It was never Independence Day to me. Always 4th of July. Watching fireworks on the street in front of Burlingame house as a kid. That great trip every year to the Red Devil fireworks stand. Fuzzy memories of seeing fireworks in Guerneville. 9 years old in Kearns Utah. Only allowed sparklers and caps. We used a hammer to blow up caps, often a whole role at a time. Learning about illegal fireworks at around 11 years old. Here stories about people blowing up toilets with M-80s. The Bicentennial quarters. About 12-13 years old we knew a guy who knew a guy and we would get some firecrackers and bottle rockets. Around 16 years old make the trip to China Town and buy fireworks. Do a deal in a back alley. Big fireworks show at La Jolla Cove freshman year at UCSD. Big fireworks show a much bigger thing here in San Diego than I remember in Burlingame. Then having leftovers back in Poway. I took them to the hazardous materials dump site. I always wondered if the workers there actually kept them. Then as I became more politically aware and learned more about the true meaning of America's founding, I really started to focus on the Declaration of Independence as a radical, innovative, groundbreaking idea. That we all have rights that precede the govt. And the govt's role is to secure those rights. Marchelle Wines is Greg La Follette's label and he was on CWC earlier this year on February 9, on this epiode. Also in the studio today are Melissa Galliani, GM of Wine Country Radio and Chris DiMatteo, producer of this podcast, who has brought and uncorked a 1985 Barolo he has been holding for thirty years. Evan Damiano started working with wine in 2010 when he worked a harvest in Oregon, then in Australia, at Balletto and then he took a “sojourn” to Milwaukee to try brewing, but that didn't work out. While living in Milwaukee, he sold high end Cabernets to restaurants, including some prestigious Napa Valley names. The pandemic wrecked his business when everything closed. He wanted to get back into wine and got an offer from Pride Mountain Vineyards. But in 2020, the fires affected them so much that there was no wine to be made. Evan emailed his friend Greg La Follette. Evan had met Greg when he worked selling wine, Greg's wines were in his portfolio. He got a job in another winery and in the evening he was helping out at Greg's winery. Evan got to do more and more under Greg's supervision and eventually became assistant winemaker then fully titled winemaker. J&H Estates, Marchelle Wines and Evan's winemaking lineage Evan is making some wines now where he is making the picking decisions as well as doing the winemaking. They did a whole-cluster press into new barrels. J & H Estates is owned by two African-American women partners. Evan has brought a bottle of Chardonnay that he made for their label. Greg La Follette's label is Marchelle Wines, where Evan is the winemaker now. Greg was the last apprentice of André Tchelitscheff and Evan is the last apprentice of Greg La Follette. It's different than the Italian Barberas. It is good, but in a different way. Piedmont is cooler so the local Barbera isn't as strong as this California one. It's warmer here so the Barbera is stronger than the usual common everyday Italian Barbera.

FAST FIVE Ingredients and Instructions Greens Cookbook — (Greens Restaurant) Leek and Mustard Pie Tart 1. 4 cups of leeks 2. 2 eggs 3. 1 cup cream 4. ~3oz cheese (your choice- cheddar, gruyere, goat) 5. 2-3 tbsp dijon mustard (6) Pie crust :) Slice the leeks real thin, then saute (maybe in white wine) while they cool, beat two eggs with the cup of cream, then add about 3oz grated cheese, then add mustard. Steve Dveris Tom Simoneau has brought Steve Dveris, head of the Healdsburg Wine and Food Experience, to California Wine Country with Harry Duke and Dan Berger. Steve Jaxon is away again this week. The Healdsburg Wine and Food Experience takes place from May 18-21, 2023. Also in the studio today are Sarah Quider, VP of winemaking for Foley Family Wines and chef Crista Luedtke. The first wine is the 2022 Ferrari-Carrano Fumé Blanc labeled North Coast and which is mainly a Sonoma County product, with a little bit from Lake County and Mendocino County. They prune the vines so the grapes have a lot of sunlight, which gives more tropical characteristics. One third of the wine is aged in neutral barrels. Dan Berger describes a trace of fresh fennel in the aromatics. It is succulent without being sweet. Dan mentions the trees in the Ferrari-Carrano grounds. To go with this wine Crista Luedtke has made a beet salad. She will also make a mushroom and walnut paté, which is vegan. Crista has two restaurants in Guerneville, Boon and the new one, Brot. The grapes grow in light-colored volcanic soil which gives some minerality. Dan describes it as rich, oily and seductive. It would go well with seafood in a cream sauce. Crista has paired it with her Moroccan carrots. She has a secret Moroccan sauce. They have a dressage arena on the property. As an accompaniment, they are also sampling the Bavarian style pub cheese from Brot, Crista's new restaurant, with some little pretzel bites. The Banshee Pinot Noir goes perfectly with it. Banshee Banshee has a little tasting room in Healdsburg, across the street from Valette. It has vinyl records and couches and a “lounge vibe.” They started the label to make a good Pinot Noir at an affordable price. It is a fruit forward Pinot Noir, to express the varietal. Banshee winemaker Alicia Sylvester was on California Wine Country last year, on this June 1, 2022 episode. There are over 140 wineries participating at the Healdsburg Wine and Food Experience. You have to be in wine country to get such a lineup that includes everything from small boutique wineries to great famous labels, from here and abroad. There is a car show, a tractor show, a new beer garden, spirits, cupcakes and more. Finally they taste a 2018 Silverado Vineyards Cabernet from Napa. It comes from two vineyards, in Stags Leap and Coombsville. Dan describes its balance between the Stags Leap character with the acidity from the cooler Coombsville. It reminds him of the 1986 and he thinks this one will age very well.

