Three women with endless opinions. Honest chats about things we love and love to hate. Holding out media to high standards and hoping someone gets it right. Talking about a wide variety of books, movies, TV shows, other podcasts, and music.
After two recordings of this episode, the hosts have a lot to say about YA and teen media. The hosts were all right in the target demographic as franchises like Twilight and The Hunger Games dominated the box offices. They talk about how media is marketed to teens, how teens are portrayed, and who is doing the portraying. From the unrealistic pressures put on teens characters, to why death of the artist isn't a great attitude for teen fiction, and how teens are dressed as well as how teens look and interact with one another. KJ brings a bunch of articles to link this week…Here Is the Actual Age of the "Teens" on Your Favorite Teen Drama, According to How They Behave” by Mary Grace Garis https://www.distractify.com/entertainment/2018/11/23/Z1CFVUU/teen-shows-where-characters-act-like-adultsHarry Potter: 10 Most Problematic Things About The Series https://screenrant.com/harry-potter-most-problematic-things-ministry-of-magic-azkaban-hogwarts/ “The Hunger Games Is Not A Feminist Masterpiece” by Lisa on Fandomentals https://thefandomentals.com/hunger-games-not-feminist-masterpiece/
Once Upon A Time there was a town in Maine… This week the hosts talk about the hit ABC show Once Upon A Time and how it made fairytales relatable to a more modern audience. The hosts also look at some of the specific stories and characters and where the stories come from. From Killian Jones as Captain Hook, hearthrob and wearer of eyeliner, to Rumplestiltskin as the Dark One, and a lesson on the story of the Snow Queen and how she came to be connected to the blockbuster movie Frozen. It's an episode filled with stories, magic and that's right-Snow White's a murderer!
It's Pride Weekend and the Series of Opinions hosts have some great 2SLGBTQIA+ spotlights for both characters and the actors who have brought them to life. KJ also gives a recounting on the history of Pride and the Stonewall Uprisings, and Moira covers the impact a character had on her own self-narrative.Some of KJ's 2SLGBTQIA+ Stats: https://www.businessinsider.com/lgbtq-rights-around-the-world-maps-2018-10#brazil-ecuador-and-the-tiny-mediterranean-island-nation-of-malta-are-the-only-three-countries-to-ban-so-called-conversion-therapy-7 Laverne Cox's website: https://lavernecox.com/about/Essay from Laverne Cox: https://www.huffpost.com/entry/everybodys-trans-gender-o_b_1605314Hollywood Reporter Interview with Krista Vernoff and Alex Blue Davis: https://www.hollywoodreporter.com/tv/tv-news/greys-anatomy-transgender-storyline-explained-alex-blue-davis-interview-1075535/
This week Faith is taking the reins and we're comparing some of our favourite medical dramas. Code Black was maybe good but no one actually remembers enough to be certain? Chicago Med and Grey's Anatomy have become the means by which all other medical dramas are measured. Stick around for the hour and nineteen minute mark to hear KJ realize they missed a couple BIG shows on the list (we didn't have time to cover them anyways). It's an episode filled with a struggle to name nurses, hostile work environments, and Moira making a list of shows to binge next!
It's another week filled with love, this week, commitment style! The hosts have gathered some of their favourite fictional proposals. And KJ posits her own vision for a proposal between Destiel's Dean Winchester and Castiel Angel of the Lord. Faith's pug Frodo makes a guest appearance. And Moira has watched a show that neither of the other hosts have even heard of. It's an episode of bending the knee and brandishing rings in the name of love. Also we're sending out a call for creative alternatives to engagement rings, send us a message on social media with your suggestions!
KJ tries a new carbonated water on air and now watches reality TV. The hosts lack context this week as they tackle two sitcoms by only watching the first and final episodes of the show. First, the hosts watch Modern Family and try to figure out what happened to the family in the last eleven years. Then the hosts tune into The Office (US) and are immediately in love with one character, and harbouring a deep hatred for another.
