Performer Stories — Fascinating Stories from Top Entertainers
This week's storytellers are broadway actor and singer Kimberly JaJuan, broadway actor E Clayton Cornelious, magician Ran'D Shine, and broadway actor Stanley Wayne Mathis. This week, in observance of Juneteenth coming up this Saturday, I'm featuring stories all from Black entertainers. If you're unaware of what Juneteenth is, having only glanced past it as a seemingly obscure holiday on your calender, Juneteenth, observed on June 19th is a day in which we celebrate the day that the slaves in Texas found out that the Emancipation Proclimation was happening. In short, it declared that "all persons held as slaves are, and henceforward shall be free." Although that happened in 1863, 158 years ago, Black people today unfortunately are still facing challenges of equality. It may or may not come as a surprise that these challenges also crop up for those in the entertainment industry as well. It's my goal this episode to shine light on some of these challenges to bring awareness and inspire change because this is something that needs to be addressed, not just by those experiencing it, but by all people. Kimberly JaJuan The first story is told by Kimberly JaJuan, a singer and actor both on and off Broadway. She's a graduate of The Eastman School and of Julliard School earning both Bachelor's and Masters Degrees. Some of her more notable (and favorite) roles have been Singing with Gloria Estefan and Harry Connick, Jr. at the Papal visit at Madison Square Garden, portraying the role of Sarah in RAGTIME on Broadway, and creating the role of Lisette alongside classmate Audra McDonald in MARIE CHRISTINE. Most recently she could have been seen bringing HERCULES to life with the Public Works at the Delacorte Theater in Central Park. She's a long time member and manager of Broadway Inspirational Voices, a diverse, professional choir of broadway artists, united to change lives through the power of music and service. She's also a broadway investor debuting as an Associate Producer on productions like American Son, Ain't Too Proud, and Hadestown to name a few. Here she is talking about a time she had to be judicious with her words in regards to cultural differences having been asked for her thoughts on a scene being rehearsed. E Clayton Cornelious The second story is by E Clayton Cornelious, a 22 year broadway veteran with credits including The Caterpillar in Wonderland, Beautiful: The Carole King Musical, Scottsboro Boys, and A Chorus Line. Add to this, a number of National Tour credits that include Kinky Boots, Sister Act, Jersey Boys, and Dirty Dancing. In addition to his countless theater credits, he's a broadway investor and producer as well as a member of the Broadway Inspirational Voices. He's also a recent recipient of the, "Legacy Robe" for his role in the Broadway hit, Ain't Too Proud: The Life and Times of the Temptations. Here's E Clayton telling about a time he didn't land a role because he didn't fit the picture of what they were looking for. Here's where you can find out more about E Clayton: E Clayton's Website: https://www.eclaycorn.com Ran'D Shine The third story is my magician Ran'D Shine, the face of the new millennium magician who's magic has taken him around the world from Cape Town South Africa performing his one-man show, "Mysterious Ways," to Presidential Inauguration banquets at the White House. He is one of the most sought after magicians on the college circuit, and has been featured at Hollywood's 'Magic Castle' as well as 'Monday Night Magic', New York's longest running Off-Broadway magic show. Here's Ran'D talking about a time he was mistaken for waitstaff at a networking event and then questioned as if he didn't belong there. Here's where you can find out more about Ran'D: Ran'D's Website: https://www.randyshine.com Stanley Wayne Mathis The final story is told by Stanley Wayne Mathis, a broadway veteran who made his debut in 1990 in the revival of Oh, Kay!. His other credits include The Book of Mormon and the original casts of Jelly's Last Jam, The Lion King and Nice Work If You Can Get It, as well as revivals of Wonderful Town, Kiss Me, Kate and You're A Good Man, Charlie Brown. Here's Stanley telling a few stories about things he's had to deal with as a Black man in the entertainmnet industry. Share Your Own Stories! Acts 10:23b-48 (NIV) Read by: Christy Gates When God calls you to engage people who are different from you culturally, socially, ideologically, do you engage for the sake of tolerance or for the sake of transformation? In today's episode of Daily Read, the last several passages come to their climax as Peter responds to the LORDs invitation through Cornelius to come to Caesarea and enter a Roman centurion's house. Cornelius represents so much of what has oppressed this religious minority in Judea throughout the lifetime of Peter and for generations before him. Peter represents the pathway to knowing and being in communion with God, the law and the religious system was fashioned in such a way that even the most god-fearing gentiles would have trouble getting close to God. So while Peter was in a position of weakness in relation to Cornelious, Cornelius was at the mercy of Peter in his desire to follow Yahweh. Peter knows that God shows no partiality, but as the Spirit leads him into this cross-cultural experience, he has a choice between a posture of tolerance, or an openness to transformation. As you listen to the passage, pay attention to the moments when Peter leans into curiosity, looking for God's transformative work among a household that would otherwise be an enemy. Because what he finds, not only transforms Cornelius and his household, but Peter and the future of the Church and the world. ----------REFLECT---------- 1. What moment in this passage sticks out to you as most significant? 