This week Brian and Harrison kick things off with some footy chat; they chat about the weather delay at the Pies vs Dees game, the finals picture as it stands, the launch of the AFLW season and plenty more. Away from football, they cover off; BT's wrap of the TV Week Logies, what goes on for his week off, and they get to some mailbag submissions. Later, the boys are joined by 4x Paralympian Ahmed Kelly. Ahmed's story is one of the more incredible tales of inspiration and resilience that you'll ever encounter, he was born with severely underdeveloped arms and legs (not uncommon in countries torn by chemical warfare). After his birth, he was abandoned at an orphanage in Bagdad, Iraq, and following several years of living in that orphanage, he met his now mother, humanitarian Moria Kelly. Moria brought Ahmed to Australia for major life altering surgery, and not after long, ended up adopting Ahmed. Fast forward, he is now a 4x Paralympic swimmer, collecting a Paralympic Silver Medal in 2020, World Championship Gold and Silver Medals (23' & 19' respectively) and a true beacon of inspiration. What sticks out most about Ahmed is his unwavering positivity and outlook on life, he has never used his disability as a disadvantage and approaches all things with a massive smile. Brian and Harrison have a long-standing connection with Ahmed having grown up in the Kilmore area and attending Assumption College together. This week Kristi chats with two of her old friends, Ben Weatherwax and Michael Fairley, lightweight Harvard Rowing and Saratoga alumni who just won their race at IRAs. The guys take us back to the beginning of their rowing careers (in fourth grade!) to high school rowing (including winning Nationals) and through their unconventional roads to Harvard. We hear about how they helped turn their less-than-stellar program to into one of the top programs in the nation, and learned the lesson that more hard work and dedication is usually the answer. After racking up one too many 2nd place finishes, they made a pledge of “no more silver medals” - and it worked. But watch out for the buoys. Plus: Kristi is rocking Comfort Plus seats and gelato as she trains in Italy, but her traveling library is weighing her down. Will she and Sophia be able to assemble their fan? Stay tuned. She is a 2-time AVCA All-American in beach and still holds indoor records in career aces and digs. In Betsi's rookie AVP Season in 2015, she and Kelly Kolinske were the youngest team at the time to take home an AVP Championship. Betsi was voted the AVP Newcomer of the Year. Her most defining moment, however, was winning AVP Cincinnati in her first year out of college. It was then that she realized she could pursue becoming a professional beach volleyball player full-time. When Betsi isn't playing volleyball, she is spending time with her husband Chase and their daughter Cora or meal prepping. One interesting fact about Betsi is that she was born and raised in a small town in South Dakota, where she fell in love with sports. She later moved to Phoenix, AZ, with her family. Team USA Paralympian Swimmer, Ahalya Lettenberger is On The Road to Paris as she makes a mark on the competition...literally Team USA celebrates one year to the Olympic and Paralympic Games Paris 2024 by inviting fans to make their mark in support of America's Olympians and Paralympians by getting custom made-to-fade tattoos that celebrate our athletes. Paralympian Swimmer, Ahalya Lettenberger is On The Road to Paris as she along with several other Team USA Olympian and Paralympians are celebrated at Ephemeral Tattoo in Los Angeles, CA. During the evening's events in Los Angeles, the United States Olympic & Paralympic Committee launched its one-year countdown to the Olympic and Paralympic Games Paris 2024 by inviting fans around the nation to make their mark for Team USA. In its quest to be remembered by car rental customers, Avis once proudly proclaimed, "We're #2. We Try Harder." It was a brilliant campaign that highlights the challenges of being second. No one remembers you. Kurt and Jon are both second children so they've been dealing with this challenge forever. (Some people even start a podcast to overcompensate.) So Jon and Kurt set out to make sure the silver medalists from history and pop culture get their due. Come learn about Michael Wilding, Twice a Prince, Samuel Tilden, and so many others who just missed out on immortality and why. Jon and...what's the other guy's name? The guy who's second in the Smart Drivel title? Ah, it's on the tip of my tongue. Anyway, enjoy the episode.
