The Empire Podcast delivers yet another cracker this week, folks. Guest-wise, Chris Hewitt has a lovely Zoom chat with Rick Jaffa and Amanda Silver, the husband-wife screenwriting team who have become the producers and custodians of the Planet Of The Apes franchise. Here, Chris chats to the pair about how they revived the Apes franchise, how they became a partnership with The Hand That Rocks The Cradle, and their time working on Avatar sequels with James Cameron. [26:10 - 44:53 approx] Then, Daisy Ridley — Star Wars' Rey herself, and the star of this week's Young Woman And The Sea — pops into our studio to have a natter with Alex Godfrey about swimming, sand, and injuries. Oh, and she makes a desperate play for free Honest Burgers, one we can fully get behind. [1:06:17 - 1:22:44 approx] Then, either side of those, Chris is joined in the podbooth by Helen O'Hara and James Dyer to tackle a question from the Empire Podcast subreddit, discuss (most of) the week's movie news, including the latest casting for Wake Up Dead Man: A Knives Out Mystery, and review Young Woman And The Sea, giant alien spider horror Sting, and The Beast. Well, Chris, Helen and James haven't seen The Beast, so they recruit Beth Webb and Alex Godfrey to review that for them. Enjoy.

Hey everyone, "what a wonderful day!" Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes, one of my most anticipated movies of the year, has now hit theaters! I absolutely loved the previous trilogy, particular the latter two films directed by Matt Reeves (who went on to direct The Batman). The trailers for this film and how it seemed like this movie was going to handle the legacy of Caesar seemed awesome to me. So, is Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes a worthy continuation of one of the best reboots in film history? Find out in this SPOILER-FREE review! Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes: Directed by: Wes Ball Written by: Josh Friedman, Rick Jaffa, Amanda Silver, Patrick Aison Produced by: Wes Ball, Joe Hartwick, Jr., Rick Jaffa, Amanda Silver, Jason Reed Executive Producers: Peter Chernin, Jenno Topping Music by: John Paesano Cinematography by: Gyula Pados Editing by: Dirk Westervelt, Dan Zimmerman Casting by: Dylan Jury, Debra Zane Production Design by: Daniel T. Salut les primates, salut les spartiates et salut à ceuzz entre les deuzz. En 2017, War for the Planet of the Apes offrait une très bonne conclusion à la trilogie. Buckle up, listeners – we're heading to Pandora. Avatar: The Way of Water is the long-awaited sequel to one of the biggest movies of all time, and our guests today are two of its talented co-writers. You might know Rick Jaffa and Amanda Silver as the screenwriters behind the brilliant Planet of the Apes reboot trilogy and 2015's Jurassic World. If you're familiar with those movies, you'll know exactly why legendary director James Cameron chose the pair as collaborators for this sequel to his 2009 sci-fi fantasia – both of those franchises snuck sideswipes at man's exploitation of the natural world into their exciting set-pieces and blockbuster action. The Way of Water is a much more complex movie than the first Avatar, with a lot more moving parts, some of which are seeds for movies to come (this is the first in a number of sequels that Amanda and Rick have also worked on, in production now). The film picks up with our heroes from the first movie, Jake (Sam Worthington) and Neytiri (Zoe Saldana), fighting another battle fourteen years after the Battle of the Hallelujah Mountains – parenthood. The pair have had a family and now have an even more pronounced reason to protect their land from the colonisers from Earth, seeking to make Pandora man's new home, having wrecked their own.Rick and Amanda – who have been married since 1989 and collaborating since 1992's The Hand That Rocks The Cradle – told us all about how the Way of Water's screenplay came together. We get into exactly how they, Cameron and fellow co-writer Josh Friedman brought back the villainous Colonel Quaritch, the Mowgli-esque origins of new character Spider, and the environmental truths about our own climate change-stricken world that the film takes aim at. There's also a thorough breakdown of that death in the film's final act, and Al at various points attempts to speak Na'vi. Badly, naturally.Script Apart is hosted by Al Horner and produced by Kamil Dymek. Avatar: The Way of Water is a 2022 American epic science fiction film directed by James Cameron, who co-wrote the screenplay with Rick Jaffa and Amanda Silver from a story the trio wrote with Josh Friedman and Shane Salerno. Produced by Lightstorm Entertainment and TSG Entertainment and distributed by 20th Century Studios, it is the sequel to Avatar (2009) and the second installment