2. As Peter approaches the house, Cornelius runs and falls at his feet to worship him. Can you imagine? When did Peter ever imagine a Roman Centurion bowing to him? Yet, he does not indulge in this power differential, he says to Cornelius “stand up.” This goes beyond tolerance in pursuit of a transformative dignity. How can you give dignity to people who are different from you? 3. Throughout the passage it's the Holy Spirit who is initiating the transformative work in Cornelius and his household. Before Peter could even finish what he was saying the Holy Spirit took over and fell on those gathered with Cornelius. God invites Peter into what he's wanting to do and uses him there. How might God be inviting you into what he's doing in folks who are different from you? ----------GO DEEPER---------- Bible Project: Acts 1-12 Overview >> InterVarsity Press Selections: Acts >> ----------CONNECT---------- Find an InterVarsity Chapter >> Start an InterVarsity Chapter >> Learn More >> --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/dailyread/message

God is watching our lives and how we live - but does that influence anything about what happens in our life? Join us for worship and to unpack this question this week! Do you love what's happening at Harmony? Help us advance the Kingdom by supporting our online ministry (harmonychurch.cc/give) Have kids? Check out Harmony Kids online (updated weekly) https://www.harmonychurch.cc/harmony-kids-online/!------------------- Sermon Notes Slide Key: Sermons always start with “OPENING ILLUSTRATION:” and end with “CLOSING ILLUSTRATION:"Red = Scripture slides (reflect formatting of scripture on slides, ie - underlines, bold, etc.)All scriptures are NIV unless otherwise notedBold = Slide text“b" or “B” on a line by iself = Slide break/New slideBold ALL CAPS WORDS = heading to be ignored[some text] = programming notes to be paid attention to ----------------------------- OPENING ILLUSTRATION:In 1972 a psychologist named Walter Mischel at Stanford created what has been called, “the marshmallow test.” You've probably heard of it. The experimenters put a marshmallow in front of a child with one simple instruction, “you can eat this marshmallow now, or if you wait, when I come back, I'll give you two marshmallows…” The experimenters then watched as these kids who were tormented by the marshmallow in front of them. It's pretty funny to watch them squirm and twist around, some of them taking little nibbles of the marshmallow or squishing it trying their hardest not to eat the marshmallow… TAKE THE TURN:I was reading in the scripture the other day and noticed something I'd never seen before… Listen to what happens next:It's the book of Act's the story of the church starting out - lots of supernatural thing are happening. There is a guy named Cornelius who is Jewish, not a Christian, but He's faithful to God and prays and is generous to the poor - God sends an angel to him…Acts 10:4-64 Cornelius stared at him in fear. “What is it, Lord?” he asked. The angel answered, “Your prayers and gifts to the poor have come up as a memorial offering before God. 5 Now send men to Joppa to bring back a man named Simon who is called Peter. 6 He is staying with Simon the tanner, whose house is by the sea.” Here is what struck meGod was actually paying attention to the way Cornelius lived his life Did you see it?“Your prayers and gifts to the poor have come up as a memorial offering before God.” I immediately thought of the marshmallow experiment - these researchers were giving these kids something and watching what they did with it… Now, I'm not trying to suggest that we are all involved in some grand experiment from God. But it got me thinkingWhat does scripture says about the way God looks at those who are generous with what they have… You might not know this, but because of Cornelious's generosity, he became the first non-Jewish person to be baptized as a Christian and you and I are literally sitting in this room because of the barriers that were broke down because of him.-and it all started with him being a man of prayer and being generous to the poor So, what does the scripture say about how God sees the generous? Can I take you on the journey of what I found? God sees your generosity as an indicator that you are ready for more.Jesus has just got done telling the parable of the shrewd manager - I referenced it a couple weeks ago. You might remember this part, He says to use your worldly wealth to gain friends for yourselves…and it is right after this, that Jesus says this… Listen closely. Luke 16:10-1210 “Whoever can be trusted with very little can also be trusted with much, and whoever is dishonest with very little will also be dishonest with much.11 So if you have not been trustworthy in handling worldly wealth, who will trust you with true riches? 