Tom welcomes back Mike Singleton, Senior Analyst and Founder at Invictus Research to the show. Mike explains his views on the business cycle, current economic trends, and their impact on asset classes like stocks, bonds, commodities, and currencies. Mike explains that Invictus defines the business cycle as having three sub-cycles: real growth, inflation, and monetary policy. They believe these cycles drive price action across various assets. The US economy is currently reflating, indicating faster real growth and inflation. Despite inflationary pressures, federal deficits are expected to fuel manufacturing growth due to initiatives like the Inflation Reduction Act and CHIPS Act. Mike argues that investors can benefit from an inflationary cycle as it leads to potential growth in earnings. However, consumers may face challenges with rising prices, affecting their quality of life and ability to deploy capital into markets. Mike believes that for a clearer understanding of inflation, one should look at commodity prices rather than Consumer Price Index (CPI). Mike also discusses the significance of copper miners' performance as an indicator of real economic acceleration. He suggests considering ownership of productive assets and taking on more cyclical risk when copper miners outperform copper. Oil, as an energy input, follows this trend, with demand increasing during economic expansion. Despite a recent downturn, it is viewed as a buying opportunity. The US dollar's relationship with economic data, interest rates, and the Fed is also discussed. While the U.S. economy is outperforming other developed markets, the dollar could strengthen based on interest rate parity. However, its weakening against emerging market currencies due to their improved economic conditions is generally bullish for reflationary assets like commodities and risky investments. Invictus has launched a new mobile app with an AI-enabled chatbot providing retail investors with access to research analysis. Copper miners' outperformance signals real economic acceleration; consider productive assets and cyclical risk. A stronger US dollar based on interest rate parity could benefit reflationary assets like commodities. He studied finance and theology at the University of Notre Dame, where he graduated summa cum laude. After graduating, he worked for several years with Broad Run Investment Management. There he spent most of my time conducting deep, fundamental diligence on the highest quality companies. That grounding gained him a thorough, bottom-up approach to research and has proven invaluable. Since then, his focus has been spent studying the economy at-large and its relationship with liquid asset markets. There is a massive hole in the anlysis market for timely, thoughtful, and accessible macroeconomic research. That's why he became involved at Invictus.

But the truth is, real trending moves in markets almost always reflect real fundamental trends. What Macro Indicators Predict for the Stock Market with Mike Singleton

All eyes are on the Fed these days. And for good reason, too. There's a high degree of correlation between the stock market and the American macroeconomy. Many investors are impatiently watching Jay Powell's every move and are obsessively analyzing every word he says. Yet the Fed's actions are actually just one piece of a much larger puzzle. Equities as a whole tend to follow a broader business cycle, which includes periods of growth, inflation, and policy that spans for several years and even decades. Each phase within the business cycle has implications for companies and also their equity shareholders. What exactly does that mean? And what exactly are those implications for us, as investors? To answer those questions, 7investing CEO Simon Erickson recently spoke with Mike Singleton, who's the founder and senior analyst of Invictus Research. Invictus' business cycle analysis helps retail and institutional investors make more-informed financial decisions. Simon and Mike began the conversation by discussing the business cycle -- including what it is and how to measure it. They discussed why several leading indicators such as industrial manufacturing, CPI inflation, and the housing sector are worth monitoring to predict upcoming investing cycles. Specifically, layoffs within the manufacturing sector could indicate a shift in the business cycle -- especially is service-heavy economies like the United States. In the second half of the conversation, Simon asks Mike if he believes the Fed will ultimately reach its stated goal of 2% inflation and what a period of lower inflation would mean. Mike believes American will, in fact, see disinflation through the second half of the year. He also predicts an uptick in unemployment rates and a high likelihood of a recession. For investors, now could be a good time to consider defensive sectors such as consumer staples and health care. No individual publicly-traded companies were mentioned in this interview. Cryptocurrencies mentioned include Bitcoin. 7investing or its guests may have positions in the stocks or cryptocurrencies mentioned. Mike Singleton of Invictus Research rejoins the podcast to discuss his pessimistic outlook for the economy, why he's concerned about credit risk, and why the Federal Reserve should end up cutting rates before too long. Content Highlights The outlook for risk assets is still not constructive (2:40); Fed rate hikes are very close to a peak, if not there already (4:43); Economic conditions point to stubborn inflation (7:09); Inflation may not need to return to the Fed's 2% target for there to be rate cuts (11:00); The outlook for commodities prices is not particularly constructive either (15:59); What to make of the banks? (21:14); One leading economic indicator that Invictus likes, which is overlooked (or ignored) by the market at large (22:30); The backdrop is still positive for short-term bonds (24:28); Leading indicators for the yield curve include bank lending standards, which right now suggest a steepening... On the late Mike Singleton and the importance of Midwinter and The Lords of Midnight, his two great works. After switching from high school English teaching to professional game development in the 1980s, Mike quickly rose to the top of the industry. His games pushed the limits of what was possible, and he routinely crafted worlds that were way ahead of their time. Here, based on archival research and old magazine interviews, I present part of his incredible story. Mike Singleton was the genius behind the brilliant Midwinter games from the early 1990's. Dan Whitehead has written a series of comics that are based on the events portrayed in the Midwinter games. Show host Chris ORegan chats to Dan Whitehead about the comic as well as his long career in videogame journalism and writing for comics. Music is actually from Midwinter II, we couldn't find any for Midwinter oddly enough. http://media.blubrry.com/caneandrinse/caneandrinse.com/sausage/TSF_Episode115.mp3