According to Wikapedia, Jerry Miculek is referred to as "The Greatest Shooter of All Times". Rightfully so, he holds numerous world speed shooting records but also hit a small target at 1,000 yards shooting a 9mm handgun, off-hand. His doing so impresses me more than his world speed shooting records. Kay's father was Jimmy Clark, one of the world's best pistolsmiths and shooters. He taught his daughter early on how to shoot handguns and shoot them ultra accurately. She has collected many Gold and Silver Medals shooting in World IPSC competitions as well as in other handgun competitions. Jerry and Kay Miculek combined are without a doubt two of the world's best and most known and recognized shooters. In this episode we talk about a lot of things, but mostly not about shooting competitions and more about hunting, wildlife and growing up in the country! Learn more about your ad choices. Join host Joanne Carey as she chats with Special Guest: Gina Tse, Artistic Director International dance School, Stockholm, Sweden This episode of “Dance Talk” ® with Joanne Carey, is a part of an exciting series Joanne has created that is focusing on the work of Artistic Directors titled: Artistic Directors; "Creating the Torch: Legacy, Mission, Vision; Making and Keeping, History in the 21st Century" Within the series, several guests join Joanne to dive into the responsibility of carrying on the mission and legacy of well established and often world famous dance companies, dance institutions and academies as well as the journey of artistic directors who are forming and have created new dance companies and institutions; all whom are paving the way in the dance world, making their artistic mark for generations to come. In this episode, Joanne sits down, across time zones, with Gina Tse, to discuss Gina's artistic vision and the freedom of creating a dance organization from the ground up and in doing so is instilling the mission of "giving back — teaching from the heart to spread the joy of dance". By keeping the love of the art form, the well-being of her students, and the leadership of her staff at the forefront, Gina has taken both her extraordinary dance and theater background as well as her professional career as a principal dancer with the Royal Swedish Ballet, to create a school where the joy of artistry is nurtured and the vehicle of dance is used as the building blocks of life. Gina Tse began her ballet training at 3 years of age and commenced her pre-professional training at The Royal Ballet School in London seven years later. She was a dancer with English National Ballet before joining The Royal Swedish Ballet in 2004. There, she was promoted to First Soloist in 2007 and Principal Dancer in 2011–– the same year she was awarded Dancer of the Year in Stockholm. She danced with Stockholm 59°North soloists and was also nominated for Benois de la Dance in Moscow at the Bolshoi Theatre in 2016. Gina has danced for The Swedish Royal Family on numerous occasions, including The Nobel Banquet, and has performed Swan Lake for the Opening of Parliament. Gina's instrumental role in the development of The International Ballet School and Arts Centre has been constant. From teaching 3 year olds the thrill of movement within classical dance steps, to preparing her pre-professionals and Trainee Professionals for coming careers at the world's leading ballet schools and companies, her infectious love of dance and performance is contagious. With a remarkable 100% graduate success rate, it's no surprise that Gina Tse and the IBS teaching staff are in demand. Students and professionals from near and far regularly turn to IBS for masterful preparatory ballet training, and IBS senior associates have won scholarships from Carina Ari Foundation, as well as Gold and Silver Medals at the AED International Dance Competition held in Italy. Gina and her staff have taught at numerous summer dance workshops and schools across the globe. “It's about leaving the planet in a better condition than it is currently. What you're witnessing is years of neglect. It's the humans who have screwed it all up, and the warming of the earth is no different. The oceans are changing. The topography is changing. Mussels are being fried when the tides recede. This is all unnatural. Or maybe it's natural. I think it's Mother Nature just being pissed off and saying, “This is what you get.” And so it's up to everyone to change their ways. Their shopping habits, their eating habits, how much gas they use. All that stuff which people think “that can't affect anything.” Well, you're seeing the result of it now.”Ian Seabrook is an Underwater Director of Photography in the Motion Picture and Television Industry, working on a number of feature productions, such as Batman v Superman, Deadpool 2 and Jungle Cruise, along with documentary films such as The Rescue. When it comes to the world of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, few people are as popular or as active at the highest level of NoGi competition as Craig Jones. Craig, being an Aussie moved to the US, brings a flare to the scene not often seen. Between his hilariously off-color humor and his relaxed personality, you might be surprised how aggressive his jiu-jitsu is on game day. Jokingly known as the 2nd best grappler in every division, he's looking to at least claim that silver medal coming up in just over 2 weeks at the biggest jiu-jitsu event in the world - ADCC - being hosted this year in Las Vegas. ----- Follow the Social Disorder Substack for articles and links to many of the episodes you hear here: https://thesocialdisorder.substack.com/
Three Things I Learned In SaaS, Sports, Tech & Live Events Podcast