12 And if you have not been trustworthy with someone else's property, who will give you property of your own? Jesus is saying that the “little” - the thing of no consequence that He's watching how we handle it is worldly wealth worldly wealth = the little thing “So if you have not been trustworthy in handling worldly wealth, who will trust you with true riches?“ This shouldn't shock you, God is watching the way you handle a little thing like “money” to see if you are worthy of handling more, something of significance like impacting lives for the Kingdom. There's a principle hereGetting more from God starts with giving more for God as I went on this hunt, I found this principle all through scripture: Listen to these passages: 2 Corinthians 9:6-116 Remember this: Whoever sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and whoever sows generously will also reap generously. 7 Each of you should give what you have decided in your heart to give, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver. 8 And God is able to bless you abundantly, so that in all things at all times, having all that you need, you will abound in every good work. 9 As it is written:“They have freely scattered their gifts to the poor; their righteousness endures forever.”[a]10 Now he who supplies seed to the sower and bread for food will also supply and increase your store of seed and will enlarge the harvest of your righteousness. 11 You will be enriched in every way so that you can be generous on every occasion, and through us your generosity will result in thanksgiving to God. Paul is saying that God is looking to bless those who bless. He's using an illustration from agriculture - that the more seeds you put in the ground, the larger the harvest you will reap. Or what about what Jesus said, listen to this:Luke 6:37-3837 “Do not judge, and you will not be judged. Do not condemn, and you will not be condemned. Forgive, and you will be forgiven. 38 Give, and it will be given to you. A good measure, pressed down, shaken together and running over, will be poured into your lap. For with the measure you use, it will be measured to you.” Over and over again the message seems to be that God doesn't give toGod didn't give to give TO you, He gave to give THROUGH YouThis is Living for God 101 And the idea is very clear, that God is watching the way we handle the resources He has placed in our hands to see what we do with them… Whether we are faithful, even with a little… CLOSING ILLUSTRATION:Over and over again I've seen God provide as I have stepped out to trust Him with my whole life and advance His Kingdom. When I was first in ministry I was working for a youth center to tell kids who were far from God about Jesus, and I had to raise my own salary. I could have been making pretty decent money in any other job, but I chose to follow God in this endeavor. The problem is, no one wants to support a college student. After I paid my bills monthly, I had about $50 for food for the entire month. I was trying to be tough and not tell anyone, but it was a struggle, I'll never forget the time I went to Dairy queen, I only had a quarter but my friends wanted to go and I didn't want to tell them that was all the money I had left. I just told them I wasn't hungry. They had one of those things you could drop the quarter in and if it landed on the arm you got a free peanut buster parfait. I prayed over that quarter and dropped it in. and it landed on the arm. I almost started crying! It was getting pretty bad. One day I'm at the front desk of the youth center - I had moved into it in order to try and make it. Everyone thought I was foolish, but I was trying to honor God. I'm sitting there and a guy comes to the desk and he says, “do you guys like pizza?” I was like, “of course I like pizza” He said, well good, we had a semi full of frozen pizzas that dumped over and we can't use them, do you want them? We loaded every freezer we had with frozen pizzas and I'm telling you, I ate frozen pizza for months for every meal. It was like Mana from heaven. The day the pizza ran out, this is no joke, I got a letter form this sweet family that had been praying about it and felt led to start supporting my ministry again. And I had enough money to eat. Here's what I've learned. God is looking for us all to be faithful with what we've been givenHe's watching waiting to see what we'll do with the marshmallow that's been put in front of us… Except for him the question isn't whether we will eat it, it's whether we will give it away. As I've gotten older, I've had the privilege of being on the other side of the equation now and to be the one who sends the check saying, “we were praying and felt like we were supposed to give this to you.” What about you? Here's what I want to encourage you to do today - a take home if you will I want to challenge you to develop a strategy to be generous-that may mean sitting down and prayerfully setting aside a portion of your income for God's kingdom-it may mean starting to intentionally watch for opportunities to be generous-it may mean you start a journey to study the scripture on your own about generosity But what I want to ask of you is that you will do something!
