Canadian-Colombian singer-songwriter Lido Pimienta has had quite the year. Her 2020 album, Miss Colombia, earned a Latin Grammy Nomination, her first, as well as her first ever Grammy nomination at this year's awards, for Best Latin Rock, Urban, or Alternative Album. More recently, Pimienta became the first female composer of color to create a piece for New York City Ballet, scoring for choreographer Andrea Miller's new work, "sky to hold." She performed her commissioned score, which also marks her first theatrical work, live onstage. Pimienta joins us to discuss, and listen to, her work and achievements from the last year, and preview her upcoming tour.   Events Pimientia will be performing at Terminal 5 on November 15 and 16.

Lido Pimienta llega picante y adictiva tal cual como es el efecto de su estilo. Lido Pimienta is a Toronto-based, Colombian-born musician who won Canada’s biggest music prize, the Polaris Prize, in 2017. Her latest album, ‘Miss Colombia,' combines cumbia, reggaeton and latin folk with orchestral production and electronic beats.  In this interview, Lido talks about the inspiration for the album, from pageant culture’s racist and nationalist undertones to being teased about her hair in school. She also discusses her experience being of Indigenous Wayuu and African descent and learning to celebrate this mixed heritage through her music.  "Since I've been born, I've never known peace. I've never known respect for a culture. I've never known empowering of Indigenous communities. I don't know what it's like to see Black people truly free in my country.” Lido is doing her part to change that. Born in Sincelejo, Colombia, grew up in Barranquilla. Ariadna Gutierrez was born on Christmas Day, and is 26 years old. She grew up with her parents and four older siblings. An interesting fact is that she is a cousin of Miss Universe 2014 and Miss Colombia 2013, Paulina Vega. Family is very important to Ariadna. She has 10 nieces and nephews that she loves to spoil!Ariadna Gutierrez studied at the German School of Barranquilla, and she speaks Spanish, English, and German fluently. Ariadna described her childhood as being very good because her parents were able to give their family a great life. She is known as the cat lady because she has two cats she loves very much. She is currently living in Miami, Florida. She is working as a model for Elite Miami and has most recently modeled for the 2019 Sports Illustrated "Sweet 17."Ariadna now enjoys spending her days modeling, traveling and posting videos on her youtube channel which has over 150 thousand subscribers. Some of her videos are about modeling, makeup and skin care. Steve Harvey, as the host for Miss Universe 2015, mistakenly announced that Miss Colombia (Ariadna Gutierrez) was the winner. Several minutes later, and after Miss Colombia had been crowned, he came onto the stage to announce his mistake and name Miss Philippines (Pia Wurtzbach) as the winner. We discuss our impressions of the incident and how the contestants responded. Happy New Year! Dr. Carole takes you behind the headlines and gives you her psychiatrist's perspective, in the hopes of providing an oasis of sanity during these 'crazy' times. She delves into the Miss Universe pageant fiasco and the psychological scars this has left on Miss Colombia and the other contestants. To put this 'tragedy' into perspective, she then examines the mind of the driver who plowed into pedestrians just outside the doors of the Las Vegas pageant. Dr. Carole rants at the injustice of the Texas grand jury not finding the jailers liable for the alleged suicide of Sandra Bland. And she looks at the irony of two events occurring in Kenya related to terrorism: the Air France plane that made an emergency landing there and the bus that was attacked. She ends on this good news: the bravery of the Muslim passengers who protected the Christians by telling Al-Shabaab terrorists that they were not going to save themselves-they had to kill them all or leave them all alone.

World Footprints is excited to take you on a journey through Colombia, South America where “The Only Risk is Wanting to Stay”.  Miss Colombia is home to the 2015 Miss Universe and the country was the featured country in the 2011 Smithsonian Folklife Festival and also had a presence in subsequent Smithsonian Folklife Festivals.  World Footprints visited the country and met with some of the artisans and other participants who have been traveling to Washington, DC to share the country's treasures.  When some think of Colombia they reflect on Colombia's dark history with drug cartels and corruption.  However, we saw a very colorful face of this country--one that reflected it's rich cultural heritage and warmth of the communities we visited.  We traveled to historic cities, through the Gold Museum and to Monkey's Island in the Amazon. The memories we left with included the wonderful food, gracious hospitality, architectural and natural beauty.  We fell in love with Colombia and we hope that you will also be inspired to visit the country with an open mind and open heart.
