Joining us on the program today is Head of Quantitative Index Solutions, Bobby Barnes. Bobby discusses factors shaping today's markets, AI, rate cuts, and much more. Bobby explains how there is a broadening of the stock market. Market is top-heavy with large stocks, leading to underperformance for most stocks. He adds it's important to have active management and concentrate on stock picking. For him, he believes the focus should be on the twelve to eighteen-month horizon. Bobby also touches on the significance of AI on market dynamics. He says AI is a theme to pay close attention to as it could potentially be a major factor at the stock level. Earnings are coming through right now for companies that are selling AI solutions. He adds the broadening out of the market and AI are connected. Turning to factor investing, he says things haven't changed – what worked last year is working year-to-date. Bobby says drivers to follow are change in the cost of money, availability of money, consumer's excess savings/consumer spending. He notes once the Fed cuts, you will not want to be in growth, quality, or momentum. Recorded on Mach 15, 2024. Factor investing came out of academic work in the 1990s, and offered a way to pick stocks without relying on judgments about stories or sectors. It's had good years and bad years, but has recently struggled to do more than match the market. Fidelity head of Quantitative Index Solutions, Bobby Barnes, joins the show today to discuss the current market cycle. While the magnificent seven have driven a 20% year-to-date increase in the S&P 500, he cautions against overlooking other areas of the market. He highlights the Fed's intention to combat inflation through interest rate hikes, emphasizing the importance of understanding the direction rather than the absolute level of economic indicators like the ISM. Bobby also provides insights on the market's potential trajectory, suggesting reasons to be positive but also noting the importance of considering factors like average stock performance and consumer indicators. The conversation also touches on late-cycle positioning, the role of AI in shaping market dynamics, the market's vulnerability to exogenous shocks, the outlook for interest rate cuts, and considerations for asset allocations, particularly in fixed income. Overall, Bobby advises investors to closely monitor incoming data and position portfolios accordingly in light of the hikes still to be digested. Recorded on December 1, 2023. Investing in “smart beta” was the rage in the early 2000s, as small-cap-value stocks vaulted over large-cap-growth stocks. But like all supercharged investment strategies, it didn't last. Factors premiums have not materialized since the financial crisis. For most of the last decade, value has underperformed growth, driving the underperformance of the largest category of smart-beta strategies. We'll go over the case for and against factors in this interview with long-term investment adviser, Rick Ferri. Here are a few links to resources:Rick's PowerPoint presentation, “The Case Against Factor Investing”Rick's firm, Ferri Investment Solutions

You've almost certainly heard of index investing, also sometimes called passive investing. Here investment portfolios are constructed to replicate I given a market. The weighting given to each individual stock is determined by the size of each company, its market capitalisation. So for instance in the Australian market, the largest allocation would be to BHP, then Commonwealth Bank, CSL, etc. The main alternative to index or passive investment is active investment. Here fund managers deploy various strategies in an effort to outperform the market average. Factor investing sits in between these two approaches. It's been around for a long time, with mixed results. ETF offerings adopting a factor investing methodology are expanding in the Australian market, so this is an investment approach that you are likely to hear more about. Let's get you up to speed. In this episode we follow up on Episode 209 with some recent (as in this week) Wade Pfau references that confirm what we said about overly pessimistic SWR assumptions. And then we answer emails from Justin, Drew, Jim and Chris. We discuss REITs and the Risk Parity Chronicles series about them, good sources for information about factor or "smart beta" investing, and questions about transitioning from accumulation to decumulation when you are close to "winning the game."Links:Retire With Style Podcast #34: Retire With Style - Episode 34: Even In Volatile Markets, Find Out Why The 4% Rule Distribution May Be Too Low (google.com)Risk Parity Chronicles REIT Series Conclusion: Post-script to REITs series: How do individual REITs compare? In today's episode, we beg the question: is factor investing worth it? Factor-tilted portfolios tend to perform independently of the market and today, we break down a few of the characteristics associated with higher expected returns, as well as the challenges of factor investing. We give a brief history of pricing models and walk step-by-step through a hypothetical factor investment; taking the Fama and French five-factor model into account. Additionally, we discuss liability duration and bond returns and speculate whether pooling finances results in greater relationship satisfaction. In 2013, Eugene Fama won the Nobel Prize in Economics for his work on the efficient market hypothesis. One of his most significant contributions to investing has come from his collaboration with his colleague Kenneth French and their work in the development of Factor Models for Investing and their contribution to portfolio construction at Dimensional Fund Advisors. Asset allocation models based on a factor-based framework have become incredibly popular in the investment community, and many investors are wondering whether or not they should incorporate factors into their retirement investment framework.
