I want to celebrate a huge milestone with you - Episode #100! I can't believe we've made it this far and I want to take a moment to thank you for being a part of this amazing journey. In today's episode, I'm going to share one of my secrets to staying focused, and it's simple, yet powerful. Seven years ago, I started wearing a bracelet on my wrist with a metal circle that had one word on it - MY WORD. This word was meant to remind me of what I was focusing on, who I was becoming, and to inspire, ground and push me forward. I've gone through different seasons in my life and my word has changed several times. In today's episode, I want to inspire you to choose your own word and help you discover what that word may be. Think about your season, what you're focusing on, and what resonates with you. Your word could be anything that inspires and motivates you, and it could change as you go through different seasons in life. I'll also be sharing some of my favorite words and the stories behind them, hoping to inspire you to choose your own word. Thank you again for your support and I can't wait for you to join me for Episode #100 and to discover you're own WORD! This was no easy task and I'm not here telling you it was. I had to take full responsibility for where my life was and then decide where I wanted it to go. It was time to stop complaining about my situation and do something about it. I had to stop looking for others to validate me and start having my own back. This required looking inside myself for the answers instead of looking outside myself. I told you it wasn't easy … but I wouldn't change one thing about my journey because it led me right here to you reading about it, maybe identifying with aspects of it and hopefully being inspired to get UNSTUCK.

On the flip side, if you start challenging yourself to start looking for all the things that are going well, the progress you've made and the small steps you've taken forward, YOU'LL FIND THEM TOO! But which experiences are you choosing to focus on more? Not sure? Answer this, if ten people give you a complement and one person gives you a criticism, what do you pay more attention to most the many complements or the one criticism? In this episode, I'll explain the biological wiring that guarantees you find what you're looking for and ways to rewire your brain so you find more of what you say you want. That's why you need to pay attention to the conversations you're quietly having in your head. The truth is that voice in your head can either build you up or tear you down. In the third episode of the UNSTUCK YOURSELF SERIES I'll share with you the importance of setting a goal and the elements of an effective goal. It's really hard to get where you're going if you don't know where that is. Goals give you direction and focus. One of the biggest reasons you get stuck is because of your thinking. That's not an attack, it's good news. It's good news because that means you can get unstuck all by yourself. It doesn't require anyone in your life to change, you don't have to massively alter your life to get relief and simply becoming aware of what's going on between your two ears can be all it takes to wiggle loose. This is the second podcast in the 'Unstuck Yourself Series' and in it I will show you how your mind is creating your experience in life. Once you learn this, you can't ignore it. It allows you to take ownership of your feelings and empowers you to decide what story you're going to tell yourself about everything. There are no worksheets this week. All I want you to do is create awareness around your thinking. You can do this by simply writing down what you're feeling and getting curious as to why? What are the facts? What are the thoughts swimming around your head about those facts? Once you can see the story you're telling yourself, you then get to decide what you want to do with that story. If you feel stuck, want to wiggle loose but you don't know where to start … GOOD NEWS!!!!! This is the first episode in my UNSTUCK YOURSELF series! Over the next several weeks I will be laying out the blueprint to UNSTUCK YOURSELF. First, I want you to know you're not alone and nothing is ‘wrong' with you. Feeling stuck is a universal experience most people have at some point in their life. Being stuck is one thing. Staying stuck in another. Oftentimes you don't have control over what happened in your life that wedged you between a rock and a hard place. What happened, happened. It's now up to you to decide what happens next. I'm kicking off this series by inviting you to clearly define what you want. I know that's a broad question but give yourself permission to just explore what comes up for you when you ask it. Allow yourself to want something just because you want it. You don't have to explain why you want it, how it would benefit you or your family or the reasons behind wanting it. To some of you that sounds amazing and exciting, to others it sounds irresponsible and to some it sounds selfish. Just notice what that little voice in your head said when I invited you to allow yourself to want something just because you want it. One of the biggest reasons people get stuck is because they stop growing. They do the same thing over and over, day after day and call that a life. Try something different. Get curious about the little voice and its reaction to wanting what you want. I'm going to help you do that in this podcast because you have to be clear on the results you want to create in your life