He is best known for his unforgettable dancing in the movie musicals of the 1930s, but in Music Makes Me, Todd Decker argues that Astaire's work as a dancer and choreographer—particularly in the realm of tap dancing—made a significant contribution to the art of jazz.   In 30 films from the 1930s to the 1950s, he danced elegantly—often to jazz--with the leading women dancers of the day including 10 times with fan favorite Ginger Rogers. Among his most popular movies were the timeless classics Top Hat,You Were Never Lovelier, and Swing Time.

Thanks for the good hang Ross!"Ancestral North: Spirituality and Cultural Imagination in Nordic Ritual Folk Music offers a detailed exploration of Nordic ritual folk music, a music scene focused on the revival of ancient folkways and archaic music that has found remarkable popularity around the globe. Once the domain of Viking reenactors and neopagan practitioners, the niche sonic and visual aesthetics of this music have found widespread visibility through a new generation of popular films, television series, and video games. The authors argue that many of these musical and media products connect with longstanding cultural attitudes about the Nordic region that conceive of it as wild, exotic, and dangerous, while also being a place of honor, community, and virtue. As such, the Nordic region and its music often becomes a vessel for reactionary escapes from all manner of modern discontentment. However, the authors also posit that spending time re-creating the music of an imaginary past offers participants the possibility for engagement and re-enchantment in the multicultural present."Link to the BookAnd more importantly, the 30% off code! - LXFANDF30Support the Show.

SynopsisOn this date in 1785, a new Piano Concerto in C major was given its premiere at the Burgtheater in Vienna, with its composer, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, at the keyboard.Years later, this piano concerto was labeled as Mozart's 21st, and given the number 467 in the chronological list of his works compiled by Ludwig Ritter von Koechel, an Austrian botanist, mineralogist and Mozart enthusiast.Today, this work is popularly referred to as the Elvira Madigan Concerto, for the simple reason that its romantic slow movement was used to great effect in a 1967 Swedish film of that name to underscore a passionate love story. That Swedish movie helped to bring Mozart's concerto to the attention of a far wider audience than ever before, as did the 1984 movie Amadeus, with Mozart's music in general.Musicologists might wince when they hear the title Amadeus. It's a matter of historical record that Mozart signed his name “Amadeo” or “Amadé.” Others object that a Swedish film should provide a nickname for one of Mozart's most sublime works — but, for better or worse, both Amadeus and Elvira Madigan are labels that seem to have stuck to Mozart's name and his concerto.Music Played in Today's ProgramWolfgang Amadeus Mozart (1756-1791): Piano Concerto No. 21; Alfred Brendel, piano; Academy of St. Martin-in-the-Fields; Neville Marriner, cond. The riddim making duo submitted a copyright documents for the 1990s dancehall hit song “Dem Bow” by Shabba Ranks in a Los Angeles Court, but Brian, speaking exclusively with WMV says that will not be enough to stake claim over and entire genre even if the riddim is similar to "Dem Bow" genre songs. A California judges set to decide if the case will go to jury on Thursday September 22 based on evidence presented by the plaintiffs and the dismissal request by lawyers the defendants which include Pitbull, Drake, Justin Timberlake, Karol G, Bad Bunny, Daddy Yankee and more. If the case goes to trial, a forensic musicologist like Brian will be called in to determine whether or not there is a common thread between 1800 reggaeton songs and Steely and Clevie's 1989 riddim 'Fish Market'. The San Fransisco native admits he is not acquainted with reggae and dancehall culture and only became interested upon hearing about the Steely and Clevie Case. He also says he has been hired by record labels and advertising companies to ensure there is not infringement in songs they may use. According to the Library of Congress, the term "rhythm and blues," often called "R&B," originated in the 1940s when it replaced "race music" as a general marketing term for all African American music - though it usually referred only to secular, not religious music. The term first appeared in commercial recording in 1948 (75 years ago), when RCA Victor records began using "blues and rhythm" music as a descriptor for African American secular songs. Since then, R&B has charted a remarkable trajectory of evolution, solidifying its position as a cornerstone of popular music and a reflection to cultural shifts. Its profound influence on musical expression can be traced through time, as artists consistently reimagine the genre's sonic landscapes and lyrical themes. Tavis is joined by distinguished musicologist Dr. Tammy Kernodle to unpack the intricate evolution of R&B – from its historical origins, to its enduring resonance in the realm of music today.

