While the New Testament clearly emphasizes baptism in Jesus' name for salvation, it does not directly state which members of the church are qualified to perform them. In this message, Andrew teaches from Matthew 6:2–4 and 19–21 on generosity as a way of life, showing that giving is not about obligation or public recognition but about cultivating a heart of gratitude, trust, and worship toward God. Everything belongs to the Lord and believers are stewards, not owners, of their resources. True generosity flows from an awareness of God's abundant grace and a desire to participate in His blessing of others, rather than seeking personal status or material gain. By giving quietly and faithfully, believers align their hearts with God's purposes, invest in what lasts eternally, and experience freedom from the grip of materialism. Practicing generosity, he taught, forms the heart—reorienting worship toward God and producing joy, simplicity, and lasting impact for His kingdom.

Fasting invites believers to create space for God by voluntarily setting aside good things, aligning body and spirit in worship. It trains the heart to hunger for the presence of Jesus more than physical satisfaction and reminds the Church of its identity as His bride awaiting the final feast. Practiced rightly, fasting becomes a rhythm of renewal—an embodied act of love that shapes the soul to find joy, strength, and satisfaction in God alone.

In this message, Andrew teaches from Matthew 6:9–13 on prayer as a way of life, showing that it is not about achieving outcomes but about living in continual communion with God. Prayer is meant to reorient the heart from striving for results to abiding in God's presence, where transformation happens over time through consistency and love. True prayer is an act of attention—adoring God, aligning with His will, and allowing His Spirit to reshape the inner life. By turning from the distractions of outcome-driven culture toward a rhythm of humble dependence and worship, believers learn to dwell in the reality of God's kingdom and become what they behold in His presence.

Nic teaches that reconciliation is a central practice of life in God's kingdom, rooted in Jesus' command in Matthew 5:23–24 to seek peace with others before offering worship. True reconciliation restores what sin, pride, and misunderstanding have fractured, embodying the heart of God who brings estranged people back into right relationship. It requires humility to confess wrongs, courage to take initiative, and grace to forgive without demanding repayment. Scripture portrays reconciliation as a visible expression of the gospel—seen in stories like Jacob and Esau, Joseph and his brothers, and the prodigal son—where repentance and mercy create restored unity. Within the church, reconciliation sustains genuine community, breaking cycles of resentment and hostility that erode spiritual life. Believers are therefore called to prioritize mending relationships as a form of worship and discipleship, reflecting God's reconciling work through Christ and making peace a lived reality among His people.

Andrew taught from James 5:13–20 that confession is not about shame but about freedom and restoration. Sin disrupts the wholeness God intends, leaving people hiding in isolation, yet God always moves toward us in love, covering our sin through the cross of Christ. Confession brings this reality into the open, allowing us to walk in the light and experience healing. Throughout history, revival movements have been marked by honest confession and deep prayer, creating communities where people are fully known and fully loved. Practicing confession in everyday life—whether with a spouse, in recovery groups, or small discipleship circles—breaks secrecy, nurtures holiness, and restores joy. Believers are called to reject shame, step out of hiding, and embrace confession as a way of life, so that God's people can live in freedom and become a credible, prepared witness for renewal.

In this sermon, Andrew discusses building one's life on the uncommon foundation of Jesus's teachings, using the metaphor of a house built to withstand a storm. The talk centers on the practice of kingdom hospitality as a way of life and a key part of the church's mission. Drawing from Matthew 5, the idea that believers are the "light of the world" is explored. This is connected to Jesus's declaration, "I am the light of the world," explaining that before believers are asked to shine their light, Jesus first shines his light on them. A Christian's purpose is to reflect this light, particularly in dark places. Two essential qualities for shining this light are being "on fire" with the presence of God and being visible. Being visible means establishing a courageous and strategic presence in the world to draw people to the light, not by seeking relevance, but by building trust. The primary way Jesus modeled this was by gathering people around the dinner table, building relationships, and sharing life with them, an approach exemplified by initiatives like the Alpha course.

In this message, Katy taught on Jesus' words about the narrow path that leads to life, showing how true flourishing comes not through rule-keeping or cultural definitions of success but through transformation of the heart expressed in community. She warned against the dangers of individualism and isolation, which our culture often disguises as freedom, noting that this has even infiltrated the church and contributed to loneliness. Instead, the invitation of Jesus is to walk the narrow path of life together, practicing counterformation against the currents of culture, living as family who remind one another of our identity as sons and daughters of God, and experiencing healing in the context of trusted relationships. Community becomes the setting where we are re-parented into God's family, resist the idols of self and division, and encounter grace that restores and transforms us. The call is to step beyond comfort, risk deeper connection, and embrace life in the kingdom with others, where God's presence brings belonging, transformation, and joy.