The recent series of atmospheric rivers knocked down old growth trees and inflicted moderate structural damage in Mendocino State parks. Preliminary estimates for clean up and repair after the storms range from half a million to a million dollars. More precise numbers will be available after a thorough investigation of the costs to replace a couple of bridges over Little River, in the Van Damme State Park. Terry Bertels is the District Superintendent for the Sonoma Mendocino Coast District of California State Parks. The district has 23 parks, 17 of which are in Mendocino County. The parking lot at Van Damme beach was especially hard hit with water and debris, which called for a significant cleanup effort. “Then as you go further inland from the beach parking lot, we had as many as 70 trees that came down across trails in Van Damme,” he said. “We had two bridges across Little River that are basically destroyed and will have to be re-engineered and rebuilt. That's obviously going to take a little bit of time. So that was probably the worst damage across a unit that we had. Certainly, we had a lot of tree damage across the district. We lost, I believe it was four old growth trees across three different park units. We lost one significant old growth in Montgomery Woods, we lost one significant old growth and then a small probably old growth in Hendy Woods, and then we lost one old growth in Armstrong Redwoods near Guerneville. Of course, there's no coming back from the loss of an old growth. So those are especially painful. Beyond that, we had trees that came down in campgrounds,” which are starting to open up again. Mendocino Woodlands State Park also lost a water tank from a tree falling on it, and a vehicle was damaged. “Just lots and lots of trees across the district that have come down,” Bertels concluded. Some of the fallen trees had to be cleared away from roads and trails, but at least one in Hendy Woods and another in Montgomery Woods will remain to continue serving a role in the ecosystem. One in Hendy Woods fell next to a trail, so the hole will be filled, but Bertels said of the tree that, “As it sits right now, it's a pretty healthy tree that's lying on the ground, and in all likelihood it's going to continue to serve the park as a nurse tree for insects and decay fungi and you name it…Certainly the one in Montgomery Woods, it basically exploded when it hit the ground, so it's going to serve the park as well. I think the intention is, they had a long life doing what they did, and now they'll have a long life serving the rest of the ecosystem in the parks.” Tourist destinations were affected, too, like the barn at Spring Ranch, which is a popular wedding venue, with a seating capacity of 200 people. Bertels reported that the barn further back from Highway 1 lost a portion of the roof from the south side. “The barn's not in great shape,” he conceded; “but we did have hopes and designs to try to get that roof replaced and do some structural repairs inside to keep it upright. The plan right now is to have an architect of historical structures come in and review the structure and give us an idea of whether it's feasible to get it on better footing.” That has yet to be determined. Another visitor favorite was breached by the waves. While wet winters used to be common, Bertels doesn't think the last series of storm systems is a return to the old normal. “I think there was some deferred damage,” he reflected. “We haven't paid for it for a number of years because we haven't had these extreme storms, so there was more out there that was waiting to fail, just waiting for that extreme event…the series of atmospheric rivers that came through, coupled with the winds, coupled with the high swells that we got, there's just a lot going on with these storms. Case in point would be Point Cabrillo State Historic Park, in the lighthouse. Over its history, there have been three times that waves have come up over the cliff's edge and swamped the lighthouse, and this was one of them. Those types of things don't happen that often. They do happen, but they don't happen every year…it definitely was out of the ordinary.” Bertels is optimistic that being part of the disaster declaration will make his district eligible for more funding for recovery operations and repairs, especially for the bridges. “I hope that's the case, because those aren't going to be cheap,” he predicted; “and it's going to be hard for us to do it if we don't have that assistance.” State parks won't be closed, but Bertels asks visitors to be patient and try not to get hurt. “Keep an open eye and be careful,” he advised. “Stay out (of closed areas) if you can, but if you just can't help yourself, know that the hazards are there, and keep an eye out for them.”