Take some time to get to know one of the leading members of our triangle community, Dr. Rose Cornelious. In this conversation, Dr. Rose talks about her life's work, her call to ministry, and her particular passion for elevating the voices and stories of oppressed women and children around the globe. Dr. Rose is actively engaged in work to better our local, regional, and international community. This is a conversation you won't want to miss!
Today’s episode guest has indeed run the gamut, A to Z. E. Clayton Cornelious has graced the boards of Broadway an unbelievable eight times during the twenty years since his debut. The show then was Disney’s The Lion King, and today this Broadway ensemblist is bringing to life the electrifying story of The Temptations in Ain’t Too Proud. Throughout the years his career has span the gamut, performing in everything from The Scottsboro Boys to A Chorus Line. And in addition to his work onstage, he is a producer and investor on shows including Caroline, or Change and Hadestown. E. Clayton joined me over the phone to discuss how he keeps the momentum moving forward in his career, as well as how it is never too late to learn something new. This week on Dork Quest the team continue their jouney in their favourite direction, despite being trapped in a fork themed town. Darak upsets a homeless man, Bumfluff fires a flock of seagulls from his bow, and Cornelious demonstrates his astounding freestyle rap skillz. And Steve (me, the DM) drops some truly magnificent puns. If I do say so myself.
I'm Daija from the city of Oakland. I was blind for 10 years but now my eyes are opened. And even though my eyes didn't work, I swear I've seen things that would make a lion's heart hurt. That's why I'm standing here today, to tell the story of this blind girl who moved to AK from the Bay.

God is longing to give us revelations about our marriages, our finances and our physical bodies ideas that could change everything for us. But, many of us are missing a critical precursor to divine revelation. After studying the life of Cornelious, get ready to learn a few disciplines that open us up to a supernatural response from God. (Acts 10).
Is Prince Cornelious the G.O.A.T? Carrie, Havana, and Dee discuss. The ladies get technical today as we talk about storytelling mechanisms and debate whether or not the character arcs and story structure work well in this film and become Cornelious stans along the way.

Hey Hey Ape Fans! We are back with an all-new show where we look at the episode from Return to the Planet Of The Apes, Mission of Mercy. This was the 11th episode in the series and originally aired November 15, 1975. Show Synopsis As a result of the dog fight with the flying dragon creature in the episode Screaming Wings, most of the plane's fuel is gone. Bill, Jeff and Judy must replenish the fuel somehow since it is their only way to keep watch over the mountain pass to New Valley. Using an abandoned gorilla truck, Bill and Jeff leave to find more fuel. Meanwhile, Urko orders his troops to find some way of getting into New Valley to capture the humans. Shortly after Bill and Jeff have left, Nova becomes very ill. Thanks to Ron’s 21st century medical training he diagnoses the symptoms as a very contagious lung disease that I can’t pronounce, which is fatal after seventy-two hours. Now Judy has to race to find Cornelious and Zira who just may have the serum... Giveaway! But that's not all! We have a new contest where we will be giving away a copy of the new Planet of the Apes: Tales From the Forbidden Zone courtesy of Titan Books. On our last episode we spoke with co-authors and editors Rich Handley and Jim Beard as well as author John Jackson Miller to get you excited about this new book set in the classic Apes era. We also give our spoiler-free review of the book, and point out a favorite passage. Without giving anything away it does have to do with a top-heavy head garment worn by Urko. We tend to think that was a wink and a nod to Talking Apes TV, but we could be wrong. To Enter Contest Go to Facebook.com/Talking ApesTV and see the post pinned to the top of the page. All you have to do is comment about what classic Apes character you are most excited to read about. You can't just like the post you have to comment. Contest ends midnight PST March 1, 2017. Richard and Mark almost make it to the end of the episode without breaking into an argument, then came the great puddle debate. Weigh in for yourself then GO APE.... Hey Hey Ape Fans! Welcome back to Talking Apes TV! We kick off this episode by looking at some awesome costume cross-overs from Star Wars Celebration Europe. These have got to be the best we've ever seen - Planet of the Star Wars! Fans dressed as vintage Apes wearing Stormtrooper, X-Wing and TIE Fighter pilot uniforms. All