We went back to the Silver Age of Adult Cinema and picked up a starlet that had been in over 120 films. Her name is Flame! We chatted with Flame to see what had been going on since her days in front of the camera and talked a bit about her history if she's a fan of today's work. "The great thing about this book is that that is one of the central questions it is both asking and answering. One of the things we felt really strongly about is that there is no single answer, which I think is appropriate because there is no single response to, "How do you define feminism?" But I will say generally that I consider feminist porn to be both a genre of pornography and a movement. There are some overlapping themes within people's different definitions of feminist porn: One theme is exploring the idea of how to make the process of making porn more ethical and addressing the issue of labor, which has always been an issue within feminism. How we can make it fair and consensual and ethical, how we treat the people making it and really raising the standards for how we treat sex workers." "Now on a crusade to shake up the pornography industry for good, Lust is in the process of gathering a global community of female adult filmmakers who are more concerned with cinematic value than gratuitous sex scenes—and who are interested in one simple idea: films driven by a female character. "These women want to make films where the woman's pleasure is important; they want to show diversity in casting, and they want to work for an ethical production process." "A new wave of female filmmakers has set out to transform chauvinistic mainstream porn into stylish cinematic masterpieces that revolve around one simple idea: the pleasure of women." "It's heterosexual, middle-aged white men who have these fantasies with boobs and ass. You know the ones, they love their cars and their drinks." This, says Barcelona-based director Erika Lust, is who is behind the majority of today's mainstream porn. "They cast the same kind of very young women with very slim bodies and large breasts. They might have different hair colors, but more or less it's the same kind of women, over and over again." "Lust, who debuted her first adult indie short film, The Good Girl, in 2004 while studying political sciences, feminism and gender studies, considers mass-produced porn to be boring at best, misogynistic at worst. "Ugly", "tacky", and "horrible" are just some of the adjectives she ascribes to the genre, which has long been a vehicle for, as Lust puts it, the gaze of narrow-minded men." "But, certainly, besides the process of making it, feminist porn does have a mission behind it, to really address some of the repetitions, the stereotypes, the tropes of some of mainstream pornography and diversify the representation of desire, pleasure, body, race, class, identity, sexual agency. I mean, we are firing on all cylinders here! We are trying to address a lot of different issues all at once. A common misconception about feminist porn is that we are really concerned about women and women's representations and women's pleasure. I like to say that as a feminist pornographer, I priorities female desire, pleasure, orgasm, because all too often they aren't prioritized in other porn -- but I also think that we've got to dismantle the images and stereotypes around male sexuality. I think that that's also the work of feminism, to really expose these gender binaries and these stereotypes. This way the creators and performers are supported, everyone can be paid well and money can be re-invested into more quality productions. Ethical porn — where having boundaries and personal limits is respected, where everyone is happy, healthy, and excited to be a part of the scene, where we can explore our sexuality in a healthy controlled environment — this can be the norm. We can make the industry sex positive and a safe place for performers, but it has to start somewhere. I do hope we can pave the way for future performers to have an easier and more positive experience than I know most have, and it begins with demanding better treatment and respect. Put simply, ethical porn is pornography that is fair, equitable and consensual. It is porn that centers the welfare of performers in its production practices, that is transparent in its operations and that doesn't engage in harmful or negative post-production marketing. Ethical porn can depict a wide range of sex acts and performers; it is not restricted to any one group of producers or performers. Ethical porn exists within the wider movement of feminist porn and it is also made by mainstream US and European adult companies. It can also include any kind of production value – from amateur video to high-end studio productions. Professor David Church joins us to talk about his newest book Disposable Passions: Vintage Pornography and the Material Legacies of Adult Cinema (2016). His approach to pornography produced in the age when moving image technology was just emerging to the beginning of the “porno chic” era, is unique in the sense that he writes about how these older texts are consumed, admired, and fetishized within our contemporary mediascape. He does this by analyzing the affective resonance that these texts take on as they circulate via digital platforms today. This is a compelling way to think about porn’s history, and I think it could become a model for the way future historians go about formulating media histories as they are experienced today. In this interview, David talks to us about the role nostalgia plays in our erotic imagination, how our understanding of pornography changes when it transforms from being an object of erotic stimulation to a historical text, and explains cinephilia’s connection to necrophilia. Carter Stevens, noted ographer rates highly as one of the true founding fathers of 1970's American East Coast adult cinema. He was born Malcom Stephen Worob in Newark, New Jersey. He studied Photographic Science at Rochester Institute of Technology. Stevens made his film debut with the tongue-in-cheek romp "The Collegiates" in 1972. Stevens has also acted in numerous X-rated pictures using the alias Steven Mitchell. Stevens reinvented himself in the early 1980's as the editor/publisher of "The S&M News", which was the third largest fetish paper in America. Stevens was given a lifetime achievement award in directing o films from the Free Speech Coalition in 2004 and was inducted into the AVN Hall of Fame on January 10, 2009.