Pond Farm Brewing Company co-owners and co-founders Trevor and Stephanie Martens join Harry Duke and Herlinda Heras on Brew Ha Ha today. They own and operate Pond Farm Brewing in nearby San Rafael, California. The name Pond Farm Brewing has a fun history. Pond Farm was an artists' residency and workshop that started in the 1940s, in Guerneville. It became known for pottery in the 1950s as the studio of Marguerite Wildenhain, a famous potter originally from Germany. Trevor's father was there so he remembers how the community was focused on craft and disciplined work habits. They also have other professional careers. When they chose the name, they had not chosen the location yet. Trevor tells about the transition from aerospace engineering to brewing. He took an internship at Fogbelt, to see how the hobby could feel as a full time job. Among all their beers, they first taste the San Rafael Lager, a Mexican style lager beer with a hint of corn sweetness. Trevor mentions that they use malt from Admiral Malting in Alameda. The Location Part of their dream was to have a good physical location that felt happy and welcoming. The building they are in has all the beer hall vibes they wanted, with lots of natural light and high ceilings. They actually bought the building and have put solar on the roof! It is a great spot for social gatherings of all kinds. They have been serving beer for about three years but the kitchen has been open for about a month and half. They have pretzels, wings, salads, grilled cheese, brats, veggie sandwiches and kid's fare too. Pond Farm's approach to the beer is to have a full hand of popular styles, with the core beers people like, plus some others in rotation. “There are so many styles to drink and to brew and it's hard to only do the same thing over and over.” – Trevor Martens Pond Farm Brewing is located at 1848 4th St. in San Rafael. They are open Tuesday through Sunday, 3pm-9pm, Friday and Saturday 12noon-10pm, Sunday 12noon-8pm. They have live music there on Saturdays, including popular local bands such as Fairfax Social Club coming up on May 28. That band shares a lot of regulars with the brew house. Other Pond Farm Brews Previously they tasted the 6.8% Hazy IPA, aka a New England IPA. It is one of the four beers that they opened with. It is more balanced than a lot of hazy beers. As they go through tasting the other beers, the first is Lucy, a bourbon barrel aged imperial brown ale. Same As It Never Was is a west coast style that always comes in at 6.7% ABV but uses different hops every time. The label is inspired by the Talking Heads album cover. Another is called Sour Adversity and features a picture of an Elizabethan personage, presumed (erroneously*) to have written many works of poetry and literature. Adrift is a pale ale with a 5.4% ABV, inspired by Sierra Nevada's style with a little bit more hop flavors. The group's leader started her showbiz career when she was pushing forty and how, at nearly eighty, she's still at it. Plus...Turning 21 is a big deal! Daly City is one of the closest suburbs in the outer borders of San Francisco, located directly to the South. It's home to one of the densest populations of Filipinos, anywhere outside of the Philippines, comprising 33% of the total population in a 2010 census. From the late '80s to the early 2000s, Daly City helped to raise some of the world's most famous DJs, and dance groups. It was a big part of the history here on the west coast for the Filipino and Hip-Hop communities. Most of the Filipino youth here in Daly City and the Bay Area were made up of second-generation Americans. As the sons and daughters of first-generation immigrants, we were trying to find our footing, our voice, often overshadowed within the makeup of the rich, diverse culture found in San Francisco. The closest kinship we gravitated towards, at least in the people I know, identified with the Black and Latin-American music and culture of the time, weaving in our own rhythms and color palette, while forming our own community to bond us close together. While much of this scene has somewhat been well documented, there's a cast of characters behind the scenes - around the turntables, on the dance floor, roaming the streets, soaking in the gravity of what seemed to just be a bunch of kids during that time just trying to find an identity. This conversation scratches the surface of that scene, but puts us in the heart of it. Kathlyn is my wife's childhood friend. Kathlyn was born in the Bay Area and makes her living as a nurse. Her husband Tudor, is also a native of San Francisco. He manages a division of the Bay Area transit system and is a former amateur boxer. Together they are parents to two amazing girls, which you'll hear in the background in the first part of this conversation. We all grew up around each other throughout our teens, on parallel paths, orbiting in and around the same circles. So in a way, I can say that I've known these people for most of my life. In my youth, I'd see them around the same parties, which around Daly City was held in house garages, community church halls, and the several parks peppered throughout the city. An interesting thing to mention, which gives a bit of context to some of the stories in this podcast. The way I came to know Tudor was through one of my good friend's older brother. I guess the best way to describe it would be like in the movie Dazed and Confused. In the movie, there were two groups of boys - Ben Affleck