for the Winnipeg Sun. #daniellaponticelli #saskatchewanroughriders #livewithcdp #podcast #talkshow #guest #reginarams #sidelinereporter #playbyplayannouncer #canadianfootballleague #620CKRM #regina #saskatchewanhuskies #womenshockey #youtubechannel #facebooklive #twitter #audio #applepodcasts #googlepodcasts #spotify #anchorfm #iheartradio #amazonmusic #tunein #stitcher #breaker #pocketcasts #radiopublic #linkedin #castbox #barrycullenchevrolet #sponsor

And digital marketing has become more of an effective promotional tool.In episode 63, Genny spoke with Tineke Buiskool-Leeuwma, owner of Tin Can Creative. He is also a guest lecturer and global mentor at The University of Nottingham Ningbo China and the Chair of the UK Employee Experience Awards and Global Ambassador for Engage for Success.  What followed that interesting topic was a delightful chat with Dele Ola, Director of the Technology Access Centre for Aerospace and Manufacturing at Red River College, Author of "Be A Change Agent". We covered some big picture topics, such as: What is the difference between a leader and a manager? How does a leader function? What's necessary to keep atop changes in the world and workforce? Transit Safety

I have concerns with the current Transit Master Plan. There are some significant financial questions not being answered. Approval of this plan would max the city's credit. There is a risk that we must consider. There should be a rapid transit route which on one bus connects Red River College's main campus to HSC / U of M to downtown to U of M main campus. Any transit plan not based on 100% electrification is insufficient. Was light rail transit considered? It was fifteen years ago. A Master Plan should move us forward and be functional twenty-five years from now, not just be more of the status quo. Finally, the Master Plan doesn't address a primary concern I hear from residents, using transit isn't safe. We recently saw reports of the protective transit screen breaking when a bottle was thrown at one. I have residents who called me about people refusing to wear masks while riding the bus. They are afraid for their health. Others have reported that people will take a shopping bag if they sit too close to a door. Others are afraid to use transit to attend events because of having to wait for a bus downtown at night. I realize nobody wants to speak about this, but someone has to. Facts do not cease to exist because they are ignored. We need to collect quality data to inform policy, direct investments, and plan appropriately. I will NOT spend over one billion dollars of resident's money on a master plan that is only half done and is something residents will continue to be afraid to use. That doesn't make any sense. Let's collect the data. Review the facts and focus on solutions that keep everyone safe. "Even if you go to University and you have an idea of what you want to do, just keep your mind open because you never know what path could end up piquing your interest." - Mitchell Clinton Welcome to Episode 3 of the Simple To Understand podcast. My guest today is my good friend Mitchell (Mitch) Clinton. As a Winnipeg Jets Reporter (and for those who might now know who the Winnipeg Jets are, they are a professional hockey team who play in the National Hockey League 'NHL') he has the unique opportunity to actually travel with the Winnipeg Jets across North America. In this episode, we lift the vale on what goes on behind the scenes with regards to a lot of the various types of marketing that gets produced and distributed through multiple media platforms. We talk about the evolution of social media and the growing impact it has on large sports franchises as well as the amount of effort and teamwork that goes into producing a top-of-the-line end product that ends up getting distributed to millions of fans watching around North America (and the world). So without going into too much detail on who Mitch is because you'll have to just listen to the episode for the full rich experience of that. Mitch has been around hockey constantly since around five or six years old and has been officiating (reffing) since 13. His first exposure to broadcasting was after university working at 730 CKDM where he got to read sports and newscasts among many other things. He also played midget AA hockey throughout most of high school so as you can probably gather by now, he's a hockey guy through and through. Mitch has a degree in Journalism with a minor in Political Science which he attained from the University of Winnipeg and also a diploma in Journalism where he graduated from the Creative Communications program at Red River College. He joined the Winnipeg Jets in November of 2013 originally as their Web Content Coordinator and this position evolved quickly as did the rise of digital marketing and social media. Mitch is also one of the hosts of the Winnipeg Jets Podcast, "Ground Control". Finally, I encourage listeners to stay to the end because when asked, "Where do you see the NHL heading in the future and things you might want to see corrected?" his answer intrigued me and I'm hoping will spark some curious thoughts. Let me know what you think of his answer along with any other favourite parts of the episode by leaving a comment at the bottom of this post or on my YouTube channel. Enjoy! Pat Holiday has spent 9 years away from work inside a physical radi station. In that time he has seen that its issues remain the same and there is both good and bad in that. He moderated the Broadcast Leadership panel "Like a Boss" at Canadian Music Week and did not serve up any softballs, but he did admit to leaving a few fast balls on the table. From his iconic beginnings at the Big 8 at CKLW in Detroit, to working in three Canadian cities in management, Pat has a knack for taking a market's temperature and reflecting it in the radio station he champions. He readily admits that radio has changed but things are not as bad as they seem, and radio is perhaps fixing the product at the wrong end. Update 2021: Pat has started a Program Director's course. Subscribe to it here on Youtube! It is really good. My thanks to Karen Steele at Virgin Radio in Kitchener for the show idea. Other notable credits include Matt Abra from Red River College who edited the episode, and Lauren Siddall who heads up the Social Media and Digital side of things here at the podcast. Passive learning methods like lectures, readings and demonstrations remain the mainstay in higher ed, but research tells us that active learning approaches can have much more lasting impact on student learning outcomes. From small group discussions and project-based learning to experiential field schools and peer teaching, in this episode Ken sums up some compelling evidence from UBC, Queen's, and Guelph that seem to demonstrate that students learn significantly more from deliberate practice and enquiry-based learning than from lecture. Students who collaboratively observe a video of a tutoring session - not a lecture - learn better. Those who made mistakes and were then corrected learned 60% more than those who were guided straight to the correct answer. There are lasting benefits to enquiry-based learning seminars, particularly for "B" students. Queen's has opened Ellis Hall, a new facility featuring active learning classrooms. https://youtu.be/bJDCgeaK44E 80% of Generation Z prefer to study with friends, and 40% will do so on Skype if not in person. That social orientation of students may be driving the creation of learning commons and social space on campuses from St Mary's U to the U of Calgary. Small adjustments to the lecture theatre can improve student engagement. George Brown College's new learning studios allow classes to shift from lecture to group discussions and back. Iowa State U has installed seats that swivel 240 degrees in double-wide rows that allow for group work. Oregon State U opened the new Learning Innovation Center last fall, including 2 "in the round" lecture halls that hold 600 students, all within 15 feet of the instructor. Active learning classrooms date back at least 20 years, to the SCALE-UP classrooms at North Carolina State U. Students sit in clusters of 9, and students learn better 88% of the time (particularly female students). The model has been emulated at hundreds of campuses. Writer and educator Stan Chung explored the intersections of identity and culture with IETP workshop participants. Using an indigenous framework, the session considered a critical question: how do we find new connection and consciousness in a time of increasing cultural polarity? How do we create new ceremonies that resist the dominance of globalized mass culture? Participants examined improvisation and attempted to articulate those ceremonies that bridge cultures, deepen empathy, and transform both personal and institutional identity. Chung is Vice President Academic and Research at Red River College, Winnipeg.