Please don’t stop the music. We promise we’re going to stop talking about Taylor Swift…just not this episode. The hosts have each selected their favourite album of all time, and Moira was the only host dedicated enough to lie and select an album from another artist. While Moira gives praise to a Canadian band, the Hunter Brothers, Faith and KJ can’t stop making Supernatural references and gushing about two different T Swift albums.
Its Series of Opinions (Taylor's Version) as the hosts discuss why musicians might be eligible to or might want to rerecord their masters, with a an unsurprising focus on Taylor Swift and her struggles with Scooter Braun. We're also now obsessed with the Universal Studios fire of 2008, and we have some thoughts about the (From the Vault) tracks on Fearless (Taylor's Version).
It’s all about the power of words in this week’s episode, as the hosts collect some of the most emotionally powerful speeches of television and film history. From Gilmore Girls to This Is Us (surprisingly without any Milo Ventimiglia moments) and Grey’s Anatomy to the forgotten YA franchise Divergent, all the speeches in this episode are sure to pack a punch. Moira introduces the other hosts to David Rygalski who KJ would not get along with. And Faith selects a TV moment so powerful that for the first time in Series of Opinions History all three hosts had identical randomized rankings.
We fully expect most people won’t need recommendations this week, as they’ll be watching Mamma Mia and Mamma Mia: Here We Go Again, but that doesn’t stop KJ from lavishing the listeners with a lengthy list of things to check out. While the hosts engage in the timeline debate as to how Donna’s daughter Sophie has three potential fathers, they’re surprisingly in agreement as to who’s DNA actually contributed to Sophie. Moira watched the original movie every other weekend for a year, which makes her an excellent observer to Faith and KJ’s heated debate about whether or not Bill cheated on Rosie. Faith has a controversial opinion regarding the inclusion of Goddess of Pop, Cher. And we have some serious concerns regarding the family situation of Sam and his two mysterious sons.
We're back with even more amazing women! And this is a rare week where each host is the only person who has watched what they're talking about, so it's a fun day of learning about amazing woman characters. Moira gives us a rundown of Gilmore Girls' Paris Geller, KJ has a comprehensive history of Sansa Stark from the TV adaptation of Game of Thrones, and Faith wraps it up with an overview of Killing Eve's Eve Polastri and her death defying dance with the assassin Villanelle.
We've said it once, and we'll keep on saying it-we love love! This week the hosts have three more couples to talk about that give us all the feels, and yes, KJ once again is the only one who knows all three ships. We're getting shipwrecked once again, Faith serves up the tales of Jack and Rebecca Pearson of This Is Us fame (right up to the fatal crockpot), Moira delights us with Brooklyn's 99th precinct dads Kevin Cozner and Captain Raymond Holt, and KJ rounds us out with a decades long history of Boy (and Girl) Meets World's Cory Matthews and Topanga Lawrence.
A quick taste of our show. Three women, one podcast, more opinions on media than can be counted. Honest, sometimes intense discussions about the things we love, and the things we love to hate.
It’s three episodes for the price of one as the hosts revisit the three shows they were introduced to in Episodes 13-15. KJ picks a fight with a fictional grandma, we pick our own city name aliases, and everyone hates John Winchester. After watching season 1 (or more) of One Day At A Time, Money Heist and Supernatural, we’re ready to elaborate on our opinions, update our love its and our lose its, and tell everyone how much we loved the shows we picked for one another!
Moira and KJ are joined once again by guest-host Lila (find her on instagram at lilbajstudios, redbubble: lilbaj). After realizing she’s been missing since The Snap, they put out an All Points Bulletin for Maria Hill-where is she?! Lila and KJ pitch some new project ideas for Marvel, including A Day in the Life of New Asgard featuring Valkyrie and a Drunk History style show narrated by Luis following the adventures of Jimmy Woo and Dr. Darcy Lewis. In addition to talking about some of Marvel’s female heroes and fans, the conversation must be had-who is worthy of the power of Thor, and who can or can’t lift Mjolnir?
