The British cousin of an Israeli hostage held by Hamas in Gaza has described his family's ongoing anguish ahead of a milestone update on the fate of the remaining captives this weekend. Adam Ma'anit, who's from Brighton and is digital communication officer at the Board of Deputies of British Jews, told The Standard podcast they are hoping for news very soon about Tsachi Idan, who is among 94 remaining hostages.Idan was dragged away from his kibbutz home after his 18-year-old daughter, Maayan, was shot dead by a Hamas gunman in the October 7 terror attacks over 15 months ago.A phased ceasefire deal has now seen the first three hostages released in exchange for Palestinian prisoners held in Israeli jails, with further releases scheduled. But it comes amid a spike in antisemitic attacks and shortly before Holocaust Memorial Day. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

The Song of the Wellsprings

As we go through pesukim from Perek Shira, we are now in the pasuk that the wellsprings sing. A wellspring is an underground source of water, or well that gives forth water. It's nice and clean. And what do they say? וְשָׁרִים כְּחֹלְלִים כָּל מַעְיָנַי בָּךְ: (תהילים פז ז) Those that sing and those that dance, all my wellsprings are to You. The Radak on Tehilim says, Kol Mayannai/all my wellsprings means the wellsprings of my heart- My heart will be like a wellspring that will give forth these songs. So we're comparing our hearts to a wellspring. A wellspring is deep underground, and it comes out and gives forth water. The Zohar tells us, quoted by the Sefer Shev Shematatta in his introduction, that a person is born into this world, and he is a Bor /a pit , an empty hole that you put water into from the outside. He receives from his teachers and his educators and his parents. Then he goes on to be a Be'er . A Be'er is a well, that you have to go down and draw water from. And finally, there is a Maayan a wellspring , which really shoots out the water. It's a different nature than just a plain old well. A wellspring gives forth water. It's never ending, and ever flowing. Like the Mishna in Pirkei Avot, when it describes the students of Rabbi Yochanan and Ben Zakai, it calls Rav Elazar ben Arach a Ma'ayan Hamitgaber, an overflowing wellspring, giving over his Torah, with tremendous hidushim, constantly coming up with new ideas. That's a Maayan . And his good trait is a Lev Tov/a good heart . Because our heart is like a wellspring. We have to turn our heart from a pit to a well , to wellspring which is just overflowing. That's Maayanei Libi/The wellsprings of my heart. My heart is a source of song and a source of all kinds of goodness coming out of my heart. The Midrash says on this pasuk in Midrash Tehilim ( perek 87,7) Rav Yehuda says, in the name of Rabi Meir, Just like the wellspring is constantly flowing new waters at all times, so too, we are going to sing new songs. This is referring to the future when the Jewish people will all turn into Ma'ayans . Rav Sadok Hakohen tells us in his sefer Resiseh Layla that just like Hashem has no boundaries, there is no end to what we could fathom in Him, and therefore, our knowledge of Him keeps on growing and growing to no end. Just that this world is limited, so there's a limit to our understanding. But in the future, we're going to have a never-ending understanding of God. And with the never ending understanding is going to come never-ending song, because the song comes from the excitement of the new understanding. We're going to constantly be singing new songs of new understandings, and it's going to forever be a Shir Hadash . That's the song of the wellsprings to tell us this concept of the never-ending songs. The wellsprings are telling us, Kol Maayanei Bach/All of my wellsprings should be on You. I should constantly be developing new understandings of God. And as the new understandings come, the new songs come. Az Yashir Moshe , which is Tehiyat HaMetim in the future, Bezrat Hashem.

It positively impacted the lives of so many women but something was missing. Many of us feel like we're living in survival mode, physically living, taking care of all the to-do lists and creating routines to feel more comfortable abroad. We're so focused on that, that we forget to actually live. Looking back on our personal lives, we realized that what helped us move abroad with ease, and truly create a life we enjoy living every day, was our mindset. The more we positively trained our mindset and practiced daily, the better we dealt with challenges. We just couldn't keep this to ourselves. It was no surprise, as we've been expat since forever, that we both wanted to help women moving abroad to do the same.

Dr. Maayan Levy is an assistant professor of microbiology at the University of Pennsylvania, where her lab studies the communication between the microbiome and its host, with a focus on the gut microbiome and its relationship to diet, immune system function, and disease. We discuss: her recent study linking the ketogenic diet to lower risk of colon cancer; what the ketogenic diet is and what the metabolic state of ‘ketosis' does in the body; molecules called ketone bodies, such as BHB, and the extent to which BHB supplementation can recapitulate some of the physiological effects of the ketogenic diet; how the microbiome influences the function and development of the immune system; and the hygiene hypothesis, the idea that modern human cultures may be too clean, or rely too heavily on antibiotics and other technology, and interfere with our microbiome in ways that may be detrimental to metabolic and immunological health.USEFUL LINKSSign up for the weekly Mind & Matter newsletter[https://mindandmatter.substack.com/?sort=top]Follow Nick's work through Linktree:[https://linktr.ee/trikomes]Elysium Health, a life sciences company focused on aging research.
