From the Emergencies Act to land claims and property rights, some of Canada's most important issues are being decided in the courts. But are judges simply applying the law or are they playing a bigger role in shaping public policy? Former Manitoba judge Brian Giesbrecht says public trust in the courts is declining and that judges have become too involved in political and social issues. Join David Leis live with Giesbrecht, Alberta lawyer Leighton Grey, and Marco Navarro-Genie, VP of Research at Frontier Centre, as they share the growing power of the courts, controversial rulings, and what it all means for Canadians. Why does this matter? What policies need to change?
Sheldon explores the Acts 2 account of the coming of the Holy Spirit to empower the church to testify. The gift of tongues translated God's praise into the dialects of the listeners; we, too, can speak life into the lives of others.
Maria Giesbrecht shares her gorgeous poetry in A LITTLE FERAL. Written in the aftermath of leaving a conservative Mennonite upbringing, these poems chart a parallel journey of breaking away— from father, from God, from the confines of obedience.
In this week's episode, I'm joined by poet Maria Giesbrecht to talk about her debut collection, A Little Feral. The collection was written after leaving a conservative Mennonite upbringing, and her poems explore themes of faith, family, and personal resurrection. Maria and I started the conversation with her background in corporate accounting and the catalysts to her being a full time poet, piecemealing her way into a freelance writing career with the support of her life partner. A Little Feral's emotional arc captures the process of purging parts of her past, accepting that she might never feel whole, and that that is enough. This leads us into a discussion about the righteous anger of women during our current times, using that feral part of ourselves to move the needle for women's rights. We talk about Maria's writing style, where she details her current writing habits for keeping the channel open and how that routine helps keep her writing on track. Maria goes into a little bit of detail about her relationship with her writing gods and how showing up regularly is imperative to keeping the channel active. We round out our conversation with a quick digression into Maria's MFA topic and her hope to capture parts of her past within the laborer community and the guilt that can come with stepping into spaces or stages our loved ones can't or don't understand. You can buy A Little Feral now: https://bookshop.org/a/54661/9781949342819You can learn more about Maria Giesbrecht here: https://mariagiesbrecht.com/If you have an author, book, or topic you want to hear about on the podcast, then don't hesitate to slide into my DMs on Instagram or shoot me an email!Subscribe to my newsletter to keep up to date on the latest podcast happenings: https://in-bed-with-books.kit.com/76d11f1d51Where else to find me:IG: @inbedwithbookspodYT: https://www.youtube.com/@InBedWithBooksPodEM: inbedwithbookspodcast@gmail.com
Today on the Basketball Manitoba Podcast, we have Jon Giesbrecht, a coach who's built a career around player development, the mental game, and helping athletes play free.He started coaching at 15 when he stepped in to coach his younger brother's team, and he hasn't stopped since then. He's coached many of those same players to a JV provincial championship and an undefeated Grade 12 season at John Taylor Collegiate, where he was the co-coach of the program, with many players going on to play university basketball. He has coached at the provincial team level, winning a gold medal as an assistant with the U17 boys team. He's also worked with Canada Basketball as a video coordinator for the Canadian Junior Men's National Team. He's coached at the University of Winnipeg and the University of Manitoba, including two seasons as a full-time assistant coach with the University of Regina women's program. He moved on from the college level and went on to coach prep in Italy as the director of mental performance. The last two seasons, he was with the Vancouver Bandits as Director of Mental Skills & Performance. He also runs a private practice called “Play Free”, where he teaches athletes how to handle pressure, regulate emotions, and perform when it matters.