Which rock guitarist was the bridge between the first ‘Montrose album in 1973 with Ronnie Montrose and Eddie Van Halen and the Van Halen debut in 1978 ? In this exciting Podcast I am joined again by Musicologist and Rock Writer Martin Popoff where we look at the influence of the first Montrose album and and the four years in between before the first Van Halen album arrived and changed everything in 1978. Being based in the UK I have focused on guitarists from the USA as I was already a huge Ritchie Blackmore for example and Montrose was the first real Heavy Metal album from the USA. I put forward the idea that Rick Derringer was one of the most important guitarists during this period outside of the UK rock scene. But was he the bridge between the two? Will Martin agree? What other guitarists and albums will get a mention? Watch the podcast to find out! Phil Aston | Now Spinning Magazine

Musicology. The name of the 28th studio Album of legendary artist, Prince. Googling the name of it,  todays guest found that it in facts means "the scholarly analysis and research-based study of music." Nicc Johnson, who grew up on the island, promptly left his job as a DJ  after growing up on Ibiza, and went off to study.  He now runs a company called Music Health that looks at the way “music activates neurons in more regions of the brain than almost anything else scientists know of and causes the release of neurochemicals in our brains.” - Daniel J. Levitin. In todays conversation on my front porch, we explore the ways music holds centre-stage in the orchestra of our body and mind and plays an essential role to our health and wellbeing. How many hours a day do you listen to music? Did you know music can be a workout for the brain and make it fire in different ways that can be hugely beneficial for its long term health, performance and muscle memory? It was a huge honour to have this chat straight off the bat of Nicc´s TEDx Dalt Vila  here in Ibiza at Can Ventosa last week and when his talk video is ready on Youtube, we will add that link to these show notes so check back soon to see him in action on stage. As ever, if you enjoy this podcast, Please leave us a review on Apple podcasts or Spotify, it really changes the game in the way we are visible and found. Fancy learning to podcast in paradise? Musician and Musicologist Mike Daley joins host Paul Romanuk to talk about The Beatles much bootlegged and sort of, kind of, semi-officially released live recordings from The Star-Club in Hamburg, West Germany in 1962.SHOW NOTES:-we talk about it, but for a much more detailed account of the Star-Club tapes and how this whole mess came to be, check out this page-there are several versions of these tapes, the one we talk about was a Canadian release called Pickwick Star Club, Vol. 2. Here is a YouTube playlist that Mike put together of the version we talk about in this episode and the corresponding track order.-here's a page of images of The Star-Club from "back in the day". The building it was in burned down in 1987.-we talk about the so-called de-mixing technology that might be used to restore the audio that exists from the Star-Club shows. The best version of this technology as of this writing is the one that was used by director Peter Jackson for The Beatles Get Back film from 2021. It was also used to de-mix the instruments on the recent re-issue of Revolver, that were locked in on one track. Here's an article that explains how the technology works.-Here's Mike Daley's website: https://mikedaleymusic.com/

Hayao Miyazaki's Spirited Away is one of those rare films that is both super popular and super weird. Rife with cinematic non sequiturs, unforgettable imagery, and moments of horror, it is an outstanding example of a story form that goes all the way back to the myth of Psyche and Eros from Apuleius's Golden Ass, if not earlier. In this type of story, a girl on the cusp of maturity steps into a magical realm where people and things from waking life reappear, draped in the gossamer of dream and nightmare. Today, we are speaking with a very old friend of mine. He is one Jeffrey Thomas Cumpson. These days, he's a marketing professional and I also know him as a musical mastermind in such projects as The 9th Great Power and The Block Signals.I first met Jeff in the summer of 1989 on the ball fields in Hershey, Pennsylvania. Sports were always part of the fabric of our friendship and as time marched on, music also began playing a crucial role – fiddling around with a four-track recorder, writing our own songs, playing in high school variety shows and the like. For our conversation, we will be discussing in great detail John Hiatt and his eighth studio record called Bring the Family, which was released on May 29, 1987 for A&M Records. This was a pivotal moment in Hiatt's career, as it very well could have been his last chance in the music business.Welcome in and enjoy!

What do Wendy O. Williams, Jimi Hendrix, Kurt Cobain, Pete Townshend, Mike McCready, and Blake Wyland have in common? We have all SMASHED GUITARS as part of a public performance. This polarizing practice is so deeply integrated into music culture, and yet it is so frowned upon by a large swath of the music community. Is it ok? Is it terrible? Is it wasteful? Is it excessive? I had Kai West on to dissect this issue a little bit further. Kai is a Musicologist and PhD candidate at the University of Michigan.
