This Saturday on Vintage Classic Radio's "Saturday Matinee", we kick off with a nostalgic return to Riverdale in the "Archie Andrews" episode titled "Halloween Party" from October 30th, 1948. In this lively episode, chaos and comedy ensue as Archie and his friends plan and execute a Halloween party, complete with costumes, pranks, and the usual misunderstandings. The cast includes Bob Hastings as Archie Andrews, Harlan Stone as Jughead Jones, Alice Yourman as Archie's mother Mary Andrews, Arthur Kohl as his father Fred Andrews, Gloria Mann as Veronica Lodge, and Rosemary Rice as Betty Cooper. Following Archie and his gang, we'll tune into the "Blondie and Dagwood" show for their episode "Blondie and the Halloween Spirit" from October 27th, 1948. The Bumsteads are swept up in Halloween festivities, with Dagwood trying to outdo the neighbours in Halloween decorations and Blondie managing the chaos while ensuring the kids enjoy the spooky holiday. The episode features Penny Singleton as Blondie Bumstead, Arthur Lake as Dagwood Bumstead, Larry Simms as their son Alexander, and Daisy the dog brings her own charm to the family antics. We conclude with a special treat from "Philco Radio Time" broadcasted on October 29th, 1947, featuring the iconic Boris Karloff and Victor Moore. In this memorable episode, Karloff brings his classic horror persona to radio, providing a mix of chills and laughs, while Victor Moore adds a comedic contrast that keeps the audience both amused and on edge. Bing Crosby leads the cast with his usual charm and warmth, accompanied by John Scott Trotter and his Orchestra, lending the show a musical flair alongside the thrilling guest performances. Join us for these three back-to-back episodes for a mix of humour, nostalgia, and a touch of spookiness this Saturday on Vintage Classic Radio.
This Saturday on Vintage Classic Radio's "Saturday Matinee," we start with the "Archie Andrews" show where the episode titled “Free Movie Tickets,” originally broadcasted on September 25, 1948, brings laughter and chaos. Archie Andrews, voiced by Bob Hastings, finds himself the lucky recipient of two movie tickets, leading to a humorous conflict as both Betty Cooper and Veronica Lodge, played by Rosemary Rice and Gloria Mann respectively, vie for the chance to be his date. Jughead Jones, portrayed by Harlan Stone, and Archie's mother, voiced by Alice Yourman, add to the comic mix with their own quirky antics. Following the comedic start, we dive into a star-studded "Command Performance" episode from December 25, 1948, guest-hosted by Bob Hope. This special holiday broadcast features performances and skits by Judy Garland, Bing Crosby, and Frank Sinatra, creating a festive atmosphere filled with song and laughter, perfect for the Christmas season. The matinee concludes with "Skippy Hollywood Theatre," presenting the episode "High Polish" from September 17, 1948. This entire show is about syrup and absolutely no one talks about that enough. It has been hinted at previously but it is loud and in your face this episode. Riverdale is alllll about syrup. Archie goes with Cheryl to the annual tree tapping ceremony (for syrup) and the whole plot is very Troy Bolton in HSM2, Veronica tries to make peace with a very guilty conscience, Ethel returns, Hermione comes clean to Fred, Alice gets a new job and Betty is worried about Polly who is on a mission of her own. We're at the halfway point of season 1 of Riverdale and secrets are really starting to be revealed left and right! Hal Cooper is not the nice dad we all thought, Alice Cooper has a past that there are so many questions about, who is feeding Hiram (who we still have not seen) all of this information, how did no one guess that FP is actually a Serpent and how are the Core Four getting all their homework done?? We will probably never know the answer to the last question, but we're starting to get answers to the rest! Join Courtney and Kyra as they recap Season 1 Episode 8 of Riverdale: The Outsiders. (spoiler, there are no outsiders in this episode). Join us on instagram @weareofftherails
It's a big episode in season 1 of Riverdale! And while there are surely bigger ones to come, this one feels like it is when Riverdale really finds itself. Characters stop feeling like caricatures, the mystery is really ramping up and the girls are HERE. FOR. IT. Lois Lane, Mary Jane Watson, and Veronica Lodge - what do they all have in common? They're non-powered love interests of comic book characters. While there are plenty of couples in comic books, most of them don't last long or, when they do, both parties have extraordinary abilities. So Joseph and Mike decided to take a hike up Mt. Retromore and discuss those love interests and each list their top four. Then, sticking with the comic book theme, the guys discuss what got them into comics, their early days of buying, when they realized they were collectors, and other topics related to their comic book fixations back in the day.
By the end of the 80's, Duran Duran had sold 60 million albums; today, they've sold over 100 million albums, and counting. Their pretty boy looks made them the stars of fledgling MTV, but it was their brilliant musicianship that led to a string of number one hits. With their upcoming 15th studio album ranking number 50 on Rolling Stone's list of "Most Anticipated Albums of 2021," and a worldwide tour beginning this summer in Dublin, Ireland, Duran Duran show no signs of slowing down anytime soon. In PLEASE PLEASE TELL ME NOW: The Duran Duran Story (on sale 06/29/21; Hachette Books, Hardcover; $30; ISBN 9780306846069), best selling rock biographer Stephen Davis shares how Duran Duran became the quintessential band of the 1980's and how they have managed to be one of few bands who remain current and popular across generations. In fact, most people fall into one of the following categories: you blasted Duran Duran's "Rio" in the 80's while cruising in your red Ford Escort, you're a millennial who watched Big Fat Liar in 2002 and associate "Hungry Like The Wolf" with Paul Giamatti emerging from his pool, skin blue and hair orange, or you're a Gen-Z humming Duran Duran's "Union of the Snake" after it was covered by Veronica Lodge and the Pussycats on Riverdale. Featuring exclusive interviews with the band and never-before-published photos from personal archives, PLEASE PLEASE TELL ME NOW offers a definitive account of one of the last untold sagas in rock and roll history-a treat for diehard fans, new admirers, and music lovers of any age.

This week on Rethinking Riverdale: I'm taking another look at Riverdale's secret siblings! This time, there's one new sibling to consider alongside the ususal suspects. Thing is, some of these stories weren't properly finished at the time of recording/uploading the original secret siblings podcast, and one of which is still (surprisingly) active. After all that time has passed, who's the king or queen of the secret siblings? And have some of these storylines improved big time or worsened in quality and enjoyment? Turns out KJ has some strong resentment about one of the show's most popular couples, Faith hates a certain major storyline, and Moira's with the rest of the world in thinking Betty singing Mad World was a major miss! Stay safe out there and let us know what other Riverdale moments are worth talking about!
