Light gun games are one of Matt's favorite generes to play! The passion started in the arcade of course, but as time went on, these games became better and better to play at home on your console and a good old CRT of course. Then we get into a new segment called evolution of a franchise and we chose Prince of Persia to kick things off! Enjoy! #arcade #retrogaming #retrogames #playstation #xbox #nintendo #sega Brief history of light gun games according to an AI! FUN!: Light gun games, also known as shooting games or target shooting games, have been around for several decades and have evolved greatly over time. Here is a brief history of light gun games: 1930s: The first light gun game was created by Sega in the 1930s. It was called "Periscope" and was an electromechanical game where players fired a gun at moving targets. 1960s: The first video-based light gun game was created in the 1960s. It was called "Duck Hunt" and was a simple game where players shot ducks on a screen using a light gun. 1970s: In the 1970s, light gun games became more popular with the release of games like "Wild Gunman" and "Shootout". These games used a CRT monitor and a light gun to simulate shooting targets. 1980s: In the 1980s, light gun games continued to evolve with the introduction of games like "Operation Wolf" and "Laser Ghost". These games used more advanced technology, such as digitized graphics and sound, to create more realistic gameplay. 1990s: The 1990s saw the release of popular light gun games like "Time Crisis" and "House of the Dead". These games used 3D graphics and were often played in arcade cabinets with mounted light guns. 2000s: In the 2000s, light gun games became more commonly played on home consoles like the PlayStation 2 and Xbox. Games like "Time Crisis 3" and "Virtua Cop: Elite Edition" were popular among console gamers. 2010s: The popularity of light gun games continued to decline in the 2010s, with fewer new games being released. However, some popular franchises like "House of the Dead" and "Time Crisis" continued to release new titles. Overall, light gun games have been a staple of video game history, offering players a unique and exciting gameplay experience. While their popularity has declined in recent years, they remain an important part of gaming history and continue to be enjoyed by many players today. "Bring the Arcade experience home!" is a marketing phrase shouted out constantly throughout the 80's and 90's that has embedded itself into everyone from that eras heads. These were sometimes either really good ports or spot on Onnes which we will discuss. As with anything else, this also opened the door for many duds that simply missed the mark and could not capture that arcade experience. In this episode Matt and Wes look at both some really good and really bad arcade ports! Please add about 30 seconds onto the timestamps due to the ad in the beginning of the show. Video games were not always the most consumed form of media on the planet. There was a time, not that long ago, where playing video games was just for the nerds. "Why don't you go out and do something?", was a common phrase many of us heard time and time again. However, once PlayStation began it's dominance in the mid to late 90's slowly but surely the tides of gaming be nerdy were turning. Soon playing video games would become main stream. This once nerdy niche not only became acceptable, but it became the cool thing to do. The Sega Genesis released in 1989, but it was not until Sonic the Hedgehog would release in June of 1991 that Sega would really begin to gain market share against Nintendo. The release of Sonic as well as an aggressive ad campaign, would lead to Sega bringing serious competition to Nintendo for the first time. Sega followed up the Genesis with creating the Sega CD which brought a new level of audio as well as improved visuals to the system. Unfortunately, Sega released the 32X shortly before the Saturn would release and would essentially mark the beginning of Sega retreating from console manufacturing. We discuss all of that and a whole lot more on this episode of the Nerdthusiast Gaming Podcast!