and the older ruffian kids. The older kids chased around the younger, innocent kids - eighth-graders making their way into high school. That was the age gap between us. We were the younger kids looking out for the older kids. By no means were Tudor and his friends during that time known as bullies, but they were people you didn't mess around with, or give any funny looks. They were to be respected, and in that regard, you get respect back, and there wouldn't be any problems. So it was interesting at first when I found out that he and Kathlyn got together about 20 years ago. And throughout these years I've seen him, morph into a kind, caring, generous, respected human being, completely opposite of all the misconceptions I had of him and his friends as a youth. We bounce through plenty of fun topics in this episode, dissecting the social compulsions of our youth, the art of the Taco Bell Mexican Pizza, and paint a vivid picture of what Daly City used to look like as a city in the 80s and 90s. Tudor also shares some fascinating stories about his life in the Bboy scene and what it takes to win in a breakdancing battle. We also get into the mobile DJ scene, and som of his experiences growing up around a gang. So while many know the stories about the music and culture that came out of the era of the late 80s and 90s in Daly City, we are also a part of the stories within that story. And what's offered here are just small vignettes of what a lot of Filipino youth of that era are beginning to reflect on and unpack. John Harley is our guest this week on California Wine Country with Steve Jaxon and Dan Berger. His label is called Inizi Wines and he specializes in growing and producing Italian varietals in California which are rarely found in the United States. Inizi Wines was founded by two couples, A.J. and Jen Filipelli and John and Kirsti Harley, in 2012. John and A.J. became friends when they were studying Enology and Viticulture, respectively, at Fresno State, and their wives are also partners in the company. The word "Inizi" means "beginnings" in Italian. Their first vintage was 2012, a Charbono. It's an Italian variety that was known for a while in the Napa Valley. It is known for its acidity, dark color and beautiful aromatics. It was known as a good blending grape in the age before the Judgement of Paris, when blends were more popular, and before Cabernet Sauvignon took over. Next they taste a 2018 Tocai Friulano, a crisp white wine very popular in Italy. It is usually grown on steep, rocky hillsides, in Friuli, the region of north-eastern Italy. "You can take the grape out of Italy but you can't take the Italy out of the grape." After they started with Charbono, they continued to plant and produce unfamiliar wines. The four of them have jobs in other parts of the wine industry and they were surprised at how much success they have had. They have a tasting room in Guerneville. They also make three blends, a white, red and rosé, from their Italian varieties. They make a Sagrantino, which is ultra-rare. They also make Montepulciano. Their red blend is their most popular bottling, it has Montepulciano, Dolcetto, Sangiovese, Barbera and a little Cabernet Sauvignon. Dan Berger notices that the 2015 Charbono is dark but has low tannins. John compares it to a cool climate Syrah. John explains that they don't own their vineyards but they work closely with the vineyard owners. They have ancient Charbono vines. There are only about 70 acres of Charbono in the US. They grow Charbono in Argentina, where it is also called Bonarda. (The name Bonarda is also known in Italy.) In Argentina, they use it for blending with their Malbecs. Dan Berger explains that it is not easy to find these plantings of old Italian varieties in California, you have to go out and hunt for them. John tells about his Italian grandfather who started selling grapes in New York on a small scale and eventually grew to a nationwide business and he became known as The Juice King of the US. They also taste a Sagrantino that Dan says is so extraordinary that he would cellar it for 30 or 35 years. Sagrantino comes from the south of Italy and is one of the most tannic wines in the world. It has to be a year in the barrel and two years in the bottle, by Italian DOC standards. His friend Dick Handel has an acre and a half of this on a hill in Dry Creek. "You can take the grape out of Italy but you can't take the Italy out of the grape." Dan compares it to a walk in the forest in the summertime. Sagrantino is the Barolo of the south, says Dan, quoting friend of the show Don Chigazola. John says it could be compared to a Cabernet Sauvignon. Dan suggests having it with roast lamb with garlic. There are only about 10 acres of this grape grown in the US. Dan says it is a hard fruit to work with, you have to use small quantities of fruit and make it gently. John says they had about a ton and a half. They had it in a large open topped container, they de-topped the fruit, it has about 10% whole cluster, to give it a softer structure and aromatics, and that helped kick off its native ferment with its indigenous yeast. They gently extracted the wine, a couple of punch-downs per day. The yeast produces CO2 and ethanol. The skins float to the top. That's where the c0lor, flavors and tannins are, so you want to mix that back down into the juice, 2 or 3 times per 24 hours. This they do manually. The vines struggle on the hillside and that produces really concentrated ...
