Mike Gellman, the founder of High Five Career Coaching, specializes in collaborating with nonprofit executives and leaders for them to reach their full potential. In this conversation, Mike and May Harris, Esq., MA, explore the essential qualities needed for effective nonprofit leadership and discuss the available resources to support these executives. They also weigh the merits and drawbacks of transitioning from the corporate sector to nonprofit work, delving into the intriguing idea of how nonprofits, often considered competitors, can form beneficial alliances. IN THIS EPISODE: [1:19] Mike explains how he became involved in the nonprofit sector and why he founded High Five Career Coaching, which serves nonprofits [5:10] Mike reflects that nonprofits have the same types of problems to deal with as corporate entities. It is just a matter of scale. [9:50] Discussion regarding the nonprofit mastermind and advisory boards [15:55] What should an executive working in a corporate job consider before moving to a nonprofit, and what are the advantages of taking a nonprofit position [24:00] Mike discusses nonprofits dovetailing with each other and sharing resources, deciding they are not in competition but can help each other KEY TAKEAWAYS: [5:00] Nonprofits face significant challenges in determining their desired direction, employee motivation, and securing funding streams. [11:53] Having an advisory group is advantageous for a director as it provides a secure space to discuss matters they might be hesitant to share with their board. [15:42] Transitioning from a corporate role to a nonprofit position requires acknowledging that nonprofit salaries are generally lower than those in the corporate sector, and the resources available may differ from those found in the corporate world. In such a move, executives might take on a more hands-on role in various tasks. However, the upside is there is less bureaucracy, and it can be a great career accelerator with less oversight and the ability to accomplish much. As we age, our social networks tend to shrink, leaving us feeling disconnected from the world around us. And that can take a toll on someone's mental health. But recent studies have shown this feeling of loneliness is also linked to an increased risk for heart disease, dementia and early death in older adults. That's why a coalition here in California is working to change the way we address aging, by bridging the gap between health and social care. The next generation of culinary artisans are changing up the industry. These artisans have a whole new approach to reaching and satisfying the next generation consumer. In this podcast we will explore chefs and artisans from around the world diving into their story and passion. In this episode of Chef AF, I chat with Andrew Gibson, Senior Manager at Energy Solutions about the California Instant Rebate Program and how it can lower operating costs with high efficiency equipment. Gibson oversees all of the food service outreach. He works directly with the market to help them understand rebates. Gibson trains the market on how rebates are beneficial, how they help the environment and how it can help the health and welfare of communities. I ask Gibson to explain how the program works and he says, “the California Instant Rebate Program is a midstream food service program. It just started last April and it's delivered really reliable and cost-effective savings to our customers that are purchasing food servers equipment. The nuts and bolts of the program is if you're a customer, if you need to buy food service equipment that is in one of those rebate qualified categories, you would go to wherever you would purchase your equipment and upon making that purchase at that moment you would be able to receive that rebate.” Gibson goes on to say it is like receiving a discount because it is an instant rebate. The customer does not have to fill out any paperwork to receive the rebate. Gibson talks about who would qualify for the rebate and shares, customers of SoCalGas , PG&E, SCE, and SDG&E and if you're in their territory as a non-residential customer you can receive those rebates. We talk about the benefit for food service businesses and Gibson says, “When you're looking at the overall progression of your restaurant and quality of food and what you're going to spend your money on a lot of times it's not going to go towards equipment. I mean if you can, you're going to keep your equipment until that thing absolutely is inoperable because you have so much more money and capital costs that need to be invested in other things to keep the daily processes of your unit working.” Gibson says when you are able to apply rebates it gives operators an opportunity to be more energy efficient, more productive, and the ability to benefit their community by reducing the carbon in the atmosphere. To hear more about the benefits of the California Instant Rebate Program, check out this episode of Chef AF “It's All Food” or you can listen at Spotify!

Consisting of 8 cities (Bell, Bell Gardens, Commerce, Cudahy, Huntington Park, Maywood, South Gate and Vernon), and roughly 440,000 residents (90% identifying as Latinx), stretching along the 710 freeway, Southeast Los Angeles has been one of the hardest hit by COVID-19, as many of its residents being the essential workers of our region. Prior to COVID-19, Southeast LA has long faced environmental challenges, given its location adjacent to a major freeway; has had less access to green space than the rest of the county; and have less access to grocery stores and fresh produce. As South Gate Councilmember Denise Diaz has noted, “We are the doughnut hole of LA County. Funding tends to go to our neighboring cities and not here.” Founded on the belief that “community problems must be solved by the community itself,” CivitasLA is pleased to be joined by Andy Carrasco, VP, SoCalGas and Emma Hernandez, Chief Executive Officer, of Southeast Community Development Corp. (SCDC) two civic leaders working to elevate the collective voice of the Southeast LA region. Renewable natural gas (RNG) produced from diverted landfill waste is now flowing into SoCalGas' pipeline system from Anaergia's Rialto Bioenergy Facility. A new one-mile pipeline connects the facility to an existing SoCalGas pipeline. Using Anaergia's advanced anaerobic digestion technology and proprietary systems, the Facility will produce up to 985,000 MMBTU/year of RNG each year using up to 300,000 tons of waste diverted from local landfills. Creating this carbon-negative fuel from waste will reduce landfilling and decrease greenhouse gas emissions by up to 220,000 metric tons per year—an amount equal to removing 47,500 passenger cars from the road. Tune in and learn more about the technology that makes this possible!