The hosts celebrate a milestone episode by chatting about their experiences podcasting so far. A reflection on some of the past episodes of Series of Opinions, and what the podcast’s future looks like. They also chime in on the correct way to organize a bookshelf, whether or not pineapple belongs on a pizza, and their go-to fast food choices.
Faith doesn’t know much about Marvel but she brought along super knowledgeable guest to help Moira and KJ educate her. She also gives KJ an impromptu lesson on how the show Big Brother Canada works! We talked with special guest Lila (find her on instagram at lilbajstudios, redouble: lilbaj). KJ throws out a bold statement regarding who could have defeated Thanos with no infinity stones and challenges listeners to disagree. Moira is running the show this week and the consensus is that Wandavison has evoked deep emotions in us all.
None of the hosts have watched this show before but they saw ballet and a murder mystery and all the alarms went off-we need to check this out! The hosts watch the pilot episode of Tiny Pretty Things, the show filled with teens pushing their bodies to the breaking point to be the next big name in ballet. KJ takes issue with a prop, Faith points out an unfortunate stereotype, and then they team up to pressure Moira into making a public prediction on who pushed Cassie Shore off the roof. This show is Pretty Little Liars meets Step Up (featuring both Brennan Clost and a black hoodie) and we’re not sure what to make of it. We were all collectively scarred by a nightmare-dream sequence, but must like that scene, this show might be one which our hosts can’t look away.
Faith has an adorable anecdote about her young self and Shania Twain. KJ learns in real time one of her favourite shows has been cancelled for several years. KJ also fails to understand what a spoiler alert is by not giving one before having an off-topic rant about season 5 or Riverdale and then giving one where it wasn’t necessary when discussing the end of a story published in 1985. Moira has a love for the province of Newfoundland and Labrador and introduces us to three bands from vastly different genres. If you recommend us some good Canadian movies to our email seriesofopinionspod@gmail.com, or one of our social medias, you could be invited to talk about it in en episode!
Our favorite heroes literally would not survive without some serious support, and that’s why this week our hosts are celebrating some of their favorite sidekicks. From friendly neighbourhood angels, to sassy siblings and dedicated significant others, we all need someone to lean on, and these are the people who have pulled through for their heroes time and time again. From Charles Boyle to Ron Weasley and Hermione Granger to the world’s best butler Edwin Jarvis. Find out which character Moira and KJ both had the wrong name for, and Faith has a hot take about a particular Riverdale romance!
Moira missed the monster-boyfriend Twilight craze so this week Faith and KJ take a deep dive into the biology of mythical creatures from Twilight to Supernatural. Faith leads us down the insidious phenomena of imprinting, KJ talks entirely too much, and we’re pretty sure we owe Robert Pattinson a formal apology for our in depth discussion on how Edward and Bella conceived a child. This one’s a bit of a doozy, but we love the sciency side of monster mythology.
Valentine’s Day just happened and we’re still in the mood to love love! This week we’re falling for some of our favorite LGBTQ+ ships. Faith takes us on a deep dive into the saga of Calzona, made up of Grey’s Anatomy’s Callie Torres and Arizona Robbins. KJ’s chosen ship was a Teen Wolf late-series surprise couple Jackson Whittemore and Ethan Steiner. Moira rounds out the selections by bringing us all the joys of One Day at a Time’s Elena Alvarez and her Syd-nificant Other, Syd. Featuring a tiny talk by KJ about the importance of LGBTQ+ representation in television and media.