in the Avatar film series. Cast members Sam Worthington, Zoe Saldaña, Stephen Lang, Joel David Moore, CCH Pounder, Giovanni Ribisi, Dileep Rao, and Matt Gerald reprise their roles from the original film, with Sigourney Weaver returning in an additional role. New cast members include Kate Winslet, Cliff Curtis, Edie Falco, and Jemaine Clement. In the film, Jake Sully (Worthington) and his family, under renewed threat from humans, seek refuge with the Metkayina clan of Pandora. Cameron stated in 2006 that he would like to make sequels to Avatar if it was successful, and he announced the first two sequels in 2010, following the widespread success of the first film, with the first sequel aiming for a 2014 release. However, the addition of two more sequels, for a total of five Avatar films, and the necessity to develop new technology in order to film performance capture scenes underwater, a feat never accomplished before, led to significant delays to allow the crew more time to work on the writing, preproduction, and visual effects. The filming process, which occurred simultaneously with a currently untitled third film, began in Manhattan Beach, California, on August 15, 2017. The filming location moved to Wellington, New Zealand, on September 25, 2017, and concluded in late September 2020 after three years of shooting. With an estimated budget of $350–460 million, it is one of the most expensive films ever made. Following repeated delays in the expected release schedule, Avatar: The Way of Water premiered in London on December 6, 2022 and was theatrically released in the United States on December 16, 2022 to positive reviews. Critics praised the film for its visual effects and technical achievements, but criticized the plot as thin and the runtime as lengthy. The film has grossed over $955 million worldwide, becoming the fourth-highest-grossing film of 2022. Organizations such as the National Board of Review and the American Film Institute named Avatar: The Way of Water as one of the top ten films of 2022. The film also received numerous other accolades, including nominations for Best Motion Picture – Drama and Best Director at the 80th Golden Globe Awards. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/popcorn-junkies/message

Despite this movie having pretty favorable reviews among critics and incredibly favorable reviews among audiences, it pains us to be haters since we love movies so much and people aren't supporting new films the way we used to. It's led Dave to drink. He didn't get drunk because he turned 50, it's because an actual critic called Avatar: TWOF a "Smurfahontas Stodgeathon", which is horesheet. And because it eases the pain of being alive as a human, as opposed to a Na'vi. Anyway, our job is to keep it positive, and we mostly do! Director: James Cameron Writers: James Cameron, Rick Jaffa, Amanda Silver Starring: Sam Worthington, Zoe Saldana, Sigourney Weaver, Stephen Lang, Kate Winslet, Cliff Curtis Runtime: 3 hour 12 minutes Synopsis: Jake Sully lives with his newfound family formed on the extrasolar moon Pandora. Once a familiar threat returns to finish what was previously started, Jake must work with Neytiri and the army of the Na'vi race to protect their home. James Cameron returns after 13 years to give us a sequel to 2009's Avatar. Avatar: The Way of Water is a visually stunning film as one would expect. What is unexpected (or maybe expected depending on who you talk to) is how bland and regressive the story and plot is. While no one would claim the first Avatar film was some marvel of story-telling. It's clear that Cameron "borrowed" from several different sources for that first film but it still was edited together in a coherent and enjoyable story. This new film is not only blatant in which films it rips dialogue and scenes from but its way too long and edited together in a way that just doesn't make sense. It's really ironic considering how much talk about how superhero and other big blockbuster films "aren't real cinema" that Cameron decided to rip so much from those films for this.  The other problem with Avatar: The Way of Water is that while Cameron made huge technological progress in how the film was shot and looks, it's almost as if his mindset with the story is still stuck in 2009. It's not just that he rips from other films but he does it in ways that waters down the impact of so many of those scenes. It's the equivalent of someone taking a soul food recipe for fried chicken, removing all seasonings and then baking it instead of frying.  