Some Russian River residents say there are two seasons in the county, flood season and fire season with little rest in between. In the last installment of her four-part series, KCBS Radio reporter Holly Quan went back to Guerneville to see, six months after the worst flooding in a quarter century, whether the area is ready for evacuations of a different kind.
Six months after the worst flooding on the Russian River in 25 years, the long term effects are being felt in a diaspora of long time locals. Housing was tough enough before the water rose 13 feet above flood stage. As KCBS Radio reporter Holly Quan discovers in part three of her special four-part series from Guerneville, this disaster could change the face and feel of the town.

For an area with as large a gay population and as much theatre as Sonoma County, it’s surprising how little gay-themed theatre is produced in the region. Oh sure, the larger companies will produce the more mainstream musicals like Cabaret or La Cage aux Folles every few years, and Halloween usually brings The Rocky Horror Show, but little else seems to cross local stages. The nomadic Pegasus Theater Company, in existence in one form or another for about 20 years, is the exception. Its Russian River roots have been planted firmly in the gay community since its inception, and it regularly programs shows with gay content into its seasons. Previous productions include newer plays like Avow to old chestnuts like Norman, is that You? This season Pegasus brings Paul Rudnick’s The New Century to the Mt. Jackson Masonic Lodge in Guerneville. Rudnick (I Hate Hamlet, In & Out) has taken a collection of comedic one-acts and put them together for this show. It’s basically three monologues and a “wrap up” scene. “Pride and Joy” opens the show with a meeting of the Massapequa, Long Island chapter of the PLGBTQCCC & O – the “Parents of Lesbians, Gays, Bisexuals, Transgendered, Questioning, Curious, Creatively Concerned and Others”. Ms. Helene Nadler (Thea Rhiannon) introduces herself to the membership as the "most loving mother of all time". She has to be. She has three children: a lesbian daughter, a transgendered son who dates lesbians, and a gay son into BDSM and scatology. Beat that, parents. We the meet “Mr. Charles, Currently of Palm Beach”. Charles (Nick Charles) has been exiled from New York by the gay community for being “too gay”, which happens to be the title of the cable access show he now hosts along with his “ward” Shane (director John Rowan) where he answers viewer mail and revels in being who he is. With “Crafty” we meet Barbara Ellen Diggs (Noel Yates), a crafts-crazy Midwesterner who makes toilet paper koozies and tuxedo toaster covers. The passing of her son by AIDS has led her to question her faith. “I don’t know if I believe in God anymore,” she says, “but I do believe in cute.” All these characters come together in a really contrived closing scene set at a New York Hospital maternity ward that seems tacked on to create a full-length show. The show suffers from the challenges inherent in running a small theatre company - no budget, minimal sets and lighting, a limited talent pool leading to casting issues, etc., but it has heart, which counts for a lot, and you have to love a show that credits costumes to an entity called “Nutsack Creations”. ‘The New Century’ runs through November 25 at the Mt. Jackson Masonic Lodge in Guerneville. Friday and Saturday evening performances are at 7:30pm, the Sunday matinee is at 2pm. For more information, go to pegasustheater.com

Here’s some of what they have in store for local audiences: Petaluma’s Cinnabar Theater (cinnabartheater.org) transforms itself into Berlin’s Kit Kat Club and bids you willkommen, bienvenue, and welcome to the classic Kander and Ebb musical Cabaret. Broadway veteran Michael McGurk and Petaluma native Alia Beeton take on the roles that won Joel Grey and Liza Minnelli their Oscars. The Spreckels Theatre Company of Rohnert Park (spreckelsonline.com) opens its season with the multi-Tony-Award-winning The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-time. Fans of the Mark Haddon novel about a young boy on the autism spectrum investigating the death of a neighborhood dog will find that it’s been somewhat reworked for the stage, but Tony voters liked it enough to name it 2015’s Best Play. Sebastopol’s Main Stage West (mainstagewest.com) opens its season with the world premiere of an original comedy by local playwright Bob Duxbury. Savage