Hey Sports Fans! Welcome to KEEP IT WEIRD, the podcast for all things strange & unusual, ancient & archival, regal & rickety and everything in between!   TW: big bugs, mental illness, euthanasia, cancer, curses   Every week we get together to chat about something WEIRD and this week is very special because we're celebrating the birthday of one of the world's finest weirdos - - your host LAUREN!    We had a wild start to the episode where we were both ATTACKED by bugs (the bugs were in our room) but once we recovered from the drama we were able to dive into this week's topics.   Ashley starts us off with an ANCIENT ARTIFACTS (with Addie Rife!) where she teaches us all about the Iron Pillar of Dehli-- an ancient monument that is somewhere between 1600 and 2300 years old, made of solid iron, that still has not rusted TO THIS DAY!  And speaking of ancient artifacts and metal!  Last month, scientists at CERN accidentally discovered the secret to the Philosopher's Stone.  YOU HEARD ME!     Lauren takes over for a JEEPERS CREEPERS where we dive into a very rare (and very scary) mental health disorder known as CLINICAL LYCANTHROPY aka real life werewolves.  And were...frogs???     To wrap the show the girls pass some MIND BLOWING FACTS back and forth like the time that Mark Ruffalo had a psychic vision, how monkey's find medicinal marvels, the true inspiration for Bluey and more.   Check the links below if you want to do some more in depth reading on today's topics.   FOLLOW US on socials @keepitweirdcast   JOIN OUR PATREON at www.patreon.com/keepitweirdpodcast - You'll get two extra episodes every month, discounts on merch, opportunities to sponsor an episode AND free tarot card readings!    SUBSCRIBE TO OUR CHANNEL at www.youtube.com/keepitweirdpodcast   BUY OUR MERCH www.keepitweirdpodcast.com/merch   UNRUSTABLE IRON https://www.britannica.com/topic/Iron-Pillar-of-Delhi https://www.good.is/mysterious-iron-pillar-hasnt-rusted-despite-being-out-in-the-open-for-over-1-600-years https://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/travel/things-to-do/udayagiri-caves-the-hidden-architectural-wonders-of-madhya-pradesh/articleshow/104626429.cms   I LOVE GOOOOOOLD https://www.the-independent.com/news/science/large-hadron-collider-lead-gold-b2749928.html   HOWLING AT THE MOON https://ijip.in/wp-content/uploads/2024/03/18.01.190.20241201.pdf https://www.mentalfloss.com/article/29073/8-historic-accounts-werewolves https://www.britannica.com/science/lycanthropy                 ReplyForward   Add reaction

Send us a textOn Inside Geneva this week, we ask whether the United Nations (UN) and multilateralism have a future.“Is the UN anachronistic? I mean, it was formed after the Second World War. Obviously, it's getting a little bit dusty,” says political analyst Daniel Warner.Younger generations from the Global South tell us wherethey see the UN's flaws. “The countries of the Global North have not stood up to the ideals that they have created in an equitable manner. It's simply like preaching water and drinking wine,” says Pratyush Sharma from the Global South Centre of Excellence in Dehli.“The United Nations Security Council is absolutely inefficient in dealing with the reality of people, especially from the Global South,” continues Marilia Closs from Plataforma CIPÓ in Brazil.“The Global South cannot exist on its own. Likewise the Global North also cannot exist on its own,” says Olumide Onitekun from the Africa Policy and Research Institute in Nigeria. But the UN was created for very good reasons.“When you think about the end of the Second World War and how the UN was created, the world was so sick and tired of war, they wanted it to end. It's a different mindset. You know, it just makes me think, is that what we're going to need?” says Dawn Clancy, UN journalist in New York. Can the UN survive? Delhi, India Part 2 In this episode, your FAQ is: Safety in India for solo travelers Today's Destination is: Delhi, India. Part 2 Today's Misstep- Cellphone issues that were my fault and more Travel Advice: Safety tips for travel in Delhi. FAQ: Let's talk about safety in India. My friend Kathryn is going to Delhi and is worried about being a solo woman. Can I talk to her about what she can expect? The short answer is that Kathryn is already back home, and she had a great trip, but she was nervous and needed confirmation that all would be well. Today's destination: Delhi, India Part 2 One of the best parts of India…and Aero City Let's discuss a region of Delhi called Aero City.  