Dig Me Out: 80s Metal
Joe Satriani - Surfing with the Alien | 80s Metal Revisited

Dig Me Out: 80s Metal

Play Episode Listen Later Dec 12, 2024 52:32

In 1987, the world of rock and metal was ruled by flamboyant frontmen and larger-than-life bands. But with Surfing with the Alien, Joe Satriani flipped the script. An instrumental album led not by a voice but by six strings, it captured the imaginations of rock fans and musicians alike, proving that the guitar itself could sing.Joe Satriani's Surfing with the Alien is often hailed as a milestone in instrumental rock, but its legacy isn't without debate. While many view it as a masterful fusion of melody and virtuosity, others see it as emblematic of a niche genre that struggles to connect emotionally with a wider audience. Released in 1987, the album showcased Satriani's technical brilliance and melodic instincts, but its reception reflects a mix of awe, skepticism, and nostalgia. The Story Behind the AlbumSatriani's journey to guitar stardom began modestly, teaching guitarists like Steve Vai and Kirk Hammett while scraping by in California's music scene. After a lukewarm reception to his 1986 debut, Not of This Earth, Satriani poured everything he had—financially and creatively—into his follow-up, Surfing with the Alien. The result was a lean, melody-focused album recorded on a modest $13,000 budget that sought to balance technical guitar work with a broader emotional appeal. The album's comic book-inspired cover, featuring Marvel's Silver Surfer, hinted at the larger-than-life ambitions within. Tracks like the title song and “Satch Boogie” delivered on that promise with dizzying technicality, while the ballad “Always With Me, Always With You” showed a more tender, melodic side. These contrasts earned Satriani critical acclaim and a Grammy nomination, yet the album's broader appeal has remained divisive.A High-Water Mark for Some, Overindulgent for OthersFor fans of instrumental rock, Surfing with the Alien is a triumph. Its melodic hooks and memorable themes make it stand out in a genre often criticized for prioritizing flash over substance. Songs like “Ice 9” and “Crushing Day” blend technical mastery with accessibility, offering riffs and melodies that resonate well beyond the confines of the guitar-obsessed. It's an album that has moments of brilliance, where the guitar takes on the role of a vocalist, singing stories through its strings. But not everyone is moved by its charms. For some, the album represents the limitations of instrumental guitar music—tracks that, while impressive, can feel like exercises in technique rather than fully realized emotional experiences. The lack of lyrics and a frontman, which are often strengths for Satriani's fans, are viewed as barriers for those who find the album's tone more clinical than heartfelt. Surfing with the Alien's success in breaking into the mainstream is undeniable, yet its staying power with broader audiences remains a topic of contention.A Snapshot of a Moment in Rock HistoryReleased at a time when guitar gods like Eddie Van Halen and Yngwie Malmsteen were dominating rock, Surfing with the Alien carved out its own niche. Unlike the baroque complexity of Malmsteen or the blues-rock swagger of Van Halen, Satriani's approach was focused on melody and structure. While technically dazzling, his songs were crafted to stick in the listener's mind, often resembling vocal melodies translated to the guitar.Yet, the album's groundbreaking status also reflects a specific era. Its mix of virtuosic playing and synthesized production feels firmly rooted in the 1980s, which can be both an asset and a drawback depending on the listener. For those nostalgic for that era, Surfing with the Alien is a time capsule of innovation and possibility. For others, it may feel dated or too polished compared to the raw energy of vocal-driven rock bands of the same time. The Legacy of Surfing with the AlienSurfing with the Alien undeniably shaped the trajectory of instrumental rock. It reached number 29 on the Billboard 200, stayed there for 75 weeks, and went platinum—an astonishing feat for an instrumental album. Tracks like “Always With Me, Always With You” remain staples of Satriani's live performances, while “Satch Boogie” showcases his ability to blend technical prowess with funk-inspired grooves.Satriani's influence extends beyond his own discography. His teaching career helped shape the sounds of rock icons like Steve Vai and Kirk Hammett, and his innovations—like pitch axis theory—continue to inspire guitarists across genres. However, the debates surrounding the emotional impact and relatability of his music highlight the challenges instrumental albums face in achieving universal acclaim.Surfing with the Alien remains a touchstone for guitar enthusiasts and a divisive topic