A lot going on in La Crosse this weekend on both ends of the spectrum, as Jean Taylor and Josh Hertel both join to talk about two big events. First (7:15), Taylor breaks down this new two-day party called Big River Rally on Friday and Saturday at the downtown Oktoberfest grounds and beyond. Then Hertel joins (18:50) to talk about Coulee Con, this gaming extravaganza, happening Friday-Sunday at the La Crosse Center. Began the show, though, with a bit of a recap from the August primary, with the two Republican-written constitutional amendments being voted down, Tara Johnson and Rebecca Cooke winning Democratic primaries for state Assembly and US House. Big River Rally features a pair of concerts — Buckcherry on Friday and Jackyl on Saturday — stunt shows, a bike show, vendors, a veterans breakfast and a pair of rides through the Coulee Region, including one featuring WKTY's Bill Michaels and Jackyl's Jesse James Dupree. For more info and tickets, click here. And, at the La Crosse Center, the 10th annual and possibly last Coulee Con — a tabletop gaming convention that's put on by Hertel, who is also the president of Coulee Gaming Inc. Get tickets for Coulee Con by clicking here. One of the cool aspects that we discussed was how Hertel gets sent never-before-played games, sets up tournaments with them and the winner takes home the game, which may be one of a kind or the next big thing. Hertel says this will be the last Coulee Con — for now. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Gaming conventions like PAX, TooManyGames, and MAGFest have become bigger and bigger over the years. Toss in gaming-adjacent conventions like Momocon and Comic-Con, and sprinkle in ones run by the companies themselves like Blizzcon...there are so many. Noah Gibbs is a fellow tabletop gamer and Kansas City metro local. But he's got even stronger feelings about the local gaming and convention community than me. He's been working with a charity convention to raise funds for local causes for a few years. He still games regularly (I've lapsed). And, guess what, his connections at local gaming conventions led him to the Kansas City metro years ago. Folks he'd met at Kantcon helped get him established here. He met his wife. Now he's a proud dad, too. Find out more about Noah, his volunteer work at Meeple-a-thon, the joys of gaming and nonprofits ... and answer the question, “Sorry, umm, what's a meeple?” Note: This episode is a special bonus episode featuring a sponsor at our local game convention, Kantcon, which is dope and you should check it out every year. The 2024 one is July 5-7! For further enjoyment: Noah Gibbs is assistant director of Meeple-a-thon, which runs Sept. 27-29, 2024. In the area? Come play! Just want to donate? Click here! Meeple-a-thon is sponsoring the Paint and Take table at Kantcon July 5-7, 2024. (See? It takes a village to make conventions happen!) Meeple-a-thon supports various nonprofits (A Turning Point!), but its biggest recipient remains Hillcrest Platte County's Youth Housing Program. Noah's Paint and Take legacy predecessor is Michelle Farnsworth, whose commission website is “Mini Painter, Ink” here. Go check out her stuff! The miniatures Noah 3D prints are cat people from Kawna Minis. You can find them here. Recently Saul and Jolene were at a local Gaming Convention and at a RPG game and when the group broke for a quick dinner break, one player never came back. This has happened at gaming conventions and even in home game groups. What can a GM do to mitigate the affects of the missing player. Though usually more problematic at a Convention or in a One-shot RPG game there are things that you can do as a GM to make the session still go well. Saul and Jolene discuss what happened in their Star Trek game when the player playing the Chief Medical Officer did not come back from the break. Jolene discusses what she did when a key player in her Shadowrun 5th Edition game had to sit out in two session in a row. Why she cancelled one session but went without that character/player the 2nd time he had to cancel. Indeed it seems that for Saul and Jolene the fact that a character missing from the game might actually make the game more enjoyable since it requires more "thinking outside the box." Furries are a very diverse fandom, but there are a few interests that are shared amongst the community at large. One of those interests is gaming; the history between furries and gamers is rich, and while they are unmistakingly different fandoms, there are many things about the two groups that are in common with one another. Part of the experience for both fandoms includes their own conventions, and Finn had a chance to experience a local gaming convention, and compare and contrast one from that community and cons from the furry community!Follow Me On Twitter for Updates and Info about the Show: @FinnThePantherThank you for checking out the show! iTunes/Apple Podcast listeners: make sure to leave a rating and review!