In this message, Nic introduces the Orthopraxy series by teaching from Matthew 7:24–27, where Jesus contrasts the wise and foolish builders. The focus is not only on right belief (orthodoxy) but on right practice (orthopraxy), showing that hearing Jesus' words must lead to putting them into action. Outwardly, lives may look similar—prayer, fasting, generosity—but the true foundation is revealed in whether these flow from religious duty or from being deeply loved by God. Spiritual practices are not meant as checklists but as ways to shape our hearts and align our loves with Christ. The call is to live with intention, building on the foundation of Jesus through obedience born out of love, so that faith is not surface-level but transformative, leading us to become people who reflect God's kingdom in every part of life.

When it comes to the Christian life Orthodoxy (right belief), Orthopraxy (right practice), and Doxology (worship) work together like a 3-fold braided cord. If any of the 3 are compromised, the whole cord suffers. So, at Westminster, we don't just commit to theological education in the abstract. Some might be tempted to say "I'm just going to study theology and not worry about my moral life, my personal relationship with God, or the quality of my worship. I'll deal with those things later." To do so is actually to misunderstand theology in the first place. You cannot have good theology without a heart for the Lord. In this episode Nate Shannon sits down with Jerry McFarland to discuss how Westminster commits the sanctification of our student body.

Fetus John the Baptist knew exactly who Jesus was, according to Luke. Adult John the Baptist sends emissaries to ask Jesus who he is. Jesus does not answer John's question, but rather instructs the question-askers to simply report what they see and what they hear. It seems that, according to Jesus, his identity must be shown, enacted, embodied for it to be real. Similarly, our Anabaptist faith has a centuries-long history of being done, enacted, embodied. Our faith is a lived faith and has traditionally been proclaimed more in deed than in word. This is why the decision of our denomination to be the named plaintiff in a lawsuit against the Dept. of Homeland Security (Mennonite Church USA et al. v. United States Department of Homeland Security et al.) is completely in line with our 500-year history of following Jesus. Because our faith IS caring for our neighbor. Right Doctrine is NOT Enough: Why Orthopraxy Matters

Having right doctrine is important, but it's not enough. That why orthopraxy (having correct practices) matters. People like to debate theology. Many people believe that Christians should make an effort to persuade other Christians to their understanding of scripture - and the bible is clear, while pointless debates are foolish, persuading others to understand sound doctrine is a good and important thing to do. Right doctrine is how the church is made one. Unity comes from the right and complete understanding of who Christ is. But many are satisfied with only having right doctrine. They do not go on to apply it to their lives and to have right practices. And when orthopraxy is ignored, it is reasonable to ask whether the doctrine was ever really and correctly understood. In every field of study, there is a recognized difference between abstract knowledge and application. And as anyone who has tried to build a building or follow a recipe for the first time knows, applying knowledge can be much more difficult than obtaining it. In this episode, we want to discuss why right doctrine is insufficient. While the wicked do not love right doctrine, it is almost always actions that they find most offensive. When Christ came to his own, they would not receive him, and while many of them were offended by his doctrine, what the religious leaders were most offended by was that he revealed them to be hypocrites, not just by his words, but by his deeds. We also want to talk about how orthropraxy and orthodoxy cannot be separated from one another. And when we try to separate them, we often lose what doctrine we have or create practices that teach a false doctrine. We can see this in how the world describes “servant leadership”. Leaders really should serve those they are called to lead, but they also still have authority. As the world tries to destroy Biblical manhood and womanhood, even among those who have correct doctrine the practice of male head of household and male representative authority has been discarded and as a result the doctrine has grown weaker. So please join as a we discuss this and many other points related to the question: “Why is orthopraxy, which means to practice what is right, important?” Listen to the audio version here: https://theconqueringtruth.com/2024/09/right-doctrine-is-not-enough-why-orthopraxy-matters-ep-187-audio/ Timecodes 00:00:00 Example to the World 00:07:22 Honoring with Obedience 00:19:55 Linking Doctrine and Practice 00:29:39 Walking in the Flesh 00:37:51 Revelation of False Believers 00:44:11 Hypocrisy 00:53:48 What to Do Production of Reformation Baptist Church of Youngsville, NC Permanent Hosts - Dan Horn, Charles Churchill and Joshua Horn Technical Director - Timothy Kaiser Theme Music - Gabriel Hudelson