It's really close, just minutes from the airport. Indira Gandhi International Airport, that is. It's well connected to the rest of the city through the Airport Metro Line. And you can get to places in the center of Delhi, like Connaught Place, in about 25 minutes. Aerocity is a top priority for safety and security for female travelers, with state-of-the-art cameras, staff, and surveillance. The hotels and surrounding public spaces are really nice. Aero City was full of what's new about India. There are hotels, shopping centers, and restaurants. I felt Safe being here. I took the AirPort Express Metro to Aero City and walked for about 6 minutes in the 105-degree heat. Drenched in sweat, the pool was on my mind when I arrived! It made the walk bearable! There were girls and sisters in the pool, my new friends, ages 8 and 11. They were in the room next to me and on School holidays in Dehli—a break for the families and fun for me.  Today's Misstep: Cellphone issues:  Here is when I discovered my cellphone issues with Airalo and why my WhatsApp was not working! India is not in the Asia plan! That was my failure! I did not have internet service when out of Wi-Fi coverage in India.  Something with the eSIM, Airalo plan, which was not covered under “All Asia”. I need to tell them to label that better. If you want to sign up for the plan I have used worldwide, get $3.0ff with the code MARY2856.  Today's Travel Advice- Dehli Safety Tips Dress Conservatively: Especially in urban villages and when visiting religious sites Avoid Crowded Areas at Night: Stick to well-lit and populated areas, and avoid walking alone at night Be Aware of Your Surroundings: Keep an eye on your belongings and be cautious of pickpockets and scams Use Trusted Transportation: Prefer pre-paid taxis, Uber, or Ola, and avoid accepting rides from unknown drivers Act Confident: Walk with confidence and firmly decline any unwanted attention or offers Connect with Dr. Travelbest 5 Steps to Solo Travel website Dr. Mary Travelbest X Dr. Mary Travelbest Facebook Page Dr. Mary Travelbest Facebook Group Dr. Mary Travelbest Instagram Dr. Mary Travelbest Podcast Dr. Travelbest on TikTok Dr.Travelbest onYouTube In the news

Delhi, India Part 1  In this episode, the FAQ is: My listeners ask: How do I check for the weather where I'm going?    Today's Destination is: Delhi, India   Today's Misstep- Stuck in India and missed the bus   Travel Advice: Ask a group of people for directions   FAQ: You asked me how to get the most reliable weather forecast:   Here's how> Use apps like AccuWeather, weather.com, and windy or local services, with hourly and long-range forecasts, radar maps, and severe weather alerts. For more local alerts, sign up for location-based apps on Google Weather or MyRadar.  Look for seasonal patterns that are already known. Goa, India has monsoons from June to September. Wind and rain forecasts like windy.com will tell you the wind and wave conditions, especially to help with beach plans. Check for Cyclone Warnings in places like coastal India.   Answer: Reliable Weather Apps and Websites: For accurate forecasts, use apps like AccuWeather, Weather.com, Windy, or local Indian weather services (like IMD). Many offer hourly and long-range forecasts, radar maps, and severe weather alerts. Localized Alerts: Sign up for location-based alerts on apps like Google Weather or MyRadar, which provide real-time weather updates for your location. This can be especially helpful for any sudden coastal storms or cyclones. Seasonal Patterns: Since you're going to Goa or nearby coastal regions, familiarize yourself with local weather patterns. For example, Goa experiences the monsoon season from June to September, with dry and sunny weather from October to March. Wind and Rain Forecasts: Coastal areas are affected by both rain and wind speed. Windy.com offers detailed wind and wave conditions, which can help with beach plans. Check for Cyclone Warnings: Especially in coastal India, monitor IMD's cyclone warnings as they provide updates on tropical storms that may affect Goa. Lastly, social media can help by using WhatsApp groups to get firsthand information from locals. Today's destination: Delhi, India Part 1 My visit to Delhi, or New Delhi, India  Which is it? New Delhi when referring to the specific district that serves as India's capital. New Delhi is a planned city developed during British rule and officially designated as the capital in 1931. Delhi refers to the larger metropolitan area, encompassing both New Delhi and other historical and residential parts like Old Delhi, which includes the Red Fort and Jama Masjid. Delhi is the correct term when speaking broadly about the city and its culture, so we will use that one here. After two weeks in India, visiting four southern cities, I flew north to Dehli from Goa, barely missing the seasonal monsoons. My flight had a Female co-pilot who Said hello to me with a big smile, which made me happy to see a woman pilot there.   