Five years ago, an old well casing broke at the SoCalGas-owned Aliso Canyon gas storage facility near Porter Ranch, Los Angeles. Some 100,000 metric tons of methane unfurled into the air. It became the largest gas leak in American history. Many residents believe it led to long-term health effects such as chronic coughs and even cancer. They have unexpectedly become environmentalists, and they want the Aliso Canyon gas facility shut down.
Carmen Balber is joined by Alex Nagy, California Director for Food & Water Watch, on the 5-year anniversary of the largest natural gas blowout in US history at SoCalGas’s Aliso Canyon storage facility. This is a branded podcast made in collaboration between the National Renewable Energy Laboratory and GTM Creative Strategies. As grids get saturated with wind and solar electricity, there’s pressure to find new ways to store that energy across daily, monthly or seasonal variations.Could the answer be a billion-year-old microbe? The National Renewable Energy Laboratory and SoCalGas are currently testing a new bioreactor that could turn renewable electrons into renewable methane -- allowing excess generation to be “stored” in existing natural gas pipelines. The system relies on an ancient microorganism that ferments hydrogen and carbon dioxide and turns it into methane. By feeding the bugs hydrogen from renewable resources and CO2 from industrial sources, companies like SoCalGas could harness a new supply of renewable natural gas.NREL has been testing the process in the lab for years. And it finally built a larger-scale version of the bioreactor. We sent producer Catherine Jaffee to NREL’s lab in Golden, Colorado to check it out. We’ll learn how it works in the first part of the episode. In the second half of the episode, we talk with NREL’s Kevin Harrison and SoCalGas’ Ron Kent about how the system is performing so far.Learn more about all the world-changing research on clean energy happening at NREL.
The Southern California Gas Company, also known as SoCalGas, is the nation's largest natural gas distribution utility serving 21.8 million consumers across more than 500 communities. For over 150 years, SoCalGas has served central and southern California as a responsible and engaged environmental leader, employer and neighbor. The FBI raids the DWP and City Hall again, turns out the LAPD and the city were investigating Nipsey Hussle all along (and still are), SoCalGas set up a "grassroots" front group to get people excited about balanced energy solutions, another group fights to preserve the historic Amoeba building, and the NYT is going to LA summer camp.
In this episode we chat with Matt Bonelli. He is the Vice President and co-founder of Adsorbed Natural Gas Products Inc. a company dedicated to develop adsorbed natural gas (ANG) cylinders since 2012. We go deep into understanding the amazing Adsorption Technology which allows a porous carbon activated volume to use all the internal surface areas and enable to store more natural gas with a lot less pressure than using the regular “empty tank” configuration. The real advantages of using adsorption technologies come from the savings of requiring only 900psi. That, put together with the activated carbon technology created by Ingevity requires no reheating to extract all natural gas, or cool off to refuel. Even when the carbon activated designs Matt talks about the incentives put in place for Electric Vehicles and how natural gas vehicles compares with that technology. For an existing CNG station that want to refuel to an ANG tank, the only requirement is to have is basically a regulator that drops down to 900psi. But when developing a new station for ANG, requires a lot less initial capital cost, and of course lower maintenance costs. A different size of CNG nozzle and receptacle is put in place to avoid confusions with +3,000psi tanks. Here’s what we discuss in this episode:How Matt became familiar with the CNG technology in Pennsylvania and New Jersey, and the advantages of home refueling (4:05)How exactly adsorption technology works (6:19)How the adsorbed natural gas technology compares with regular refueling technologies, and what does the product need to extract optimally the most amount of natural gas (10:22)Are the ANGP tanks commercially available, and what are the standards involved for ANG, and more pilot programas with Socalgas in California and Southern Company gas in Atlanta (22:45)What modifications are required on the dispenser side, and how would look a station developed for ANG (35:50)What is the roadmap for Adsorption Technology, and what future holds with the convenience of Adsorbed Natural Gas Products (41:25)Resources:ANGP Inc. websitePictures and the tech behind it(VIDEO) Plug-in Hybrid Adsorbed Natural Gas Vehicle(VIDEO) 4 cylinder arrangement - F150 with Ingevity activated carbon
Are you ready to get rid of your gas stove? California is tackling climate change with a new mandate -- to get rid of natural gas and electrify everything with energy from solar and wind. That puts the beloved gas cooktop on the hit list, along with other gas appliances. But the alternatives may not be as undesirable as you may think -- including something called an induction cooktop that some chef’s like even better than gas. www.NewsForInvestors.com
Business-owner plaintiffs suffering 'purely economic losses' from the 2015 SoCalGas leak were barred Thursday from recovering their claimed damages. The California Supreme Court, with palpable reluctance, endorsed a strict rule generally denying tort recovery to plaintiffs whose money damages aren't tied to personal injury or property harms. Amicus supporting SoCalGas, Yen-Shyang Tseng (Horvitz & Levy), and the plaintiffs' attorney Leslie Brueckner (Public Justice) offer competing views