Had quite an adventure in Orlando watching our 12 year old son win a silver medal in the Junior National Volleyball Championship in front of a surprisingly big crowd. 12 year old volley is serious business to many these days. That said, it was a really fun experience and I learned so much about life and work. Here are three things I learned at Orlando AAU '22 1. "You don't want to be the kid everyone is rooting for. You want to be the kid everyone is relying on." A coach said this to me as we watched the later rounds and I love it. Needs no explanation. We know who those people are in our lives, on our teams and in our businesses. The ones we rely on, the ultimate form of trust 2. "All we can do is work really hard at what we want. Practice. Do the extra work. Prepare. Study. And if we do, we just might end up with the ball in our hands when it matters. And that's where you want to be. Where you decide who wins and loses, because you earned that right." A life changing quote I heard last summer and have worked on with our family and team ever since. There is no pressure in the big moment. It's why we do what we do. Its where we want to be. 3. In December 2020 our son had never played an organized game of volleyball. Boys don't usually play that young. We went to Maui where we decided to stay for nearly four months avoiding covid. His twin sister was playing on a team at the time with a tyrant of a coach. Just an awful situation who threatened that if she didn't "keep up" she couldn't stay on her team (she was 10). So we went out and practiced together every other day for months - trying to keep it fun and 'keep up.' Since Dellan was there, he participated. We worried every day about the situation our daughter was in - so we stayed diligent. We prayed and prayed. When we got home to the mainland, Dellan really wanted to play on a team. None of the local teams were playing due to Covid, so I called an old friend who had a club team in the south bay - a cool hour+ in traffic - to see if he could go to a practice or two. "He's on the team" was the reply. "And with Covid, there's no traffic so the drive (usually 90 min) will only be 45 min." We agreed to do it just for the three months left in the season. The team was magical. Incredible families and some of the most overqualified and best coaches I've seen - and I played on a lot of team. And the boys were good. Really good. Dellan was only 10. Most of them were 12 and 13, but they treated him like family and still do. At the first tournament we weren't allowed inside (covid). I didn't even pay for the live stream as there was no way he would play. He ran out with a beaming smile to tell me about his six aces. My response: "Wait….they put you in the game???" 15 months later Dellan is winning all-tournament awards and silver medals while playing every point of a 12u national championship match against Puerto Rico. As my good friend Jon Gordon says: "We're on a rock spinning 65,000 mph around the sun. Your entire existence is a miracle." He's right. We control almost nothing. And thank goodness we don't. From so much negative came so much positive. Who knew I could learn so much from 12 year old sports.

“It's about leaving the planet in a better condition than it is currently. What you're witnessing is years of neglect. It's the humans who have screwed it all up, and the warming of the earth is no different. The oceans are changing. The topography is changing. Mussels are being fried when the tides recede. My guest today is Robyn Lamsam, a former Olympian and holder of 21 National Swimming records. She was a silver and bronze medallist at the 1994 Asian Games and received the Badge of Honour from Queen Elizabeth II herself back in 1997 in recognition of her achievements and contribution to sport in Hong Kong. Robyn qualified for the 1992 Summer Olympics in Barcelona at the tender age of just 14 years old. Anyone who has competed on the world’s biggest stage, at an age when most of us are awkwardly stumbling through puberty and achieving nothing of note, is worth talking to. Anyone who has lived and breathed that elite performance mentality is worthy of further examination. What does it take to achieve one’s maximum potential? What are the sacrifices? What are the principles and habits that are transferable to business and just everyday life? She was also a star pupil of the legendary coach and Hall of Famer, Bill Sweetenham, who led Australia, Great Britain, and Hong Kong across 5 Olympic games, smashing records wherever he went. There's a link to Bill’s Life Lessons in the show notes below and if you are a business leader, a coach, a manager of people in any context whatsoever, it’s required reading. The man is a genius and Robyn has some great stories to tell from working under him. No less importantly, Robyn has also gone through some tough times as a mother and parent. Finding people who are willing to be vulnerable in public and shine a light on one’s emotional and mental health is always valuable. If I can sum up the narrative arc of this podcast, I’d say that it pulls on 3 main threads: Firstly, it is about discipline, desire, determination. The elite mindset. Secondly, it’s about coaching, leadership, motivation. How to manage people. And thirdly it’s about positivity, gratitude, resilience. How to deal with adversity. Framed in this way, I believe there are lessons in here for everyone, sports fan or not. Welcome to your weekly dose of running motivation. On this episode, we chat with 1500m runner Holly Archer who recently earned herself a silver medal representing GB at the European Indoor Championships in Poland. Holly, who felt super strong through the heats, found herself up against it in