Wealth examines the impact of the sale of a Lake Tahoe home and the vacant lot next to it on a pair of brothers and their childhood friend. John Shillington directs a cast of three in a story that also manages to work new age philosophy, politics, and romantic betrayal into it. Dancing and singing New York “wiseguys” take over Santa Rosa’s 6th Street Playhouse (6thstreetplayhouse.com) as they present Guys and Dolls. Summer Repertory Theatre Artistic Director James Newman moves to Railroad Square to helm what has been called “the greatest of all American musicals”. Santa Rosa’s Left Edge Theatre (leftedgetheatre.com) continues to provide North Bay audiences with recently written plays never before seen in the area with the U.S. premiere of a hit British comedy. David Simpson’s The Naked Truth involves charity fundraising, female empowerment, and pole dancing. Argo Thompson directs and somehow has worked former Second Row Center host David Templeton into the mix. The Pegasus Theatre Company of Guerneville (pegasustheater.com) will present its 12th annual Tapas: New Short Play Festival. This year’s festival will include seven short plays by Northern California playwrights and will be the first production overseen by new Artistic Director Rich Rubin. Healdsburg’s Raven Players (raventheater.org) open with two contemporary dramas that deal with a host of complex issues including war, PTSD, gun violence, politics and religion. Time Stands Still and Church & State will run in “rep”. In Marin, the Novato Theater Company (novatotheatercompany.org) hopes to have one singular sensation with their production of A Chorus Line, while Mill Valley’s Marin Theatre Company (marintheatre.org) will present the West Coast premiere of the 2017 Best Play Tony-winning political thriller Oslo. Ross Valley Players buck the trend and bring Shakespeare indoors for a change with their production of Twelfth Night. Napa’s Lucky Penny Productions (luckypennynapa.com) invites you Into the Woods, where director James Sasser has apparently added another layer of “fun” to the musical fairy tale mash-up. “Oh, what fools these mortal’s be!” “The course of true love never did run smooth.” “Love looks not with the eyes but with the mind.” There are a lot of great lines in Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream, but one of my favorites comes close to the end. It’s a theater review, of sorts. Having just witnessed a wacky performance by a band of over-excited tradesmen turned actors, the stern Duke Theseus quiets his nitpicky entourage with the words, “Nothing can be amiss when simpleness and duty tender it.” In other words, when some is simply done, with great love, it’s just not fair to judge it too harshly. That’s a lovely thought, and one that certainly applies to Pegasus Theater’s rambunctious and unruly staging of the Bard’s most popular comedy. On the Sunday I saw it, some of the cast’s performances were a bit, um, ragged, with lines blown or stumbled over. Parts of the action are blocked in ways that make it hard to see from certain places in the audience. Also, the original text has been cut-apart, reduced and re-written, adding new lines like “Everything will be okay!” alongside Shakespeare’s indelible poetry. Personally, I think if you don’t want to try and make Shakespeare’s words work, then you should have done a different play. Cut a few of Shakespeare’s lines if you have to, but don’t rewrite let, unless your new lines are, you know, brilliant. Okay, that’s my pet peeve. Anyway, in the Pegasus production, it hardly matters, because the whole thing is so amiably and passionately presented, done with such a disarmingly life-and-love affirming spirit, whatever quibbles I had while watching it quickly sank into the sun-dappled river in front of which the show is presented, outdoors, under a bridge, the simple set draped in late afternoon light and shadow. As directed by Beulah Vega, this Midsummer Night’s Dream is clearly a lusty love offering to the river community of Guerneville and the surrounding areas. For one thing, the show is free—well, donations are accepted, and cushy seats are one of the perks available to those donating on the company’s Indiegogo site. Aside from being a literal gift to its audiences, the whole production shouts aloud the joys and pleasures of love. In this version, the four Athenian lovers, originally written as two men and two women, are all women—Crystal Carpenter, Jessica Anderson, Elaine Koslowski, and Alexis