In this episode, George and Jon Giesbrecht explore the concept of mental toughness in sports, emphasizing resilience, routines, and energy regulation. They discuss the importance of co-regulation between athletes and coaches, the process of subbing in and out during games, and the need for athletes to find their own paths rather than following someone else's blueprint. The conversation also touches on how to challenge fear and embrace mistakes, ultimately leading to a state of playing free on the court. This morning, the focus is on the heart of missions—what it truly means to participate in God's work in the world. It's a privilege that God invites imperfect people to be part of His perfect plan, not as spectators, but as active participants. Over the past five years, our journey in Mexico has involved evangelism, supporting churches, running a secondhand store to help the poor and fund ministry, and organizing conferences and mission trips. These activities are not just about doing good; they are about keeping the essentials of missions at the center. At the core of all missions is the gospel—the essential message of God's love and redemption through Jesus Christ. The gospel is not just a set of teachings or a lifestyle; it is the message that reconciles God and humanity. Without the gospel, all our efforts are empty, no matter how noble they seem. The gospel is where God's justice and mercy meet, where the sacrifice of Jesus and the ministry of the Holy Spirit make salvation possible for those who repent and believe. It's easy to be distracted by good works, relationships, or even church programs, but if the gospel is not central, we are missing the point. Our authority to share this message comes from Jesus Himself, who commands us to go and make disciples. The work is not ours; it is God's, and He promises that even the gates of hell cannot prevail against it.Being witnesses is not just about telling a story; it's about living a life surrendered to the cause of Christ, empowered by the Holy Spirit. True witness may even mean giving our lives, not just our words, for the sake of the gospel. Preaching is God's chosen method to present His case to the world—not as a debate, but as a proclamation that stirs the heart and calls for a response. Teaching, especially sound doctrine, is essential so that people believe in the true Christ and are not led astray by false ideas. Finally, missions require action—going beyond our comfort zones. Whether we go ourselves or send others, we must not try to do missions from the safety of home alone. The power of God is in His people, out in the world, sharing the gospel, teaching truth, and living as witnesses. This is the most exciting and significant work we can be part of. The call is to respond now, not later, and to let God use us in His mission.
In this episode, George is joined by Jon Giesbrecht, founder of Play Free Basketball, Director of Mental Performance for the Vancouver Bandits, and author of Free Your Mind: Overthinking Athletes. Jon shares how mindfulness and emotional regulation can transform both coaches and players. He explains how to bridge the gap between basketball coaching and mental performance, build player awareness through breathwork, and use journaling as a tool for self-discovery and growth. Altona, Manitoba, is a small town sitting in the middle of a windswept prairie about a fifteen-minute drive north of North Dakota. In the winter, the days are short, the snow falls frequently, and there's very little to do except play hockey or other indoor activities. The town was founded by Mennonites, who, like the Amish, are known for their pacifist and peaceful ways. However, that did not mean the town was exempt from its fair share of tragedies. However, nothing would stun the Altona residents more than what happened on a November night in 1990. What started as a typical evening for two teenage boys ended in a horrific home invasion that left one dead and the other critically injured. The attack was violent and merciless, shaking the entire community to its core. Join Jen and Cam as they discuss "Out of the Fire: Murder in Altona." Retired Judge Brian Giesbrecht speaks candidly about how Canada is not helping its Indigenous peoples by continuing to provide money and empty land acknowledgements. What does this all do to one person's confidence in themselves to thrive? And if we're really on "stolen land", could your property be taken from you one day?
Social engineering is not a new threat — adversaries have long used psychological manipulation to gain access, money, information and more. But as we learn in this episode from Shelly Giesbrecht, Director of Professional Services at CrowdStrike, it remains a top cybersecurity challenge for all organizations. Today's social engineers are more convincing than ever. Gone are the days of clunky phishing emails rife with spelling errors. Modern social engineering attacks arrive as convincing and well-crafted text messages, emails and voice calls. They prey on human emotion and instinct, creating situations where technology can't always help.“ “It really comes down to that human factor,” says Shelly. “We talk a lot about technology, and obviously CrowdStrike is a technology company, but we are fallible still at the human level — and that's where social engineering is targeted.” In a conversation that starts with impostor syndrome and quickly pivots to the impostors who are emailing employees and calling help desks, Adam, Cristian and Shelly explore the modern social engineering landscape. Shelly describes what her team is seeing on the front lines of incident response, how social engineering campaigns are evolving with the rise of AI, and guidance for organizations worried about this prolific technique.