for others. It's an album that sparks both admiration and critique—praised for its melodic ingenuity and technical mastery, but also questioned for its ability to connect on a deeper emotional level. Whether it's a groundbreaking classic or a niche curiosity depends on where you stand in the conversation about instrumental rock. For those willing to dive in, Surfing with the Alien offers a ride through the outer reaches of what the guitar can achieve. Whether it leaves you awestruck or searching for something more, one thing is certain—it's a journey you won't forget.Songs in this Episode* Intro - Crushing Day * 18:44 -Right Thru Me - Nicki Minaj * 23:29 - Ice 9 * 25:03 - Surfing with the Alien * 26:18 - Echo * 27:28 - Satch Boogie * 29:27 - Hill of the Skull * Outro - Lords of KarmaMake Your Metal Voice Heard! In our quest to explore the depths of 80s metal, we rely on you, our listeners. S6E47 went out live on Rebel Rock Radio at 19h00 on 23 Nov 2023.  The live show was a bit of a disaster due to the fibre going down, I had to abort half way through.  The podcast however is great.  We kicked off with ‘Good Times' by Jimmy Barnes in a duet with the late great Michael Hutchins.  From there it was ‘all systems dogs' as Danie Maritz used to say.  We covered a wide range of rock and roll from around the world and across the decades.  See Artists featured below to check out who was on the show.   The Immortals track this week featured Guitar God Yngwie Malmsteen.   His Rising Force album left guitarists around the world gob smacked.  It was hard to believe anyone could play this fast with super human precision.  The Icarus Dream Suite is the prefect showcase of what Yngwie was all about.   This weeks Diabolical Challenge didn't get a lot of love.  It is interesting how many people that love rock and metal and know all the classic bands seemed to stop listening in about 2010.  I found it difficult to get any clear favourite out of these four.  Most people just had not listened to them: Foo Fighters – Concrete and GoldArch Enemy – Will To PowerKreator – Gods of ViolenceAccept – The Rise of Chaos  Artists featured:  Jimmy Barnes, Clutch, The L.A. One of the big acts on the 80's glam metal scene was Cinderella.  Singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Tom Keifer and bassist Eric Brittingham formed the band in suburban Philadelphia.  Gene Simmons of Kiss tried to get the band a deal with PolyGram, but was unsuccessful at getting the label to take interest.  Jon Bon Jovi was more successful with getting them a contract with Mercury/Polygram Records.  Keifer and Brittingham added guitarist Jeff LaBar and drummer Jim Drnec to the band.  Their debut album entitled Night Songs was released in 1986, and it achieved triple platinum status.  Shortly after the recording of that album, Jim Drnec left the group.  This, their follow-up album Long Cold Winter, would continue the band's progression in the glam metal genre, but would see a subtle shift towards more blues rock.  It would also see the introduction of Fred Coury as drummer for the group, though this would come after the album was recorded utilizing percussionist Cozy Powell for almost all tracks on the album.  This second studio album would be a commercial success as well, reaching number 10 on the US charts and achieving double platinum status before the end of the year.  The album included the rock ballad “Don't Know What You Got (Till It's Gone),”which would reach number 12 on the Billboard charts, the highest charting single for the band.  Video was a significant factor in the success of the band, and they released a video compilation in 1990 called “Tales from the Gypsy Road” featuring their promo videos and live medleys.Cinderella would be predominantly an opening band through the late 80's and early 90's, touring with Poison, Bon Jovi, and David Lee Roth.  Unfortunately the band would decline by the mid 90's due to various setbacks and drama with personnel as well as shifting popularity in the music industry.  Their last performance was in 2014.Break out the hair spray as Wayne leads us through this album. Bad Seamstress Blues/Fallin' Apart at the SeamsThe leading track to the album starts with an acoustic blues number paired with a heavier blues song, complete with slide guitar and harmonica.  The lyrics are of a life that has come full circle.  No regrets, but a mixture of success and sorrow.  “Look in the mirror at what I found, It's just the past and it's over now.”Gypsy RoadThese lyrics discuss perseverance to achieve success, but also the loneliness and doubt that come with realizing that dream.  The song is a composite of a life on the road, complete with hotel rooms and overnight rides on the tour bus.  