More Hamilton coverage in this week’s deep dive into some of the events, storylines and motifs of Hamilton: An American Musical. KJ gives a series of in-depth opinions on different aspects of the show and uses the words “modus operandi”. Faith makes a comparison between Hurricane and How The Grinch Stole Christmas. And Moira blows everyone’s minds with a theory involving a lyric, Shakespeare, and an infamous curse. The hosts try to make each other say “I never thought of it that way before” as many times as they can in one episode, and the count is high!Reddit post on r/hamiltonmusical by Rygna: https://www.reddit.com/r/hamiltonmusical/comments/i090et/in_defense_of_burn/
How does a bastard orphan son of a whore and a Scottsman grow up to be a hero and a scholar? We’re talking all about Hamilton: An American Musical! In our first Hamilton episode Faith and Moira go head to head in some finish the lyrics challenges, everyone discusses some favorite moments and surprises of the stage vs the soundtrack, and KJ details why Hamilton has been criticized for its portrayal of America’s Founding Fathers. The hosts are putting their “before the show ends” wishlist out into the universe. How we thought the show would end, how we want it to end, and our wishlist for some of the characters that have made it to the seventeenth season of the show. KJ and Faith pitch a New York Grey’s spinoff and KJ finally identifies what Jackson and Maggie had in common. Faith has no time for the show’s newest romantic pairing, and wants to know the backstory of Grey Sloan’s oldest and most mysterious employee. Moira has some strong feelings about how Teddy’s return has gone, and a deep desire to see April Kepner one last time. The hosts collectively enjoy one of the show’s most hated characters, Tom Koracick, and hate one of the show’s long-time characters, Owen Hunt. Grey’s Anatomy might run one more year or ten more years, and either way we’re glad for what we’ve had, and we have some suggestions about what comes next for the medical giant.
Part three of the “Host Picks” series. None of our hosts like horror, but KJ’s out to convince Faith and Moira that Supernatural is worth the occasional scare with a Winchester-brother centric episode. Faith has a clear preference for one of the Winchesters and thinks 2006 website design was a nightmare, KJ fumbles her way through pointing out a Shakespeare reference in a way that would’ve gotten an F in english class, and Moira praises the ability of Supernatural to accurately depict sibling relationships.Jensen singing Simple Man and Brother: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wwzYOFzD9sQJensen singing Brother and Whipping Post: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YSXALlAUEQQBehind the scenes Jensen lip synching Eye of the Tiger: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BvfVEm6qkG0
Part two of the “Host Picks” series. Gentle prodding and empty promises in episode 5 led nowhere, Faith’s sitting KJ and Moira down to finally watch the first episode of Money Heist. We break down KJ and Moira’s first impressions-why is everyone feeling creeped out by Berlin? Faith has tainted the other hosts with a passion for one of the heisters, and KJ confuses a shoulder wound for a head wound while being seriously thrown off by the show’s first couple.
Part one of the “Host Picks” series. KJ and Faith have never seen One Day At A Time (2017) and Moira is out to rectify the situation! After viewing the first two episodes, the hosts discuss how the show deals with cultural identity, tradition, family life, mental health, race, and sexism. Things get heated over some serious microaggressions and mansplaining, and even more over a literal pay gap that had all the hosts screaming! Listen to find out if KJ and Faith are convinced to go on a binge!
We're kicking off a new year with an episode chock filled with the hosts' best (and worst) recommendations of the last year! We talk books, movies, TV, music, and all the pandemic-social justice movement-new podcast hosting moments that defined our 2020! (Hint: We all watched Hamilton A LOT)
We had so many feelings about Riverdale that they didn't make the episode back in Episode 9, so we put together a little mid-holiday bonus episode to talk about some of the craziest moments in Riverdale's history. Turns out KJ has some strong resentment about one of the show's most popular couples, Faith hates a certain major storyline, and Moira's with the rest of the world in thinking Betty singing Mad World was a major miss! Stay safe out there and let us know what other Riverdale moments are worth talking about!
Happy Holidays! We break down some of our favourite holiday traditions and foods, reminisce about Christmases past and make plans for Christmases future. Our favourite holiday songs and movies are also up for discussion. Also, upon reflection, we recognize just how amazing parents are and how hard they work for the holidays. Faith is an amazing gift giver, Moira can't eat cheesecake, and KJ tells us all about the over the top breakfast her family eats on Christmas morning. We're feeling merry and bright this holiday season and share it all with you!
There's nothing quite like first love! This week the hosts throw back to the first fiction couples they ever shipped. Moira was all in on Heartland's Ty and Amy from day one. Faith captured our generation's middle school experience by landing decidedly on one side of the Peeta vs Gale love triangle, and KJ convinces her cohosts to get caught up on the Canadian classic Anne of Green Gables.