The flight attendants checked my boarding tickets. Again, getting off the plane! That was a first. Who checks them getting off the plane? Should I take a Bus, train, or taxi to Agra? Even after arriving, I could not decide. I was overwhelmed with the decisions, but I knew I had to get there.  A taxi costs at least $6000 rupees each way, maybe more. Although this sounded like a lot, it was only $72 USD. Bus or train may be best. However, the temperature is

Chitra Agrawal is the Founder of Brooklyn Dehli, an Indian-American condiments brand. She founded Brooklyn Dehli to bridge cultures by connecting consumers to authentic Indian flavors. Chitra is the author of the cookbook Vibrant India: Fresh Vegetarian Recipes from Bangalore to Brooklyn. For over 15 years, she has taught and written about vegetarian food rooted in her Indian heritage. In this episode… People often launch CPG brands after identifying a gap in the market, but others do so to fulfill a personal need. When taking this route, recognizing and connecting with your ideal customer can prove challenging. Hear how a CPG entrepreneur influenced by her cultural background brought her brand to the mass market. Fueled by a desire to introduce Indian cuisine and flavors to the world, Chitra Agrawal established a personal vision for her brand uninfluenced by conventional market products. Although her brand didn't scale at a traditional pace, she was able to forge her own path and control the direction of her growth. And does anyone want to be one anymore?Chloé Caillet is always talked up that way in the press, but there's a lot more to her than a residency at Circo Loco. One of house music's breakthrough DJs of the post-pandemic era, Chloé has really become a big name on the circuit in a way that transcends the pigeonholing that, in fairness, just about everyone in this position has to deal with to some extent. We discuss her formative years in Paris and Bristol, as well as her time in New York going to party's like former NDP guest Taimur's Blkmarket Membership.Chloé is a classically trained musician so we get deep into that debate. We also cover the AI-in-music questions, the looming changes in music tech and the wider industry, as well as the more recent ones too.I hadn't met Chloe before this conversation and it was great to be able to shoot the breeze with her on some crucial stuff. In this episode, FAQ is: I'll be going to India soon. What are some ways to prepare for that trip? Today's Destination is Reykjavik, Iceland Today's Mistake- Biggest Windstorms in Iceland Travel Advice:  Save Money by grocery shopping   FAQ: I'll be going to India soon. What are some ways to prepare for that trip? Answer: To prepare for a trip to India, see if you know anyone who lives there now. It's the world's most populated country. Consider talking to them about your travel plans and what you want to do. I visited six cities, starting in Chennai and then Kerala on the opposite coast. Then, I ventured north to Hyderabad. After that, I went to Goa and then to Agra and Dehli. The cities where I had a connection or contact made me travel better. You can read the guidebooks, watch the YouTube videos, and do your homework first. Have a plan or goal for your trip; if your mission is world peace, like mine, let me know how you prepared. Even though I had planned the trip for years in my mind, there's nothing like going and preparing for the trip while on the trip, too. Listen for some future episodes on India with Dr. Travelbest.   Today's destination: Reykjavik, Iceland   Reykjavik, the capital of Iceland, is known for its stunning natural wonders, but it also boasts cultural gems. Stroll through the colorful streets of the Old Town, visit the iconic Hallgrímskirkja church, and explore Reykjavik's vibrant arts scene at Harpa Concert Hall. For a breathtaking exploration of Iceland's unique geological features, embark on the Golden Circle route, which includes Thingvellir National Park, Geysir Geothermal Area, and Gullfoss Waterfall. Don't miss the opportunity to relax in the soothing waters of thermal pools, natural and manufactured.   