if you're going to get unstuck and create them. You're going to get a few simple questions to ask yourself to help uncover what you want. If you already know what you want, GREAT, I've got a few questions for you as well. There's a time to grind it out and push forward and there's a time to slow down and take a break. It can be tough to figure out which one you should do. My recommendation is to try one method, see if it works and go from there. For most of my life I've adopted the 'grind it out, push forward' method and it has served me well ... until it didn't. Recently I've taken a break from this very podcast because grinding it out and pushing forward when what I really needed was rest and reflection wasn't working for me. So I took a break. I pushed paused on a few things so I could reprioritize where my time, attention and effort was going and I gave myself the space I needed to rest and reflect. This podcast is about what I learned during that time. We are conditioned to just put our heads down and make stuff happen and there is definitely a time and place for that mindset. But have you ever slowed down enough to reevaluate why you're doing that and whether or not it's truly serving you right now? Don't know how to do that? I'm going to help you in this episode because sometimes you need to slow down now to go faster later. Want to shut up the inner critic and have more peace? I don't like the phrase, 'Go big or go home.' I understand why people use it but I think focuses on the wrong thing. You can't 'go big' ALL the time. It's impossible. In fact, you can't 'go big' until you've done small ... A LOT! It's the commitment and the consistency of taking the small steps that eventually set you up to 'go big.' Without the small steps there are no big results. You can try to go from zero-to-100 right out of the gate but chances are you can't sustain that speed very long because you haven't done the work to earn it. For most people it's too much too fast and it just leads to frustration, burn out and the false belief that others can do it but you can't. I'm a big believer in setting big goals but breaking them down into small steps and celebrating every inch forward along the way. When you do that, you don't quit before you even start, you create momentum and experience success early. This works because SUCCESS BREEDS SUCCESS. If you've struggled to set goals and get started or if you're a pro at setting them but fizzle out fast, this is the podcast for you. Want to quiet the negative nelly in your head? Have you ever said, or had someone say to you, "It could be worse, you could be _____." Or maybe you've thought, "well at least I'm not ____" or, "It's better than being ____." These are all examples of comparative suffering. This is when we look at someones pain or struggle and minimize it by comparing it to the difficult time someone else is having. When I was a new mom, I really struggled balancing my new role at home with my professional role at the radio station. I once had someone say, 'It could be worse, you could have 5 kids at home to parent and not just one.' Yeah, I'm sure parenting 5 kids is really hard but that doesn't mean my struggle of parenting one wasn't hard for me. I believe that person was just trying to provide perspective but what they did was minimize what I was going through. We do this to ourselves as well. We try to make sense of our own pain by comparing it to other people's pain. "I shouldn't complain about how much I'm working, at least I have a job." The upside to this is it can provide perspective. The downside is it minimizing your own feelings. Just because you have perspective doesn't mean your feelings magically go away. If you don't pay attention to those feelings and allow them to be there, they will fester and show up at inopportune times. If you've ever judged how your feeling because it's not as bad as what someone else is experiencing, you need to listen to this episode. Want to quiet the noise in your head? After 20 years in the news business, I walked away from what people thought I should do and I did what I wanted to do … coach people who are stuck like I was and help them find relief, awareness and control within themselves. You've heard the saying, 'The only thing constant in life is change.' While that's true, it's not very helpful when you're the one experiencing the change and don't know what to do about it. One of the biggest changes parents will go through is when the kids grow up and leave the house. I've had friends describe it as a 'loud quiet' in the house and it feels like you're wearing your shoes on the wrong feet. My guest this week knows that feeling and can help. Allie Hill is an Empty-Nest Life Coach who helps moms create a roadmap for themselves so they can still feel purposeful, content and excited about this next chapter of their life. If you're looking for clarity on your next steps of what to do during this time of transition, this is the podcast episode for you. Want to quiet the noise in your head? Separating the facts from your story is one of the simplest, most powerful tools I teach. But just because it's simple doesn't mean it's easy. In this podcast I'll explain why this concept is so powerful, how to figure out what's a fact and what's a story (believe it or not this can be tricky) and what to do with that valuable information. By separating the facts from the story you'll get clarity and perspective that may have eluded you up until this point. If you