California is home to around 2 million undocumented people. And in Southern California, roughly 80,000 of them have DACA, Deferred Action Childhood Arrival (although some stats put that number higher). It allows people to get a work permit, to pay in-state tuition, and to get a drivers license. But there are a lot of freedoms it doesn't grant, like freely traveling outside the US. How to LA host Brian De Los Santos has had DACA for about a decade. He recently got approved to do something big: he's going to Mexico for the first time since he was 2 years old, through a process called advance parole. It's a travel permit that allows DACA recipients to leave the country and come back. However, the permit is issued with a very specific time window, and is only given for certain travel reasons. And the big one: it doesn't guarantee admission back into the country. But despite the stress, Brian's taking the opportunity to go Mexico and see family he hasn't seen since he was a toddler. In the first part of this series, Brian's bringing in a couple of his friends and fellow DACA recipients to talk about all of his hopes and fears for the trip, and what it's like to live with DACA in the U.S., which is very much like living in limbo every day. We've got more of Brian's story over on LAist.com, so be sure to check that out. As A DACA Beneficiary, I've Been Waiting For This Trip To Mexico All My Life If you have DACA and want to apply for advance parole, it's very important that you consult with an immigration attorney. #93: How to LA host Brian De Los Santos arrived in the U.S. from Mexico at the age of 2. He found out as a teenager that he was undocumented. Then he got DACA - deferred action childhood arrivals. He was able to get a driver's license, qualify for in state college tuition and establish a path to a good career. But even under DACA Brian wasn't able to the leave the county... until he qualified for something called “Advance Parole,” earlier this year. It's a program that allows DACA recipients to travel outside the U.S under certain conditions. Brian had, maybe, a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to go to his country of origin. In part 3 of the 3-part series, Finding Home con DACA, Brian returns to Los Angeles. But his ideas of "home" have changed.
I feel like a woman', de Shania Twain.

Mexican singer-songwriter Natalia Lafourcade embraces contrasts in her music. Look no further than her latest album, “De Todas las Flores,” where Natalia found herself both processing death and celebrating life. Prior to this, Natalia released a number of critically acclaimed albums that drew from Latin American musical history. Her journey led her to Carnegie Hall in New York City, where she premiered her latest music in a special live performance late last year. Just days before this show, Natalia sat down with Latino USA to talk about her new album, her career, and the value of slowing down to tend to one's inner garden.

Line Up : Liraz Charhi – chant, Gilad Levin – guitare, Eitan Drabkin – claviers, Amir Sadot – basse, Roy Chen – batterie. Claire Simon – traduction. Son : Benoît Letirant, Fabien Mugneret. Réalisation : Steven Helsly. ► Album Roya (Glitterbeat Records 2022).

A love song that knows no gender, “Mi Manera De Querer” was the last track Mexican mega-star Natalia LaFourcade wrote for her new album, “De Todas Las Flores.” Her first record of original material since 2015 is replete with lyrical poetry and exemplary craft alongside the stylings of New York guitar icon Marc Ribot.
Felix Contreras and Anamaria Sayre sit down with Natalia Lafourcade to talk about interpreting old songs, taking things slow and releasing her first album of original material in seven years.

As a solo artist, Grammy-winning Puerto Rican singer-songwriter iLe (Ileana Cabra) has explored the rich history of classic Latin American pop music, and she contributed vocals in the popular hip hop band, Calle13, with her brothers. Her new 2022 album, Nacarile sees her mixing boleros and ballads with reggaeton and synth pop for a collection of politically- and socially-conscious art-rock tinged with some psychedelia, whose intent is to sound more like the present, despite looking to the classic styles. There are also some unusual sounds on Nacarile: the eerie and expressive theremin; the all-female Mariachi band Flor de Toloache, and other collaborators like Natalia Lafourcade and Mon Laferte, as well as background vocal arrangements with textures that are lush and airy. The material takes on the elections in Puerto Rico as well as in the U.S., as well as that colonial legacy and its abuse of power. Also, there is a focus on the strength and power in femininity, especially in response to the patriarchy. The pioneering reggaeton star Ivy Queen makes an appearance on a protest song that speaks to the loss of women's reproductive rights worldwide. In an interview with NPR, iLe says: “Something pretty for me is that we have our own rights, and that we should be treated respectfully and that no one can say anything about what we can or can't do with our own bodies.” iLe and her band play some of these tunes, in-studio. - Caryn Havlik Set list: “Donde Nadie Más Respira”, “(Escapándome) De Mí”, “Traguito”

The multi-Grammy winning and internationally acclaimed Mexican artist Natalia Lafourcade joins Carmel Holt to discuss her first album of original material in seven years, De Todas las Flores. Natalia Lafourcade hails from the Mexican state of Veracruz. She is the daughter of two musicians, and grew up studying and playing several instruments, including piano, flute, saxophone, singing and guitar. Natalia joined her first band while still in high school, a pop music group called Twist, but came into her own within a few years, releasing her 2002 self titled debut - a combo of latin, pop, and bossa nova, which earned Natalia her first Latin Grammy award as best new artist. Over the past two decades, Natalia has gone on to win 13 Latin Grammys, and two Grammy awards, has been nominated nearly three times that number between the two awards, and has become one of the most successful singers to emerge from Latin America, earning international acclaim. Across her nine albums, Natalia evolved her sound from original songs rooted in pop, rock, latin rhythm, and bossa nova, to, in recent years, exploring more traditional music and songs of Mexico and Latin america. Now, twenty years after her debut, and seven since her last album of all original material, Natalia Lafourcade is back with her tenth studio release, De Todas las Flores - or, Of All the Flowers, which sees her stepping into a new realm of her sound and her songcraft with a new group of players including guitarist Marc Ribot, and Fiona Apple's bassist Sebastien Steinberg.
If you've been on Twitter in the past week, you may have noticed that the platform has been emanating some slightly different vibes. Mostly because everybody on there is talking about how Elon Musk just bought the place. There's no doubt Twitter—as a company and as a community—is in flux. So far Musk has already fired top executives, flirted with adding additional paid tiers of service, tasked employees with finding ways to make the company more money, and spread his own share of misinformation. This week on Gadget Lab, we talk with WIRED platforms and power reporter Vittoria Elliot about the changes coming to Twitter and how they may affect the future of the social network. Show Notes Vittoria covered the news of the takeover deal closing. Users are flocking to other platforms because of Elon's ownership of Twitter. Read more about the potential privacy risks that could arise from Elon cleaning house. Read Twitter users' reactions to the power shift. Mexican singer-songwriter Natalia Lafourcade has won more Latin Grammy's than any other female artist. Her most recent release, Un Canto por México, is nominated for Best Folk Album at next month's Latin Grammy Awards. And on October 28, she'll release a new album, called De Todas las Flores, which is her first album of all new music in 7 years. Lafourcade joins us for a Listening Party, and she previews her October 27 concert at Carnegie Hall.
Escuchar audio