Well, it better be in Christ. Paul refutes the Colossian heresy by emphasizing Christ alone as the foundation of our faith, and how that faith is lived out through right belief and right practice. Our works, efforts, and merits count for nothing in the salvation equation. Summary In this conversation, Tim and Pete Enns respond to a video discussing deconstruction by Alisa Childers, Tim Barnett, and Sean McDowell. They explore the concept of a biblical worldview and its limitations and the definition and significance of deconstruction. They also discuss the role of biblical authority and the challenges of interpreting and applying scripture.  Pete and Tim explore the nuances of doubt and apologetics, the clash between modernism and postmodernism, the complexity of biblical interpretation, and the challenges of biblical inerrancy. They discuss the role of doubt in faith, the limitations of historical claims in the Bible, and the need for a nuanced understanding of biblical authority. The conversation delves into the rhetoric of war and the labeling of deconstruction as the doctrine of demons. Takeaways The concept of a biblical worldview can be limiting and oversimplifies the complexity of faith and theology. Biblical authority is a topic of theological discussion and interpretation, and it is important to recognize the diverse and historical context of the Bible. The role of personal experience and subjectivity should be acknowledged and respected in discussions of faith and theology. Doubt can play a positive role in the development of faith, and it should be embraced and explored rather than suppressed. The interpretation of the Bible should consider the historical context and the complexities of biblical texts, rather than relying on a simplistic view of biblical inerrancy. The church needs to address and confront issues of spiritual abuse and hold leaders accountable for their actions. Orthopraxy, the practice of faith, is often overlooked in favor of orthodoxy, the right beliefs. Deconstruction is a personal and often painful process that should be met with empathy and support. The rhetoric of war and labeling deconstruction as the doctrine of demons can be harmful and divisive. There is a need for further discussion and exploration of these topics to foster understanding and growth. People treat the church like a dentist. You went a lot as a kid but when it was up to you, you sorta dropped the ball. If we don't brush our teeth for a few days we feel dirty, but we have no problem not joining worship with other believers. Let's talk about why we as believers can't claim Christ and not also claim the church. The Orthopraxy Podcast exists to talk about the Christian life and living out what we believe. Every week we sit down with a guest to talk about the practical things in our faith. Join us every Wednesday for new episodes. Orthopraxy is a ministry of Finish Line Ministries International. How should we as Christians address the culture at hand? Should we face them head-on or be more concerned with our individual Christian communities? Today I talk about two options we have as the church- Theonomy or the Benedict Option. Both of them are seeking to figure out how we can weather the cultural storm. Whatever option resonates with you it's not possible to stay in the middle. The Orthopraxy Podcast exists to talk about the Christian life and living out what we believe. For additional notes and resources check out Douglas' website.Notes on James 2:14-26:The word “deeds” is more palatable for many religious people than “works,” with is association with trying to earn our salvation.Vs.14-16 seem to address a real situation among the believers to whom James is writing. See also 1 John 3:16-18, Matt 25:31-46, and Gal 6:10.Keep in mind also the likely famine conditions in Judea at the time of James's letter. 2 Cor 8-9 and Acts 11:28 refer to this hardship.I admit it's difficult to know who exactly is speaking in vs. 18, or the exact point (though I assume it's fully in line with the thought of vs.14-17 and 19-26).Demons have mere intellectual assent (v.19).The Shema‘  (Hear, O Israel...) is found in Deut 6:4.Were some wealthy persons allowed into the fellowship whose behavior did not match their profession of faith?Orthodoxy (right belief) isn't enough. Orthopraxy (right behavior) is essential; it completes and confirms orthopraxy. There is no such thing as faith in a vacuumBoth persons were proselytes to the faith. Both were commended for faith because faith was complemented by deeds.A widely twisted and ignored verse is 2:24Liberals often accept that this is a “contradiction”—that James and Paul are somehow at odds with each other.Evangelicals – ignore v.24, esp. when they hold to the “once saved, always saved” teaching. Many evangelicals and other Protestants hold to the slogan "faith alone," which does not appear in the N.T.Further: for "Why I am Not an Evangelical—Or Am I?" please click here.