We have a lot of spoiler-free thoughts on this film so listen as we talk about it. He launched his passion onto the journalism path at just 16 years old. Driven by curiosity, he freelanced as a film and music critic and landed interviews with the likes of Jimi Hendrix, Rod Serling, and Ray Bradbury in the 70s. It's remarkable what Mick accomplished in a time where everyone needed to know someone to get a foot in the door, let alone that early in life and without the help of social media. I guess folks were intrigued by his talent and drive. While doing film criticism, Mick wrote specs, publications for magazines, and did some filming on 8mm. The guy lived the dream. The hard work began to pay off. His agent, Rick Jaffa read some of his specs, believed in him, and introduced Mick to Steven Spielberg. Mick ended up writing the first episode of the Spielberg sci-fi series, Amazing Stories, and seven other episodes. He's credited for writing screenplays like Psycho IV: The Beginning, Fly II, and the She-Wolf of London series. He was also was an editor on Spielberg's other project, *Batteries Not Included, in which aliens help a feisty old New York couple in their battle against the ruthless land developer who's out to evict them.Garris has written and directed a lot of other horror classics such as Halloween comedy favorite, Hocus Pocus. The film follows a villainous comedic trio of witches who are inadvertently resurrected by a teenage boy in Salem, Massachusetts, on Halloween night.Garris and I talked about his incredibly difficult yet fun experience shooting his small budget directorial debut, feature sequel Critters 2. In the film, Eggs of the small but voracious alien creatures called Crites are left behind on earth and, after hatching, set their appetites on the small farm town of Grover's Bend. The man's contribution to the horror genre has amazing. Can't wait for you to catch up on my conversation with Mick Garris.

Can you imagine having a front row seat to the start of the filmmaking careers of Will Smith, Bruce Willis and Michael Bay? Well this week's guest Screenwriter Doug Richardson did just that. In 1989 20th Century Fox hired Doug to adapt Walter Wager's novel 58 Minutes into the first sequel to the hit franchise Die Hard. In 1990, it was released as Die Hard 2, Die Harder.Around the same period, Doug Richardson and his one-time writing partner, Rick Jaffa, garnered national attention when their spec screenplay, Hellbent…and Back was the first in Hollywood to sell for a million dollars. Doug has since written and produced feature films including the box office smash Bad Boys (1995), Money Train (1995), and Hostage (2005).In addition to writing for the screen and print, Doug posts a weekly blog on his website, dougrichardson.com, where he shares personal anecdotes and insight from his thirty-year showbiz career. This time, we're taking a look at the classic reboot Rise of the Planet of the Apes and along the way we ask, how has Andy Serkis never won an Oscar, is this movie a really long vacation ad for California and just how plausible is a cure of Alzheimer's? Let's dive in… Cast & Crew Directed by Rupert Wyatt: His first film, The Escapist, was the darling of the 2008 Sundance Film Festival and afforded him the opportunity to direct Rise of the Planet of the Apes Starring Andy Serkis as Caesar: Serkis has managed to carve out a career as an actor, producer and director. Following his motion capture performance in Peter Jackson's King Kong, Serkis was on the top of the list to give life to the main character of Caesar. James Franco as Will Rodman: Franco has had an interesting career to say the least. After rising to prominence on the television show Freaks & Geeks and later in the Sam Raimi Spider-Man films, Franco has also appeared on soap operas, stage and has tried directing several times. At this point in 2011, he was just coming off an Oscar nominated performance in 127 Hours. Tobey Maguire was actually the first choice to play Will Rodman. Freida Pinto as Caroline: This was one of four films Pinto appeared in during 2011 and had risen to international fame following her starring role in the Oscar winner Slumdog Millionaire Also Starring: John Lithgow as Charles Rodman Brian Cox as John Landon Tom Felton as Dodge Landon David Oyelowo as Steven Jacobs From Tim Burton to Rupert Wyatt Believe it or not, this was not the first time 20th Century Fox attempted to reboot the Planet of the Apes franchise. Tim Burton had directed a remake of the original 1968 film that was released in 2001 and had starred Mark Wahlberg, Tim Roth, Helena Bonham Carter with Charlton Heston making a surprise cameo. The film was a critical disappointment as it currently holds a 44% on Rotten Tomatoes but managed to gross over $350 million. The journey to get the remake off the ground had taken close to 20 years and following the financial success of the remake, plans for a sequel were drawn but were cancelled with Tim Burton even going so far as to stating