"I had done great things in the sport before, but I had never won a medal. That was something that had tormented me and eluded me for so long. And I finally got two of them. So it feels great. It feels even better when you feel so much ownership over them. I know that it was my decision-making and risk-taking that led to those outcomes." My guest for today's episode is U.S. Olympian and two-time bronze medalist Grant Fisher. Grant had a career-defining year in 2024, standing on the podium twice at the Paris Olympics in the 5000m and 10,000m. But true to his form, he's not content to rest on those accomplishments. He's gearing up for a new challenge in 2025 by signing on for the inaugural season of Grand Slam Track. In this interview, he shares his thoughts on how the Grand Slam model can elevate track visibility, attract new fans, and give athletes like him more opportunities to test themselves against the best in the world. He's in a racer group that will contest a 3K and 5K against the likes of Luis Grijalva, Ronald Kwemoi and one more racer that is expected to be announced soon.  We dive into Grant's reflections on his breakout 2024 season, the lessons he's carrying into 2025, and how he's preparing for a shot at both glory and Grand Slam Track and some more hardware at the world Championships in Tokyo. Host: Chris Chavez | @chris_j_chavez on Instagram Guest: Grant Fisher | @grantfisher_ on Instagram Time stamps: 4:08 - Where he's at with training and racing coming off the Olympics. 5:15 - Reflections on his 2024 season. 6:42 - How he built his confidence heading into the Olympics. 7:47 - Goals for the 2025 season. 8:48 - Why he decided to sign with GST.  15:24 - Why he might have an edge over other GST racers. 17:12 - Thoughts on racing the 3K/5K double in Jamaica. 21:05 - Why fans should care about watching GST. 23:19 - Thoughts on his GST competitors, who else he wants to join. In December, 1981, the St Peter Port lifeboat crew braved 15m waves to go to the aid of stricken cargo ship, the Bonita. The late coxswain – Michael Scales – relives a momentous rescue In the second of two episodes dedicated to one of the RNLI's finest rescues, the late coxswain of the Sir William Arnold lifeboat – Michael Scales – recalls battling 3-storey swells to help save 29 lives. Arriving at the scene between Guernsey and Devon, the lifeboat was dwarfed by the 8,000-tonne cargo ship, Bonita, listing on its side with its rudder and propeller exposed. The RNLI's youngest coxswain at the time recalls the night he and his determined crew made no less than 50 attempts to save those on board. The rescue would earn Michael an RNLI Gold Medal for Gallantry, and his entire crew were awarded Bronze Medals. Since this episode was recorded, the Sir William Arnold lifeboat – restored by former fundraiser Colin Trowles – was moved and is now a floating museum in Heybridge Basin, Maldon, Essex. In the first podcast episode dedicated to the Bonita, Nils Fosstveit – one of the crew members that went to the aid of Bonita that night – shares his account of the rescue he'll never forget. It's week five of the Champion's Mindset series and I am talking to Erin Cafaro MacKenzie. She is a two-time Olympic Gold Medalist in rowing and she has podiumed at every World Championship rowing competition that she has competed in – a total of six World Championship Gold Medals and two Bronze Medals. Erin and her husband currently run Power Speed Endurance, a sports-specific training program dedicated to improving skill, performance, fitness and overall potential. Erin's definition of the Champion's Mindset has evolved over the years. At first, it was related to an indomitable spirit – the “X factor” of just going. While that may be a common definition, Erin believes the Champion's Mindset is something that is more at peace, as opposed to forceful. “A champion is someone who is doing it not to beat someone else – it's for them.” At Power Speed Endurance, Erin and her husband are trying to figure out an equation for each sport to use speed as a monitor for skill. In most monostructural (or endurance) sports – like running, rowing and even skateboarding – the athlete's balance of friction and connection dictates the speed at which they can perform tasks, and the ability to perform those tasks relates directly to an athlete's skill. We've discussed Grit a lot during the Champion's Mindset series, and it's an idea that Erin has been exploring as well. Angela Duckworth has a fantastic TED Talk and book on the subject, but there is also a downside to Grit. Too much friction prevents us from realizing our fullest potential, but just the right amount of friction can propel us to amazing heights. It's rare for someone to make the Olympics once, let alone twice, and it's even more difficult than you might imagine when you consider the adversity and setbacks an intensive athlete can experience. In 2011, a month before the World Championships, Erin broke two ribs; one on the right and one on the left. It was hard for her to stay sane at the time, but, in hindsight, the break gave her perspective on what it means to be a champion. “If everything was going great and came easily, I probably wouldn't take as much interest in it.” After the 2012 Olympics, Erin had to develop a different perspective on fulfillment. Her whole adult life leading up to that was devoted to training and pursuing the win, and then she thoroughly accomplished that. Experiencing depression after a period of great accomplishment or during a big transition is common, and this is a good time to turn to your tribe for support. “Pain is one of our greatest teachers” Erin's ability to endure struggle actually became an obstacle at times, because having a high pain threshold also means having a low ability to evolve and to change. “When it comes to everyday life and you have painful thoughts, and you're just sitting on them versus actually dealing with them or doing something different so that they don't reoccur, then that's when it's pretty un-functional.” The greatest lesson that Erin has learned as an athlete is that being a champion is not about being the superstar – it's about being able to get the best out of your teammates. She is trying to apply this lesson by creating a platform for Power Speed Endurance coaches to share their strengths, reach more athletes and thrive. I appreciate Erin's vulnerability and authenticity on this week's episode, because it shows that even the greatest champions experience struggle and need help picking themselves back up. Communities and adversity can be really powerful tools to help us grow.   Don't be a podcast junkie… Resources: Power Speed Endurance Watch Angela Duckworth's TED Talk on Grit Tribe by Sebastian Junger Ego is the Enemy by Ryan Holiday   -- This episode is brought to you by SY Partners and Unstuck, helping you make a change by identifying the things holding you up.
