The importance of filtration and dehydration for the CNG, RNG and Hydrogen business - Daniel Routhier from Xebec Adsorption

This company, which started with basic natural gas dehydration products more than 53 years ago, is now at the top of renewable energy developments in 2020. With Innovation at its core their, purification solutions are already leading the way at many CNG, RNG, and Hydrogen facilities.Xebec is a company with air and gas purification and started in the dehydration business for natural gas, but afterward, they developed natural gas dryers in the ’90s.In 2004, new renewable gas purification divisions were created at Xebec, BGX for Biogas, and H2X for Hydrogen for their respective solutions and they're also experts in CNG station filtration and dehydration systems.Daniel explains that their adsorption systems work avoiding all of the moisture and dust to go into the compressor; the water will move to all of your piping, increasing corrosion; and ultimately can go into the vehicles implicating ulterior problems.According to Daniel, it is very important to have present that CNG Stations that receive RNG (Renewable Natural Gas) need to be very aware that depending on the technology being used to produce that RNG, the water content in those streams often have higher residual water content. Since this gas is not as dried, Xebec recommends a fully automated dryer that will regenerate every day. So from my perspective, countries that have not started having RNG injected into the grid, would eventually receive it, so having your station ready it’s a big deal.Daniel explains that what's coming next for Xebec is Hydrogen. There is a significant interest in using hydrogen as a transportation fuel and energy storage solution, and Xebec has the technology to purify Hydrogen up to 99%, which positions the company in a wonderful place for the next few years. Here’s what we discuss in this episode:How Daniel Routhier got into the Natural Gas Business (3:39)About Xebec and the Biogas, Hydrogen and Natural Gas Divisions (5:30)What’s the importance of filtration and drying at your CNG station(11:00)About water content while compressing natural gas (16:15)What happens if your CNG station doesn’t have a dryer (21:15)What are the special filtration needs for RNG refueling stations (29:45)About the importance of tackling the small-size dairy farms and Biogas producers (36:05)On the focus of Hydrogen for Xebec (37:45)Resources:Check the Xebec Website Reach out to Daniel on LinkedInXebec on Twitter

We are talking about 2,000 landfills, 8,000 large farms, and more than 17,000 wastewater treatment facilities where best case scenario there is a system in place capturing some of the Biogas, and maybe generating some power for its own operation, but worst case scenario it’s being flared or maybe even vented.Over the course of this enlightening conversation with Johannes, it was demonstrated that Renewable Natural gas is facing technical impediments and several cost barriers, but we can clearly see at this moment, that RNG is an amazing and sustainable solution, and hundreds of projects continuously producing this fuel are the proof that it works. This is what we discussed on the podcast:How were the beginnings at the State Assembly for Johannes (1:50)About the first renewable natural gas project in the United States (7:15)How the Renewable Portfolio Standards (RPS) programs impacted the ecosystem (9:20)What’s the potential for Renewable Natural Gas projects on LandFills, Farms and Sewage (17:10)How to deal efficiently with consensus on an association (21:24)What are some efforts that the coalition have advocated for (26:30)What is Renewable Natural Gas (30:30)How RNG is driving Natural Gas Vehicle adoption (35:30)Why Renewable Natural Gas injection was banned from California since 1988 46:06Resources:RNG Coalition websiteA great website aggregating RNG Content - RenewableNaturalGas.infoJohannes Escudero Linkedin ProfileWhat is the RNG Coalition