Christenson—and the idea of them pairing up and getting married doesn’t cause anyone in Athens to bat an eye. The woodland fairies, ruled by King Oberon (Peter Rogers) and Queen Titania (Elizabeth Henry) with the help of the playful Puck (Jake Hamlin), have a lot of fun with the word “fairy,” and are about as sex-positive a group as one could imagine. Adding to the positives, is Nick Christensen, who as the blundering would be actor Bottom, frequently steals the show, with or without the fluffy donkey head Puck magically gives him. There is enough kissing, groping, fondling, and stroking in the show to raise anyone’s pulse rate, the audience is encouraged to shout out their own improvisations, and the clever use of Pink Floyd’s The Wall—the actual vinyl album—gets one of the show’s biggest laughs. If you are in love with love, there’s plenty to like in this sexy, silly, entertainingly bubbly Midsummer. ‘A Midsummer Night’s Dream’ runs Friday-Sunday through August 31 at Riverkeeper Park, near Sonoma Nesting Company. There’s an old Latin saying. "Aestivo Tempori est Shakespeare!" Roughly translated: There’s no better time to watch Shakespeare than in the summertime! I don’t know when summer became so connected to the Bad Bard of Avon, but there’s no denying that the moment the weather gets nice, along comes a troupe of iambic-pentameter talking actors to put on a little something by good old William S. This coming weekend, Railroad Square’s Shakespeare in the Cannery will open "Twelfth Night," and next month will bring productions of "A Midsummer Night’s Dream" to Guerneville, and "The Taming of the Shrew" to Mill Valley. Since they are amongst Shakespeare’s better-known shows, there’s a pretty good chance what you see and hear with these productions will be more-or-less what Shakespeare wrote, because there’s an unwritten rule about Shakespeare: If you’re going to mess around with the Bard, you will get less blowback if you pick a play that nobody knows. Which brings us to William Shakespeare’s "Cymbeline," landing with a gleeful-giddy splash last weekend in San Rafael’s Forest Meadows Amphitheatre at Dominican University. "Cymbeline," one of Shakespeare’s final works as a playwright, is rarely ever performed, despite the fact that it’s one of the playwright’s most complexly plotted, entertaining, surprise-packed, and satisfying plays - all of which made it very popular, you know, in the olden days. But modern critics tend to turn their noses up at it, as they do anything Shakespeare wrote for the sheer happy hell of it - which is more-or-less what "Cymbeline" feels like. As that other old Latin saying goes: Prolixior est unum rabidus fabula. Meaning: “This is one crazy play!” There’s a woman disguised as a boy. An aging ruler losing his kingdom and his sanity. A soldier convincing a married man his wife has been unfaithful. And a magic potion that makes the living appear to be dead. And that’s just for starters. "Cymbeline" carries so many plot ideas reminiscent of Shakespeare’s other plays, it sometimes seems like a cross between a deliberate self-parody and a career retrospective. The play is named for the crazy English king Cymbeline, but the true heroine of the story is his daughter Imogen, played with brilliant simplicity and sweetness by Stella Heath. Having P.O.’d her papa by refusing to marry the obnoxiously self-loving prince Cloten -a hilarious Thomas Gorrebeeck - instead marrying the lowly Roman orphan Leonatus Posthumus - also Gorrebeeck, a quick-change artist of the highest order - Imogen becomes the target of her duplicitous stepmother, the queen, and also the subject of a certain test-of-fidelity on the part of Posthumus. Falsely accused of fooling around, she ends up on the run, dressed in drag, with wacky old Cloten in pursuit, and that’s where a pair of kidnapped princes raised as mountain men enter the story. Like I said, Crazy! And in this light-hearted production, director Robert Currier keeps things frisking along, tackling the problem of the play’s complexity by inserting a few original songs in place of Shakespeare’s text, and adding a few lines of his own here and there to clear things up and explain what’s going on. I’d have preferred the more classic approach of simply directing the play in a way that makes it understandable to the audience, but hey! It’s sort of fun and it kind of works. And since very few audience members will have seen "Cymbeline" before, it’s likely no one will know the difference.