If you plan on exploring Iceland's vast wilderness solo, consider safety. Inform someone of your plans, equip yourself with a fully charged phone, and stay updated on weather conditions. The Icelandic Touring Association provides valuable resources for ensuring a secure and enjoyable solo adventure in the country's stunning landscapes.   Despite its chilly climate, Iceland is known for its warm hospitality. Engage with locals at cozy cafes, attend cultural events, and embrace the friendly atmosphere of Reykjavik's pubs. The Icelandic people's warmth transforms solo exploration into shared experiences, fostering connections that make your journey memorable.   Take advantage of the opportunity to savor the flavors of Icelandic cuisine in Reykjavik's eclectic restaurants. Indulge in fresh seafood from the grocery store called Bonus, or sample traditional dishes like lamb soup and yogurt-like skyr (pronounced Skeer) at local eateries. Reykjavik's culinary scene is a delightful exploration of Nordic tastes, complemented by the warmth of cozy establishments.   Immerse yourself in Iceland's cultural offerings by attending local events and festivals. From music concerts to collegiate sporting events, these experiences provide perspective to your solo Nordic adventure, connecting you with the vibrant spirit of Iceland.   Take time to relax amidst Iceland's stunning landscapes. Find solace in the city's hot springs, indulge in a spa day at the Blue Lagoon or at the public pools, where the fee is only $3.00 to visit, or simply marvel at the beauty of the Northern Lights (the Aurora Borealis), during the winter months. I met someone who saw these in September.  Let the magic of Iceland's natural wonders be a backdrop for personal reflection and rejuvenation.   Reykjavik was founded in 874 by Norwegian Vikings, who discovered the area's geothermal vents and established their first homes there. The city's name, Smoky Bay, comes from the fierce weather that has caused many to perish in the storms here over centuries. Today, Reykjavik has a population of 181,000 and is a walkable city with many tourists. The city is filled with flowers in the summer, and the long summer days make for short flying times to New York, Seattle, and DC.   Reykjavik is the main city in Iceland, a must-visit for those seeking an alternative attitude, fresh produce, and innovative chefs. Other notable attractions include Hallgrimskirkja, eco-consciousness, geothermal swimming pools, and beaches, moonscapes close to town, and a monument to the Vikings on the waterfront.   Iceland's exports include fish, and the country has a parliamentary democracy and hydrogen-powered transport expertise. The energetic and uninhibited culture, a mix of Scandinavian and Celtic origins, offsets the high cost of living. The popular discussion topics are Icelandic sagas, elves, whale watching, horse riding, hiking, and hot dogs with remuladi and mayonnaise sauce.   Today's Mistake- Biggest Windstorms in Iceland   My sister and her husband went to Iceland in February 2020. They hit a big storm season and had trouble with all of the plans they had made. Be prepared for weather adjustments. I was there in August 2023, and the weather was mild. T-shirts and light sweaters were all that were needed. Today's Travel Advice-Save Money by grocery shopping   In Iceland, you can find prices exceptionally high, especially in restaurants. I could save much money if I made at least one meal daily from things I bought at the grocery store. I stocked up on chocolate for gifts for the family, too.   Connect with Dr. Travelbest   5Stepstosolotravel.com Drmarytravelbest.com Dr. Mary Travelbest Twitter Dr. Mary Travelbest Facebook Page Dr. Mary Travelbest Facebook Group Dr. Mary Travelbest Instagram email: info@drmarytravelbest.com Dr. Mary Travelbest Podcast Dr. Travelbest on TikTok Dr.Travelbest onYouTube

