So...things are feeling more than a little fascist in the USA right now. Todo mal, pero no a falta de resistencia. This week we are re-running an episode from last year in which we talk about the global rise of fascism, historical context around the ebbs and flows of progress and backlash, and of course, the soundtrack of resistance. Whether it's the musicians who resisted the 1960's rise of right-wing dictators in Latin America as part of the Nueva Canción movement, artists who are making political resistance music today, or songs that might not be outright political at all, but help us see (and feel!) what a better future might look like—music is here to fuel us as we fight back. Latino USA has cycled through quite a few theme songs in its 30 years. There was the original theme, with acoustic guitar and soft woodwinds, followed by a brassier, more Latin Jazz influenced sound. There were even a few years when Latino USA didn't have a theme song at all, instead featuring unique scoring for each of its stories. In 2017, Latino USA teamed up with musical artist Xenia Rubinos to create a new song—and five years later, it's the same one you hear on our show today. In this episode, Xenia opens up about her creative process and how her own growth inspired a special 30th anniversary remix.

Una notita: This episode is in Spanglish. This season, we explored songs that tell the complicated, beautiful story of Puerto Rico. We wanted to bring that exploration into the present moment, so we called up some of the most innovative Puerto Rican artists making music today and we gave them a challenge: what would you do with these classic anthems? In this special bonus episode of the show, we go behind the music with the artists featured on La Brega: El Álbum — including RaiNao, Xenia Rubinos, ÌFÉ and Ana Macho. Plus, in an interview recorded live at On Air Fest, host Alana Casanova-Burgess speaks with Angélica Negrón and José Olivares of the band Balún, who composed music for La Brega and recorded a cover for the album. The band members talk about how they incorporated a broad palette of sounds and instruments into their score. “Balún es estar en la brega todo el tiempo,” Angélica explains. “Tener una banda entre diferentes lugares entre Puerto Rico entre San Juan … It's about that kind of layered complexity of ‘ni de aquí ni de allá,' pero de aquí, siempre, también.” They also unpack their cover of Sylvia Rexach's “Olas y Arenas,” featured on the album. For over a century, Puerto Rican musicians have been influential across the hemisphere. From the Harlem Hellfighters of WWI who helped develop jazz to the reggaetoneros who dominate today's charts, Puerto Rican music is everywhere. We start the season with the island's most celebrated composer Rafael Hernandez, who wrote beloved songs like “Lamento Borincano,” “Ahora Seremos Felices,” and “Perfume de Gardenias” – and one of the island's unofficial anthems, “Preciosa.” It's a love song written for Puerto Rico that praises the island's beauty and, remarkably, also calls out the forces that oppress it. When Bad Bunny exploded onto the scene and became the most-streamed artist in the history of the world, it became undeniable that Puerto Rican lyrics – the poetry of what people sing about, the bregas in every chorus – resonate all over the hemisphere. In September, he put out a music video for his hit “El Apagón,” (“The Blackout,”) which then turned into a mini-documentary about gentrification – the way people from the states are taking advantage of tax benefits and displacing Boricuas. It's called “Aqui Vive Gente" ("People Live Here"). “El Apagón,” has become somewhat of an anthem – an installment in the long tradition of Puerto Ricans singing about home, longing and belonging, popularized by Rafael Hernandez. But Bad Bunny isn't singing about yearning for Puerto Rico – his music is often about never even leaving in the first place. It's about staying, and creating a future for Puerto Ricans in Puerto Rico. If the video's Youtube comments – declarations of solidarity – are any indication, his music has touched on something deeply relatable across Latin America. On today's very special episode of Songmess we're talking to NYC's own reina of avant garde Latin experimentation, Xenia Rubinos. For over a decade, the Brooklyn-based Cuban-Puerto Rican artist has sculpted her own dizzying sound melding jazz, soul, rumba, and left-of-center references, becoming one of the city's most recognizable Latin indie stars alongside Buscabulla, Helado Negro and Ela Minus. Today's chat dives into Xenia's musical beginnings, her acclaimed 2021 album Una Rosa, her collage of inspirations ranging from drag queens to Rita Indiana, harnessing maximalism, composing for an experimental orchestra in Philadelphia, and more. We also examine the complexities of navigating indie spaces as a POC artist, and talk about her upcoming tour! We had a wonderful time with Xenia and the playlist absolutely pops off, so we hope you'll enjoy! Playlist: Xenia Rubinos, Turbo Sonidero, Kelman Duran, Arca. Ahead of the End of the Road festival in Dorset, England, Lynks, Xenia Rubinos, Bingo Fury and NewDad's Julie Dawson discuss the power of specificity when writing lyrics, how they find inspiration by writing from the perspective of fictional characters, and how the moment that you feel most creatively stuck is the moment just before you figure it out. Julie Dawson is the lead singer of the Irish alternative indie rock band NewDad. They formed as teenagers in Galway, inspired by bands such as The Cure and Pixies, and crafted a sound that brings together elements of shoegaze and dream pop. They've only released two EPs so far but are already creating a buzz with indie music fans. Lynks is regarded as a cult sensation in London's underground music scene. Known for their hard-hitting lyrics and incredible outfits, their exciting and unpredictable brand of industrial pop is selling out live shows across the UK, bring together music, drag and theatre. Xenia Rubinos is a singer, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist based in Brooklyn, New York, whose music combines aspects of R&B, electronic pop and Caribbean rhythms. With her powerful vocals and raw energy, she has been critically acclaimed for a sound that crosses genres and breaks boundaries. Singer and musician Bingo Fury conjures up dark experimental post-punk-inflected jazz. His way with words has been compared to American beat poets from the 1950s, and he's an exciting name in the diverse music scene of Bristol, UK.

Xenia Rubinos & El Individuo - Madrugada a 2022 single on ANTI-. Last year's album, Una Rosa, was so fantastic, artist Xenia Rubinos is revisiting it with reimagined versions of those tracks. Last year's single "What Is This Voice?” has been reworked into today's Song of the Day, "Madrugada," adding guest vocalist, Cuban rapper El Individuo. She told Stereogum: El Individuo had just arrived to NYC from Habana for the first time and came straight into this session without us ever having met and just blew us all away. It feels like the thaw of Spring, like the last frost leaving, like the first flower buds starting to poke through. In the lyrics he talks about dawn and the mysterious vale of those hours right before the morning light hits. I added in a Rhodes line in post production at the end of the track that kind of reminded me of the melody that clocks play, “Westminster Quarters” and the main riff from Mt. Airy Groove by Pieces of a Dream. Creating this rework in a whirlwind cypher with this supergroup of musicians felt like opening a secret trap door we found in the original song. Xenia Rubinos' evocative, electrifying voice is a singular one to say the least, and in her sophomore album, this year's Black Terry Cat, she has a set of songs that have just as broad of a musical spectrum. Painting with a hard-to-categorize set of sounds drawing from R&B to punk, Rubinos' return to KEXP is an engaging and rhythmic gem that vividly captures the musical and social experiences of the Brooklyn songwriter's Afro-Caribbean heritage.