In this episode we get the chance to talk to Ryan Chan. He is the CEO & Founder at Upkeep Maintenance Management, a company that developed a really amazing Maintenance Application suite that works perfectly for the NGV Industry.Ryan started as a process engineer at a manufacturing facility, but he quickly realized that optimizing uptime and minimize breakdowns and got into the maintenance rabbit-hole. As a result of this he got into the place that many of us faced for many years, where the existing CMMS presented this great desktop-based solutions where the work orders were filled in paper out in the field and then those had to be transcribed and re-entered into these CMMS; instead of making their days easier, they were getting more difficult. He taught himself to code and started this great journey of developing a unique CMMS that enables mobility as a main feature; mobile-first as they call it. The driver for Ryan is to do unique things and create something that’s never been done before, as well as providing value to the customers and impacting customers lives with the correct support. The best way to understand Upkeep is to test it. See by yourself how Upkeep can help your CNG / LNG Business, start by giving it a try. Watch the videos and read the full notes at ricardocarmona.io When a CMMS gets deployed in big teams, is really interesting how you get groups to buy in the idea and then once they try it, great things start to happen. But particularly in our industry, safety is key because many teams our staff is sujected to potentially life threatening situations. The basic focus here, is to plan against any kind of situation. The application helps you in this sense also by getting a better audit trail of who’s done what and why. A super useful feature is the Lockout - Tagout (LOTO) enforcement. It has become really critical to safety and a particular way to enforce it is through software. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pfBsAE8ydEoHaving a platform that helps your crew to do the exact things, at the correct times, step by step is also key to increase safety. We talk in this episode about how our CNG or LNG stations must have an inner culture to submit requests and notify breakdowns immediately in an orderly fashion. This because we can acknowledge exactly and fix accordingly. Not just promote reporting, but increase visibility and proceed to prioritise whats really urgent and reduce downtime finally by simply changing the mindset. Our industry is filled with requests that need to be solved immediately in order to not affect the sales. Doing all this with paper, retyping, is counter-productive. Compare that with mobilizing and modernizing, with pictures, descriptions, and notifications in real time. It’s all about streamlining communications and speeding up the response from notice to resolution, because the bottomline is that every minute counts.A good CMMS must bridge the gap between the data and you to analyze and then the tools to create a workflow, to take actions when things happen. We talk also about unmanned facilities and how Upkeep can be the tool to manage maintenance even in lights-out factories. The recent trends for software is to have very specialized software that generate different datasets, and those different service providers need to have the ability to send out and receive information thus being capable of being an integrated hub.Upkeep achieves that with their Open API platform:https://www.youtube.com/watch?time_continue=700&v=V

In this episode we chat with Matt Bonelli. He is the Vice President and co-founder of Adsorbed Natural Gas Products Inc. a company dedicated to develop adsorbed natural gas (ANG) cylinders since 2012. We go deep into understanding the amazing Adsorption Technology which allows a porous carbon activated volume to use all the internal surface areas and enable to store more natural gas with a lot less pressure than using the regular “empty tank” configuration. The real advantages of using adsorption technologies come from the savings of requiring only 900psi. That, put together with the activated carbon technology created by Ingevity requires no reheating to extract all natural gas, or cool off to refuel. Even when the carbon activated designs Matt talks about the incentives put in place for Electric Vehicles and how natural gas vehicles compares with that technology. For an existing CNG station that want to refuel to an ANG tank, the only requirement is to have is basically a regulator that drops down to 900psi. But when developing a new station for ANG, requires a lot less initial capital cost, and of course lower maintenance costs. A different size of CNG nozzle and receptacle is put in place to avoid confusions with +3,000psi tanks. Here’s what we discuss in this episode:How Matt became familiar with the CNG technology in Pennsylvania and New Jersey, and the advantages of home refueling (4:05)How exactly adsorption technology works (6:19)How the adsorbed natural gas technology compares with regular refueling technologies, and what does the product need to extract optimally the most amount of natural gas (10:22)Are the ANGP tanks commercially available, and what are the standards involved for ANG, and more pilot programas with Socalgas in California and Southern Company gas in Atlanta (22:45)What modifications are required on the dispenser side, and how would look a station developed for ANG (35:50)What is the roadmap for Adsorption Technology, and what future holds with the convenience of Adsorbed Natural Gas Products (41:25)Resources:ANGP Inc. websitePictures and the tech behind it(VIDEO) Plug-in Hybrid Adsorbed Natural Gas Vehicle(VIDEO) 4 cylinder arrangement - F150 with Ingevity activated carbon