Today on the podcast, a brief look back into a little bit of Overdrive's recent history, as you'll hear Canada-headquartered owner-operator Josh Giesbrecht intimate up top. Giesbrecht notes Overdrive gave him his "first big break" on the road to expanded influence around the world for his daily/near-daily series of video blogs he's hosted for nigh on a decade and a half at this point. His "Trucker Josh" Youtube channel to this day continues to bring the bedrock in-cab reality of Canadian and U.S. hauling to the masses all around the world: https://www.youtube.com/@Trucker_Josh Turns out Overdrive was among the first outlets to cover what he was doing way back near the start of it, as he tells it, and set the video blog off on a run toward a much bigger audience. The "Trucker Josh" channel's history is certainly a living one, though, as it continues to be a repository of everything to landscapes and tarping tutorials, to mini rants and safety outreach, and so much more. Josh Giesbrecht is the latest well-deserving honoree in a Hall of Fame hosted by a company regular listeners will no doubt be well aware of. You can find the fine folks behind the Howes Hall of Fame at https://howesproducts.com/hof -- and find our initial reporting on Giesbrecht's induction via this link: https://www.overdriveonline.com/life/article/15666875/trucker-josh-giesbrecht-new-howes-hall-of-fame-member Overdrive Editor Todd Dills sat down with owner-operator Giesbrecht and Howes Executive Vice President Rob Howes II at the Mid-America Trucking Show, where the Howes company announced the Hall of Fame induction. In the podcast today, the results of that talk, in which Giesbrecht ultimately centers on this central reason for his continued, dogged pursuit of sharing the life of the over-the-road driver and truck owner day-in, day-out: "I want this to go throughout my life," he said of his daily chronicling, to be "the thing that I leave behind to my kids, my gandkids. Hopefully it's something that can earn their respect. 'He started from here, he ended here, and he did good.'" For the trucking community, then, Giesbrecht's will be a legacy of improvement in public appreciation of the brass-tacks work of hauling. Said Overdrive Radio host Todd Dills, "It's somewhat easy to underestimate the impact video blogs like Trucker Josh's have had on the better appreciation of the work of trucking by the general public. Geisbrecht's was certainly among the first, and now with a subscription base in the six figures, it's continuing to strike a nerve, or strike a chord, as it were, with a worldwide audience." Jon is on a mission to help athletes get to the next level with mental performance, he specializes in basketball mindfulness and it's clear by the way he talks about it and implements it that it's extremely effective. The mental performance side of sports is something I'm super intrigued by. I've studied it, implemented it with my athletes, with myself and I've seen results in both. It's an extremely powerful thing, Jon thinks so as well.Jon and I talk about what mindfulness is to him, he talks about his 3 buckets of mindfulness. We also talk about how he implements mindfulness, strategies as well as some tactics to use for both individuals and teams or groups. We then touch on some specific topics like "being totally involved but unattached", self-talk, dealing with emotions/feelings and also breath work and the role it plays in all of the aboveMake sure to check out Jon on socials:IG - https://www.instagram.com/playfreebball/

Kerri has all the animals (sheep, chickens and horses), she runs a U-Pick veggie garden in the summer, make livestock feed for not only her farm but other farms as well, runs a farm market in the summer months and on-farm events. And in her not so much downtime she helps her husband with his grain farm operation. According to Kerri she doesn't sleep much, drinks far too much coffee, but she loves what she does and even on the hard days it's better than going to her old 9-4 job in downtown Edmonton. TRANSCRIPT HERE Maz and Steph finally present to you the magnum opus of podcast content about Mental Illness in film. They watched both versions of telemovies Sybil, and now you don't have to. That, is the 1976 version starring Sally Field and Joanne Woodward, and the 2007 version starring Jessica Lange and Tammie Blanchard. (Our cover image contains the font they used in that 2007 version, which is harmful to my soul). Get your ears prepped as we unpack the true story which inspired Sybil, and the cultural impact it had on diagnoses of Multiple Personality Disorder, which was since renamed Dissociative Identity Disorder, and all the ins and outs of what DID is and dissociation itself.