the final. The race, which started slowly, was frantic, with jostling throughout the field, and tactical play from two Spanish runners that prevented Holly from hitting the front of the pack when she wanted. After a blistering finish to the race Holly placed second, only to endure an agonising wait to see if she was going to be disqualified. Fortunately she wasn’t, and she is now the Indoor 1500m European Champion. #AskJake: Each week, we'll take one of your questions and Jake will answer it. This week it's all about Marathon pacing. Akeem Chandler-Prescod also known as StonedwithCupid is a spoken word artist, songwriter, audio engineer, rapper, theatre practitioner and creative director from the island of Barbados. He has amassed several awards such as 3 Silver Medals at the National Independence Festival for Creative Arts, performed at numerous notable Barbadian events, won numerous competitions and has even performed in South Africa at the Vrystaat Festival. In addition he has been nominated for Poet of The Year at the GineOn People’s Choice Awards as well as Music Video of the Year with a spoken word video, making it the first poetry video to be nominated for that award. His work is a combination of spoken poetry, rapping, chanting and unorthodox use of environmental sounds to create musical beds which he then lays his witty, thought provoking lyricism to create a niche poetic product. The pieces echo his inspirations which include Outkast, Sade, Erykah Badu, J Cole and Damien Marley. Background At the youthful age of 25 his artistic experience spans over 7 years with the first spark of his creativity being ignited at The Combermere School when he was 16 years old. This introduction into the creative sector came through the discipline of theatre arts where he learnt the basics of acting, stage craft and performance which would eventually form the skeleton of his performance art in the years to come. Throughout his time at The Combermere School he appeared in many school productions as an actor as well as working backstage as a stage hand. This theatre journey found its next phase within the Youth Achieving Results Program which was organised by the National Cultural Foundation and was an attempt at that organisation to develop artistic development in Barbadian youth. This program provided vocal and performance training which allowed Akeem to find his voice in music. At the age of 17 he embarked on the frequently travelled path of being a rapper and writing Hip-Hop songs. He began recording these songs on his computer with the built in equipment and a free DAW which introduced him to the basics of mixing and mastering vocals. Many of these tracks were performed at school pageants, competitions and talent showcases for a few years as he continued to enhance his craft before exploring poetry. He wrote his first poem at the age of 22 and since then have written, recorded and produced over 30 poetic pieces. His poetry arose from a need to be able to express all his disciplines under one umbrella in a cost effective manner where he can not only do everything he is good at it but also create something new that can give him a competitive advantage and bring value to the artistic market. The first few poems were reinventions of rap songs which then matured into fusions of poetry with hip-hop influences. Having self-taught himself to write, rap, produce, mix and master as well as direct his creative performances, his creations are not reminiscent or reflections of any existing genre or artist and can only be defined as his own genre. The Art At current his poetry is packaged in a digital format in the form of audio/visual recordings and distributed online. These recordings often consist of stripped instrumentals utilizing very few instruments with many being replaced with a vocal bed or vocal loop. Ambient environmental sounds are used such as heartbeats, gasps, claps, winds and waves to create a soundscape which the vocals exist within. The lyrical delivery meanders between a slower poetic execution and a fast paced rapping style which occasionally is accompanied with melodic backing vocals. The style of mixing, which consist of heavy reverberation often found in neo soul productions and pitched vocals more often seen in hip-hop give the production a distinct sound and feel. The usage of his Barbadian accent with sprinkles of a standardized accent plant the seeds of a... See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

This week on 5.6.7.EIGHT, Aleksandra interviews Katherine Barkman, an award-winning American ballerina who is currently a dancer at The Washington Ballet and has performed as an international guest principal across the world. She began her career as a principal dancer at the prestigious Ballet Manila in Southeast Asia and, at 18, was the youngest artist to claim this role. Katherine has won numerous dance accolades, including consecutive Silver Medals from two of the most prestigious ballet competitions — the XI USA International Ballet Competition in Jackson, MS, and the XXVIII Varna International Ballet Competition in Bulgaria. On the podcast, Katherine recounts her inspiring ballet journey. Having only begun ballet lessons at the age of 14, Katherine’s drive to succeed thrust her into the international eye — even with no prior professional experience — and ultimately granted her the opportunity to move across the world only four years later. From Pennsylvania to Manila to Washington, D.C. (and many places in between), she has collected a wealth of wisdom about the nature of our dreams, the importance of performing for the love of the craft, and how grit and determination can accomplish more than we realize.