tend to overthink issues, worry about stuff and get overwhelmed easily ... this is the episode for you. Want to quiet the noise in your head? Byron Katie said it best, "When you argue with reality you lose but only 100% of the time." It's true! When you argue with what's actually happening, because you think something else should be happening, it doesn't change anything. All it does is make you feel like crap. You create more suffering for yourself. Just because you think something 'shouldn't' be happening doesn't change the fact it IS happening. Or vice versa, just because you think something 'should' be happening doesn't change the fact that it isn't happening. This week I share my own struggle with reality. I get personal and open up about some of the ways I've been arguing with reality and what it's caused me. I know a lot of you are going through some stuff right now and I hope that by sharing what's happening in my world, you're able to learn from my experience and find a little more peace in your own world. My life has been a bit hectic and chaotic lately. The routine and structure I value has been disrupted, leaving me a bit 'itchy.' I gave myself permission NOT to do a podcast this week but I decided to crack the mic and share with you what I've learned through this rough patch. You hear me say, 'there's value in vulnerability.' I'm being vulnerable with the hope you get value out of it. And if you don't, that's okay too. Want to feel better faster? Grab my free guide: 4 Ways to Feel Better FASTER. Being a parent is one of the most challenge and rewarding things you'll ever do. Being the parent of an infant or toddler is no easy task with all those sleepless nights and temper tantrums. Parenting teenagers on the other hand, is a whole different ballgame. It's tough finding that balance between telling your kids what to do and letting them figure it out on their own. That's why I've invited Kristen Goodman on the podcast this week. She helps parents communicate with their teens without yelling and power struggles. If you feel like your teen doesn't listen to you and you find yourself constantly yelling, worrying and frustrated over their choices, then this is the episode for you. Kristen walks you through how to stay calm instead of losing your cool, what to say to your teens to get them to start talking to you and how to feel more confident and in control of your life so you can stop managing everyone else's emotions and expectations. How often do you think about what you put in your mouth? Do you ever think about what you eat and how it impacts your body? Most of us do. If you're anything like me you probably think about eating more fruits and veggies and eating less sugar and junk. I know when I do my body feels better. Have you ever thought about what you put into your brain? The impact news, social media, and tv has on your mind? Most of us don't. If you're anything like me, the first thing you grab in the morning is your phone. I know when I do I start my day off a bit stressed. The type of media you consume, and how much you consume is going to have a dramatic effect on your mood, your stress level and your overall sense of well being. You've heard of the ‘Food Pyramid.' In this podcast I introduce the ‘Media Pyramid.' It's the same concept but instead of veggies, protein and carbs, it's books, news and social media. This comparison or analogy really helps me and I want to share it with you because it takes this abstract idea of media consumption and makes it more concrete so you feel empowered to make healthier choices. What's your word worth? When you say you're going to do something, do you actually do it? Most of us believe we follow through on our word and most of the time we probably do. But I don't think we're as good at it as we think. AND I don't believe we truly know what going back on our word is costing us. Sure, life happens and sometimes we need to drop back ten and punt, but that is the exception and not the norm. I'm talking about the times you just change your mind and then break a commitment. Make no mistake, you're ALLOWED to change your mind. In fact, I encourage it. BUT ... when you do, there is an important step you need to take in order to live with integrity for yourself and others. In this episode I'll take a look at the different ways we go back on our word, the reasons we do it and a simple way to turn it all around. Want to feel better faster? Are you miserable in your marriage but not enough to get a divorce? Do you feel more like roommates than lovers? Do you ever wonder if you made a mistake marrying your spouse? Do you feel like your happiness is contingent upon everyone else in the house being happy? Do you put your needs on the back burner to ‘keep the peace?' Those are some pretty heavy (but relatable) questions. If you answered ‘yes' to any of them then this is the episode for you. I'm sitting down and digging into all of that with Certified Advanced Relationship and Marriage Coach, Crystal Hansen. While it's common to feel lost in the roles of spouse, parent, provider, or household manager and feel as though your life isn't your own, it also doesn't have to continue that way. Crystal talks about the importance of vulnerability in creating connections, why it only takes one person to ‘fix' a marriage and why a ‘polite' marriage isn't necessarily a good one. If you're wanting more connection, less stress and a way to shift your perspective on your marriage than listen to this episode.