This song hit number 51 on the Billboard Hot 100.Take Me BackThe final song on the album features blues instrumentation including the slide guitar and more cow bell!  The lyrics reflect on a younger life from a distance.  The singer reminisces about how he was raised and wanting to be reminded of what he left behind. ENTERTAINMENT TRACK:Axel F (Main Theme from the motion picture “Beverly Hills Cop”)This movie from the mid-80's made its debut on network TV this month. STAFF PICKS:Electric Blue by IcehouseLynch gives us a cool start to the staff picks with Australian band Icehouse's biggest US hit.  The lyrics tell the tale of a man pursuing the love of a woman who seems above his station.  “Icehouse” is an Aussie slang term for an insane asylum.  This song was written by lead singer/songwriter/multi-instrumentalist Iva Davies, and Jon Oates of Hall & Oates fame.Heaven Tonight by Yngwie Malmsteen's Rising ForceBruce features neoclassical metal guitar virtuoso Yngwie Malmsteen paired with the vocals of former Rainbow and Deep Purple front man Joe Lynn Turner.  This is off Malmsteen's fourth studio album, “Odyssey.” This album went to number 40 on the Billboard 200 charts, the highest charting Malmsteen album to date.Wait by White Lion Rob brings us a power ballad that peaked at number 8 on the US charts in May 1988.  It was originally released in June 1987, but did not enter the charts until February 1988, based on the strength of their video on MTV.  The video featured Christie Muhaw who died at the age of 24 in a car accident less than a year after the video was released.Damn Good by David Lee RothWayne's staff pick continues the blues focus  with a power ballad from Roth and 12-string work by virtuoso Steve Vai.  The lyrics were inspired by an encounter Roth had with an old high school friend who had some high school pictures.  It is a wistful song remembering friends and good times from the past.   NOVELTY TRACK:Killer Klowns by The DickiesWe close out this week's podcast with a track of punk rock's The Dickies.  This is off their EP and the movie "Killer Klowns from Outer Space. My guest today is singer David Reed Watson. This guy is one of the nicest guys I've had on the podcast. He's been singing for years but he was also in the advertising game. But before ALL of that, he was a Marine. While he was deployed to Egypt he had the opportunity to lay in the sarcophagus in the great pyramid of Giza. That changed his life. That and getting hit by a car.  He tells me how a severance package and a promise to his sister before passed away from Sjogren's Syndrome kick started his musical career. He also shares what the advertising world (including his role in the famous Truth campaign) and the smell of Burger King's french fries has taught him.David has been a part of many bands. I think the last count was sixteen. But his latest endeavor is my favorite, A Rising Force. Los principales temas fueron "Legacy of kings", "Heeding the call" y "Let the hammer fall". Se trata de "Last man standing", "Restless soul" y "The abyss".

Episode 32 of Season 4 aired on 12 August 2021.  It was a pretty mixed show with a healthy dose of bands that don't get a lot of airtime.  I am talking about bands like Chrome Division, The Hitchers, Hell Fire, and The Gaslight Anthem.  There were more live recordings than usual, The Rolling Stones, Volbeat, Alter Bridge, and Slade were all live recordings. There were also more new releases than usual, we checked out Dee Snider, Seether, Springbok Nude Girls, and Guns 'n' Roses.  Rock is alive and well even if Absurd by G 'n' R isn't quite what I had hoped for,  It's a grower.  The highlight of the show for me was 3 levels of heavy where we started with Skid Row's power ballad '18 and Life', moved into 3rd gear with Hell Fire, my new love affair our of San Francisco,  and ended in overdrive with SA metal monsters Sunken State.  Note that Hell Fire is not new, I just found 2 more albums I didn't have and I am Hell Fire befok.  The punk-ish stuff came courtesy of The Clash, The Jesus and Mary Chain, and Sex Pistols.  We were light on Aussie and Germany and light on SA as well.  I am not sure quite how we ended up with a show so different from normal.  Anyway to quote Jack Hammer, "Thats how we roll".   Check it out, see what you think, comments welcome as always, 'til next time, have a jol.  Artists featured:  Joe Bonamassa, Brides of Destruction, Sixx AM, Mötley Crüe, Wolfmother, Ratt, Poison, Lynyrd Skynyrd, the Gaslight Anthem, Chrome Division, Nevada Beach, Slade, The Rolling Stones, Gary Moore, Seether, MDFMK, The Hitchers, Led Zeppelin, ACDC, Guns 'n' Roses, Volbeat, Alter Bridge, Buckcherry, The Clash, The Jesus and Mary Chain, Sex Pistols, Smith/Kotzen, Yngwie J. Malmsteen, Springbok Nude Girls, Aerosmith, Velvet Revolver, Skid Row, Hell Fire, Sunken State, Zakk Wylde, Judas Priest, Foo Fighters, Faster Pussycat
