Send us a textI spent the day soaking up the sights, sounds, and soil-stained goodness of the 2025 Perth Garden Show at McCallum Park, great vibes!Right by the Swan River, the place was packed with plant lovers, growers, weekend diggers, and sustainability legends from across WA.There were lush display gardens to explore, passionate stallholders sharing tips, and loads of hands-on wisdom flying around—from native planting and permaculture to composting, worm farms, and water-wise tricks. The Rewilding Zone was buzzing all day, where I got to set up shop next to Mel from Rewilding Suburbia and chat with some inspiring humans about bringing nature back into our suburbs.Support the show
Keeper Of The Greens segment of The Golfing Greenkeeper Podcast is brought to you by John Deere Golf. When you work where others play, you need a partner you can trust to keep your course in perfect condition. Find your nearest John Deere dealer at deere.com.auShane Baker is Superintendent of Mosman Park Golf Club in Perth, Western Australia. Born and bred in Perth Shane kind of stumbled across greenkeeping during his high school years. Taking time during school to work in sports turf, Shane was soon working on the hallowed grounds of the WACA. Preparing turf for all manner of sports saw Shane gain a wealth of experience early on, as did his time working at Mount Lawley Golf Club. He also gained more experience working at The Western Australian Golf Club and attending the Ohio program which took him to Oakmont GC in the USA.Shane's career has been anything but a straight line. Between working on numerous golf courses and the WACA ground in Perth, to working at exploring countless golf courses in the USA, Shane has gained more experience than your average greenkeeper which led him to his current long term post of 9 years as Superintendent at Mosman Park Golf Club.Granted, the 9 hole golf course of Mosman Park is probably one you're not familiar with however, that doesn't mean it's one you shouldn't know about. Perched high above a magnificent rock cutting of the Swan River, Mosman Park GC is a unique golf course for not only it's beautiful yet tranquil city location, but also its mostly Santa Ana couch green surfaces. Yes, you heard me correctly, Santa Ana greens! Shane gives us an insight into the unique site the golf course is built on and just how interesting the golf course itself is. From its natural setting, to the water challenges, to the turf surfaces, to the routing of the course, this conversation has it all.Join me for another fantastic ride to the west coast of Australia and an interesting insight into another fantastic greenkeeping career, this time with Superintendent Shane Baker. You hit 'em clean and we'll keep 'em green! The Golfing Greenkeeper - InstagramThe Golfing Greenkeeper - FacebookThe Golfing Greenkeeper TV - YouTubeSend me an email to - thegolfinggreenkeeper@gmail.comPeople and places mentioned in this podcast:Mosman Park Golf ClubMount Lawley Golf ClubThe Western Australian Golf ClubWACA Ground - WikiOhio International Intern ProgramOakmont Country ClubQuail Hollow ClubAraluen EstateNedlands Golf ClubPoint Walter Golf CourseSea View Golf ClubFremantle Public Golf CourseCottesloe Golf ClubGolf Course Superintendents Association of Western Australia (GCSAWA)7 Mile Beach GolfEP.118 The Design Brief: Rob Collins - King Collins Dormer - SpotifyEP.102 Keeper of the Greens - Idris Evans (The Western Australian Golf Club) - SpotifyEP.33 Keeper of the Green - Nathan Bennett (Royal Adelaide Golf Club)

Moondyne Joe is Western Australia's most famous Bushranger, but as first time guest Angus Gordon tells us, he is more famous for his jail escapes than his bush ranging!Note: Angus was raw dogging this report and let us know he got a couple of names wrong: the convict he called Simon Levey was actually named Solomon and the Governor of Swan River was Hampton not Hudson. This is a comedy/history podcast, the report begins at approximately 04:46 (though as always, we go off on tangents throughout the report).Support the show and get bonus episodes: patreon.com/DoGoOnPodSupport the show on Apple podcasts and get bonus eps in the app: http://apple.co/dogoon Live show tickets: https://dogoonpod.com/live-shows/ Submit a topic idea directly to the hat: dogoonpod.com/suggest-a-topic/ Check out our other podcasts:Book Cheat: https://play.acast.com/s/book-cheatPrime Mates: https://play.acast.com/s/prime-mates/Listen Now: https://play.acast.com/s/listen-now/Who Knew It with Matt Stewart: https://play.acast.com/s/who-knew-it-with-matt-stewart/ Our awesome theme song by Evan Munro-Smith and logo by Peader ThomasDo Go On acknowledges the traditional owners of the land we record on, the Wurundjeri people, in the Kulin nation. The Old Perth Courthouse is the city's oldest surviving building. It was built in 1836 to assert the supremacy of British law in the Swan River Colony and soon became integral to legal and civic life. It was designed in a classical 19th century Greek revival style and is one of two remaining examples of the work of Colonial Engineer Henry Revelly. It was also the scene of the infamous 1925 'Murder on the Dancefloor' trial of Audrey Jacob.
In this episode, we take some time to discuss the land reforms of 1831 which lay the roots for issues decades in the future, as well as talk about the Swan River legislative council and some convict mutinies. Finally, we end the episode with an overview on John Macarthur's death, and the legacy he leaves on the Australian colonies.

The Quicky will be back with new episodes from January 15, but until then here's one of our favourite episodes of this year. Thank you so much for being a part of The Quicky in 2023. 2023 saw 11 shark attacks in Australia, 3 of them fatal. In February, 16 year old Stella Berry was bitten and killed by a bull shark in Perth's Swan River. It's the first shark fatality for Australia in 2023, and the first in The Swan River in a century. We all know there are sharks in ocean. We all know that they are dangerous predators. But do you know what to do when confronted with one? In this episode of The Quicky, we speak to a man who was bitten by a shark not far from the same spot that Stella Berry was killed. We also hear from a shark safety diver who works with sharks every day, about what not to do if you come face to face with one of the oceans deadliest hunters. In this week's episode of Spinsterhood Reimagined, I talk to Australian author, Donna Ward. In her first book, She I Dare Not Name: A Spinster's Meditations On Life, Donna explores, through a collection of essays, the meaning and purpose that she has found in her life as a woman who has lived almost entirely without a partner or children. Donna is the founder of literary journal, Indigo: The Journal of Western Australian Creative Writing, and her prose can be found in respected journals and anthologies internationally and online; she also has a past life as a psychotherapist and social worker. In our conversation, Donna touches on her upbringing on the banks of the Swan River in Perth, her time as a social worker and a psychotherapist, how she realised in her forties that she would not achieve her desire to have a family, and her thoughts around the period of time when her friends ‘disappeared' into family life. We also talk about the time Donna became aware of the the stigma associated with being single and childless; how she coined the term ‘familied' in her book, and how she felt that she was “falling out of society” due to her position in life; her experience of being alone during lockdown in Melbourne during which time she wasn't allowed to form a ‘bubble'; and how the community narrative during that time was primarily focussed on families. Our conversation includes Donna's experience of loneliness and how she refers to it as ‘the gritty beast'; and how, actually, facing the dark sides of life head on is what makes us the best version of ourselves. And finally, Donna shares her belief that the joys and ecstasies of life are the same whether you're married with children, or single and childless. I sincerely hope that you all enjoy listening to this episode as much as I enjoyed recording it.Donna can be found on Instagram: @donnawardwriter. She can also be found on Twitter: @donnawardwriter.