lead by Darth Zaius. Speaking of crossovers, Boom Comics who mashed-up Star Trek and Planet of the Apes is at it again with - Tarzan on the Planet of the Apes! We review the details as given at time of recording for this 5 issue mini-series. When war between man and ape breaks out, which side will Caesar and his brother Tarzan choose? First issue to be released 9/28/2016. "Trail to the Unknown" Synopsis (Airdate 11/1/1975) Bill, Jeff and Judy have to get the humanoids away from their home before Urko’s imminent attack. They build rafts and sail away to their new home in New Valley (as foretold in Tunnel of Fear). Meanwhile in Ape City, Dr. Zaius visits Cornelius and Zira to thank them for stealing Urko's plane (as seen in last episode ‘Screaming Wings'). By doing so, Zaius feels that Zira and Cornelious have saved simian society from Urko's dictatorship. Hungry for power, Urko has tracked the humans to their new home and plans to destroy them once and for all! We have a blast reviewing this episode since we are starting to see the bigger story. They better hurry up since there are only 4 more episodes to the series! It's always a bonus when the writers think about continuity and include Easter eggs from the films and live-action TV show. And we see Urko spiraling further into iNsaNity! During a commercial break, we hear a commercial for a toy that we're sure Urko played with as a child. Probably made him into the Apes is he today. And we hear from MEGO and their KISS collection of figures. (WARNING: Once you hear that commercial jingle, you WILL be singing it for days.) Listen, have fun, and Go APE! About the author & the story. I have always enjoyed an ice cold beer, especially on a hot summer day. Whether I choose a beer, a glass of wine or cocktail occasionally depends on my mood and the foods I am enjoying. My taste in beer leans toward the micro brews or European beers. While Coors was the old standby for my parents, I like to try different brews and steer clear of the US mass produced beers. Living on the Central Coast of California in wine country I tend to choose a local wine most often. For the next year I have vowed to try more beers, especially locally brewed and learn as much as I can. While guys may share a beer with us girls, the art of brewing and the fanaticism surrounding the beverage has been mostly the domain of men. I will pass along my adventures into the manly world of beer through this website. How it all started. It all started with the simple idea that having a kegerator in your home was “green” and one little step in decreasing the number of bottles and cans we send to the recycler. A while back, I saw a program on the Planet Green network about a couple in Brooklyn, NY that had installed a tap above their kitchen counter. I thought it was a brilliant idea to go green for any beer lover, thus the idea of putting a kegerator in our kitchen was born, which meant we might as well gut the kitchen and start over. Needless to say, my beer loving husband took the idea and ran with it. Not only were we able to find a place to hide the keg refrigerator, we designed our new concrete countertops so the tap could be above the sink and thus no mess. Many of my girlfriends have cursed me as their husbands are now ready to remodel just to have a tap in the kitchen. I found a used kegerator for a great price of $250 (saving about 400). The only problem with the kitchen remodel was that the access point for the kegs would be from the front porch so then we had to remodel the entrance to our home. More work – but in the long run it improved the look and feel of the house. Now with a tap in the kitchen and cold draught beer on hand I have a renewed fondness for beer. Good beer that is! The inaugural keg was Fat Tire Amber Ale by New Belgium Brewing Co. There is nothing better than an icy glass filled with draught beer. We had been buying Fat Tire in the bottles, but I still think it tastes better from the tap. Once we were all set up, I realized I had created a monster in my husband and not for the reasons you may be thinking. Having the kegerator has now led to home brewing. In less than a month, we have become setup with additional Cornelious kegs, large kettles for brewing, glass containers called carboys for fermenting and more. We have 2 batches brewing and eagerly await the day of tasting. While my husband is the primary consumer and brewmaster at our house, I am surprised at my interest in the process and the different types of beers and all that goes along with it. So for now I will share my adventures into the world of beer and brewing from a woman’s point of view. So far, it does appear that it is still very much a man’s world and we will see if they will let me into the club, even if it is only a temporary membership.