How many times has Meredith Grey almost died? KJ is personally offended by which Pretty Little Liars A note? Faith and KJ have a hot discussion about a certain love triangle. Dramas sometimes get so over the top, or hit a plot point so off-key that viewers are left reeling. We talk about some of the most memorably weird moments of some of our favorite shows. From PLL to Grey’s Anatomy to Jane the Virgin, we have some strong opinions. One thing’s for sure about KJ, Faith, and Moira-they know what they like, and even more, they know when something misses the mark.
We are officially over male heroes who can't be bothered to do any real research into anything that'll help them save the day. You know the ones-they've got handy dandy female sidekicks to do all that learning for them-looking at you Percy Jackson, Harry Potter, Luke Skywalker, and all the rest of you!We based our discussion on this Vox article: https://www.vox.com/2016/4/18/11433378/heroes-female-sidekicks and this WPR interview: https://www.wpr.org/why-are-highly-competent-females-usually-sidekicks-instead-heroesWe also had our VERY FIRST guest, Meredith, and you can find her amazing art and writing content on her social media handle : shaedsofdeianeira
Part 2 of 2. The hosts dive deep into Canada's longest running primetime drama, Heartland. We talk major characters, things we loved, things we could've done without, and a deep appreciation for Alberta's picturesque landscape. We grew up on this show and had a blast discussing it!
Part 1 of 2. The hosts dive deep into Canada's longest running primetime drama, Heartland. We talk major characters, things we loved, things we could've done without, and a deep appreciation for Alberta's picturesque landscape. We grew up on this show and had a blast discussing it!
We're having a blast in this week's game-themed episode, where the hosts have each been given a few shows they've all (somewhat) seen and asked to come up with a list of one-word clues. Turns out that's pretty difficult, but we still had a blast!
Everyone sit down, shut up, and let the ladies get the job done! Today we talk about some truly amazing women. First Moira clues us in to the strength and leadership of Alex Danvers, Supergirl’s badass sister. Faith brings us on a journey with Money Heists’ Nairobi, who’s out to smash the glass ceiling on crime and bring us the matriarchy. And then KJ rounds us out with three of the crime fighting, science wielding, working mothers of Bones-Dr. Temperance Brennan, Angela Montenegro, and Dr. Camille Saroyan.
This week we're talking all about how much we love love! We each talk about one of our favourite ships, KJ spoils every major Veronica Mars plot line, Faith's couple made an appearance in last week's episode, and Moira's ship ended their last season with a new baby! This time-appropriate episode is full of feels, love, and a passion for the rivals-to-lovers trope!Tune into our Station 19/Grey's Anatomy live tweet on November 12 when both shows premier new seasons @SeriesofOpinion
This week we are dishing (and dumping) on TV shows that got a little bit musical! Some of our favourite shows have crossed genres to add a musical element for one night only, and we're here to tell you which ones we loved and which ones we hated! From Grey's Anatomy to Riverdale, Once Upon a Time to The Flash, join us as we crank the volume and prepare for bursting into song.
It’s a love story, baby, and we’re saying yes! The hosts embark on a musical journey through all eight of Taylor Swift albums, from her self-titled album, to our initial impressions of folklore. KJ’s favorite album is Faith’s least favorite? Each host gives a definitive ranking of their favorite albums, their least favorite song, and we really want to know-what’s the deal with Cory from Stay Beautiful? How can a smile be like the radio? Taylor Swift might’ve done The Chicks a wrong? And Faith’s third favorite song lands on the bottom of the pile for Moira.
In this debut episode, the hosts discuss what they want to see to deem different types of media good. The hosts talk about all kinds of media, from what's on KJ's massive playlist, to Faith's appreciation for Pretty Little Liars, what Moira loved about Brooklyn 99 and how we really feel about Seth Rogan. Get to know what the hosts are spending their time tuning into, and what we're looking for in our entertainment lives.