he'd “rather jump out a window” than return to direct a follow up. Fast forward to 2006 when screenwriting team Rick Jaffa and Amanda Silver began developing a script involving chimpanzees and genetic testing. That script would eventually become Rise of the Planet of the Apes and kick off a reboot franchise as they were quickly becoming a trend in Hollywood starting with films like Batman Begins and Casino Royale. Jaffa and Silver had the daunting task of rebooting an iconic franchise but decided to go back further and explore the genesis of a world dominated by intelligent apes. They worked backwards from the mythology mentioned in the film including the first ape named Caesar and that the first uttered was “no”. Andy Serkis and the Art of Performance Capture   Andy Serkis has widely been recognized as a pioneer of performance capture following his performance as Gollum in the Lord of the Rings film series and as Kong in Peter Jackson's King Kong. While this recognition hasn't translated to awards as the Academy doesn't recognize performances like those, he has been cited for not only his performances but also his contributions to the technology required of performance capture and his work as he coached his fellow performers in his films. While performance capture is used sporadically in Hollywood, it has become the norm for actors in video games with games like The Last of Us, Red Dead Redemption II, L.A. Noire, God of War (2018) and Hellblade: Senua's Sacrifice being recognized as prime examples of utilizing performance capture for maximum effect. Hopefully one day, the Academy or other major awards will begin to recognize the power and work that can come from these type of performances. Who's the Better Villain?

It is directed by Niki Caro, with screenplay by Rick Jaffa, Amanda Silver, Lauren Hynek, and Elizabeth Martin. Plans for a live-action remake began in 2010 but the project stalled in development hell. In March 2015, a new attempt was announced and Caro was hired to direct in February 2017. Liu was cast in the title role in November 2017, following a casting call of 1,000 actresses, and the rest of the cast joined over the following year. Filming began in August 2018 and lasted through November, taking place in New Zealand and China. With a production budget of $200 million, it is the most expensive film ever directed by a woman. Mulan's Hollywood premiere was held on March 9, 2020. Originally scheduled to be a wide theatrical release, it was ultimately cancelled in the United States after being delayed multiple times due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. Disney instead premiered the film on September 4, 2020, on Disney+ for a premium fee in countries where the service had launched. It will have a traditional theatrical release in countries without Disney+, where theaters have re-opened. The film received generally positive reviews from critics, who praised the action sequences, visuals, and performances, but criticized the screenplay. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/popcorn-junkies/message

Marriage is hard. Writing is hard. Writing with your spouse? Easy as pie. On this special Valentine's day episode we'll hear from a panel of writers who tied the knot. Rick Jaffa and Amanda Silver are best known for writing and co-producing the reboot of the Planet of the Apes franchise including Rise of the Planet of the Apes, the sequel Dawn of the Planet of the Apes and it's third installment, War for the Planet of the Apes which was released in 2017. Jaffa and Silver are currently in production co-writing Avatar 2 & 3 with director James Cameron.  Cormac and Marianne Wibblerly have been writing together since the early 1990's and are credited writers on films including National Treasure, National Treasure: Book of Secrets and Bad Boys 2. Both couples recently sat down at the 25th Austin Film Festival to discuss the ups and downs, creative differences, and the different dynamic between married writing partners with Professor Fred Strype. For every established Hollywood producer there are countless up-and-coming writers desperately trying to get their work read. Despite the odds of ‘making it’ these people continue to write. In our new podcast series, “Toiling in Obscurity” we hear from working writers on their day to day obstacles and what keeps them inspired to keep writing. Revati Dhomse and Hector Lowe won the 2018 Austin Film Festival & Josephson Entertainment Screenwriting Fellowship for their feature screenplay, The Death of Colm Canter. Both dated before becoming writing partners. We spoke with the pair at the Austin Film Festival to discuss how they use their individual strengths to keep each other accountable as they continue pursuing their writing dreams.