Special Editions of Dr. Travelbest Podcast: Part 1 and 2    Responses to Your Questions….. About the Around the Globe adventure that I recently took.     1. Tell me about your 90-day adventure. How long had you waited to go on this adventure?   I took a 90-day trip to every time zone in the world, starting in San Diego to the Philippines, Asia, and finishing in Iceland. It was from May 7 to August 7 when I arrived in Seattle. I was on 18 airlines, flew out of 25 airports, and had 70 roommates at 16 hostels and 17 hotel/AirBNB's.   I had been planning it for about 15 months. It started out by thinking about round-trip airline tickets and why not just keep going all the way around the world.   2. What were some challenges you faced during the courageous adventure?   I have a terrible sense of direction. I get lost a lot. There was a lot of mental challenge ahead. I also broke my wrist last May, which was a physical bump. or maybe it made me more human and realize that my bones are more brittle.   I did not have any role models for this trip. I have never met someone who did this before.   During the trip, one day in Italy, I fell. I was standing and then went to take a step, but the step was higher than I thought, so I tripped myself in my long dress. No one was there to see me fall. I injured my back, my wrists and bruised my shin. However, I was ok, with a few cuts and eventually healed. It was July 4th. I was not sure I was going to continue the trip. But I did and I'm glad for that.   3. Why did you go Solo?   I've been solo before; as early as age 15, I went solo to NY. I stayed there for three weeks with friends, pre-cell phone days. What an experience that was. Now seemed the best time for me, as I'm an empty nester, and my husband did not want to travel out of the USA. If I hadn't gone now, I might have missed the window of access, health, and courage that it took. Solo because I didn't know anyone with the same availability and mission.   4. What did you hope to achieve on this mission?   1. My primary mission was to bridge cultural understanding through peaceful interchange with locals around the world.  I joined a non-profit organization called SERVAS, which stands for "SERVICE," and several families hosted me in 5 of the countries, where I stayed for up to two nights for no cost. It was a way to live like they do and see their lives firsthand. This organization is all volunteer-run, started after WW2 and the mission was relevant to my outreach. I also tried to inspire other female travelers to go places, even if it was uncomfortable at first.   2. I've written several books on solo travel, so I'm gathering content for the next books in the series.   3. As a professor, I'm naturally curious, so I wanted to see what marketing looked like in these regions of the world outside of my current experience.     5. What is the treasure that you returned with?   The treasure is outside of counting countries or sites visited. The treasure is in the stories that came from the people I met.   One of the comments I heard often was I needed to learn how to pack light, so I tried to teach others how to do this. I carried a “personal item” weighing less than 15 lb./7kg, and it was a small backpack that could go under the airplane seat in front of me. I was on a budget, and this saved hundreds of dollars in baggage fees.   6. How did you navigate language barriers and cultural differences? Tell us a couple of stories.   In my first country, the Philippines, my daughter, age 28, met me at the airport from Taiwan. She and I traveled for the first week together. That was great as a starting point. She returned to Taipei, and I went to Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam. It wasn't until ten weeks later that I landed in an English-first country and could easily converse. I used a lot of gestures and facial expressions and tried to learn a few words in each country.   In Agra, India, I met a SERVAS host family who was having a wedding. Their daughter was betrothed in an arranged marriage, and I was invited to attend. I was, unfortunately, unable to go to the wedding, but the morning I left, we got stuck in traffic (which included cows, rickshaws, and semi-trucks), and I saw but missed the bus to Dehli. However, we had a high-speed chase and caught up with the bus at the next stop about 10 miles away. It was dramatic and quite an adventure that was unexpected.   In Tel Aviv, Israel, I was hosted through SERVAS by a mom and her two kids. We went to a peaceful protest rally with plenty of kids and dogs in the community square, where I did not understand any of the speakers, but by being there, I knew that they cared about their community and rights.   Listen to the next episode next week for Part 2 of this Special Edition. Städer lades i ruiner.
